As a visitor to Chicago I was looking for a place to go off the beaten path. So for all of you who are looking to hang where the locals do, and experience something more than a "chain" coffee shop, I recommend finding your way to Bridgeport coffee! With a great selection sandwiches, coffee, tea and sweets, and the bonus of a wi-fi connection, its not hard to spend a couple hours here.
I have only stopped here in the AM., and I enjoyed a breakfast sandwich, tried an iced chai latte, and the coffee cake was extremely good! This is not your typical run-of-the-mill "mainstream" place. Its unique, quaint, and very welcoming....they even welcome pets.
It feels good to support a local place like Bridgeport, try this place if your ever in the neighborhood, or even if you're not you won't be disappointed!
I'm glad this place exists, because it's only a few blocks from my house. That said, the coffee isn't THAT good (it's better than a Starbucks, but it doesn't measure up to the best Chicago has to offer). In fact, it's possible that the new Bridgeport restaurant Nana makes better espresso drinks, though I've only been in there once, so I don't want to say for sure.
Couple other complaints:
The free wifi is nice, but very unreliable. Several times I've come in here to work and I can't get on the internet.
Also, in the summer the place gets ungodly hot. They have a big air conditioner over the door, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Actually, I went in here to hang out on one of the warmish early November days we had recently (it was like 65 degrees), figuring it would be fine. No, somehow it was still incredibly hot in there. Maybe it's just me, but I don't usually have that problem. Anyway, since it'll be winter soon, I'll probably spend more time in here.
All in all, it's not a bad place, but it's not all it's cracked up to be on Yelp. Worth a visit.
Laid back, unfussy coffee shop. On certain days, the area reminds me of Brooklyn (when I don't see locals wearing White Sox paraphenalia).
Latte was OK. Milk was too hot and too foamy. For a second, I thought I ordered a cappucinno.
Tap, Tap, Tap...yes it's me again looking for a quick coffee fix. Happy to see there's no line. Step right up place my order, pay up. Great.
Then a second later, another person walks up to the counter, for a moment it looked like she was going to be told, "I'll be right with you," but no the guy behind the counter hesitates then takes her order. Okay, no big deal. Just a moments delay.
But now, there's a big deal she ordered a sandwich and he is starting to prepare her sandwich before getting me my coffee. So I say, "excuse me can you start on my coffee?" He says, "in a second, I'm getting this started up."
Look, isn't this America? The get in line and wait your turn country! Hey I didn't order any thing that needed a bunch of prep, and hate to say this but I was there first.
Sorry, I guess I'm not laid back enough for BCC. I do like their coffee, however I'm going to curtail my visits to when I have mucho extra time on my hands, which means I won't be a regular here since, mucho extra time is something I don't have much of.
I can't blame them for being as I said before, friendly easy going and chit chatty, that's as Borat would say, very nice. But, starting to prepare the order that came in after me, well that's just not right.

I really have to say that I don't see what the big deal is about this place. I mean---it's fine, it's pleasant. Nobody spat in my face or took a shit on my plate. But why is this the #1 rated place on yelp?! I just don't see it...
I went the other day and order their BLT wrap with avocado. It tasted fine. It came with plain old Jay's chips out of the bag. After all, there were only about 4 sandwiches to choose from. But show me something exciting, something different, something creative for pete's sake!
Maybe it's just because there are no other decent sandwiches places in 3-mile radius. Or maybe it's just because I live near the Bongo Room, Milk & Honey, Birchwood Kitchen and so many other amazing places that have spoiled me. Or maybe Bridgeport Coffee just exemplifies the difference between the North and South Side. Maybe Bridgeport coffee is the embodiment of that blue-collar, damon runyon, old chicago persnality that asks for their coffee black, prefers white bread and thinks alioli is a part of a women's body. Maybe this is like a red state/blue state thing on a more localized level. Because I just can't think of any other explanation why everyone is popping wood about this place.
So anyway, if you are in the area I wouldn't tell you not to go. It's very inexpensive and food is fine. But if you are wondering what all the hype is about and thinking about making the trip from your area, save yourself gas money. It ain't worth it.
Delicious Coffee, delicious sandwiches, delicious shakes, possibly delicious baristas, though I will say that they are definitely nice. I seem to find myself at this bridgeport gem any time I run out of beans here at the old apartment, and I would definitely say that it is worth a trip if you are as far west as western, as far north as adams, as far east as the lake, and as far south as.. well, not sure about the far-south side. I haven't tried the coffee samplings on that side of town.
The mayor's blend is my favorite. Also, their 'bean burger' is good, and especially good if you get it with a little bit of turkey on it.
Service is great, polite & welcoming. Even a weirdo like me, with my fucked up hair, and "i haven't talked to anyone in 5 days" mannerisms will be welcomed like the pope at a 1970s canaryville church. Go to this place! You won't regret it.
That's all I have to say. If I find any coffee that's better than the mayor's blend, I'll update this post and recommend it to you.
Bridgeport Coffee Company, where have you been all my life?! Oh, duh, right there at 31st and Morgan. I'm so sorry I never visited you while I lived in the neighborhood... being east of 35th makes it hard to hear about a place like you because I was just never in your neck of the woods for any reason. But I know you now and I will never be able to go to another coffee house again without thinking about you and your awesomeness.
Thank you for your wonderful outdoor seating that greets customers as they approach the lovely shop. Though I have never treated myself to an outdoor coffee or tea, I love that you have the available option because the weather in Chicago has been beautiful lately. Thank you for having amazingly inexpensive and delicious coffee all day long. I love that you gave me a discount for bringing in my own mug, too - I love recycling! Thank you for making your own fruit cups fresh everyday and charging almost nothing to purchase them.
Thank you for posting an interesting fact of the day so that I can learn something new and interesting - I need trivia in my life. Thank you for posting the day's weather right on the wall so everyone knows what's up as they walk out the door to embark on their day. Thank you for having one of the cleanest, loveliest bathrooms I have ever been in. Thank you for having a lot of comfortable seating with plenty of outlets so I can plug in my laptop. Thank you for having awesome free wireless (with password prominently displayed for customers to see) so I can work at the coffee shop instead of my office.
And last, but certainly not least, thank you for having the most excellent employees on the face of the planet. Both were friendly and super psyched to be working so early in the morning and I love that (since I'm a morning person). Thank you for knowing the names and faces of your regular customers and making them feel welcome - I appreciate this greatly.
So, Bridgeport Coffee Company, thank you for existing and being the awesome coffee place that you are so that people like me can come in and enjoy excellent coffees and teas in a really pleasant atmosphere.
On one recent visit I eyed the carrot muffin and was told they were low fat. I made a face to show my disappointment and was toldby the young man behind the counter, "don't let that fool you it's our best muffin."
I'd have never known it was low fat if he hadn't told me.
On another visit I got some yogurt and granola and I'll be damned if that wasn't the best freaking granola, like...EVER!! Totally love this place.

Okay, it's time I jump on the bandwagon and put in my vote that the Bridgeport Coffee Company is a hidden gem and yes, makes some of the best donuts I've ever had.
The only problem is, I'm not a coffee drinker. Can't stand the stuff, and more than a few times the smell of roasting coffee discouraged me for entering some mornings, way back when I used to work for Benton House and would contemplate stopping in for a breakfast bagel (and donut) on the way to work or contemplate stopping in for an afternoon bagel (and donut) on the way home from work. Of course, on mornings when the coffee smell wasn't as strong, the allure of the donut smell could break through and bid me to come in and partake.
Nowadays, my path doesn't take me that way. I rely on gifted donuts from my girlfriend who will take the time to travel that distance to her new favorite little coffee-shop.
Of course, I can never forget the awesome food, the great shakes, and the very kind staff who would even let me and a group of like-minded nerds play a little Dungeons & Dragons at one of their tables an afternoon or two during the week.
So yea, kudos to you, Bridgeport Coffee Company. Add my 5-star review to the pile, and make sure you've got some donuts the next time my gal comes by, so she can make sure to bring me back a few for when I'm done with a long day of work.
This place is a solid 4 stars.
I had a grilled chicken sandwich and a Green Tea smoothie (good stuffs). They serve a good variety of drinks such as soda, coffee, tea and shakes. The service there is great.
The most enjoyable aspect of the shop is the vibe. The decoration and the settings provide a chilled/artsy atmosphere. There is a patio, a mini mezzanine leading to a big window and enough tables of different size to never run out of seats.
It's the best coffee place in Bridgeport area for sure.
I found this cafe through Yelp while searching for a place in Bridgeport with free wifi (I had an hour to kill before a meeting) and stumbled across a gem. The Bridgeport Coffee Company is a contender for best iced mocha in the city - the other one is Star Lounge Cafe - and I don't say that lightly. Yum!
The atmosphere is comfortable, the barista was friendly, and there's a little outdoor patio. What was amusing is that the barista was wearing another cafe's T-shirt - but that other cafe isn't in the state, so I guess that's OK. :-)
If I lived anywhere nearby I'd be here all the time. Thanks Yelp!
Since my last review my Wife and I have gone to BCC almost every weekend so I can now comment on the consistency. The coffee is always good the Lattes are exceptional. The food is good. Always busy but not packed. You can always find a table.
Staff and customers are always friendly. We (my Wife and I and my Daughter) enjoy having breakfast and coffee here over a game of checkers.
Try to get your Latte brewed by the master herself, the girl with a neck band tattoo. She's fast and my Wife claims her Latte's are the best she's had.

First off this place is long over due it's about time Bridgeport has got a coffee house that we can actually hang out at. I can really appreciate something so simple and yet so close that if I wanted to I could just walk (unlikely but in walking distance) I really like that every day they have a coffee of the day from all over the world you can try out. And the cookies and brownies are quite delicious I'm definitely a fan and will be coming back. They also have free wi-fi.
Bridgeport Coffee just gets better. If there were a sixth star I'd hit it.
Today I had yet another cappuccino that was spellbinding, but this time my favorite barista clued me in to her favorite syrup: Almond Roca. Sure, I may be easy to please but the syrup was quite good, and I like being pushed to try new things--even when it's a trifling thing such as syrup flavor.
It turns out Bridgeport Coffee offers substantial sandwiches too. Today I had the turkey and swiss on wheat tricked out with yellow mustard that blew my mind for some reason. More importantly, a vegan put together my turkey sandwich. Much love for putting aside a touch of orthodoxy for my benefit. That's altruism plain and simple.

Since this is the local coffee shop in my neighborhood I wanted to go check it out and was not disappointed. I went on a rainy day and did not want to leave the shop. It was welcoming with plenty of seating. The staff were helpful and very knowledgeable when it came to discussing the coffee beans they sell. I sampled the coffee that was brewing but ended up going with a pumpkin spice latte, though I had high hopes it still did not compare to Starbucks (that specific drink anyways). I definitely will be back to try other drinks and to buy whole coffee beans. In addition, they also sell sandwiches, loose leaf tea, and some other food items. Great place to spend a few hours with friends or to be by yourself!
This place is practically perfect!
Locally roasted drinks? Unique flavors of tea that I can't just pick up from the grocery store (I don't drink coffee)? Iced or hot, really? And they have soy milk? And the decor includes pictures of far-off lands (from where I assume they get their fair trade coffee beans)? A friendly staff? Outdoor seating? Whoa, did I just step into a cafe on the northside? Am I really in Bridgeport?
Yes indeed.
All I had was an iced jasmine-something-or-other tea, and it was like drinking a flower! I'll bet my breath smells like perfume now. I sipped my tea whilst reading a book, and noticed that the flowers on the table are real! Not silk. Maybe that's not a big deal to some readers, but it's something you don't always see in this part of town. I don't drink much else besides tea at cafes, hence why I'm reviewing after one visit. After all, would my review really change after drinking all the dozen types of tea they have available?
So why not 5 stars? Well, I haven't tried the food yet, but so far, it doesn't look all that promising. Vegans can get a veggie sandwich with no cheese or mayo, but you're left with standard stuff (like you might get at Subway): lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, oil and vinegar. But if the veggies are organic, locally grown, and not iceberg lettuce, that's a different story.
Find a local vegan baker and sell some vegan desserts, and I'll give you a 5 ;-).
This place is dynamite! The service is always friendly and attentive. The coffee is fresh and consistent. Yummy food and snacks.
Oh, and the price is right!
Great coffee, donuts, and sandwiches what more can I ask for
Outdoor seating great
Staff fabulous I cant get enough of this place I go here all the time with my boyfriend and its definitely becoming our spot in fact I cant wait to go tomorrow please check this place out!
Great feel, neighborhood feel, and nice people, and everyone seems sincere and lots of smiles. Also seem dog friendly as there was a beautiful boxer right next to me. In addition the food is awesome. I had the bean burger and the veggie wrap which were great. And the Matte late which was ok..but they said they are still working on that one. The prices were also good and they have free wifi and a nice setup so u dont feel cramped or rushed along with big windows and lots of lights and very clean. GOOD JOB I WILL BE BACK.
So I'm staying in Bridgeport for the next couple of months, and I've been exploring the neighborhood--so far, Bridgeport Coffee Company is my finest discovery.
It's located just blocks away from Halsted and 31st, on 31st and Morgan. It's small inside, but decorated in that kitschy coffee shop manner that's both homey and inviting. There's 10 or so tables inside to study, work, or have meetings--also, free wi-fi!
I'm not a big coffee drinker, but I really love their iced lattes. The coffee is a medium roast; smooth and not too bitter. They also offer tea in your own personal teapot, milkshakes and smoothies. I haven't tried the sandwiches yet, but I have tried the doughnuts, and Tina B. was spot on in her review--this is an awesome doughnut. Fresh, light, and with a hint of grease, this is one of my favorite doughnuts in Chicago.
Bridgeport Coffee is a fun little place in a pretty quiet neighborhood. I wish they were open a little later (they close at 8 on weekdays), but otherwise, this place is awesome.
I walk pass this cafe on my way to the Halsted 8 bus every now and then, here's to that, because it a heck of a place. Service is great, very charming people, damn good strawberry cheesecake pastry's, free wi-fi, a true gem of a place tucked away in Bridgeport! Also, i believe they sell rootbeer floats.
Bridgeport needs this place, that's for sure. And I appreciate having somewhere many people outside the neighborhood don't know about. They have nice, basic sandwiches at reasonable prices, and their coffee is good. However, overall the staff is not pleasant, very arrogant, and not exceptionally well-versed in coffee. The owner is a really nice guy, but I think that works against him in keeping sub-par staff on hand. There is some younger guy who thinks (or maybe is) he's a manager of some sort. He is a jerk. Typical Bridgeport late-20's guy who works in a coffee shop...enough said.
So, go if you want a quiet place to study, or a nearby sandwich shop, but don't expect good service.
BCC! what up?!
it took me forever to finally go here. i have a couple of friends that live super close and the rest of us all live near by. one Sunday after a night out, we all decided to meet here for some breakfast and coffee and to recap the nights events that had transpired.
man, i coulda kicked myself in the a$$ for not visiting sooner. i had a coffee of sorts that was extra decent accompanied by a breakfast bagel that totally hit the spot. we all sat outside and let the cool breeze help with the hangover. the staff was pretty nice but for one reason or another it was as hot as Hades in there. if i woulda sat inside to eat, i would have surely passed out. idk how there were people in there on laptops doing work. or maybe it was just bc i was sweating the hangover out. who knows. BCC, is where its @ for some breakfast on a sunday morning. I've also been there for lunch and it has been consistently awesome all around.
really decent prices. great food. pretty close to my place. rad. yeah, i said rad.
I love this place! It made my move to Bridgeport so much sweeter. Good coffee too, I've brought a few bags home and it doesn't disappoint in the home pot either. My fav sandwich is the chicken salad, I just can't seem to move past it to try anything else. Super friendly staff too.
I really enjoy this mid sized coffee house and the wifi really came in handy. Parking easily available and good java to boot. I did not try the pastries or sandwiches(I have an excuse to return again). Cool place!
Was surprised to find a coffee shop in Bridgeport but this place is great. The staff is always friendly and their coffee is impressive.
Update: Went on thursday morning for some leisurely sipping and serious eating before the Sox 1:00 game. Got a ham, egg, and cheese on a jalapeno cheddar bagel. I can't express how amazing this thing was. Washed it down with an iced mocha. All this done al fresco on a gorgeous morning. Life is good sometimes.

Before we got the food I already knew you yelpers steered me right: cozy atmosphere, outside seating, wifi, and friendly and knowledgeable staff. We had a great doughnut, coffee, sandwich, chai masala latte, and fresh fruit... even by my pansy Floridian standards. They are reasonably priced and they even have swipey punch cards! A little out of my way, but definitely worth it. 5 Stars!
This morning I decided to break free from my antisocial ways and explore my new neighborhood. I am still fairly new here. Anyway, this was my second time here, and I must say that they have very good coffee (they only offered whole, skim, or soy milk--some people do like 2%). I liked the laid back atmosphere and the staff was very nice to me. My sandwich was pretty good as well as the pastry that I bought.
I just have 2 suggestions:
Add a couch or a section with slightly more comfy seating and add the names of your pastries to your trays.
Once we got it straight with the help that the bagel and cream cheese was "to go," all was good. The confusion was that, since we were waiting for a cab, I said "to go" but would eat it there. That nuance confused the counter dude but a smart lady worker interjected: "he might need to leave before he's done eating, so put it in a bag for him." Yep, job placement's not random.
Quaint, nice furniture that doesn't look like it was stolen off a college kid's front porch, reasonably priced sandwiches, and a variety of coffee and tea.
If this place was in my hood, I'd be a regular.
i come here every single day... sometimes twice.
coffee is great. food is great.
the staff couldn't get any more perfect.
i take care of a little one (around age 2) mon-fri and the baristas are nothing but amazing to her. especially on tuesdays... play group is at the cafe from 9-11 am. if you dont like little kids.. be careful. but whoever is working handle the business of the cafe with a group of little hellions running around like champs. :-)
everything you would want in a local coffee shop.
Bridgeport Coffee Company is definitely the place to go on the southside for coffee. They roast their beans down the street, and everything is either fair trade, organic, or - in the case of my Rwanda coffee that I CANNOT WAIT to make in my french press - "from the buffcoffee washing station owned by the genocide widow Epiphanie Mukashyaka". So all in all your coffee is benefiting someone or someplace. Makes you feel good when you buy it or drink it. Especially since they don't overcharge like Intelligentsia. This Rwandan coffee that won the Cup of Excellence award and benefits victims of genocide costs $16 for 12oz. (At Intelligentsia it would cost like $30 for 8oz and they'd charge you $10 for a cup from the clover machine. Get over yourself Intelligentsia. Your coffee is overrated anyways. But your tour of the roasting facility is pretty rad.)
BCC also has the best donuts ever, tea, sandwiches, bagels, syrups for sale, and Ice Cream. Plus outdoor seats. I'm really not sure why Yelp hasn't done office hours here other than the fact that it's not terribly close to the el. It's a mile from the Halsted orange line, but it's summer, and if you really are that lazy/for reasons can't walk that far, you take the Halsted Bus from the orange line stop and get off at 31st. It's 2 blocks away from there. Not too bad.
Note - I used to have a really snippy review up of this place after coming here multiple times, only for the staff to act like I wasn't even in line, skipping over me to take other people's orders. I didn't go back for quite awhile as I get the feeling that if I wasn't here every day I would never get treated the same. I got over it though because I really wanted my neighbor Kevin, who is more of a coffee fanatic than me, to try the coffee here. The staff here has totally redeemed itself from the last time I was in. Everyone was super nice and helped my friend Kevin, who is even more of a coffee fanatic than myself, pick out a bag of coffee that was "mild yet strong". He chose the Nicaragua which I am sure he'll enjoy. They made my iced americano perfect, and they were open on Memorial Day! You made our trip to find a flower shop that was open worth our time (because we never did find an open flower shop in McKinley Park/Bridgeport. Flower Cottage and Fasan's were both closed. Such is life).
Also, if anyone who works here reads this, the residents of McKinley Park would totally be ecstatic if you built another location farther west. These days, our idea of a coffee shop is the Starbucks in Target or Dunkin' Donuts because it's all we've got. Sooner than later that whole Central Manufacturing District is going to be lofts (we already got notice of the zoning change), and that's hundreds of new residents looking for a coffee shop within walking distance. Not to mention all the single family homes and commuters at the 35/Archer Orange Line stop. Just a thought.

Bridgeport Coffee is one of the first coffee houses that I visited when I came to Chicago. Staff is local and friendly and know the regulars by their names. I usually get the house coffee and the occasional breakfast bagel sandwich. Weekends are usually the busiest w everyone on their laptops working the wifi. Seating indoors and outdoors, staff brings out ordered food to the table. Local roasts and local baked goods. Highly recommend stopping by!
They have the best doughnut.
Not like "on the Southside" or "in the city of Chicago" kind of best, like the best doughnut period. Period.
They order them from some nearby Lithuanian bakery, but the guy there won't tell me where exactly, because I think he's afraid I'm going to jack the delivery truck some early morning.
It's giant and like kind of glazed, not at all cakey. It's honestly more of a doughnut shaped beignet. With a chocolate glaze. And there's kind of a wonderful, well...oiliness with each bit, along with a slight airiness. I don't even usually like doughnuts usually. For a cost of .89! And they are fresh, like perfectly fresh.
I love that this place uses really local suppliers. The coffee is okay, but honestly, I'm not really that into coffee, so you probably shouldn't base any coffee stuff on me - but it is strong and they seem to know a lot about it. It is a super cute, but small coffee house and the people there are the just right kind of friendly, not too perky in at 6 a.m., so you don't get annoyed. But they DO know that "grumble grumble uh uh" means coffee before dawn and that a head nod means "Yes, and a doughnut, too please." And they let you use a card with no minimum purchase, which is sweet.
Today I left with a bag of like eight for $6 and it felt like I was stealing. I passed a Dunkin Donuts just down the street from here and I hope that all of the dumb bitches up in there never ever go down a few blocks and take my sacred doughnuts. Let them eat sprinkles!
Friendly staff, comfy spaces to study, nice pastries, and an excellent tea selection; it's all I want from a neighborhood cafe.
Now that I'm more local I intend to take advantage of this retreat more often; it's a hidden gem in the Bridgeport area.
This is one of the best hidden gems in Bridgeport!
EVERYTHING is excellent & the staff treats you as if you are gold.
If you live in Bridgeport you need to go HERE. And who can beat free WI-FI? Bring the lappy, order a cup o' Joe & enjoy!
I call this place my "secret cafe," in fact, when my friends ask me about it, they also call it the secret cafe. Great coffee, great prices, and their toasted sandwiches are really good. They're a lot like Potbelly sandwiches before Potbelly's became overly commercial.
The artwork on the wall is by local artists and it constantly changes. I think they roast their own beans as well. Its' a great neighborhood joint that I love to study, grade papers, and relax with my friends. Parking on the street is never a problem either.
I love this place. It's the kind of place you wouldn't want Check Please to visit because it wouldn't want people to crowd into it, but at the same time, I wish them all the best because I want them to stay in business.
I have now been in here quite a few times, Finally a couple weeks ago they were not out of the doughnuts that Tina B. wrote about. I went back today for another one.
Best. Doughnut. Ever. Super sweet chocolate glaze, super light-but slightly greasy dough...YUM! So worth the fact that they have so much sugar in them that I just want to nap after wards!

Easily one of the top 3 coffeeshops in the city. Great food, great drinks, great service, great place. It's quality, not flair or fancy that they're going for, and they deliver consistently every time.
I am so excited that I was introduced to this great little place this afternoon! My friend took me out to lunch here this afternoon and everything was great. Friendly staff, comfortable surroundings, and amazing sandwiches! I ordered my usual whenever I go to sandwich places. Turkey, Swiss, mayo, lettuce, and pickles all on a wheat. I had no idea that this sandwich was going to be this good and was pleasantly surprised that it was toasted. yummmmmm!!! The best thing about this place is that it is not far from my school. I love that I will be able to come here before school to get a chai and a sandwich to go. Thanks friend for the lunch and for introducing this place to me! YAY!
