Fantastic food. Huge Menu. Everything from customizing your own salad, to Matzo ball soup, to a Corned Beef Sandwich to breakfast all day.
Did I mention the food is fantastic? -
Review from Brian S.
I'm not a big fan of Brent's, but we had breakfast at this location and it was fairly decent. First time for us at the Westlake restaurant. It is big and fancy and very clean.
As seems to happen in many restaurants the greeting was a bit odd. At mid-morn we were the only ones entering and the girl looked at us without speaking, then asked "how many". There were two of us... and it should have been obvious. Oh well, this seems to happen a lot. We were promptly seated but she took us on a shortcut through the office. Yes, they have an office located as an island in the middle of the dining room. Odd, but whatev.
Bus boy was great. Waitresses) were great -- two since one went on break leaving us in anothers capable hands. Food was cooked in reasonable time and was what we ordered. Omolettes, hashed browns, toast/bagel. Everything seemed under-seasoned... maybe even totally unseasoned. It definitely could have been better.
The clientele at that time seems like the "Old Westlake crowd" - a number of older couples with time on their hands to eat and talk loud. And talk loud they did but mostly because the sound system is turned up REALLY LOUD. As is the phone in the office-island.
All-in-all, an OK experience but not great. -

I've been going to Brent's deli since they got that location in Westlake from Red's Barbecue years ago. Whether I'm in the mood for a good old fashioned pastrami and rye or craving breakfast(and the hash browns of course), they satisfy me every time. They've had a good amount of the same waitresses for a while now as well, and they know how to serve their customers.
My abbbbbsolute favorite dish to spoil myself with is a Belgium waffle with strawberries and whipped cream. Ay Dios Mio! So good.
I'll be coming here forever.Listed in: Where I get my Potato…

I couldn't that such a great deli with great pastrami and corned beef serves you pickles that look like they were sitting on the counter all day, it even looks like leftovers. This has happened more than once. I always take out and haven't had a chance to bring it to their attention.

Brent's Deli is a great family friendly restaurant. It is a very classic deli with all the deli treats. It has a big menu and good portions of food.
I give it a thumbs up! -
Review from Mike M.
Now this is a great deli....
Plenty of free parking, big place with lots of tables, inside and out .....and a patio. All of the traditional awesomeness on the menu. Two kinds of pickles to snack on, too.
After my wife made 9 corned beefs for St. Patty's Day, I had no desire for a corned beef sandwich. I opted for a turkey, bacon, avocado club. It was perfection.
Everyone had a great meal at this top of the line Jewish deli. -

I do not get the stellar reviews. My hard salami sandwich was a stack of salami on bread with a toothpick. If your a minimalist I guess its good. This area needs a decent Italian deli like Lucca Ravioli in SF.

Review from Brian B.
Did not like the food as much as Jerry's Deli.
I had the Monte Cristo sandwich, it seemed like the portions were off. It had a lot of bread so it was far more filling than Jerry's, but there was noticeably less meat. I didn't think it was a fair trade off in value. It was so filling in fact that I could not even finish it.
The sandwich also came with strawberry jelly rather than compote.
Lastly, the price was higher than Jerrys. -

Pros: Good food. Decent portions. Larger selection than Jerry's or Pickles.
Cons: Not as flavorful as I'd expect. Just as expensive as Jerry's. -

I followed the suggestion on the Black Pastrami Ruben on double baked rye. I suggest you do the same. I don't exaggerate when I say I have never had a more beautifully braised pastrami. It was the most perfect combination of pastrami flavor, juicy, fatty thinly sliced meat topped with luscious buttery earthy Swiss cheese and cut with the acid of their crunchy, slightly tangy aged sauerkraut accompanied now and then by the nutty rye highlights. I had latke with mine(yes you should too!) instead of potatoes.
My partner had the San Fransisco Burger-dare I say, "Brent's makes an amazing burger!" Try it too.
They also bring their own pickles to the table when you sit down which I ended up buying more of to take home.
We would have died if we had eaten anything more, but I haven't even mentioned the pastry counter. We took home some cookies, and everything looked top notch -another time I'm afraid, but I am already looking forward to it. -

I don't understand all of the great reviews for this place.
Brent's as a whole, is delicious -- this location, not so much. If you really want to experience their food, then you must visit the one in Northridge. The one here in Westlake is a cheap substitute.
I was staying in the area a few months ago, and my friends and I needed a breakfast spot. I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs, while others ordered the belgian waffle, bacon and eggs and french toast. My corned beef hash was mushy and greasy, exhibiting non of the crunchy bits that make the dish so tasty.
For the most part, I probably won't be visiting this location anytime soon. For my Brent's fix, I'll stick to the valley.
2-stars: Meh. I've experienced better. -

I just don't get what people think is so great about this restaurant. The service is good, but the food....not so much. I ate here a couple of years ago and at that time decided that it was not worth returning. The other day, in a moment of weakness (translate: extreme hunger), I decided to give it another try. I had the Monte Cristo Sandwich, and it was just awful. It was dry and unattractive looking, there was hardly any cheese in it. The sandwich was not properly encased in batter, so all the different layers had been exposed to the deep-fryer's oil and all the outside edges of the meat and bread were hard and chewy. I couldn't finish it all because it was so dry, I felt like I was eating cardboard. All that for around $12 or 13, if I remember correctly. I have eaten better food at Denny's! So, yeah, don't go there!
People also rave about their eclairs (at a whopping $7.50!). They are huge, but if you have ever had a French eclair, you will call the authorities when they serve you this monstrosity. It's just this huge chocolate covered "thing" , basically dough covered in cheap chocolate and filled with tasteless pastry cream.
Sorry, I have nothing good to say about the food here! -

Got some meat platters for an office party!
The food was EXCELLENT, but the SERVICE was absolutely AMAZING. So friendly, accommodating.
The platters were beautifully wrapped, the the meat and cheeses were top-notch.
All in all, just a GREAT experience!! -

Delicious, but no need to get the extra lean, it was actually too lean somehow which I have never experienced in a corned beef sandwich. I would just get the regular next time. Coming back here for sure. Got some goodies from the desert case to take home. Mini hamentashem and linzor tarts, hubby loved the giant lemon bar. Want to try the black reuben next time. Great service.

Great breakfast on the weekends. Mimosas and bloody Marys are my favorite breakfast drinks :) The place was really busy but there was enough servers and bartenders to make the experience enjoyable. I really enjoyed the omelet that I had. The bartender gave us excellent service and I will definitely be back when I come down to visit my family again.

I had the smoked cod plate for $16. Awesome flavor, and there was enough fish for two. Sides were great as well. The bagel was good, but nothing special. Long wait for service, and then for food as well.

This place is attached to the Westlake Hyatt, so before you go, you know it's probably a nicer place. Walking in, though, it feels much like a large deli/breakfast place: a large lobby, low booths and tables, and virtually no walls, allowing clear lines of sight all the way across the restaurant. As for the food, I have only one word: delicious. Though I have been here only a few times, I have never left disappointed- or hungry. Portion sizes are pretty large, but the prices are no higher than other restaurants in the area. They serve breakfast all day, so for all you egg and potato fans out there, this is definitely a great, consistent option. Servers are quite busy, but attentive. I will absolutely be back here!

Review from Sunny R.
Just OK. I had high expectations but Brent's didn't pan out for me.
It was pretty crowded even though we went on an off time in the afternoon. So we decided to sit in the bar area to order lunch. Which had room, but service was slow.
They do have unusual bottled soda like Cream Soda. They also give you free pickles to munch on if you ask for them.
I asked what soups they had without meat and the waitress said, "Chicken Noodle Soup." Uh, when did chicken become a non-meat?
Over all, probably not some place I'll go back to. The food was just OK. The potato salad came in a tiny paper cup... The whole experience just wasn't that great. -
Review from Joseph E.
North Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA
I eat here two to three times per week since I work very nearby. I can tell you that I have yet to find one bad thing on the menu. The pastrami is second only to a place in Pasadena, the burgers are great, the salads are HUGE. And they are great about substitutions and changes. Example, I once had a pastrami burger (yes, that would be a burger with a pile of pastrami on it) onto which I had them add an over-easy egg. Sooooooo good.
The Tuna Split salad is massive and so good. Its a pile of greens and veggies that fills a bowl about the size of your head and it comes topped with a generous mound of tuna salad AND a second, equally large, scoop of egg salad! Great combo.
The regular fries are okay, but the sweet potato fries are divine. And I'm usually NOT a sweet potato fry person, I usually prefer the reguar. Not here. Trust me. -

Sherman Oaks, CA
This location of Brent's has always been virtually perfect in execution. The service has been prompt and anticipatory. The food quality is outstanding. I judge a deli by its traditional foods. They have both potato and meat knishes, as well as great chicken soup. The knishes are beautiful to look at, and the texture is great. Breakfast is heaven, with stellar bacon: thick, substantial, super flavorful.
They have a whole page on their menu for "lite" items. Instead of the same old tired lite items, they get delightfully inventive, with items like the Firemans Breakfast, with egg whites, turkey, spinach, and avocado stir fried together. FIX THIS
The desserts are very nicely made, stunningly so in fact.
I have NEVER had a bad meal here. -

Westlake Village, CA
Wow, I guess I'm obsessive about this place! Wife and I went back, ate in the bar as usual and was pleasantly surprised to see that the prices of the sandwiches had been rolled back...not all the way back, but $3-4 back from their obnoxious high of $17.00. So, good news as I see it.
Why not back to 5-stars for me? The portions have gotten smaller. Yes, understandably and better than trying to get $17.00 for a sandwich. The kitchen is still a problem. I can't count how many times our food comes out wrong from the kitchen. And as we watch, so does everybody else's food. Potatoes instead of tomatoes, well done not rare, items missing... kind of a circus back there. They finally do get things right and the food is good. But, there's often times too much participation required just to get your meal.
Sorry guys, it just isn't like "the good old days" of Brent's. I really wish I could say it was.
BUT, and this is of great importance, it's FAR better than Nate N Al's at the Lakes. So, given the choice, come here for sure!2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Camarillo, CA
Brents oh Brents. This place is about as good as it gets when it comes to a delicatessen on the west coast. Although I can't speak for anything other than the corned beef hash, French dip sammich and the black pastrami rueben. Those three are the cornerstone of my orders. When me and my girl just cannot decide for the life of me where to go, this is the decider. I cannot refuse the idea of Brents.
Now onto the sammiches: The bread is wonderful and the pastrami is flavorful and not too salty like some places. They give you the option of getting it extra lean but trust me, the flavor is in the fat. The seasoned curly fries are worth the digression and you can opt for potato salad instead of the 'slaw.
Service is always friendly and quick despite the fact that this place is a zoo almost everytime I've come here.
I do have one gripe though: the last time the wifey and I came here, the sandwiches were not the usual gargantuan size. I certainly hope that Brent's hasn't succumbed to the lousy economy by trimming down on the portions, especially since the premium you pay on such delicious sandwiches was subsidized before by the fact that you can almost always count on leftovers for a tasty treat later that day.
Regardless, Brent's still sits waaaaay high on my list of favorite places to grub. -

Since my office shares the same parking lot, I end up here a lot for breakfast and lunch meetings. Brent's is well run and consistently good. Yes, I've had a few disappoints over the years, but nobody's perfect and even mom messes up a meal every once in a while. My current favorite is the beef brisket tacos!

Simi Valley, CA
This place does not live up to the institution that is Brent's in the valley. The portions are smaller and I know its the same Brent's, but it doesn't taste the same. That could be me, because I would hope that they should be identical in form and fashion, but I am not impressed. I feel Brent's has the best Pastrami in Southern California. Their split pea soup, which is made with beef not ham stock, is the best around. I love Brent's and was so happy to find out I didn't have to fight the heat to get my Pastrami, but the T.O. location falls short.
I want to love this place, but back to the heat I go! -
Review from Julie N.
I was in town for work (surprise) and this was my first time to the area. One of my friends drove up from Santa Monica and we met up for dinner here. We weren't too picky, and didn't have high hopes- just needed a place to grab some grub and catch up.
Your basic neighborhood diner- and, in true OCD fashion--I appreciated that it was clean. Service was great- prompt, and they even tried to give us more food--a plate of pickles? LOL
The most noticeable thing about this place is the generous (understatement) portions of food. Holy cow- I could have fed myself and every Kardashian with the amount of food they gave! Taste was pretty okay--not the best I've had, though this place deserves 4 stars for the service and portions.
I also appreciated that they let us linger quite a bit longer after our meal was finished so we could catch up again (and it helped that I tip well LOL).
Close to the freeway, the hotel, Gelson's....whatever. It serves its purpose. -
Review from scott j.
San Diego, CA
This review should really be 4 1/2 stars: 5 stars for the food, 4 stars for the service, and 4 stars for the pastry availability in the pastry case.
Growing up in LA I got turned onto Brent's early and am so happy with the Westlake location. It doesn't have all the same charm as the Northridge location, but it's bigger and the wait is always minimal. Every time I come back to LA to visit I simply must have my Brent's.
THE FOOD
Absolutely the BEST deli food in LA. The pastrami is always tender and delicious, the cole slaw tart and tangy, this is simply the best pastrami in all of Southern California. The lox and bagels are delicious, and pretty much everything that I've had from them is amazing. I always love taking some hamantaschens home with me to San Diego, however they never have enough no matter what time I go there. They always seem to be out of the Cherry hamantaschen which is my husband's favorite, but I personally love all the other flavors.
SERVICE
Inconsistent. It vacillates between good and great - though the servers always seem to be a bit "busy".
I will continue to go back here every time I visit, I can't get enough of Brent's!!! -
Review from Cynthia M.
Ventura County, CA
Not impressed. Second time to visit this place, first time was about five years ago-now I realize why its been awhile. We went to Brent's with a party of eight. Female server got 3 out of the 8 orders wrong. One of which was supposed to be a scramble came out as an omelette and when returned to the kitchen it was evident that a knife chopped through the omelette and served that way as a scramble. Two asked for Hollandaise sauce on the side for their Eggs Benedict and got it on top instead. Another ordered a Cafe Latte and only took two sips. Aside from getting almost half of the orders wrong our server was not friendly, she should honestly seek a different job if she doesn't know how to handle larger parties.
What is important is the food. Although my order was correct, the Ultimate Omelette was bland and lacked flavor-and this is what you call the ultimate?? Even their coffee tasted horrible. The only positive was the fresh fruit. We'll stick to Agoura Deli when in the area...much better!! -

I never thought I would like another deli in California than the Brent's Delicatessen located at Northridge, but I have. It's the Brent's Deli in Westlake Village!
Brent's at Westlake Village is so much nicer than the one in Northridge. It's more spacious inside and at the entrance; it has more parking spots; it's easily located off the highway; and the restaurant just looks better.

Review from Monica H.
Chatsworth, CA
Ok, this place was just weird. I know a ton of people like it, but frankly, I have no idea whyyyyy. It was totally EMPTY on a Sunday around 10. Um, what? That kind of scares me away, actually, especially if there's a ton of seating in there. ALSO, why seat two women in their early twenties (who want to catch up and have a PRIVATE conversation...cough cough...)right by a family with 3 young kids with inexperienced little ears?? There are enough tables in here to spead us out, lady! But as you will see, the entire staff in here was just ridiculous.
First of all, the hostess seated everyone willy nilly. Second, the waitress was either new or totally clueless or both. She had no knowledge of the menu whatsoever. My friend ordered the eggs benedict with hollandaise on the side (NO BIG DEAL, there are like 4 components total to that dish, just take one off). Our server looked at her blankly and said "Hollandaise?" and my friend goes "the sauce, can I please have it on the side?" and the sever goes "um....okay?" Weird. My order came out just fine (croissant breakfast sandwich), but the eggs b came out with SAUCE ALL OVER IT!
Finally the dish comes back the right way, we eat, we try to whisper so the children at the next table can't hear us, and we try to be satisfied. To no avail. The Canadian bacon on the eggs b was dry, my croissant was hard and too flaky.
I will never be back. The place looks fancy, but it's totally a bust. -
Review from Ana W.
Berkeley, CA
Brent's is not bad given the other choices in Westlake Village, but there are some areas where they could improve. For example, last time I was there I ordered a side salad with our other dishes. They literally poured pre-cut lettuce from a Kirkland-like bag and served this with some equally hospital quality salad dressing. You could argue that salad isn't their specialty, but it is the little details that make a place really good. I like the blintzes and most of the meats I've had there... almost NYC quality.

Northridge Brent's deli the best yet. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Fairfax area (Canters, yuk). Trying the Westlake Brent's for the first time tomorrow and hope it's as good as the Northridge location. (5 Stars for Northridge Brent's.) If you like chopped liver, it's great at NR locale.

Los Angeles, CA
Just visited Brent's for the first time today and loved it. First, I love the deli itself. Nothing fancy but just looks nice and feels inviting. I ordered the Brent's Special Club (3 decker) which has turkey, bacon, blt, mayo, and dressing. So much turkey!!! And thick bacon, I did have to take the lettuce and tom off because it was too big to eat. My side of potato salad was tasty; the salad was very average but nothing to complain about. Next time I will be taking some sandwich meat home, no more grocery store delis. Can't wait to go back once we move here and maybe try the breakfast.

Came here for breakfast around 9:00, super busy but worth it. We didn't have to wait too long either. I had the eggs benedict, hashbrowns, and a coffee. It was good, you can't really go wrong. I would come here again for breakfast.
A little overpriced for what it was but the food was good; I'd go back again. -
Review from J B.
Thousand Oaks, CA
I know the first place people probably think of to go get a salad might not be a deli, but being as many of us are eating salads as our main courses, it's always nice to get a good size one. Brents is the perfect place to go for this! They have a huge selection and if none of those suit your needs, they have a build your own salad where they will make virtually anything you want! The best part is that the salad is HUGE!!! One of the few places where it will actually fill you up.
As for the rest of the food, it's been hit or miss over the years, but mostly hit. The cold cuts are always good, the sandwiches are also generously portioned and the soups are very good also. It's tough because their desserts look so good, but I've always been too full to order one, so I can't review those...they do look delicious though :)
I've always had good service there, too.
My only complaint would be the location, but not worth losing any stars over.
