11 reviews for Brides by Demetrios
I was pretty nervous about going there since I read the reviews here. However, I was looking for a specific dress that they had in stock and in my size!! So, I took the risk and made an appointment with Pat. I just wanted to see that specific dress that fit me to get an idea. I was not planning to buy a dress!
However, I went there with a positive attitude and excited to try on the dress that I had saved a picture of since May of 09. When I got there I was impressed on the dress selection. I went to Macy's Bridal Salon in downtown the night before and it was the opposite experience (over my budget - small dress samples.)
Everyone at Demetrios was really nice and polite.
Pat was serious over the phone and I was a little concerned however when I met her, she gave me the impression that she is very knowledgeable and knows her line of work. She just happens to not be hyper like some sales ladies. I felt comfortable with her - kind of gave me the motherly feeling.
I tried on different dresses since I was shocked on the selection in my budget and pretty ones too. I tried on 3 or 4 dresses before THE ONE - which was the same dress that I saved on my computer.
I liked the experience there, the dresses are in better condition as well and I appreciated that there has more plus-size dresses and the staff was nice and polite.
I made a deposit that night and got a their famous 15% discount. I called the next day to pay 1/2 of the dress since they will not order the dress until you pay 1/2 of the price. Which is understandable - they are a business and it takes up to 6 months for them to make the dress and ship it to Demetrios.
I will update on how things go with my alterations next year.
My consultant, Shirley was very professional and polite. I had tried on a Demetrio's dress at Macy's but wasn't sure if it was the one. I found it very easy to make an appointment at Demetrio's and went there on a weekday. The dress I wanted was in California but the sampe was shipping back that week.
I tried on a few gowns. I was looking for a ballgown and they had a lot of diffrerent styles and even price ranges. My price range was $1500-$2000 and many of the dresses I liked on the rach fell into that price range. My consultant pulled all of the style numbers I liked on their website that they had and also pulled on she thought I would like. I left empty-handed but made an appointment to come back the following saturday.
I ended up saying yes to the dress on my Saturday appointment. The dress came back from California and I loved it. They gave me the 15% discount (I had to mention it though) even though it wasn't my first time in the store because that dress wasn't there the first time. They also gave me 15% off the slip skirt (to make the dress poufier) and a veil.
We will see how alterations go, but overall I was very pleased.
Bridal store was clean. When we made an appointment, the sales person was prompt and on-time. Selection was so-so. Prices are definitely above the David's Bridal budget.
Now for the bad part:
BE CAREFUL OF THE VERY PUSHY SALES LADY, Marge. You are told that you can only get the "first time" 15% discount if it's your first visit and next time you come back, you can't have it. LADIES...DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SALES TALK. Walk out the door without giving your credit card info. Take note of the style of dress you want. You can definitely get it at a cheaper price somewhere. The dress I saw here for $1500, I got for $925 somewhere else.
However, if you really fall in love with something here that you think you cannot get at another place for a cheaper price, go ahead and get it. I'm just warning you that you will probably fall in love with the dress and commit to give your downpayment for the dress right there when you may be able to get it cheaper somewhere else.
Good luck!
In terms of bridal stores in Schaumburg, this one was the cleanest and nicest (but still kind of gross). But the sales lady was completely obnoxious and pushy. She pulled my bride aside to try to convince her to get a specific dress in white, which she specifically said she did not want. She also pushed for the most expensive, yet least appealing dress. I actually had to butt in and tell the sales person to shut it, because her best friends know her the best.
This is the type of place where they will tell you that EVERYTHING looks FABULOUS on you, just to make a sale. Their dresses are beautiful, but it was a horrible experience in my opinion.
This place SUCKS. I saw someone else rating this, and I remembered I went there as a bridesmaid for my sister. They got the following things WRONG:
DRESS!
Size! Now I'm a big girl, but they gave me a dress that was 2 sizes too big, so I had to not only pay the "plus size" charge (fine) but THEN had to pay an additional $100+ to have it altered.
Service! SUCKED. Pushy, greedy, and slooooooooooooooooow.
Cost! They were extremely expensive.
I've been a bridesmaid so many times, there are much nicer places. Don't waste your precious time here brides, or your bridesmaids!
From start to finish this was not a pleasant experience. When we walked in, the sales women were all on the phone. It took about 5 minutes for them to even acknowledge we were there even though we had an appointment. The lady who ended up helping us told us to look around for a few minutes to see what they had but after about 30 seconds she pretty much demanded I follow her to the dressing room to try on what she picked out. In the dressing room, she took to telling me about the dresses while I was standing there in nothing but my underwear. She'd then leave the curtain open while I was in there nearly naked.
The dresses themselves were really not my style. They were all very poofy, sparkly, overdone. I was having My Big Fat Greek Wedding flashbacks. The lady barely listened to what I had to say and was very pushy. After we kind of realized they didn't have anything I liked, she all but pushed us out the door even though we were the only customers in the store.
Demetrio's is niiiiice. No pink, no frilly chandeliers, no pushing invitations. It's classy. They assign you a consultant who pulls dresses for you, and they have a nice sitting area where your visitors can sit and view the gowns. I really appreciated that my mom and sister could view the gowns but didn't have to cram into the dressing room with me.
Demetrio's has more variety than most shops and they have some unusual styles and fabrics. I was shopping for anything but a strapless gown and appreciated that they had lots with straps or halters.
It was a complete zoo, though... I had to wait until 15 min after my appointment before there was a free dressing room. Go on a weekday if you can. And whether you "believe" you need an appointment or not, you'll get better and faster service if you have one.
If you prefer to have a bridal experience where you don't feel like you are consistently stalked (you know when the saleslady follows you because she's so fearful you'll take a pic of the gown and go somewhere else and buy it or have a moment of privacy).. this might be a place you might want to go.
We happened to see this spot while we were driving by and after a dissapointing visit to another bridal shop.. we stopped by. They didn't mind that we didn't have an appt (nor do I believe you ever need an appt). They also had a sample sale going on which is going on for another month or so. The saleslady was friendly.. young.. and listened to what we were looking for. She gave us several options and was very helpful.
They do have an in house seamstress that is only available at select times. We really liked Rosa.. she told us what each dress would actually look like after all the alterations. They have a flat fee of $350 for any type of alteration you are considering.. except for an extra $15 for cups sewn in.
I don't think they have the best veil selection though. They do offer discounts on bridesmaid gowns if you purchase the wedding gown there. Nor do I believe they have the best prices for veils or accessories. But they do have a versatile selection for dresses.. and friendly service. Especially if you're looking for something other than.. sleeveless dresses.
My experience here was ok. It wasn't amazing and it wasn't terrible. I'm indifferent. I had an appointment so we got right in without waiting on a Saturday. You can look through their stock of gowns here and decide what you want to try on, which is nice, but also overwhelming because they have a lot. I was told when I called to make the appointment that I should come in knowing some style numbers that I was interested in because they would ask. So I looked online and found a few but they never asked. I forgot about those, so I didn't ask but looking back I don't think they had any of the dresses in the line I was interested in.
My consultant was Jackie and she was very nice and very helpful. For the most part, she understood the style I was looking for and brought me gowns she thought I might like. There were a few that I wasn't interested in at all. But I think that's because, from what I've seen, their dresses are heavily beaded, or heavily lacy or very princessy, which just wasn't the look I was going for. I didn't feel pressured to buy, which is good.
Their set-up is kind of weird, because all the dressing rooms are in a long hallway so there were multiple times that there was a traffic jam of brides and dresses getting stepped on.
I bought my wedding dress here--they have a good selection of dresses, but they are a little pricey. I bought my dress the first day I went in, and they gave me a 20% discount for buying the dress that day.
THE PROBLEM: They give you VERY INACCURATE dress sizes when they fit you. They tell you to order your dress in a MUCH larger size than you need. I had 7 bridesmaids, and all of their dresses came WAY too big!!!! They were absolutely unwearable until being completely altered. If you buy a dress here--DO NOT go with the size they tell you to. Try on a similar dress in a size that fits you, and get that size.
Demertrios in Schaumburg was nice. Mandy my sales lady was helpful and for all those brides too be saying bridal consultants are pushy well "Hello that is there job" and yes every consultant works on commission!!! Demertrios had a large selection of dresses and were reasonable priced. I purchased my dress from here and Iam happy with the results. The front desk can be busy at times and the ladies are alittle dippy for my taste but that seems to happen every where I go.
