Oh, wow.  I thought it was the best pizza I've ever had in my life because I had had a few drinks and it was two in the morning.

But my second visit the next day confirmed what I believed.  That large, expensive cheese pizza puts all others to shame.  It was so damn good, I got a third one to go.  Back home to DC!

When I lived on 34th Street four years ago, I proudly remember opening my Zagat book (nerdy, I know) and pointing to Pizza 33 listed under the "Top Pizza" section. Pizza 33 was all the rage back in 2005.

It was the place we'd all go for drunken slices back in Murray Hill. I have fond memories of getting into a fight with my boyfriend at the time and then both of us leaving the apartment only to meet up at Pizza 33 for some emotional eating.

Sad but true.

I had puked up wine all over that pizza place on 33rd and 3rd (disgusting, I know) and still was welcomed with open arms the next day. They knew how to run a business. And like any good business comes expansion.

Enter Pizza 33, Chelsea edition. Exactly the same as the 33rd location only not receiving as much love. I think it's because the West side of the city is just snobbier than the East side in general. Get over yourselves, Westies.

Pizza 33 is glorious. The slices are thin and delicious. The sauce is exactly the way you'd want it, and the crust is brick oven magic.

Mark my words: the margherita slice is exactly what you need when you are drunk and if you are two steps away from alcohol poisoning, you'll probably need the ziti slice too.

My go-to spot for a slice if I'm around.

My pizza was overcooked, too hot, and too pricey. It was thin crust (not my fav) and nothing special.

If you're looking for a slice in this neighborhood (if there are any pizza joints left in 'hood... they've probably all been turned into Thai restaurants by this point!)... don't go here. Not worth it.

I like Brick Oven Pizza. It doesn't blow me away, but comparitively speaking, it's a pretty good slice.

On the thinner side and a little flaky. I'm generally not a huge fan of "flaky," but here it's not so bad. Also a little doughey, but again, a decent slice for sure. Service is fast and friendly.

Not too many places to sit, though, (and it's usually pretty crowded) so you'll have to scope out your table beforehand if you plan on staying.

I have no qualms about returning when I'm in the area, but wouldn't make a special trip.

I stopped in here after the Brothers Quay lecture at SVA theatre last night.

The crust is substantial -- thick enough through the bottom that you can pick up your slice without it falling apart, and the edges are chewy and crusty. But little flavor. Symptomatic of highly processed flours. You might get a good baking result, but there's no flavor left.

I had a mushroom/chicken slice. The mushrooms looked fresh in the display case, and each slice certainly had a generous portion. When they reheat a slice, though, the mushrooms get all dry and shrivel up. The flavor was good on the mushrooms that didn't get overdone in the oven, so I'd give this place a second chance. I suspect that customers getting a freshly made whole pie are getting a product worlds above the re-baked slices.

not great, not horrible. The pizza had probably been sitting out a bit longer than it should have been. I opted for the only thick crust pie, and perhaps that was a mistake. could have been cooked a bit longer. I might go there again, but I'd opt for thin.

I liked the pizza at this Chelsea location. It did not bowl me over with New York fabulosity. The sauce and cheese were tasty, the temperature bubbly hot, but the crust never firmed up in the middle, and I was experience a sloppy, droopy mess. And that is not how I want to roll while in Chelsea... I like my pizza like I like my men... compliments of the theatre.

If I go back, I may ask for an extra crispy finish on the crust. It would be worth it because the prices are good. Two slices and a diet coke comes to $6.50.

I am happy to be back downtown and able to once again order my favorite pizza. This pizza is so good I actually like the plain margherita as it doesn't need any additions to be delicious!
I agree with Jane K that pizza 33 can a miss- I have never eaten it in the shop, but my old roommate and I sometimes felt that it was slightly undercooked. That being said- it is an easy fix if you just throw it on the stove or in the oven for a minute .
It is important to note however, that even though I now live a block from the Pizza 33 on 14th street- it is not as good as this location (the crust tastes different- I think it is as a result of not enough salt) so I recommend ordering from this one if they are willing to deliver.
Great for a Sunday night at home...in fact, I might just order some now!

Hi, it's 11 degrees out.  All I can say is, DELIVERY.

Yup, I'm the resident cruise director of my small office and after a co-worker suggested Brick Oven 33, I ordered three large pies for our Friday bread breaking and brainstorm pizza party lunch extravaganza.  Brilliant!

One cheese, one sausage and one pepperoni and everyone glutenously happy.  Normally the pepperoni disappears first, but the sausage was the surprise hit.  As one person put it as he finished his second slice, good sauce to cheese to crust ratio.  Some crusts (Flamilia, secretly owned by Sabarro) are too bready.  Not this place.  Nice and thin and heaped with goodness.

Go on and make yourself popular; order a pizza.

While waiting in line at UCB, my out of town guest and I started to get hungry.  I ventured out in the rain to find us some decent NY slices to munch on.  Place #1 was called Luigi's - me and another guy walked in at the same time, both glanced at the been-out-all-day-grody which lay before us and peaced out.  Onto the next stop 3 blocks away happened to be Pizza 33.  The slices didn't look much better here either but there was a little line, that's promising right?  If other people line up it must be alright.  I ordered a plain, a pepperoni, and a chicken something slice.  The guy heated up the slices, put them in a box and sent me on my merry way through the rain back to the UCB line (which had gotten much longer - good thing we didn't both go.)  Eating in line, holding an umbrella, pizza, box, coke, and eating is tricky - it's even trickier when your pizza is luke warm and kinda gross.  The plain and pepperoni slices were ok, but that chicken deal was straight up no-thanks-nast.  We might have been better off with place #1.  At least the coke was cold, and the show was hilarious.

Everytime I go there, its buzzing.  All you hear are the orders and the crancking and cha chang -- ing of the register.  My favorites are the margarita slices, but really anything there is great.
Its usually open til late on the weekends, a great way to start the sobering up process after a night of some serious debachery, LOL.
I get a pie with my crew and just have breakfast pizza on the go.

Let your grandfather tell you a story.

Sometimes, in Manhattan, that great mecca built on the backs and by the hands of our tireless ancestors, those dime-a-dozen, cramped, unconvincing, inauthentic, poorly decorated pizza places are actually better than the well-known, overpriced and overhyped dime-a-dozen, cramped, unconvincing, inauthentic, poorly decorated pizza places.

One of the best (and kinda not cheap) margherita slices I've had. Open past your bedtime (but not mine).

Best pizza slice ever.
Really, no joke.
In the middle of Chelsea.
Crispy! but oh so exquisitely tender.
Kate never thought she'd be so enamored of a simple slice.

Open real late, they use
Very fresh ingredients.
Even their sauce is distinctive.
Not too sweet, not too thick, not too chunky.

Pizza costs $2 and up, but is
In a totally different league.
Zoinks! They have other great looking basic stuff too.
Zealous food lovers rejoice!
Although seriously, go for the pizza. It was awesome.

3 out of 20 people might care about limited seating, but
3 out of 20 people should chill out and just enjoy their slice.

Starved and scarred from a horrid Greyhound ride hours before, I stumbled into Pizza 33 looking for something cheap, fast, vegetarian, and delicious.

I was not disappointed.

Yea, so I only had a slice of cheese and a root beer. From that slice of heaven I was able to deduct that the pizza here has has probably the best crust ever (better than the smooshy crust I eat in Boston anyway). The cheese and sauce were delicious too.

Oh, Pizza 33, if I lived near you, I would be the size of a house.

Went here last night - steaming and hot outside, not much better inside.  The front is completely open and there is no air conditioning.  The pizza at Pizza 33 is always good - crisp, good sauce, and real cheese.  After eating two slices and finishing off a Coke, while enduring the counter guy scream NEXT over and over again, ordered another slice and asked for tap water.  The response, "We don't have any water."  Really!!!  Does that mean hands are not washed according to the Health Department's mandate?  Another customer asked for water for her dog that was sitting on the sidewalk.  She was also told there was no water.  Not nice!  Not neighborly!  Not humane!

One of the few places in NYC to get great pizza. His thin crust pizza is top notch!

My friend Bernardo hooks it up at all hours of the night!

For extra entertainment, go there sober and watch how he keeps the peace with all the drunks.

Enjoy!

I ordered a chicken slice of pizza... but it had onions hidden on it, and the mixture did not sit well with my taste buds.  I wound up peeling all the toppings off for the second half of the slice.
Also, the guy working the cash register was semi-nasty.  Really small place, not comfortable enough to sit and eat. Good prices for ny.

While being better than Hot Spot pizza is not a difficult feat, it means a lot when you don't want to travel more than 3 blocks for a slice. And Brick Oven does offer up crispy, hot thin-crust whenever I'm itching for a cheesy delight. It can be hit or miss depending on when you go and I think last night might have been a miss. The pizza might have been sitting out a leeettle bit too long...I really hate when the mozzerella turns that weird oily brown. Either way, we demolished it. Good option if your starved and in a hurry.

This is your better-than-average corner pizza place. They offer the rare BRICK OVEN slice. Yes, you read that correctly: BRICK OVEN slice.

There are usually several other topping options available in the hidden under-counter area so don't think what you see is all they have. They have regular cheese pies hiding there if you don't want the pricier fresh mozzarella version- just ask.

The staff can be a little prickly but for the few minutes you're there, it's well worth it.

NB: This location is far tastier than the other Pizza 33 on 23rd Street between 6th & 7th Aves.

LET me preface by saying that I do not give out 1 stars lightly. You really have to do something awful to get 1 star... if i could, I'd give this place 0 stars.

I ordered pizza from them last night, their special 33 pizza with the arugula, tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto, and it came in a reasonable amount of time.

Then I started eating the pizza. And then I felt the crunching noise of sand, kind of like when you're eating an oyster that hasn't been cleaned out well enough. Except it was on the pizza. I thought it was weird but then I moved on to the next slice.

Okay, next slice, now it tasted like I was eating dirt. I looked at what I was eating and it was actually dirt. I was chewing on rocks or something. I spit out the pizza and called the restaurant to get my money back, cuz there was NO WAY I was going to try eating another piece.

So I call the restaurant, and this is how our conversation went:

Me: Hi, I just ordered from your restaurant and it feels like I'm chewing dirt every time I bite the pizza. So I would like my money back, because the pizza is unedible.
Manager (whose name is Bernard): What kind of pizza did you get?
Me: The special 33 one.. with the tomatoes and prosciutto...
Bernard: Oh okay. Let me try to find your order.
Me: Umm any idea why I was chewing on dirt?
Bernard: The arugula probably hadn't been cleaned.
Me: That's gross. (I look down at the pizza and sure enough there is dirt CAKED on the arugula)
Bernard (in a defensive tone): Now look, I have guys working upstairs and downstairs making pizza, this place is big and I don't have time to be monitoring everything that they're doing. There's just no way I can be everywhere at once making sure that they're cleaning vegetables. And a lot of the guys working here are new, we have new people coming in everyday, and they don't really know what they're doing yet.
Me: Yea I understand you can't monitor everything but... look, I just want my money back.
Bernard: Did you order this through seamless?
Me: Yea
Bernard: Oh okay, well it's in the computer, so I can't give you a refund since it's already in the system. But I'm going to be here every night after 6 pm, and my name is Bernard, so just call me and I'll send you a free pizza.
Me: Oooookay.

So, I think that conversation says it all. He was totally rude and unapologetic about there being DIRT in the pizza. And why did he think I would want a free pizza from them if the one I just ordered was complete crap? I'm pret-ty sure it's not that difficult to refund things on seamless.

Hell no am I going to order from this place again, even if it is a "free" pizza (that they'd probably spit on). I'd rather let my money go to waste and give this place a 1 star review on yelp so hopefully you don't make the same mistake of ordering from this place like I did.

Ooooo. This is a really tasty slice. I got pepperoni, which is my standard for investigating a new pizza joint. First of all, the slice is HUGE, which is how a slice should be (but too often isn't). It's puddled with oil, also a good sign. The gooey melted cheese is truly delicious, and there's plenty of tasty pepperoni. The crust was thin-ish but not super-thin -- just right for this Goldilocks. It was crispy, but not crunchy and not charred.

I can't speak to the margherita slice, which admittedly did not look as tasty as the pepperoni. They also have a serious veggie slice that looked pretty good.

At $3.25, it's a pricey slicey, but at least you get to watch them ring it up on the ancient mechanical cash register.

Ok, ok, I just LOVE the pizza here. I've ordered slices all over Chelsea, as I studied at FIT for a few years, but this place is really the best....the pizza is thin and soft yet crispy....in the summer, the front opens up, and I SWEAR it smells like the boardwalk in New Jersey....makes me crave a slice on the beach...I love to get a slice of cheese and also a slice of margarita, as both have very different flavors, but cater to my desire for a low-maintenance slice...the other ones covered in meat and ricotta scare me....The one downside is that drinks are overpriced....bottled water is something like $2-2.75 per small bottle, as are fountain and bottled sodas.....

Stopped by for a drunken slice last night.  The guy behind the counter saw me eying an attractive fresh mozzarella slice with dollops of tomato sauce.

After he went into a whole schpiel about this being "the only place you can get such a slice...yadda yadda yadda...", I surrendered.  (guess he was doing a riff on the 'You've tried the rest..now try the best" pizza box classic.  this braggadaccio might be the only thing pizza chefs and rappers have in common...all you sucka pisanos!)

The slice was quite good.  I would've preferred a more equal cheese-tomato ratio but the cheese was good and the crust was thin and crispy.  The pizza was a lot easier to swallow than the $3.25 price tag...

Hole in the wall unremarkable and scruffy pizza place with a few chairs and tables opening out onto the street which makes for good people watching while tucking into the best slice I've found in Manhattan yet. I was surprised to find the near perfect thin crust in a place like this. Just the right amount of crispness and the perfect melange of cheese and sauce giving it a great texture. Pizza slices in the cabinet looked kinda limp so I ordered a personal pizza which came freshly cooked and piping hot with just the right amount of grease oozing from the peppy pepperoni. If only the sauce had a little more zing (touch of chili and garlic maybe) this would have been five stars. But, I'm being picky, this is good pizza, go and eat it!

I have passed by here so many times that I finally had to try it the other night. I ordered two margarita slices ($6.50). The service was not friendly at all, and while I thought the guy was having a bad day, it appears from other reviews that that's the trend. Anyways, the slices were very good - fresh, tasty, but not very filling for their price tag.
