The pros: Great prices, kid friendly menu and pricing
The Cons: Just so-so food. The meat, the sauce, the sides. Nothing stands out and makes you want to come back
I saw their grille rig at a local golf course, and grabbed a menu. I was excited to have a new BBQ place in the area, and looked forward to this. We got two meals to go, and discovered the Beef Brisket was available as a "meal" (instead of a sandwich).
Good:
- The smoked chicken was great. Very flavorful, moist and tasty.
- The baked beans were excellent as well.
Bad:
- Sauce - The vinegar based sauce is not a style of BBQ that I enjoy.
- Beef Brisket - The beef brisket tasted like it had been sliced well before the day it was served (probably best to leave unsliced until they sell it) - part was pretty gross, part was quite good. (While eating it, I was hoping my wife would not finish her chicken) and the vinegar detracted from it.
- Cucumber Salad - When I got it home, it was warm, and heavy on the vinegar.
Like others here, I would prefer (and would return for) if they offered the more typical BBQ sauce, or would not use the vinegar sauce they use.
The waitress sold it as a california boy does BBQ the southern way. And that's what the chef needs - a lot of growing up.
Having tasted bbq from texas to the carolinas, I cannot be anything but disappointed. The sauce used for chicken, beef brisket and the ribs is the same with varying degrees of fluidity. It's too sweet, not spicy or smoky enough. More like a sugar infused teriyaki sauce. Plain ewwww!
If the owner doesn't pay attention to food quality, this place will shut as did it's predecessor.
Ordered ribs and chicken. This place is better than Joey's down the way. The service was fantastic and friendly. Ribs and chicken were delicious. Their chili is pretty good. Will be back as I work close by.
I think the owners are reading the reviews. The sweet potato fries were about as thick as a sharpie marker and were hot n' tasty, and we even got complimentary cream puffs for dessert too! The fact that they are responding to their critics is admirable.
Barbeque, like art, rarely satisfy all tastes. Therefore, do yourself a favor and try Britt's before you pay too much attention to the strongly opinionated "gourmands."
I tried the baby back ribs, a hot link, beans and coleslaw as sides. The meat was extremely tender and juicy, yet the outside had a nice crust. I would have appreciated a little bit more smoke, although that's just my taste. To my surprise, hot link chunks were included in the beans and were flavorful overall.
This may be the one BBQ place with a decent selection of items for vegetarians: Vegetable skewers (served on top of potato rounds), sweet potato fries, cucumber salad (if you like pickles you'll love this), and coleslaw.
The service is attentive and pleasant...definitely coming back to get my meat fix soon.
Being Southern, I guess I'm a little bit spoiled. BBQ originated in the poor rural areas of the South. So, having to pay $7 for a mediocre sandwich ONLY is a bit much. $7 should include at LEAST a side. Instead, you have to pay $2 extra for a side.
Also, the sides are pretty week. Only a tiny cup of slaw or potato salad, or a decent size fry basket. The last time I had their sweet potatoe fries, they were way too soft and dry. No greens at least? The chili mac tasted like bad hamburger helper. Need more options.
I could see MAYBE paying $7 for the sandwich if the barbeque sauce didn't take like it came straight from a ketchup bottle.
This place needs something to spice it up a bit. Come up with a sauce recipe that you can really stand behind and sell. That is the only excuse you would have to charge $7 for a single sandwich. That's the whole point of BBQ..the sauce!
I ordered 2 pull pork sandwiches, an order of potato salad and fries, and my meal came to $21. $21? I could go across to the more gourmet Farm Stand at those prices.
With all of that being said however, I'm a BBQ fanatic and I'm happy to at least have one nearby. Joey's in Manhattan Beach by the Pacific Theatre would be my first choice though. Now THERE is a menu!
Went here for lunch with some co-workers.
For the sandwich combo you pay roughly $10. You gt a 6" sandwich, a choice of a side, and a drink.
All three of us ordered the beef brisket sandwich combo.
For their side orders both my friends ordered the beans. They said they were good. I ordered the chili mac and boy that ended up being a bad choice. The chili mac had absolutely no flavor.
The sandwich, on the other hand, was very good. Plenty of meat inside with a decent flavor. The waitress was very friendly and she kept our drinks full.
Other than the chili mac that I chose for my side we left satisfied. Next time I will order a different side but will most likely stick with the beef brisket sandwich.
At the end of your meal they give each person a custard filled, powder sugar coated donut. I am assuming they make them there. This was a nice touch and we all appreciated it.
This place is expensive as I paid around $12 after tax and tip. Not what I want to pay for lunch on a daily basis.
The sides were inexcusably horrible. No restaurant should ever serve something so obviously bad. The chili mac was so dry everyone in the place was complaining about it. The beans were hard and not cooked properly. The bbq sauce was mediocre, but not terrible. I did like the pulled pork as it wasn't as mushy as some other places. Ignore the 5 star reviews, clearly not someone who should be writing reviews anywhere. Two stars only for decent service.
I love BBQ. Very excited to see this place open. I had the baby back ribs with sides of BBQ beans and chili mac. The ribs were wonderful! The beans were good. I had one taste of the chili mac and left it. Absolutely no flavor - just limp, soggy macaroni.
I had actually planned to eat in, but ended up with take out. The staff seemed nice enough, but the place is small. The whole time I was waiting for my meal, they were talking among themselves about having to buy toothpicks and taking money out of the register and other things that seemed inappropriate to me for talking about in front of customers. The place is way too small for that.
If/when I go back, I will either get no sides or two sides of beans. One thing that always amazes me is how expensive BBQ food is. Can anyone tell me why? I know it has to be cooked for a long period. But the meats that are used are generally cheaper cuts - we are not talking filet migon here. Even with a coupon, I felt it was overpriced.
The Good -
The People - very sweet and friendly. Definitely make you feel welcome. Despite what you might think from this, I am pulling for them to work out the kitchen issues and deliver a great product.
The Cream Puff - who doesn't like a free cream puff?
The Prices - very reasonable
The Portions - HUGE
The Pulled Pork Sandwich - Good smokey flavor, not fatty or gristly at all - it was oddly watery though and left the bun soggy (but not with sauce as the soggy was clear and not soggy with fat because it was not greasy)
The Chicken - a little dry, but overall good flavor
The Bad -
The spare ribs - maybe just unlucky - these were very fatty, not very much meat
The sauce - really bland, just a little tomato and vinegar
No cornbread - what is BBQ w/o cornbread?
The sides -
The potato rounds - salty and soggy, they would greatly benefit from being sliced thinner
The potato salad & chili mac - very bland
Tried some of their pulled pork, so I can say that had an excellent flavor.
Because of food sensitivities, I was afraid to try the sauce though, so I can't judge that. It looked like north carolina style but I was told that it wasn't.
(note - people who are sensitive to MSG will also be sensitive to liquid smoke flavor)
As my 2nd purpose here is to help restaurants better themselves, I will give two pieces of advice from a real southerner.
Hamburger buns (pepperidge farm makes a really good one with sesame seeds) go with BBQ - better than french rolls!
Southerners like a mushy soft BBQ sandwich. The crunchier french rolls are for french dips and euro-style sandwiches.
and
Cole slaw is great with north carolina bbq sauce, but dill pickle chips or dill relish goes best with other bbq sauces.
Either way, I'll go back for more!
Two stars for food, and an extra star for great service.
In all fairness, I'm sure I ordered the wrong thing. What was I thinking, getting taquitos in a BBQ restaurant? http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Haha, they were pretty bad, too much deep-fried flour tortilla and not enough pulled pork filling. (I thought a taquito was made with corn tortilla, and a flauta was with a flour tortilla?.....but whatev...)
Anyway, this restaurant has been open only one month at this location.
It was named in honor of a girl named Brittany (her photo is posted to the listing by a previous reviewer), who was the 19 yo daughter of one of the co-owners. She was killed in a traffic accident last year. : (
Britt's was very busy at the time I was there yesterday, late Sunday afternoon. The Lakers game had just begun, on Britt's big TV. Every table was full in the small dining room, and the two servers scrambled to keep up with people eating in, picking up orders, and deliveries.
There was line to order take-out.
So, my expectations were high. I almost got the baby back ribs, but it's hard to find ribs better than I can make at home.....frankly. I'm a terrific cook, if I do say so. I do a mean baked beans & potato salad, too. And that's why I was disappointed in my two sides.
The potato salad appeared to be lacking onions, celery, eggs, and everything except potatoes & mayo. It was tasteless, could have used salt, at least.
The BBQ beans were plenty spicy, not bad. But I like mine on the sweet side, slow-baked with brown sugar, bacon, onion.
The pulled pork taquitos sounded interesting, something different. But they were so lame that I think they should not even be on the menu. It is a dish that is probably not representative of the restaurant's barbecued meats.
Britt's pork is smoked about 15 hours, and their beef brisket, they claim, is smoked for 18 hours.
Noticeably missing on the menu is cornbread. A hunk of flavorful, moist cornbread (with lots of real butter) sure does go good with barbecue, and I hope they will consider this as a menu addition at some point.
Britt's lemonade was good. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Not too sweet, and homemade. I know this cuz there was a seed in my lemonade, a very good sign, haha.
I feel a story coming on......
Haha, no worries, it's a brief one:
In Chicago, years ago, in my twentysomething partying days, we would close the bars at 4 or 5am and head for one of the far South Side rib joints. At that crazy hour of the morning, the lines would be about a block long. Chicago has killer hot dogs, pizza, blues......and barbecue. Baby.
Rib tips is what we were after, as the sun came up. And those tips will forever be a tough act to follow.
Britt's offers rib tips, and maybe sometime I will return and give 'em a try.
Yesterday's meal filled me up, for $9.50. And to top it all off, a complimentary pastry came with my check. Like I needed more carbs......lordy lordy...... http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Judging by the crowd at Britt's, this place has tremendous potential. I loved my server, she was so cool and chatty, apologizing to me for the wait. The local interest in BBQ is strong, so it will be interesting to see how this cute cafe evolves......
Britt's is open daily from 11am to 9pm, and they also do catering. Free street parking is plentiful, everywhere in El Segundo (thank you).
So I had the taquitos, the worst driest meat was on the inside. With a crunchy oily outside. This was by far the worst meal I have ever had. I felt so ill after wards I almost threw up in my mouth. I got the beans with my combo and the beans are so generic that they tasted like someone opened up a can and sprinkled some seasoning on them, then warmed them up. WOW thanks for the diarrhea.
This place really coins the phrase "run for the boarder, then run for the toilet". If there was a possibility to give this place a negative STAR I would give them 5 of them. AVOID this place at all costs, this place would be better served as a parking lot.
Went there for lunch, great service and good food. Had the pull pork sandwich and potato rounds. Also had their cole slaw for side, that was just okay... not a lot of flavor for the slaw but everything else was great.
Adding this spot to the lunch rotation for sure...
Oh and get there early, by noon, the place was packed.
I love this place, their ribs taste better than my other favorite place in Burbank plus it's much closer.
Very friendly staff.
Highly recommend their baby back rib. (half is good for most people)
St louis ribs, hot links, sweet potato fries and potato rounds are great too.
Will sure to go back for more.
Brand new place ... VERY good food ... They have a brisket sandwich, we asked if they could make it an entree instead, they said no problem, it was very tasty (not sliced meat, more like pulled brisket).
I had the baby back ribs, liked it very much. Lots of meat on the bones, tender, yummy. The BBQ sauce, started a little sweet, got smoky, ended spicy, really enjoyable.
Side dish of Potato Rounds ... looks like potator chips, but tastes like French fries, very good, indulgent.
So we had two entrees, which each come with two small sides, plus one order of Potato Rounds, plus one drink, all for $22!
I am so going back for more, as soon as I can.
I'm with Carolyn, come for the meat forget the sides. I had lunch at Britts today. I had a good BBQ Brisket sandwich and it was good. I ordered the potato rounds and they were soggy and greasy. I plan to go again so I'll report back on the pulled pork.
The service was good, atmosphere so so.
The hubby and I decided to try something new with both kids. So we drove down Main Street and after several "no's" we all saw the Britt's BBQ sign and all agreed. Mind you I am vegeterian...lol!
My hubby and daughter shared the Ribs and Chicken which came with two sides, we opted for the Chili Mac and the BBQ Beans. I ordered the BBQ Quesadilla with no meat and a side of Potato Rounds. After a while I began noticing a lot of orders for the Sweet Potato Fries and after reading the description on the menu, "honey and cinnamon" I ordered some. Everything was DELICIOUS! Although next time we'll do without the Chili Mac. My husband and daughter devoured the ribs and chicken. I loved my BBQ Quesadilla and my daughter couldn't keep her grubby little hands off of it. The potato fries are to die for!!!
However, they are missing something....dessert!!!
The service was good. Although I did notice our server becoming annoyed that she had to constantly tell another server on what to do instead of just standing there. The establishment is small so its hit or miss if you show up with a bunch of people. Of course my little one had to make a bathroom trip and their bathrooms were VERY clean!!!
I want some sweet potato fries!!
Decent food and amazingly friendly service. Had a brisket sandwich with baked beans and a side of potato slices. The brisket seemed a bit bland and the bun was soggy, but it still tasted good. Their bbq sauce has a bit of spiciness to it, and that was very tasty. The beans were good, not a soggy bean paste like most places. We had a long wait because there was a large party on the patio, so we were comped a pastry dessert which was very good. It was a small custard-filled donut thing with powdered sugar on top, as good as any donut.
Good prices too! I'll definitely be back to at least give the rib and chicken combo, their star dish, a try.
First of all, great service!
What a transition from a vegetarian restaurant to a BBQ joint. Anyway, it is a lot better than the vegan place.
I had brisket sandwich with fried sweet potato fries. I liked the sandwich. Sweet potato fries could be little crispier and thicker. I can do without honey sauce.
I wanted to try baby back ribs but too full to order. Asked for some sample, the lady gladly hooked us up with some baby back samples. It was meaty and the bbq sauce was tasty. I would definitely order their baby back next time.
Give this place a try. It is a lot better than Luke Walton's rib joint in the Manhattan beach mall. It tastes a lot better and price is a lot reasonable.
Went to Britt's this week with my GF. I think our opinion mirrors that of the many Yelpers below....excellent BBQ and very friendly service. The sides are forgettable.
They had run out of the Baby Back ribs (several people mentioned they run out of items quickly), so we tried and really enjoyed the St. Louis ribs. They were juicy and tasty. I'll definitely be back for more and would love to try the baby back ribs.
I had the sweet potato fries for a side. They have honey and cinnamon, which made for a very interesting flavor. But they were soggy. I'd love to try them again if they were fresh, crisp, and hot out of the fryer.
We chatted several times with our waitress. She was really sweet. We talked about the restaurant opening and how they have been doing so far. It certainly feels like Britt's is part of the neighborhood.
I'm hoping they succeed and perfect their menu. They have the BBQ down, which is the most important part. But if they could perfect their sides, add Southern-style sweet tea, and expand their options a bit, then they could have a real home run. Good luck!!
Great local spot. Had spare ribs perfectly cooked and moist, and really enjoyed the slightly sweet vinegar-based barbecue sauce - hadn't had that since being back on the Southeast coast.
The restaurant has a few comfortable tables, so eating in is fine. It's not fancy nor themed or anything. Could pass on the cucumber salad. It's not bad, just not my thing. I could only make it through four ribs of the huge half-rack and nothing else before I was full.
This place will be on my regulars stops list now. Perfect addition to El Segundo's downtown.
This place warms my cold cold heart. Out of this world service! I seriously have never gotten better service anywhere else. Tracy we will definitely be back. The owner welcomed us into his restaurant the way any gracious owner would welcome a guest into their own home. Or in my case they did not point to the sign "we reserve the rights to refuse service to anyone" DAMN SOUP KITCHEN!
He spoke with so much pride about his restaurant without the pretension and arrogance. Nothing fancy here except real honest good food and great service. We came in quite hungry and ordered 1/2 a chicken, 1 rack of st. louis ribs, sweet potato fries, and grilled veggies skewer but were told that they had ran out! It must have been the look of hunger in our eyes that Tracy took pity upon and totally took care of us! We were able to try out so many items on the menu! My favorites were the baby back ribs, the smoked sausages, potato, and beignets! I thought the st. louie ribs were too tough for me.. what can I say.. I'm a wuss. The sweet potato fries were also good with cinnamon and honey. I liked the flautas, they were crispy and perfectly fried in my opinion. The beignets were filled with bavarian cream, how could you hate on that? Well except my body trainer and my waist size but man oh man were they good. I've been told on some Saturday nights they make it real romantic with roasted garlic prime ribs and dim lights and nice silverware. WOW! I AM SOLD!
Definitely recommend! Come early because they tend to run out of food quick!
The special of the day was $2.00 rib tips. It was full meal's worth of rib tips - for two measly bucks! I'm coming back.
It is real easy to miss these guys on Hawthorne Boulevard. They have small signs that blend in with Kmarts signs and to be honest at first glance you may not see the set up from afar.
Britt's is located in the parking lot beyond the Kmart. It is an outdoor BBQ that is present only on weekends. They also do weekend delivery and cater events. Though they have a very humble establishment, it gets the job done whether you want to eat on the spot or take it to go. When one customer asked what particular style of BBQ Britt's was, the BBQ master at the grill replied "Torrance style!".
Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure this place is cash only. You can feed yourself for under $10.00. Full meals that include a sandwich, drink, and chips start at $6.00. The most expensive meal on the menu is the 1/2 rack of smoked spareribs with cowboy beans and potato salad for $9.00.
Because its in a parking lot, there is *tada, ample parking. It is not a bad spot to check out if you are in the area. Especially if you want a break after waiting in line at Kmart during the horrors of Christmas shopping.
Due to its transportable nature and lack of posted hours, I fear that Britt's BBQ may take off at any second and relocate without any way of me knowing where they ended up. I would like to see this little place settle in and stick around on the weekends for my future adventures in Torrance land.
Just what the El Segundo/LAX Airport area needed a good BBQ place with excellent service and delicious food. If you want good meat this is the place. As a first time visitor I ordered the spare ribs, cucumber salad, and chili mac and I was not disapponited. Meaty ribs and yummy sides who can ask for more on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, etc.? The service was exceptional. They made me feel welcomed and I'll be returning for more good food and fine Southern California hospitality.
Hey the owner's are really nice and It hits the spot when youre craving BBQ. Our family get's the Beef quesadilla which is only "2.75 an order.
The baby back ribs had a strange aftertaste, the cucumber salad was bad, and the beans were undercooked and too smokey. The staff were very loud, and talking about inappropriate personal things. It's also not a good sign when you see a staff member get his take-out dinner from next door instead of eating Britt's food. Not worth the money or the time.
Just opened a few days ago. On Main St. in El Segundo.
It was very busy. Staff was a little overwhelmed but very nice! The owner was walking around checking on people.
Purchased a pulled pork sandwich combo, comes with one side and a drink. (got baked beans)
Also purchased, chicken and ribs plate. My husband really liked this.
Said it had a nice smoked flavor. This is a Pepsi place no Coke products.
Good place, The only thing is the sweet potato fries were not very good.
They were very thin and too oily for my taste.
We took the food to go and the roll on my sandwich was soggy by the time I got home 5 mins later.
Over all good, would go again.
Oh they also threw in 3 extra sides for free! :) We offered to pay, nice of them.
At first I didn't think it would be that good. It's a small place, but the owners were very friendly and nice. I got the a full rack of ribs. It was awesome! They were meaty and the sause was excellent! I will definitely go back there again. I want to try their pulled pork sandwich next. I saw someone else get it and it looked good! Not sure if this is already mentioned but their web site is http://www.brittsbbqon...
The food was good and that's the only reason why we might go back. Arrived around 5:30 pm on a Sunday, ordered 1/2 chicken & baby back ribs. Turns out they were out of chicken, out of beef ribs and most of the sides including the potatoe rounds people are raving about. Eventually settled on spare ribs and baby back ribs with cole slaw and bbq beans. Got my order home and discovered that they just gave me whatever they had left. The food was good (to be fair) but for the price, I think we'll stay away until they get the kinks worked out.
