Great Atmosphere really, wish they had some wifi.

I came hear in the morning today alone.  My wife is attending the ASH conference, something about hematology.  Doesn't matter, point is I woke this morning knowing that I was to do a self-guided coffee tour of the area.  I came in ordered a coffee then sat down and thought wow this is nice.  The atmosphere in this coffee house next to the trolley tracks is so wonderful.  It feels relaxing to just sit and enjoy the brick work inside with a coffee in hand.  The coffee is pretty good and its a cozy place.   What more can one ask for in a local cafe?...hint: wifi

Eh. It's just okay. The food is average. They don't have wifi which is weird for a coffee shop, and the staff is all over the place.
The atmosphere is nice on their patio.
    Overall just average :/

I really like this spot for lunch.  The patio at the back, really makes you feel like you are in a city.  I think it is because you have the trolley line right there, you imagine you could be in Amsterdam or Dusseldorf - but with better weather.

The fare is simple sandwiches, wraps and salads - and the perennial favorite quiche.  The patio is dog friendly and when I was there last week there was entertainment.  Ok it was Jazz which I find as entertaining as visiting the dentist - but I can see what they are trying to do.

    Light fare, tasty food. Simples!

So it's a cute little corner spot, with a charming brick exterior and a nice patio, which is usually busy with local Marina folks.  I get the impression that this is more of a neighborhood spot, but it would probably not draw anybody from a distance.  The muffins and pastries are pretty good, the breakfast stuff is just a bit average.   They serve Cafe Moto coffee, but not as good as from the cafe itself.  Juices are from Naked, and they don't have any fresh squeezed.....so in the end, it is convenient and attractive for sipping outdoors, but lacks any true differentiating factor, especially with regards to the food and coffee(their main products).

Found this place on yelp and as soon as I walked in, I swear it was a hip Denny's, it was overly mature adults everywhere!!!  However, the atmosphere is nice and  has a large sitting patio where you can enjoy your food and drinks.  I cant speak so much for the food since I came here mainly for tea and coffee however when I looked around at peoples food, the portions seem generous!  Tea and coffee ordered was deli!  and reasonable in price!  I would come here again and making a mental note to make sure I try their breakfast sandwiches.... Almost forgot the only downer to this place is there no WI-FI.......

Pros: INDIE, cool location, great (balanced) caramel latte, yummy (like homemade) soups, a good selection of delicious pastries, outdoor seating, dog friendly.

Cons: Closes at 2 pm, could be SO much cuter (see below), a tad pricey, big city service (see below again).

Being the woman that I am, it kinda kills me how cute this place could really be...with (consignment?) artwork, furniture with personality, plants and fresh flowers...you get the picture.

This is the kind of place where you should easily get to feel like a regular and get some small town service inside the city. But, the several times I've gone here, the service is just functional...not unfriendly, just focused on getting it done.

Great independent coffee shop in the Marina District.  We live just across the street so find ourselves heading over there frequently for food and drinks out on the patio.

Service is always quick and the staff are friendly.  Dogs are allowed on the patio so we like having a place we can bring our pup to.

Wish they were open longer on the weekends but they close at 2pm everyday.  A few years ago they tried staying open later but I guess they didn't get enough business.

Tried the turkey sandwhich and ceaser salad... big portion of it too.  the food was pretty good, but nothing out of the ordinary with what we ordered.  The coffee was great!  didn't need any cream or sugar!  And the patio was perfect for the day!

We had a small breakfast here on the way to the train station from the harbor area. Everything is ordered at the counter. Menu was limited to premade items and coffee was so-so.  We will likely be back, but wouldn't go out of our way.

Okay, so I've lived one block from this place for 10 years. And I've only been here about 10 times. Usually long lines to order, zero "flow" to the machine, and prices are on the high side for what you get but . . . .

I went there on a recent Sunday morning to meet friends and I must say I had a great time on the patio. Dog-friendly, kid-friendly, and perfect for a sunny San Diego day. Good coffee, I love their curry chicken salad, and I had a big piece of lemon cake that was outstanding.

Unisex bathroom could use some work. And I really wish the owner would do a little more to be a better neighbor in terms of monitoring "urban" issues.  Overall, cool spot but the staff tends to be a little "cooler than thou" and stand-offish. That's why only 3 stars.  You live in San Diego and work in the Marina District - now smile, damnit!

This is a cute little coffee shop in a really nice part of downtown. They have a great little breakfast burrito, Fair warning it is SMALL compared to the Mexican restaurant's behemoth burritos. But it tastes delightful. Prices here are a little on the higher side, similar to Starbucks' prices.

I love how dog friendly this place is. While sitting on the patio you meet many friendly people and their pooches!

One bad thing here is that they have no Wifi. They also are only open till 2 pm.

Great coffee shop to come enjoy San Diego's great weather with your puppy. I'll be back with mine!

I came in here recently on a Sunday apparently about 5 minutes after they had closed. There were still patrons in the place, the door wide open, and people behind the counter. I was told they are closed and they cannot serve me a coffee. Really??
Needless to say, I never went back and never will.

The absolute best Cappuccino I have had in the US! Makes me reminiscent of the trip I took to Europe a few years back where coffee is so much better than we can seem to make here. Brickyard takes me back to Europe with every sip. Further, their food is also great.

While in San Diego recently on vacation we ate here every morning for breakfast. A nice walk was a nice way to start off our morning, plus our hotel didn't have a continental breakfast, whats up with that?

Sitting on the corner of G & Kettner among the railroad tracks and train comes through every ten minutes or so, so if you are recovering from a hangover the morning after, you may want to pop a couple Advil first.

Their coffee is great, especially their mocha! Just be careful you don't drink it all before you finish your breakfast otherwise you will be ordering another.

I had their egg burrito the first morning which was delicious, but a little on the small side for the price, and apparently pre made, which is fine.

She had the quiche which was very good and cooked to perfection, and a very large portion.

On the second day we both had the pulled pork torta, which was a little expensive, but it was worth it both for taste and portion size! I dont think either of us ate again until dinner that day.

It is worth noting that the birds here are aggressive! Do not feed them or you will be pestered throughout your whole meal. You have to be tough with them! =)

Tho indoor seating is quite limited, they have a great patio outside to enjoy your meals, and the weather is always perfect for it. We will definitely be dining here again on our next trip to San Diego.

It's kind of funny how I stumbled upon this place. My original intent was to get morning walk in the Downtown San Diego area and later hit the stairs at the Convention Center. But it's funny how things happen when you are on your way to a certain place, but then the aroma of freshly baked goodies stops you at your tracks.

Upon walking in the Brickyard, the first thing you notice are the delicious looking desserts under a glass dessert tray. It's temptation staring right at you...particularly, the Almond Croissant.

The Almond Croissant had an Almond Paste Jelly inside and was layered with a lot of Almonds on the outside. This croissant was so good that I later ordered a Mini Almond Croissant "to go" (so that I can have a light snack later on in the day.)

The delicious croissant is part of the reason why I give the Brickyard 5 stars. What puts it up on top was the Quiche.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've had a craving for good slice of quiche. Unfortunately, none of the other restaurants I've been to, have quite stood out. There was either too much eggs that overpowered the taste, or the slice was just too small. There was even a problem I had with the crust at one restaurant which I thought wasn't flaky enough. Call me picky but I haven't had a good slice of quiche anywhere in San Diego until I went to the Brickyard this morning.

I ordered a Spinach and Mushroom Quiche that was homemade and freshly baked. This quiche was well balanced and all the flavors pretty much complimented each other. From the freshly cut Parmesan Cheese slices on top, to the spinach and mushroom slices mixed in with the eggs, this was the best quiche I've ever tasted. Even the crust was perfect.

I never did make that morning walk to the Convention Center, but the trade-off I got instead was a good meal. As I sit here typing this review and eating my Mini Almond Croissant with a cup of coffee, I can't help but think that I've found a Gem in Downtown San Diego. The food at the Brickyard is delicious, the aroma of the freshly baked goodies are "to die for," and the people that work here are very helpful and extremely nice.

The Brickyard Coffee and Tea Rocks!

Pros:  Great outdoor patio and atmosphere; also very nice location.  Coffee is pretty good.
Cons:  The staff is not very friendly, they hardly bus the tables.  We went today and there was only one table packed with dishes.  I asked one of the staff nicely to bus the table and was given a dirty look.  He then bussed about 1/2 of the table and left his tray and rag on the table while he was gone another ten minutes.  There is trash on the ground blowing around.
SO MUCH potentional, but needs to be run more efficiently.  We live in the neighborhood so we will return and hope for some improvement.  Did have lunch there another time and the food is pretty good.  Hoping this review will help manangement.  Didn't see any staff or management there today that seemed like they cared.  In fact, you get the impression the staff hates their job.

I've felt pretty meh by the food I've had here - I don't know... maybe they have some spectacular things that I just haven't experienced, but so far, the egg -based offerings, oatmeal, and muffins I've had haven't thrilled me. I did adore their chicken and rice soup, I must say. Oh, and those little fudge brownie things near the register? ACE. Try em, you must.

The service is reallly great though, but only if you come here regularly. your first time, it's almost a given that they'll be rude (my experience, and that of several friends.)
I love the outdoor seating, and that they're dog and smoke friendly (I don't smoke now, but when I did it was heavenly to have such a tolerant place near home.) i can't stand the sax player that does his biznass outside on certain days though.. way too loud, and the outdoor place is so pleasant.. it ruins the atmosphere.
They've got self serve free water inside, which I appreciate.
And there's something really charming about it, indoor and outside.

Overall, I find that I'm rather fond of it. I'd even give it four stars, but then I remember that I don't actually like the food here much at all.
Why do I like it then? ACK I wish I knew - But I do!

Stopped in here while I was attending a conference at the Manchester Grand Hyatt after seeing the reviews on yelp. I ended up with a coffee (an americano, which was fabulous) but I was disappointed in the breakfast selection and the lack of healthy options. I asked if I could get anything with egg whites instead of eggs and the woman at the counter told me it eggs were pre-made (boo) so they couldn't do whites. I then thought I'd get the granola with yogurt but they only had full fat yogurt.

"A" for the coffee and atmosphere.

This place has style! Interesting menu with yummy food. Offers both inside & outside seating. Parking is a bit annoying but we do live in San Diego people! Service unfortunately was not good, the woman behind the counter was short with me, appeared irritated and/or frustrated (there was no line and I just ordered a latte so it wasn't complex).

Would I go back? Yes, I would. But if the service attitude was the same, I'd go somewhere else.

    Terrible.

I really like the patio and the location ..but too bad that weird ass lady who works behind the register is sooo rude. my husband did warn me so many times of this lady.

so I went this morning to order my breakfast and she told me in a loud and rude way, it was embarrassing in front of others, "you talk to fast, you need to slow down..I don't write that fast" and then she was rude about repeating back my order. later when I said I wanted the bottle of water that I ordered she said she did'nt put it in my order and that i should have  notcied this missing when she reviewed the order with me. she was actually trying to pick a fight with me..bc my food was being made in the back, I didn't want to give any attitude and said nicely.."ok" didn't want my food to be tampered with....just in case.

but I don't think I'd ever go back here again bc of this weird, mean and obnoxious lady.

So...beware of the mean lady behind the cash register. very very weird person that makes you feel real uncomfortable when ordering. Without fail she is rude.

    I'd recommend going somewhere else.

    Eh, so-so.

I love the atmosphere, the place is simply adorable. I love the outdoor deck and that its pet friendly. The coffee items are so-so. A wee bit overpriced. The breakfast items that I've had are ok, nothing special.

The service is hit or miss. My first time there, the girl with the glasses was super rude. I live up the street, and its adjacent to our dog park, and I prefer to give my money to independent coffee shops then Starbucks. So we started going almost every day. After our first week, the same girl who was rude the first time, informed me that pets were not allowed inside, not even to order. I was confused, as I never put my 4 pound Maltipoo on the floor and would just order and go straight to the deck. I had watched others do the same thing, so I assumed it was ok. How else was I suppose to order?! To add insult to injury, she was rather loud about it. So I apologized and went outside. The man that brought me my mocha apologized and said she was like that often. I asked him about the policy and he said his boss didn't care, as long as we didn't stay inside. The only bad part about the deck is that they don't bus it enough and there is often trash floating around and birds EVERYWHERE.

We'll continue to go, simply because its supposedly pet friendly and convienant but I do hope someone in charge reads this review and makes some changes.

    LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

We discovered the brickyard after our horrible $50 breakfast at the holiday Inn (see my review... you'll get it)

The Brickyard has amazing food... amazing coffee... tea...

It's a little loud just to let you know as it's RIGHT at the hub of a few trolley/train track intersection... but not bad. The outdoor seating is great, and animals are absolutely welcome!

They bring your food to you when it's ready... but bus your own table.

    Awesome spot.

Lets hear it for the neighborhood coffee shop!

This is the anti starbucks!, with so many chain coffee shops nowadays it's hard to find a local spot like this.

Brickyard is small, and cozy with a great local feel to it. Enjoy your coffee and food outside on the patio on a beautiful day and you'll want to hang out there all day.

As far as the coffee and food goes, I'd say it's about average but they do have some unique menu items you won't find at other coffee places like quiche.

If you live in the area this is a great place to go!

I came here with my mom and sister. My sister and I liked the food, however my mom who got the breakfast burrito was disappointed. It was lukewarm and obviously premade then reheated. Don't get it or you'll regret it.

The only thing is that the cashier is rude. She would try to talk over me when I'm ordering, and then still get the order wrong even though I had to repeat myself 3 times.

Small but very quaint place. Very nice ambiance. Cute patio with a Jazz saxophone player playing soothing jazz licks in this laid back setting. Trolley runs right next to the Brickyard giving it an added visual. I found myself expecting a poetry reading to break out at any moment. As for the food, I enjoyed a cranberry walnut muffin which was fresh and delicious. My girlfriend got a bagel melt which we split and I found to be quite delightful. Servers were very polite and unintrusive. Really enjoyed the whole experience, very relaxing and laid back.  My only complaint is that the order counter was a tight fit as it is a small place inside. Highly recommend.

All I can review from this place on a 'tasted it' level is the americano and coffee~ delish! The Atmosphere there is a nice outdoor patio, so if you are there for a early saturday or sunday morning coffee the weather is cool and perfect for coffee :)

But next time I stop by I will certainly be trying one of there delicious looking pastries, my only problem would be not knowing which to pick, from the buttery and flaky looking chocolate croissant~  to the yummy fresh looking fruit and yogurt.. this place is a great little spot!!!!!

    Oh my word.

Excuse the sundried tomato spread on my face but I RUSHED back here to tell y'all about this place.  Yes, it's THAT good.

Whew!  Let me catch my breath.

    OK.

First, I'm drawn to local coffee shops the way a moth is drawn to an electric bug-zapper.  Once its in my sights I MUST enter.  I'm pulled inside by a force that is stronger than my own free will (a force that may well lead to my eventual caffiene-addled demise).  Anyway, Brickyard was absolutely, completely, 110% worth the stop.

If nothing else, the expansive patio out back forever endears this place to my heart.  Mismatched tables and chairs, umbrellas, and a large shady tree - all the elements of a classic, local joint.  I picked a table and just sat - no reading materials, no dining companions - just me and the glorious patio.

Food was delivered to my table quite quickly.  Of several sandwich, panini, and salad options (many vegetarian friendly!) I'd gone with the Veggie Panini - cucumbers, onions, lettuce, and sundried tomato spread on wheat bread.  Delicious and light, healthy without feeling compromised.  It came with a large side salad (my choice of ceasar, mixed greens, or potato salad) but the sandwich left me so full I just plucked out the gorgeous, ripe cherry tomatoes and abandonded the rest.

If I lived in San Diego I'd be here every single day - with a book, a friend, or just myself for company.

I was so excited to try this cute little spot, as I love breakfast places and coffeehouses.   I also saw they serve chocolate and almond croissants here, so it gave me more reason to check it out.   I was actually really disappointed about their breakfast choices...I figured they would have at least omelettes and French Toast options, but they only had a few breakfast paninis and a breakfast burrito.    I was also disappointed in their croissants--not only was it not flaky, it was also a bit stale and crusty.  BOO!   The atmosphere is very cute, with a live musician in the morning and the vibe of the place is definitely part of the good review.  But in terms of food, it's just okay.

    The neighbor from hell.

(4 visits) I've been nearby for about four years, and I've dropped in from time to time. The food is overpriced and below-par; I'm not a coffee drinker so I can't comment on that. Even if I just want a quick sandwich, I think it's worth walking half a mile for something better - The Cheese Shop, Richard Walker's, The Broken Yolk, Mary Jane's, etc. (and that was before the complaint below kicked in).

But what really bugs me about this place is the saxophonist that plays on weekends. Every freaking Saturday and Sunday morning we (and the everyone else within a block or two) are forced to listen to this idiot blow seemingly random notes for several hours. I have a fairly broad taste in music - Mozart to MSTRKRFT, etc., but this is just noise. I've got several ideas regarding improving the sound of that saxophone, most of which involve the player's ass. Brickyard Coffee & Tea is like the annoying neighbor who plays the TV too loud and gives their uncoordinated kid a drum set. A bunch of inconsiderate jerks.

As a San Diego non-resident, prior to finding this place, I was wandering the streets of downtown when I overheard a passing family mention someplace called "Brickyard". As I continued down the street a few more blocks waiting for my hangover from the night before to pass, I stumbled upon it. Unfortunately it was just after 2 pm, and this place was closed for the day.

Returning the next day [Sunday] around 11 am, I wandered in, stood in line, and ordered a Bagel Melt on an onion bagel w/ turkey and Jack cheese and a small Americano. Thankful for some awesome weather that day, I was able to secure a spot outside on the back patio while I waited for my meal. About 15 minutes elapsed before one of the servers brought me this enormous Bagel Melt with generous breakfast portions of turkey and Jack cheese, which was wonderful, albeit a bit overboard on the cheese side. Other patrons were outside sitting and eating, reading the paper, taking a break from their morning bike ride, and otherwise enjoying a lazy morning.

Having a distinct, local neighborhood flair, I loved the look and feel of this somewhat tucked away place and highly look forward to returning.

I'm still a fan but was sad to discover shocking news.

Their tasty breakfast burritos are pre-made!

PRE MADE!  ***gasp***  Gawd, say it isn't so.

I discovered this when I stopped in Monday morning for breakfast and morning sun on the patio.  Think that stopped me from coming in at 6am on Tuesday for a burrito and coffee to take on the plane ride home?

    Hell no.

Next time I'm going to try a muffin.  At least those look home made.  I hope.
