It's all about the instructors ...
I have been searching for a new home to stretch and strengthen my body. I tried Zumba - what fun, but so one-dimensional. I tried 24 hour Fitness - what a meat market (and I don't look good enough in short shorts or tight yoga pants - yet!). Three other yoga facilities - great exercise, but such a disconnect. The instructors were either too young, too old or just too pretentious - as if being a yogi put them on a higher plane than I could possibly attain.
Then I stumbled on Breathe on Google Places and thought, why not? Cycling and Yoga and Art ... anyone that thought to put all of those together must be unique :-). Their website was great, and reading the instructor bios I thought they might have something ...
I have been blown away with how wonderful ALL of the instructors are - every one of them! Sarah (the owner) took time to custom fit my cycle (I am not an experienced spin person) and she saved my measurements in my file so I can reference them whenever I need them. She makes a point of saying hi, or have a great class - always smiling. Jennie teaches a great, down to earth Yin class (one of the only places that offers Yin - highly recommend it!) where you are laughing while your connective tissue is creaking towards some degree of flexibility. I took Kate's Yin class last night and the whole class was busting up as she is telling us jokes while we are holding the poses ... never a dull moment.
Emily's emPower class makes me feel whole and strong and fearless and loved - how does one person teach an entire room full of people this in an hour? I don't know, but she is magic! Brit's Align and Flow class has me sweating while contemplating the meditation she set for us at the beginning of class. Kacia was a true inspiration in YogaCycle as she came around to check our numbers and push us to break our own barriers.
I am now a daily visitor as their class roster mixes it up enough for me that I am always working a different aspect of my body. When I am there, I think of nothing but breathing, my meditation, smiling, laughing out loud, pushing past that next barrier ... remembering that I am stronger than I think I am. Errands, kids, To-Do's, that fight with my man last night never enter my mind. I am completely focused every day on my body, my health and my spiritual awareness all coming together to reveal a new, synergistic me - worth every penny and every ounce of sweat we are all investing together.
Thanks, Breathe ... -

What is there not to love about Breathe. It's cycling studio upstairs is open to the natural light of the street, and the cycling classes are led by great instructors, with fantastic music, and a mindfulness in the way the teach.
And, then you can go downstairs to catch one of their amazing yoga classes. Sarah is an amazing flow teacher who brings challenge, great music, and laughter to her classes. Ashley Sargent is a beautiful and sweet soul who will restore your mind and body. And, Kate gives an amazing Yin experience.
It is so great to have a down-to-earth, welcoming place to practice yoga and to cycle. -

I was looking to start spinning again and so naturally I turned to Yelp for suggestions on where I should go, and... wait, what's that? a discount? I'm in! First class was a bomb, but apparently even though I hadn't been to a spinning class in a year the "beginner" spin is really for True (think never done this before) beginners. So next I went to Metal Mondays - and I've been there almost every Monday since. Carol is an incredibly enthusiastic teacher that really pushes you to your limit, and even if you don't consider yourself the "thrash metal type" I'd suggest giving the class a try, its amazing how much a little angst can get you revved up on the bike! My only complaint is that she could better match the desired RPM's of the course to the music. I've only had one or two spinning instructors that really accomplished that well, and unfortunately for them rhythm is something you either have or you don't, I'm not sure it can be learned but hey it's worth a shot! (Carol if you're reading this give me a call and I'd love to try and help!) Also, I'm loving the fact that Shakta on Santa Fe is now part of the Breathe family - went to a yoga flow there that I Looooved, and although I tend to have a go-go-go preference of work out, the class reinforced the benefits of really good yoga to me! THANK YOU!

I really love Breathe. I was hesitant to sign up for a yoga studio because, let's face it, Denver and Boulder tend to be full of sinewy bodies that pose with grace and ease and I just had visions of those thin, muscular men and women doing poses with no problem while I sweated my ass off and was like "lolwut? I just need a stretch."
I've been going to flow once a week for the past 3 weeks and this week decided to up it to twice a week. I'm generally just a runner which leads to a lot of tightness in my legs, so this has been really helpful in providing my body some balance. I haven't done the yoga/spin yet but would like to try!
I think what has really made the experience enjoyable is the down to earth vibe of the studio/classes/other classmates. So far I've been able to focus on doing my own thing since no one has been intimidating or competitive (and that's not to say people aren't NEXT LEVEL because I have definitely noticed some clear veterans). It's just -- yoga is really all about YOUR practice so it's nice to not feel judged, but supported. This studio offers a great workout without any pretentiousness. Real talk. Real humans. No bullshit. It's nice.
I am excited to continue going and I'd recommend it to anyone. -

I found Breathe through a Bloomspot deal. It was my first experience with indoor cycling, and I must say Breathe does it right. I've since tried a couple other cycling classes at other locations, and have been consistently disappointed. Breathe instructors fit you for your bike and teach you how to ride with attention to form, breath, exertion. The instructors are enthusiastic and kick my butt! I love it!

Breathe is the best studio I have found to date. I am a cyclist and the combination of yoga and cycling has made me better on race day. For any of you fellow gear heads who think the courses offered will not be a challenge for you - you're wrong! Sarah and crew will test your physical abilities and prepare you for the mental challenges that come with cycling and life. Thanks Sarah and Breathe staff!

Holding down the northwest corner of Colfax and Vine, you'll find the unassuming yoga studio of Breathe. This two-floor studio is packed with fantastic artwork, energy and zen. You just need to step inside to experience its beauty.
On the ground floor you'll find the cycling studio: a dozen stationary bikes will get your heart pumping and your muscles burning while you ride to some great tunes. Downstairs you'll find the cozy embrace of the yoga studio: a friendly Ganesh watches over the surprisingly comfortable space with relatively dim lighting. You'd never know that the hustle and bustle of Colfax was continuing on while you practice your downward dog.
Forgot your mat, blocks, or bolster? No worries, Breathe provides them for you at no extra charge.
Now on to the classes!
So far, I've checked out a handful of classes. Here's the rundown:
Yogacycle: This is a cool class that begins with a 30 minute bike ride followed by a vinasaya-like yoga cool down. I loved it! What an awesome concept. Be sure to sign up online to reserve your bike.
Mind-Body-Fit: Breathe's newest class, taught by Drew. I was so curious about a circuit-style yoga + martial arts class that I couldn't resist popping in last Sunday. Come in, leave your inhibitions at the door, and jump into Drew's inspiring and well, entertaining, class. Combine asanas to create unique and challenging flows. I haven't laughed so much in a yoga class! If you want to try something *completely* different, stop in for this class.
Yogaflow: This is your traditional vinayasa flow class, but of course, with the flexibility of Breathe's teachers to adjust as they see fit. Be ready for your hamstrings, thighs, and calves to be burning for a few days!
After trying several different yoga studios throughout Denver, I was entirely impressed with Breathe, from the welcoming and cool atmosphere to the unique and wide range of classes. Passionate teachers will welcome and help you continue in your practice.
Step aside corporate giants, you've got some serious competition in town.Listed in: Denver Yoga Studios

I am in love. Passionate love with this place. I am not in good shape, but am trying to be so Beginner Cycle with Jen is exactly what I am looking for. She was peppy and fun and had great tunes, and didn't try to kill me in the interim. After my first class I instantly threw down for a package deal and cannot wait to try the yogacycle classes! It's a small studio that feels very inspiring and non-judgy, unlike a lot of gyms. I wish it were closer to where I live but it's pretty close to work so I'm thinking I'll still get over there as much as I want to. Fantastic!
BONUS: they have a lot you can park in - thank god!Listed in: The Biggest Loser

I love this place! I go to Brit's yoga class on Saturday mornings- she kicks your butt but makes it fun, and is excellent at explaining and demonstrating poses. I really like her. There was a sub once, and she was really great, too. The atmosphere of this studio is so welcoming. I wish my schedule allowed me to go to more of the yoga classes throughout the week!

Breathe is the best experience in yoga I have had and I must say the reason for this is Brittney. She takes yoga to a whole new level, nurturing the mind and body while leading you through the best yoga practice ever! I have had many instructors, but if you want a truly yogic experience go to one of Brittney's classes at Breathe!!!

Breathe is a great yoga studio - I haven't been for cycling class yet, but Emily's empower yoga is amazing and the classes are nice and small. The atmosphere was intimate and friendly, and the instructors are willing to help with adjustments and encouragement. I'm excited to have a great, local option for yoga that's not a big chain!

I guess I'm not sure if this place is for athletes, (spin). I would definitely recommend it for someone who hasn't exercised in a long time to get some cardio in. But for someone who runs hours a week, it's pretty easy. Went on a monday night for the core and spin class. It is a small room and the bikes faced the mirror not the instructor, so if I need to look at her, I had to turn my neck, which isn't good form to spin in. Had a nice warm up, the work out was okay and the cool down was like other cool downs. I think spin is all about the instructor. And the people at ride. a spin club in Wheat Ridge, do keep you in the zone longer and make you work harder. The people there can be pretty serious cyclists and I felt like I burned a lot more calories there than at Breathe in an hour.
I know you're supposed to set your own pace and resistance, but an instructor is also supposed to kick your ass and keep you into it. I did sweat a lot, but I just sweat a lot, I sweat while walking, crazy me. That doesn't mean take it easy. So I increased resistance when I could, I'm only slightly sore the next day, not really sore I guess, just feels like my legs were moving a lot the day before. Better than watching TV I suppose.
I found out my core is super weak, so just running does nothing for the core. I will do some more core exercises on my own time now. So thanks for showing that to me.
Haven't tried the yoga.
So okay for beginners, if you already have endurance though it won't be hard enough for you. I was ready to run after. And arrive early not on time or you might get lectured, even as a new client. -

I found my workout soul mate. I'm not exactly a gym rat and the only competitions I like involve drinking so I wasn't sure I would like going to a studio to work out. But after almost a year of going to Breathe, I'm hooked.
Spin kicks my butt and all of the yoga teachers are amazing. Sometimes it's the little things that make you happy and Breathe makes me happy! Plus they have art openings and bike rides to the Denver Art Museum. I highly recommend Breathe to anyone who doesn't like the vibe at 24 Hour Fitness. -

Check out our Metal Monday and Thrashin' Thursday spin classes. Just make sure you reserve a bike at http://www.breathedenv..., it takes only a few seconds!
Don't forget to bring a towel, water bottle and comfortable shoes. -

I wanted to post a letter I recently wrote to the owner of Breathe as well as giving a few details that might be useful.
Breathe is such a completely amazing studio, the flow-style Vinyasa yoga is amazing, great core workout that leaves my abs in a deep ache for days, but I am confident will transform my biking ride with such a strong ab and improve my poses, the cycling classes are incredible. Everyone has favorite instructors and styles, but I love teachers who are approachable (really all are at Breathe), enthusiastic, select super fun thoughtful music to bike to, and have a wonderful sense of ease during their class so I am not watching the clock wondering when I will be done with the class that I just paid to take. As for my favorites, that is definitely Sarah and Peggy. I am so impressed with their classes and feel really empowered after spending a few weeks at the studio. My body is stronger, my lungs resilient, and my stretch deep. Now, for my letter....
Sarah,
I know I am an on again off again cycler at the studio, much of that due to the fact that I was out of town for two full months in the past six, so it has made being consistent hard. Despite this, I was hoping to say a quick word about the Tuesday night yogacycle class at 7:15. I fell in love with your 6am classes months ago, but my schedule has changed and I now have to be in the office at 6, so I needed to find a new fix, which is Peggy. I adore her classes. I love that they are challenging, but very fun; Peggy is exceedingly affirming, not just as a yoga instructor or even as a cycling instructor, but has a vibrant human being who seems to do whatever possible to lift up those around her. Peggy took the time to help me modify my workout to accommodate my failing knees, strengthen my hips, and a work around a pose that is particularly troublesome. I feel supported and encouraged in her classes. I have taken classes with many of the instructors at Breathe and I have seen many of their names on the roster for the Tuesday night classes, which I have been thankful so far only Peggy has taught, but I thought I would go out on a limb and see if she could always teach that course? I understand that she may have other commitments, but I just wanted to show support for my favorite instructor and make a promise to go as often as possible to her classes as I am able in hopes that her name might show up a bit more often in the evenings.
I adore Breathe and love that I feel like I have turned around some health concerns in 6 months because of what your studio is able to offer me, so thank you.
With sincerity,
I hope you you check out Breathe and appreciate it as much as I do.Comment from Sarah R. of Breathe Denver Yoga & Cycling Studio 9/15/2011

I just moved to Denver and was looking for a new "home" yoga studio and I think I've found it! I attended Sarah's YogaCycle class this morning and it was a great workout! She's an excellent instructor and the studio has a great atmosphere.
