It is hard to find a good old fashion butcher now days, with all the large box supermarkets.  Brees' Meats brings you back to those days with a great selection of choice cut meats and helpful service.  Located actually next to Vons, they don't fear those boys.......

The truth of the matter is that we actually keep coming back for the Hot Dogs (Hoffy's natural casing). Nathans NOT, Farmer Johns NOT, Ball Park Frank NOT.  Believe me if you try one of these hot dogs, you will never look at a hot dog the same.  It looks the same, but bite into that sucker....snap, then all juice come out....can't get that with those skinless hot dogs.

    Worth every cent......

I don't know why this place has so many good reviews with Beef Palace not too far away. I've been here 3 times.

First visit I ordered the pastrami sandwich I've heard so much about. It was so salty I couldn't finish the sandwich. My friend warned me but I thought maybe it was just a preference issue but boy was I wrong...salty to the max!

Second visit I ordered their beef short ribs. It was decent, not bad but comparing the quality with Beef Palace...the beef short ribs at Beef Palace is noticeably way better tasting.

third, I came in asking for 3 racks of st louis cut spare ribs. The mexican guy that cut it for me didn't even know how to cut it st louis style and when he asked for help he still cut it wrong. I didn't realize it was wrong till I got home and had to cut it st louis style myself. Why pay the extra money at a local butcher if they can't do the most simple thing a butcher is supposed to do?

Another deciding factor for my 2 star review is when I asked the butcher about ordering a subprimal ribeye(the whole rack unsliced) he had no idea what a "subprimal" was. I can understand when a typical person off the street doesn't know what that is but a butcher?

I don't think these guys know much about meat compared to other places like Beef Palace and El Toro Meat Market. I don't think they really do much butchering(is that even a word?) considering all their meat is in cryovac.

Tucked away in the middle of this strip mall is a gem of quality meats.  I try to take a trip here as often as possible when I need fresh and quality products, instead of overspending at the neighboring mega grocery store.  The service is personable and informative, as well as fair pricing for quality products.

I recommend visiting this place if you want quality for products for a good price.

OK, so far this place gets 5 stars. I've only been here one time, and it was just for a couple of steaks. So here's my story.....

I live in West Anaheim, where there are only carnicerias nearby. Great if you want to make carne asada tacos, carnitas, etc. Not good if you want to grille a great steak. Carnicerias are no better than a supermarket meat department when it comes to finding decent steaks to grille. In fact, they are often worse because the best cut you can find are sometimes just select cuts of sirloin. Anyway, carnicerias are great for skirt steak, flap steak, fajitas, etc, not good for grilling steaks.

So, in years past, I was used to living near a good butcher and have been on a mission to find one reasonably close. One who knows how to properly cut a good piece of choice or prime beef from a cow. Now mind you, I can grille a mean steak, better than most restaurants if I have a quality cut of meat to work with. I have the knowledge, seasoning tricks and secrets to get the job done. However, if I'm not working with a good cut of beef, I'm behind the 8 ball before I get started. If I have to go to the local supermarket for steak, I'll pan fry it and make a sauce to kick it up. That's OK, I do wonders with deglazed balsamic steak sauces. Still ,I would much rather put my grilling chops to use with a good cut of beef and not depend on a sauce to kick up my steak.

Alright, I'll cut to the chase. I went into Brees and at first i was not impressed. Small meat market with a limited selection. However, at second glance, I noticed the pork chops were cut perfectly. Right away that told me they had a pro for a butcher. Limited steak selection, but what they had looked great, all choice cuts. Porterhouse/T-bones cut in perfect proportion, NY strips...long and lanky. I had a hard time deciding which cut to get. Then the rib eye caught my eye..... super thick, about an inch and a half..... trimmed perfectly. The rib eye it is!

So all the way home I was thinking...could I have finally found a good butcher that's maybe not close to the house, but at least in reasonable driving distance? I was praying that was the case, but I wouldn't know until I grilled the rib eye.

On to the grille......I seasoned and rubbed the rib eyes with my signature Tuscany Seasoning. Got the grille in the backyard searing hot...I mean crazy hot. I plopped both steaks on the grille and the sizzle was like music to my ears. One and a half minutes on each side and over to the medium hot side of the grille for another three minutes. Off the grille and simply topped with a small dollop of white truffle butter and let to rest for 10 minutes. Wow !!! Best steak I've had in years! I've only had better paying over $50 in a fine steakhouse for something aged. A perfect medium rare juicy masterpiece. They grilled exactly how I would expect top cuts of thick rib eyes to grille. I could not have done it without this quality of cut! My wife's eyes rolled back in her head while she said...where the hell did you find this steak? Nuff said!

I've only bought a couple of rib eyes from Brees and that's it, but so far their cuts of beef are the bomb! Awesome stuff!!! The rib eyes were $10.99 a pound and well worth it. I have paid as much at super markets for select cuts and have been really disappointed. Even if you get rib eyes on sale at $6 or $7 a pound, it is so worth spending the extra money at Brees for a great choice steak. These are at the top end of choice and darn close to prime. I think I found my go to butcher! Summer is coming so I will definitely be back!

We have enjoyed all the meat we have purchased from Brees (including ribs, pork butt, kabobs, etc.). BUT this review is for their sandwiches!  We finally bought sandwiches for lunch from Brees yesterday and I think it is the best sandwich I have ever had!  I had the Italian, and my husband had turkey and provolone.  They are really big. A half was plenty because they come with chips, yet my husband and I shared my second half because it was so delicious! We will definitely be back!

I stopped in here Saturday after reading the glowing reviews here on Yelp. I was in search of a lobe of foie gras for a recipe and could not find it anywhere. The 3 gentlemen behind the counter all called out hello or welcome as I walked in the door. Unfortunately, the do not carry foie gras but they were quick to recommend a few local places they thought would carry it. They were genuinely sorry they didn't have what I was looking for and asked me to stop back in soon and to give them a chance. Their display cases looked great all of the meat looked nice and fresh! They were kind and courteous and their product looks to be of high quality. I will definitely be back soon!

So Im calling ALL around town looking to buy some tomohawk steaks for a bet I loss... but no one could help!! I had already bought some expensive prime aged bone in rib eyes to pay the bet out but the damn winners wouldnt accept it as payment because they werent tomohawks!  DAMN YOU!! Finally when I spoke with a gentleman at Brees he said "we can do anything, come on down!"  I got to the shop and spoke with Tom and showed him what I wanted...he was like yeah we can order it for you...come in on Friday.
I come down Friday and they have a whole side of a cow for me!! YEAH! I hit the jackpot!  Another gentleman (4th generation owner...cant remember his name...the tomohawk in my belly is drawing all the blood from my brain) broke the "cow" down for me.  He walked me through every step of the process of breaking it down into my 7 tomohawks...made me cube steaks out of the flap, trimmed up the short ribs, and even traded out my scraps for ground meat!!  It was a great experience just watching him break it down!  They were awesome....they are definitely now, MY butcher! THank you!!!

It's a meat shop, but I come here for their sandwiches. You could definitely taste the quality of the meats here verses other sandwich shops.

The pastrami sandwich here is delicious! You don't have to worry about the bread cutting your gums ( like those baguettes ), or it being too dry or hard. The bread here is super soft and with the hot pastrami in it, its super delicious! The guys behind the counter are really nice and helpful.

Make sure to bring cash if you don't want to get charge the extra $1 for using a card. The sandwich comes out to $7 with a bag of chips.

I don't even eat meat but ... looking at the case at Bree's is enough to want to make a vegetarian have a steak!

That being said, I do buy meat.  And, I'm looking for something amazing to cook up at a BBQ, Bree's is the place to go.  Quality stuff.  Knowledgable staff.

People come from far and wide to Bree's.  As well you should. This is a bone fide butcher shop.  Forgot the meat section at your grocery store, if you want something REALLY good ... come to Bree's.

I asked for a half italian sub and I was told, "you can get two halfs".  OK, fine.

There's no where to sit in here so be prepared to either eat in your car or take it back to your home/office. There's room for a few tables I wonder why they wouldn't put a few out...

But it's quite obvious that Brees' Meats isn't a sandwich shop. This is a meat store. They've got all sorts of steaks, chicken, veal, etc. I noticed their carne asada looked pretty kick ass, as well as their fajitas. I would def. come back and pick up some meat to cook at home for a dinner.

They also have big meat packages you can buy, named by their plan. There's plan a, plan b, and plan c. At first all I saw was the plan b sign and I thought for a moment that this must be some pretty hardcore meat if they are selling plan b to go along with it. wowzers... Great idea if you are having a large party though.
    I digress...

So I order an italian sub. There's no menu for their subs, you basically just call out what you want. He asked if I wanted everything on it and I said yes... but then I asked if it has mayo on it. He said yes. Which made me sad. A great italian doesn't need mayo or mustard IMO. So I told him to hold the mayo.

I'm a shorty and could barely see over the glass deli display, even on my tippie toes, to see how he made my sandwich. What I did see though was a glimpse of a big knife spreading mustard all over it, which again made me sad.  I asked if he could add pepperoncinis, to which he replied, "we don't have those".

I took it back to work and was happy when I opened the sub to see italian dressing poured over the meat, tomato, shredded lettuce, and pickles. No onion? Ugh. But I took a bite and I gotta admit it is a legit italian sub. The mustard wasn't too overpowering and their quality meats (boars head) tasted wonderful on a soft roll.

I also got a small side of pasta salad and a bag of potato chips - grand total was $8.88.  That's a pretty damn good deal.

I'll come back during the summer - I wanna BBQ up some of the meat!

I've been here with the Boyf for marrow bones and fresh casings for Boyf to make legit homemade sausage.

I think we actually bought cuts of meat at one time, but those times escape me.

Back in Nov/Dec 2010 we had to ask if they had the bones for marrow - they did. We asked if they could cut them so they could be roasted and they did.

We asked if they had casings and they did and were truly interested in Boyf's plans for recipes and cuts to be ground up.

If you are interested in a legit butcher shop in OC, but easily accessible from LBC, this is your place.

Butcher shops, like fromagerie, bakeries, and green grocers, are going the way of the dodo. Don't let this shop be one of those.

Buying a sandwich from a butcher shop. What a crazy concept. These guys know meat best so it would make perfect sense to sell sandwiches too. Just eliminate the middle man.

I rolled in and didn't see a sandwich menu so I asked what was available. The nice latino man replied, "anything you want". Well then, I thought, I like me the sound of that. I reckon I'll have a roast beef sandwich then. "No problem", he says. This is how easy life should be all the time.

As he's prepping my sandwich I take a look at the meaty offerings behind the glass display. Everything was so neatly packed and super fresh looking. It sure beats any supermarket meat aisle I've been to. It had me salivating for some slabs of steak but alas I decided to come back another day.

Anyway, the sandwich was great. Quality meat held lovingly between some quality buns. Just the way it oughta be. Ya dig? For $7 it was alllll that AND a bag of chips. A Lays bag of chips that is. Betcha can't eat just one.

In conclusion, I like this man's meat.

5 stars for the market also having a deli, but the sandwich is really 4 stars.

Despite the sour mood the older guy that was working had I'm still going to give Brees' the full 5 stars they deserve... especially for their great selection of meats and sauces.

The guy helping me was really nice. He helped me get a pound of bacon, a half a pound of ground beef, 3 Sweet Italian Sausages, and a jar of the "Best BBQ Sauce" for $18! As Chris D. mentioned it really IS the best I've ever tried and I've had quite a bit.

This butcher shop is great. If you haven't visited it yet and you're having a bbq head here first! They have so many different types of meat and party package specials, they've got rubs, spices, condiments, pre marinated meats, home made sausages, cheeses, you name it and they've got you set to host an impressive BBQ for you and your closest friends or families.

Or if you're hungry then they have some awesome sandwiches here too with freshly sliced Boar's Head meats. Soft fresh bread provided by the folks over at Sam's Club.

The staff here (most of the time) is so incredibly nice and knowledgeable offering assistance and advice without seeming like you are a burden (most of the time!)

Please support the little guy and check out Brees'

As you can imagine there is no seating... if you'd like to know why you can always ask one of them and they will explain why.

There is plenty of parking in this Strip Mall.

Great butcher shop! Have purchased a variety of their meats, and the guys behind the counter will even tell you some good ways to cook them... for example, their stuffed pork chops... I am not a pork chop eater and have no idea how to cook them, but damn it looked good sitting there under the glass... taunting me to eat it... so I obliged. The butcher wrote down cooking directions to the T for me (on a piece of butcher paper of course...) and they came out fan-freakin-tastic! My wife also loved them!

I also have had a few of their sausages... I got some of the frozen selection out of the freezer... thawing them kinda sucked because I only needed two for my wife and I and there are 5 frozen together in a big clump... so I ended up cooking all 5 (which meant I had a killer lunch to take to work the next day).

I have also gone there on occasion for sandwiches. They use Boars Head meats and cheeses... and they are not stingy with those meats and cheeses... No fancy toppings... lettuce, tomato, mayo... the basics...! Only down side, if you go in later in the day, they may be out of bread (they only offer white or wheat).

If sandwiches are what you like, then this is the place to go. Forget Subway or Quiznos.

The deli shop is clean, organized, and spacious. They have all kinds if meats, both or sandwiches and raw to buy home. They also have different kinds of cheese to go with your sandwiches. Of course you get your typical choices of toppings like lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo, mustard, pickles, etc..... catered to your request.

Oh, they have wheat bread now!

They give you tons of meat, TONS! If you're a girl, I'd definitely split it with another girl.

I'm giving it 3 stars because, unfortunately, I'm NOT a sandwich person.

I had the pastrami sandwich like everyone else on here recommended today for lunch. It was sooooo yummy and it practically melts in your mouth! It was a very good value ($7) for the  large amount of meat on my sandwich and it came with a bag of potato chips.
Josh was very welcoming, helped me right away and was super friendly. I didn't catch the other guy's name who rang me up, but he was also very nice.
They have a very wide selection of meat, some already with the salt and seasoning on it so all you have to do is stick it in the oven/ grill/ pan/ etc. I appreciate this because I HATE cooking! This way I can get a nice "homemade" meal without doing too much work ;)
I do wish they had a menu for the sandwiches... oh well

I hope to come back soon so I can try everything!

For years around my office I've had a chance to try some of the local eateries and after a suggestion from a fellow friend/yelper I decided to check this place out.  I love the idea of a great butcher and I was also excited to find out they serve sandwiches.

I made my way over there and was dumbfounded by the amount of different meats they carried.  Perfect if you're having a bbq, smoking meats, or feeding a monster that lives under your stairway.

Right when you walk in you can see they have a great selection of meats and cheeses to build your own sandwich.  All the meats were of Boars Head Brand which was a great sign.  I didn't really know what to try so the butcher cut me a few samples of different meats to test.  Yes, they do slice the meats for you on a meat slicer.  None of the stuff comes out of a package pre-sliced.  Subway Sandwich Artists? Please!  These guys here deserve the designation of Sandwich Artists if anyone does.  So back to the sandwiches, you have your choice of meats and cheese in a variety of different combinations. The bread they use is great, the portion of the sandwich is awesome.  What more can you ask for?  You also get a bag of Lays potato chips to pair.  Definitely a place you should check out for lunch.  I hear you can even buy giant dog bones for Fido to gnaw on.

Chad Chadams Chadmeister A. was correct about the pastrami. I had to immediately go out and get the pastrami sandwich since he claims it's better than the hat. I was skeptical when the guy threw the pastrami in the microwave. I was also shell shocked when I was told "We're out of sliced pickles". The guy watched on as my face lost all color, my eye started twitching, and my flight or fight instinct kicked in. When all hope was lost I saw the giant jar of pickles on the counter, one I've purchased many a pickle out of of. I said "I'll buy one of those pickles and you slice it up for me and put in on the sandwich... I can't have pastrami without pickles". He smiled and said "Nah, I'll slice it up for ya and not charge you.... we should have pickles". Disaster avoided! Thank you Bree's!

The sandwich was great. The boar's head pastrami was tender and well seasoned. I couldn't even tell it was microwaved. As I mentioned in past reviews for this place they have the best bread ever. Shocking they get it from Sam's Club.

While waiting for my sandwich I noticed a jar of BBQ sauce called "The Best BBQ Sauce you'll ever taste". That's literally the name of it. I had to take up this challenge and purchase a jar. To my shock and bewilderment it is literally the best BBQ sauce I've ever tasted. I dipped some Von's potato wedges into it and was blown away. Last night I made a meatloaf from Bree's meatloaf mix(makes excellent meat balls too) and topped it with the BBQ sauce. Wow.... it's thick and sticks to the meat. Made for a great meatloaf topper. What's cool is the company has a 714 area code so it's local! I'll have to try the "Best Teriyaki" sauce next.

This review is mainly for the pastrami sandwich. This is a meat shop, but they also have sandwiches.

The other Yelpers were right. The pastrami sandwich here is fantastic. The bread is soft and fresh and the pastrami is tender and perfectly seasoned. It also comes with pickles and mustard and I usually get Swiss with it. The sandwich also has the perfect meat to bread ratio. At other shops, the ratio would be off so there would be more meat or more bread. Here, it is perfect, making every bite as good as the last. They also put a lot of mustard in the sandwich, which is awesome because I LOVE mustard.

The pastrami sandwich comes with a bag of chips and costs $7. This is a steal because one sandwich is big enough for two people.

However, I wish they would put up a sandwich menu. It would make ordering a lot easier for people.

Shop is clean. Service is friendly. There are no tables though, so you have to eat it somewhere else.

Overall, awesome place to get a super tasty sandwich.

By the way, the jar on the counter contains some of the biggest pickles I have ever seen in my life.

AWESOME!!! I know I use this word a lot, but it couldn't be any more perfect to describe this place. Great selection, great prices, and great service! I get my short ribs and veal here. But what I really like about this place, is their sandwiches. They carry Boar's Head deli meats and they make some pretty awesome sandwiches. Nothing beats a freshly cut deli sandwich made right in front of you! If you go here, you have to try the Hot Pastrami Sandwich. Mustard, onions, and  in house made pickles... To die for!

When you walk in, the pungent smell can be a bit overwhelming at first. But I don't frequent butcher/meat shops often, so I would guess that's just the way a store that sells raw meat smells like.

Bree's is--first and foremost--a meat store, with a sandwich business on the side. They don't even advertise that they sell sandwiches. You kinda have to know about it going in (from online research). Interestingly, they're located right next door to a Philly's Best cheesesteak and hogie restaurant.

I've grown weary of the chain sandwich shops that pass off their over-processed, artificial crap as "food." (Subway's "turkey-based" pastrami and cold cuts... WTF is that?!?).

Bree's has a nice selection of fresh meat and poultry, as well as pre-marinated cuts. As for the sandwiches: you won't find ten different kinds of bread and wraps here, or a dozen different sauces in squeeze bottles, and they don't make the sandwiches in front of you where you can micromanage how many olives they put on.

What you will get, however, is an honest sandwich with fresh, quality ingredients. The meat tastes like what it's supposed to taste like... and at a very reasonable price.

Now, I do love me The Hatt.  However, Brees' pastrami sandwich is really AMAZING.  Not as much pastrami, but WAY better quality.  Really friendly guys behind the counter.  No pushing no hurrying, you are left to peruse at your leisure.

I got the pollo asada, bbq sauce, and GARLIC BOLOGNA there as well.  I had a nibble of the bologna and it is awesome.  So much so, after having a bite, my boss gave me the $ I paid and kept it!  That is perfectly OK as I plan to visit here quite often.

It doesn't get any better than this!  We get our XMas aged prime rib here and it is fabulous.  So glad we have real butchers left in the area.

I LOVE the sandwiches from this place. I dragged my friends here for lunch we were actually turned away because they ran out of bread! WHY?!?!

I came back with my friends a few days later and we were in luck! THEY HAD BREAD! So finally, we ordered some sandwiches to go. I got a turkey sandwich with everything except mayo. My friends got a ham/turkey sandwich and a ham/roast beef (I think) sandwich with everything on it.

The sandwiches were only $6 and came with a small bag of Lay's potato chips. Not too shabby of a deal, if I must say. My sandwich was great and the meat and veggies were fresh and delicious. I also got deli mustard on my sandwich which gave it a hint of spiciness that made my awesome sandwich that much better.

I only wish Bree's offered whole wheat bread for their sandwiches. I understand white bread tastes better with the meat and such, but I prefer whole wheat cause it's healthier and tastes better to me. That's just me though. I'll still eat here though because it's just that good. Thanks Brees'!

    I like meat.

Aside from being your typical deli, they also serve sandwiches here using authentic Boar's Head meats. These sandwiches can come with any of their sliced meats and selection of cheeses. The sandwiches here make Subway subs look like a joke. You get a sandwich that is at least a foot long and is about 3-4 inches in diameter. The bread is fresh, as well as the veggies. It also comes with a small bag of chips. All of this is $6 ($7 for roast beef). This is a great value for anyone looking to eat a healthy lunch.

But would it kill to have disposable cups for (iced) water for customers...?

This place is truly a find! An even better for me....It's LOCAL!

I wasn't always the biggest sandwich fan, until recently and this place hits the spot.

Every sandwich is carefully put together with perfect balance.  Perfect amount of veggies to bread to condiment ratio.

Everyone goes for the pastrami. However, since I'm not really a pastrami fan I always get the Ham and Swiss. It's Delicious! Go Now and Get One!

This place is on my way home, and I just started stopping there when I want something to throw on the grill for dinner.  Actually, the first time was St. Patrick's Day when I got a brisket to grill because the grocery store next door had run out.

The meats here are great.  The cheeses here are great.  The staff is awesome and they love to make conversation while they are helping you with your selection.  I also noticed that they have a sandwich area and can slice up fresh meats and cheeses to make you a gourmet sandwich right there.

I really like this place, which creates a conundrum because I also really like the Beef Palace.  I am currently just trying to eat more meat so that I have ample opportunities to provide business for both shops.  Please help me!

Prices are good, employees are friendly. The roast beef sandwich I tried wasn't as fantastic as I thought it would be. I guess the high ratings may be due to prices.

The biggest food gem EVER.  If you want to be a better cook, you have to understand the ingredients you cook, and if you have a chance to interact with the farmer/fishmonger/butcher, it is an opportunity you should take.

Think about it.  Go to any of your markets and start talking to the butcher.  Ask where the cows from.  How they are fed.  How their marbling is.  Most of the time you will get a blank look.

Ask the difference between the cuts.  Ask what is better today.  Ask preparation techniques.

When you go to Bree's, they will give you the time of day and answer all of your questions.  I think often, we learn best from other people and not a book.

    Meat review:
+ rib eye: probably one of the most even marblings you'll ever experience.  The ribeye is a little different because it is not extremely fatty like other markets.  Take care to use a themometer because the redness is deceiving in this meat.

+ filet mignon: a perfect cut.  I usually rough handle this cut and sear it in a dry crust seasoning

+ flat iron steak (aka 7-blade top cut or something).  This is a truly amazing cut and is really cheap.  It is part of the top of the chuck and there is only so many pieces in a cow so they don't have it that often

+ 30 -day aged prime rib: they have it.  You need to order 30 days before thanksgiving.  I haven't had it yet, but i'm ordering it this year.

Prices a little higher than usual, but nothing like whole foods.

You need to go here now.

I got introduced to this place by my co-workers.  I don't think you can find any fresher hoagie sandwiches than Brees'.  Where else can you go where the meat and cheese is sliced fresh to order? Ok, I know Submarina does that too, but their meat is some low quality stuff compared to the Boar's Head meats that Brees' carries.  They also slice their own veggies in the morning too!  The "boys" are great, they're always friendly and certainly do their best to serve you.  And the best part is the price: $6 for a 12" sandwich with chips, add $1 for Beef or if you pay with a credit card.

There are some downsides though with Brees'.  For one, the sandwiches are massive!  I used to be able to eat a whole sandwich for lunch, but that was when I was fat.  Now that I've slimmed, I usually eat half for lunch and save the other half in the fridge for later.  The other downside is that they only stock a limited number of rolls each day.  Once they're out for the the day, they're out for the day.  And they won't make you a sandwich even if you went next door to Vons and bought a roll.  If you go in during a typical lunch time, you should be ok but I would say after 2pm you are out of luck.

I've yet to buy fresh meat from here, but I will someday...someday, I promise.
