I don't like to just throw around 5 star ratings but I've never been to Brewvies and not had a good time.
Everybody already said it Beer+Food+Movie-Children=Awesome.
-Being that you'll be drinking it's best to see comedies here.
-Don't be angry when people talk during the movie (again, beer+movie). If that bothers you see the movie in a real theater first.
-Messy food is hard to eat in the dark, avoid it or wear clothes that you expect to have buffalo wing sauce all over at the end.
-The food is good, get some before or after.
The theater also does specials based of news in the world of entertainment. When George Carlin died the theater had free late night screenings of his standup, etc. Check the site often for updates.
There's supposed to be a place like this in Chicago. It's called Brew-n-View. Compared to Breviews, it's crap (has terrible projection quality, one screen, mostly macro beers, and no real food).
Wonderful and bizarre that Utahns should perfect this concept, but Breviews is it.
Breviews has two screens, with good acoustics, playing films on actual film. In other words, it's a competent theater in the first place--probably cleaner than most you've been to, in spite of the bar counters in front of each row of seats. It tends to play second-run movies, but the owners seem to have a good eye toward what would play well in this format.
The selection of beer is good--they are very broad-minded about the local breweries and have some of the best from all of them (with the conspicuous exception of Utah Brewers Co-op). I don't even know where I could get Rooster's Chocolate Stout outside of Layton--that's a tasty beer.
In addition to beer and movies, they have food, which can be delivered in-theater when your number is shown. It's so-so. Pub food, but still a welcome improvement over popcorn and Mike & Ikes.
And of course, they have an entire pub, pool tables, and and outdoor patio, which is itself a rare thing in Utah.
Suburb execution of the pub theater concept. Recommended.
Brewvies is a fun place to grab a beer and see a movie. However, the food is on the bland side. I certainly wouldn't come here just to have dinner.
I've been here hundres of times, literally. The have among the best prices for pints, great feel/atmosphere, food is decent overall with vegetarian options, and movies are dirt cheap (though, to be fair, they're often in the dollar theatre anyway).
I wish they had more space and seating because it can get crowded.
I definitely miss this place, and am in search of a quality replacement of it. Sure there are other places that you can drink beer and THEN watch a movie, but here you get to do both at the same time. (only problem is half way through you have to pee... really badly... depending on how much you drink... )
I've yet to find anything that can equal or top it. But I'm still lookin...
Just another reason why I love Salt Lake City. Two of my favorite things in one place: movies and food. Loved the experience, start to finish. Great pizza, and the pitcher of beer was cold and tasty! Nachos looked really good, too. Movie prices were reasonable, too. Located in a little "edgy" strip-mall, this little jewel is worth the price of admission. I'm sure my son, Michael, knows of this place as he went to high school in SLC! No one under 18 allowed!
Cheap movies + good beer + real food - children = heaven
This is such a brilliant concept, it should be in every city.
Ok, I'm going to start this with a HUGE negative. This incredible bar does NOT belong in SLC. Or Utah. It belongs in San Jose, where the majority of the population would actually appreciate what they have, rather than shun it (but the minority that goes there knows how good they have it).
What a simply brilliant concept. Take a bar, throw in a pool table and other activities. Add in a restaurant...and the finale? Let's add a movie theater playing movies that Utahns really hate...AND set up the seats with trays so that you can eat your dinner AND drink your beer while watching said movie?
Brilliant.....
Any place that has admission for a movie (for $6), and where you can bring in a large beer is a winner for me. I didn't get any food, but it looked really good from my surroundings. There is a board that lights up in the theater when your food is ready. That seemed pretty convenient, though I would not like to miss any of the movie to go get my food. I guess it would be smarter just to get your food beforehand. I really liked the built-in tables in the rows to put your food and drinks. Also, if you get there early and need something to do, the pool tables are free to use. I really recommend this place. It was a pretty busy and looks like quite the place to be.
This is a great place to catch a movie and a beer. They don't typically have movies on their opening weekend, but they aren't as far behind as the dollar theater, either. Some really excellent beers on tap and with the different specialty nights they have, there are great drink specials all the time.
In the theaters themselves are some couches in the back and in the theater seats are small bars to set your drinks on. It's a great concept that works really well.
I haven't had any of the food at Brewvies, but I understand it's good bar fare.
Why doesn't every city have a Brewvies?
Yeah, it is that great. Who doesn't want to drink a huge beer (they serve steins), eat pizza and watch a movie all at the same time? They play fun music at the bar and there are also pool tables in the bar area.
I wouldn't give a 5 star rating on the food but its okay if you want to grab something quick or eat in the dark. The pizza and wings were definitely nothing special. Next time I'll try something else from the menu and let you know.
Love this concept!
Ahhhh Brewvies! Such a wonderful place. When I moved here in 1998 it was an oasis in the desert. I had never seen such a place where you could drink a beer, eat nachos and watch a movie on the big screen. I love Brewvies.
Nothing is better than taking a weekday off to do some yard work and then topping that day off with a late lunch and movie with a beer. Who cares what the movie is?
Movies.
Beer.
Food.
What more could you want?
And you get all three at the same time.
That's right you get to bring your beer and food into the theater.
I have always taken Brewvies for granted, but it wasn't until I moved out of Utah that I realized what a novel concept the pub/movie theater is! I couldn't find another one like it in any of the towns I looked into moving to.
What's so great about Brewvies? Well, obviously the fact that you can eat and drink beer is reason enough to go there. But so far no one has mentioned the very reasonably priced tickets! There is a Wednesday special with $2 tickets all day. Also, they have drink specials posted on the website, so check those out.
And don't forget - this is a real bar in addition to a movie theater. There are pool tables and everything, so don't be afraid to catch the early show and hang out in the lounge afterwards.
TIPS: the ticket stand up front only takes cash, but you can buy your tickets with a credit card up at the bar; you must be 21; before you order anything, consider how you plan to eat it in the dark.
(1/08) P.S. The pizza oven is back in business!!
I luv brewvies. If you missed a movie, or you can wait for first-run movies to become "2nd run", then you can go to brewvies and watch them with friends and consume great bar food (and beer if u like). Free wi-fi, cheap pool, food specials, cheap tickets and sometimes free movies on certain nights, its great for a fun night out. My friend and i like to sink back into the big comfy recliners at the back. At brewvies you get to experience the challenge of eating a melty, monster plate of nachos in the dark, no easy trick. The burgers are not bad, but i hear the pizza is better, but sadly, they are without pizza now. Be sure to call the brewvies number to hear the dude review the movies for you - classic. Don't forget your ID, they card everyone.
Great place to watch a movie and have chow at the same time. The food is on the unhealthy side, but it's tasty. The movies tend to be a little older. But overall a great time to be had here.
I would give this 5 stars because it was so much fun, but I don't want to mislead anyone into thinking the pizza is *that* good. Where else can you watch a movie while waiting for your number to appear on the movie screen to alert you that your pizza is ready for you? (They have other food options, too). They serve beer, but no one seemed to get drunk or obnoxious, the seating is comfortable, and the table trays make everything easy and cosy. They usually show pretty good movies, too.
