Tucson, AZ
I liked this place! The vibe was really cool! I tried the Mead which was like a beer wine. I had never tried anything like that before. They have a lot of different beers to offer and I was happy with the 2 I tried.
We decided to order some appetizers. We tried the rib tips and the veggie plate. I would recommend the rib tips! The veggie plate wasn't that "fresh." We got a growler to go. We left happy! -

Pizza good. Old blue eyes pint great. Service ......horrible.
Went with 12 people and spent most of my time tracking down my order, chasing a bar tender and asking for stuff etc.
Go during the day and enjoy the pints.
To me service matters and this place lacks it. -
Review from Larrythediner A.
Escondido, CA
My ACTUAL rating is 2.5 STARS. More than 2, not quite 3. HALF of a good eating / drinking establishment. Food / drink good, service BAD.
I've got good news and bad news for Breakwater Brewing Company.
1st the good news:
LOCATION:
Breakwater's within walking distance of the beach. Who doesn't need refreshment after a day of surfing, swimming, sunbathing? Right on the 101, easy to find & near the Coaster; I can get here from Escondido w/o drivingt! Cab, Sprinter, Coaster, & I'm here!
BREWS:
Selection of "House-Brewed" offerings impressive not only in quality, but the sheer numbers. I've not been to every brew pub around, but I'm used to a place having a max of maybe 4 or 5 house brews. These guys have a dozen! They may have more than that; that's just what was posted, although a customer told me they're out of the IPA, & had been for awhile. Me, I tried the "Beach Honey" (5.2%) and the "Beachbreak Brown" (7.3%). Both were really good. Also sampled "Rasbiscus Mead" cuz I was curious as to their most potent offering (10%). Looked more like rose wine; OK, but couldn't take a steady diet of that one. But that's just me. Overall I think I could give all their house-brews a "thumbs up", even though I didn't try all of them on this visit. Also, I noticed that you can buy a JUG for $12 & get filled up with whatever brew you want for the price of a pitcher & take it with you. And you can bring it back and get it REFILLED?! Cool!
FOOD:
I did eat while there. I had "The Mafia": a Panini sandwich, consisting of Salami, Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, Capicolla ham, & mozzarella with Italian dressing. Good selection of breads, including REAL Amoroso rolls; I had mine on Rosemary bread. Sandwich was very flavorful, with the proper "meat-to-bread" ratio; if you've read my other reviews, you already know I consider this important, & worth mentioning. I'M not impressed with mountains of meat, but the overall quality of the sandwich.
Besides Panini's, Breakwater also has pizza & toasted sandwiches. I'm sure the other offerings on the menu would measure up to what I had on this, my first visit, and what I had was really good. Prices comparable to what you're gonna find at like establishments. In other words prices r reasonable; won't break the bank.
BAD NEWS:
When I am visiting a place for the first time, I always let it be known to whoever is serving me that I'm a "first-timer", in case they want to try to make a good first impression. It's a well-known Proverb: "first impressions are lasting". VERY TRUE. As a restauranteur, first impressions can be the ONLY impressions you get a chance to make, if it's a bad one. If a customer is not impressed overall, they NEVER COME BACK. I'm not sure this place's Management "gets" that concept.
How did Breakwater do in this category?
Customer service & courtesy level of staff? Falls WAY short. This was my first visit & I initially thought maybe it was because I'm not a "regular", and they didn't know me. Maybe cuz I was wearing a "Blue Angels" T-shirt & they don't like military? Not a veteran, but I support them. The whole vibe of the place is counterculture / alternative / surfer; maybe they don't like what they perceive as "conservative / establishment" types. Couldn't see my "inner hippie", since my hair is now short?
Nope, none of the above. I think they're just UNFRIENDLY, that's all. Or if not that, just INDIFFERENT. N-O-T good in a service-related industry.
My first beer and every beer for that matter, was full; I like that. But it was SLOPPED in front of me, no napkin, beer spilling out all over the place, & presented to me with no napkin. Enough spillage to start running all over the counter. Did my bartender notice this & maybe wipe up the spill? Nope. I wiped it up myself and put the napkins on the bartender's rubber mat to maybe send her a message. Message not received; mark of a bartender with no pride in their profession, if you ask me.
After being served, I'm not approached again till my beer's empty. Since I'm now in a position to spend more $, I'm asked if I'd like another one. That was the extent of the conversation I had with any of the staff.
Summing up customer service: As earlier stated, they seem indifferent, & while not downright rude, they were borderline. I initially thought maybe it was just ME. But when I got home, looked 'em up on Yelp & started reading other reviews, courtesy complaint kept coming up, even from folks who identified themselves as REPEAT customers. Some of THOSE were not recent, meaning the owners have had time to read the feedback and maybe FIX THE PROBLEM. Guess they're indifferent too.
Bottom line: Since the beer & the food are good, I may go back, but won't recommend Breakwater Brewing to anyone without my negative impressions thrown in.
There are other brew pubs in the area. This is the 1st one I tried in the O'side area. Maybe I need to keep searching?

Went with the family, My sister plus boyfriend, 3 little ones, 2 older nephews and 1 gf. We really didn't spend much, got the jerk chicken pizza, one with pep & bacon, one Hawaii style. The jerk chicken was excellent but not spicy. The other two were good but one was soggy. The flavors were awesome & pizza dough I am sure is homemade. The beers were very good , I recommend the rasbiscus mead its awesome doesn't even taste like beer. Small space though good for luch but I would skip dinner there it fills up quick!

Breweries are everywhere here. This one has the least pretentious vibe out of all of them. Basically the local hangout that makes its own brews. Amazing brews. They even have a mead.
Food is stellar, music is loud, tables cramped, well worth every minute. Service and bartenders are very friendly. Vibe is local, heady, and relaxed. -

This place is fantastic!!! Del Mar Jetty IPA is my favorite of their beers! Wide variety of guest beers and rare releases. Jamie is by the far best beer-tender. She's extremely informative and always keeps the beers coming. They always have the Lakers on, which is a plus.
Don't get me started on their pizza. SO GOOD!!! Try the Mediterranean! They make their own dough daily and you can tell it's always so fresh. This place is a gem of Oceanside -

After a nice day in Laguna Beach yesterday we decided to drive down towards home in San Diego.
We didn't get to have lunch yet so on our way down we thought we would just stop by somewhere to eat and didn't have anything in mind. We were just driving passing by Breakwater Brewing and decided to stop on in.
Along with me was my wife and daughter on this beautiful mother's day. Not the typical place where you spend a mother's day lunch but we decided to check it out.
First off ,coming in we we're not greeted at all. We took a table and reviewed the menu. We decided on a few items and placed our order. The person taking my order didn't seem like she was paying attention as I had to repeat a portion of my order. I went ahead and paid and got my cups for our drink.
I guess this was pretty much self service as you would just help yourself to the soda fountain. Being that this was a bar restaurant they had a few flat T.V's in the bar area showing a few of the games. It didn't look very busy and seems like everyone was pretty laid back.
We'll we finally got our food and our server basically just placed it on our table. Did not even greet us or wish my wife a happy mothers day as it was obvious with our daughter at the table. Most of the time I am a very generous tipper and tip based on service and that's how it should be. People in the hospitality industry should not just expect a tip because they brought your food and drink to your table. I believe there should be some customer service like asking a simple question how is everything? Is there anything else I can get you? Maybe check in with the customer at least once since you've delivered their order or maybe even introducing yourself. I'm not sure if was due to us being the only Asians in there at the time or not a regular customer. I can assure you I would not come back based on this experience.
The food was not bad and based on some yelp reviews while we looking at the menu I decided on the strand rib tips. I had it prepared with their Cajun sauce. I got 3 pieces of rib tips but didn't have much meat. It was a little fatty on a huge piece of cartilage.
The fresh bread sticks was very good that came along with marinara and ranch dipping sauce. My wife really liked the Cesar salad as it was refreshing and crispy.
Based on this experience and being my first time I would not see myself returning to this restaurant nor could I recommend to my friends that live in the area. I didn't get a chance to taste any of their house brews so I could not comment on their beers.
The only thing I would say to the owners is that customer service definitely needs improvement and for their employees to treat customers that would make them come back. -

I am not a beer drinker so all I can say is that I have heard great things about the beer selection and quality. Their pizza is as good as any in Oceanside or Vista.
Doesn't take like all the other joints. They have a very distinct taste and great variety. Sandwiches are excellent. Salads are so so. Service is very good. Love the location. That's about it. I recommend it. -

Good menu with panini and sandwiches, pizza, and salads. Their own beer is quite good, and the tap list always good featuring some great craft brews, local and from outside.

Two words: Kali Kush baby!
Ok, that was three ... but this beer was freakin' awesome. And the 49ers game that was on was the perfect backdrop to a great outing. Good people watching, filled with what I like to call the "token locals" ... ie the guy that knows all the beers and sits near the ordering spot giving you suggestions just to hit on you, the guy tatted up with dreads, the local frat/ surfer kids (I think they're molding together at this point; everyone is just in NEON!)
Ordered the pizza bites with some artichoke and chicken - they were bomb. I know I'm not from around here, but with all the neg reviews it makes me feel like you all have never actually had "bad" pizza. This isn't "bad" pizza. The toppings were fresh, the sauce was good, the pizza crust was decent - for $5, 3 of us split a couple pieces and it was delicious.
The location is perfect, within walking distance from the Coaster, which is the whole reason why we were over there anyway, to pick up one of our friends. We just had her walk a few blocks and met her at the bar! -

I love breakwater! Right now this is my favorite pizza in town. The carnivore pizza is the best, so so so good. The other food is good as well but the pizza is the best. They have a large beer menu, their beers and other guest beers. They have fun things going on during the month so make sure to check out their calender.

Apparently this place was started by two former Pizza Port employees. I believe it. Take Pizza Port pizza, lower the quality a couple of notches, but keep the price the same, and you've got Breakwater Brewing pizza.
I didn't try their house beer, but they had Humboldt's Red Nectar for $3 a pint, so I can't complain about that. They do have a good beer selection.
I think this is more of a place in which to have a pint or two, but maybe the rest of their food menu is better. I'll probably never know, though, because I probably won't return. -

Good food, great beers. Notice that some other reviews don't like the service, the waitresses don't smile. News flash, they don't have waitresses!! You must be able to read the large sign that reads, ORDER FOOD HERE! Take a number and they bring you food. You can also order food and beer at
The bar,(you don't have to sit at the bar!) -
Review from Brandon M.
San Diego, CA
Only been a handful of times for a quick bite, and for the beer. Similar to Pizza Port, but has its own identity, Breakwater has a great variety of beers from IPAs to Lagers to Hefs. Some beers can be half pints if you want to try a bunch of beers without getting drunk or full too soon. This helps a lot when trying the beers with high alcoholic content.
I haven't tried their pizza yet, but I did get some appetizers. The Chicken Tenders are good. Not spectacular, but I feel like a restaurant will always have Chicken Tenders and if they get them wrong, that's a bad sign. Their Mozzarella sticks are delicious as well. I may be jaded as I always try these two appetizers at all restaurants before I try their Entrees. Similar to how I try rolled tacos at every Mexican restaurant. If they mess up rolled tacos, they're more than likely a bad restaurant!
The service was fantastic, especially the bartenders. Very laid back, and never "douchie" or rude. Sure, some people will say "it's their job to be nice", but it seems like these days that is lacking. -

This is just a beer review, because breweries need more beer reviews.
Breakwater looks like your typical beachy pizza parlor brewery, surfboards hanging, epic surfing pictures and large brewery signs. The brewery seems like a popular hangout for the local Camp Pendleton marines who make for the best beer company. They are always courteous and curious about beer.
So I purchased my best beer flight ever. For 5 dollars, I got to 6 beers, given each taster was like 3 ounces, but still absolutely worth it.
Beach Honey Ale. Definitely the one of the best honey ales in SD. Most honey ales are too sweet without any distinct flavor. This ale starts a bit sweet and ends with a smooth with ale finish.
Strand Stout - Irish style dry stout - I love oatmeal stouts, but this Strand stout was neither very creamy or oatmeally (what ever that Samuel Smith flavor is) enough for me.
Beachbreak Brown - Good brown with non bitter hops. The hops leave a crisp yet hoppy finish.
Rasbiscus Mead - honey wine - From one anti wine drinker to another, order this drink. Order it just to see its blood red color and to have the satisfaction of drinking like a Viking. The drink is 10%, so it is served in 1/2 pint glass. The marines even tried it and said, "I hate girly drinks, but this I like."
So it tastes like sangria, except better. It is not as sweet as sangria and has an extra herbal flavor.
Amalgamation - An unusual beer, sour like a gnarly wine. Not for me, but it was interesting.
Old Blue Eyes - Oaky flavor that was not overpowering like other barrel aged ales. I enjoyed the flavor until the bitter tannin (earthy?) aftertaste slapped me in the face. To be enjoyed in small amounts.
If you do not like their house brews, they have an excellent microbrewery tap (Stone, Karl and Russian River). Even for the beer haters, Breakwater can be appeased with Rasbiscus Mead. I do not anything about their food, but if their pizzas are half as good as their beer, stop by Break Water for good company and beer. -

We've been here a few times now. Always impressed by their selection of beer (no, it's not Pizza Port, but I don't really get the feeling they're "trying" to be either), the ones they make as well as the guest brews.
Pitchers are a fair price.
Pizza & other options are tasty, nothing out of control or unexpected price-wise. Super easy to access by public transport too, a block from the Amtrak/Coaster/Sprinter station! Day at beach followed by beers and then the train back home. -

Beers are cold and tasty. Service is good to. My complaint is the food. Prices are extremely high for the quality imo.
I like the dmj ipa the best. When I do eat here I usually get some sort of panini or the wings. -

Pizza and beer places are a pretty common staple these days. With Breakwater, they've got nice atmosphere and great pizza at good prices. They also have various gems on the menu. They had a potato soup I had a while back that was delicious. What I like the most Is that the price range is pretty modest. I've been to Pizza Port and Lampost and other such expensive pizza places.

This review is purely on the Rasbiscus Mead. You want a dry, sparkling raspberry honey mead in your warm mouth?!? Yeah you do!! 10% of goodness.... One 8oz glass and you are getting chill...two glasses...and you want a growler of this stuff!! I wish they did that for this mead...
Its like a light, semi sweet cider.
The food was 'meh.
I think this place should really focus more on the brewery aspect to attract more people.Listed in: Beer Snob

Another one of our go tos in Oceanside. Typically busy but we haven't ever really had to wait for seating. Their beer selection is fantastic.. ranging from house brews to the not so commonly seen micro brews of Stone, Avery, Russian River and more.
The Dau is the best pizza ever! it's a spicy must try! Also a big fan of their Meatball panini.
Great casual and fun place (with games in the back for kids) -
Review from Sandya N.
ugh, just when i thought pizza couldn't be bad, breakwater brewing proves me wrong! this may be the worst pizza i've ever had. it smelled great like yummy pizza, and it looked like it would be tasty... however, it tasted like "essence of pizza". it's like mcdonald's opened up shop and created a chemical-infused pizza-esque version of what a real pie should be. the crust tasted like... nothing. the sauce was non-existent. the cheese tasted like salt and essence of cheese. where the hell is the flavor?!? it left me desperately wanting a REAL slice with some TASTE. highly disappointing, and it makes me wonder what kind of crappy ingredients they're using to make these pies. clearly the savings aren't passed on to you, lovely diner, because these pizzas are expensive!
the stars are for the somewhat friendly service and the good beer selection. but the pizza? i'd give it negative stars if it were possible! -

Fantastic! Great find with good pizza and a really excellent brown ale. It's a bar, so don't expect too much out of the service or creature comforts. I'll definitely be back!
UPDATE:
I went back, and tried some of their other brews... not so good. Stick with the brown ale and pizza! -

Great wings and sandwiches, awesome TVs, good beer, decent pizza. If only their pizza was a little better this place would be 5 stars. It's exactly what I wish Pizza Port was, smaller, not a million kids running around, cool bartenders, and actual TVs to watch sports! But yeah, the pizza leaves something to be desired.

Pasadena, Los Angeles, CA
Breakwater has the best beer selection in Oceanside. Similar to Pizza Port in that they brew several of there own tasty brews as well as pour many guest beers too. The bartenders are all cool with the exception of Britney. She is just plain rude and acts like she is too cool to pour beer. Tim is very knowledgable and willing to help you find a beer you'll love. The chicken wings are great. Ask for them twice baked and they will be extra crispy. Pizza is good too.

Your there to drink and have a good time so don't expect them to wait on you hand and foot. No one likes annoying drunk people but they will make sure you have a good time. Great attitudes, simple badgery, free samples, and never heard of any brawls....lately. Perfectly in the range of a broke college student. The average age is usually late 20's. Families do come in so the place is a lot cleaner then a dive bar. I took a group of 10 and we all had a blast.

Not sure where all these negative reviews are coming from. My husband and I have been here several times now. We LOVE the pizza and love the beer. My personal favorite is the rassbiscus mead! Yum! As for pizza, we've tried a different kind every time we come and have never been disappointed. We drive all the way from Escondido just to enjoy the delicious pizza and beer :) We introduce our friends to this place every chance we get. So if you haven't yet, give this place a try. If you have and weren't satisfied, try it again.

My lovely wife and I stopped here a few times in the last week. Very good selection of house and guest beers. The house beers were some of the most unusual that I have ever had especially the Kali Kush. The service was good and the food was typical pub fare. As far as food goes I recommend the rib tips with the atomic sauce.

Alright the good first. . . I had some chicken strips to eat. They were pretty tasty, nothing off the chart, just your standard bar chicken strips.
Now on to why I felt compelled to write this review. I'll admit I'm a beer snob, but hey who from Oregon isn't? I ordered one of their IPA's and I asked the girl at the bar what the IBU of the beer was, she had no clue what that even meant. When I informed her what it meant she was fairly rude and just dismissed it. Now maybe I'm just an ass, but I think if your job is serving beer at a brewery you should have knowledge of the product you're selling.
This place needs to stop worrying about having good looking girls slinging beer and get some real knowledgeable bartenders... or better yet, good looking girls who know the beer. -

Wow, while looking for a place to take my out of town guests tonight for a good beer, I decided to read some of the reviews, just to see if maybe service had improved since my friend amd I were there LAST SUMMER.
I see it has not. The first & last time I was were, it was not a warm feeling.. The workers look at me as if. I shd of enter thru the back door enstead of the front door & to make me feel even less welcome I was with a long time Ex-Navy friend, who happen to be White. I'm a Black ret-Navy & a business owner at the time, female. For almost an hour we waited for someone to serve us. The whole time watching them completely
I'm thinking it's a racial thing, I was the only Black, which I'm use to, but that day I just wanted to get out of there as fast as I can, but my friend insisted we stay. When the waitress finally got to our table, took our order, no conversation, no smile....nothing!
We both had a salad and beer. Can't go wrong with that. I wrote this review in hopes the management there will see how important it is to make your Guests feel welcome, just a smile or hello, that's all. I've nevetr recommended the place, but on the same note I've not bashed it either. -
Review from Scott P.
My family decided they wanted to try a place that had tables near the Sunset Market, so we ended up here. I was pleasantly surprised.
When you walk in, the counter is there so you can read the menu and then order. Since it was packed inside, we decided to find a table outside which was nice since they had a TV out on the patio. Super casual location.
They give you a number after ordering and bring the food to your table. There is a separate beer line, so that's a great touch so there isn't any one area that's over crowded. Wait staff was really friendly as well as the patrons. Seemed like a great sign for us.
The first thing we decided on was the Shrimp Po'boy pizza (not really but my family didn't specify pizza or sandwich as I was expecting a sandwich). Pizza was good. Thin crust with shrimp, basil, mozzarella cheese and a Cajun butter sauce. I'm glad we got the pizza to be honest.
Next were the Pulled Pork sliders. Nice, tangy BBQ sauce with a homemade sweet 'slaw, on toasted Hawaiian rolls. Very tasty. They were perfectly balanced with the sweet to tangy ratio as well as having great pork. A must have if on the menu as they were special that night.
We finished with the baked wings. We got an order of Buffalo and an order of Honey Chipotle. The Buffalo had a nice spicing to them with a heat that layered after each bite just the way I like. The Honey Chipotle made an awesome sweet crust on the chicken that added a touch of sweetness without overpowering the chicken. These are my new favorite wing now.
Beer. We tried their house stout which may be the creamiest, lightest stout I've ever had. I liked it better than Guinness to be honest. We also tried their house amber. I thought we were getting the brown ale, but it was definitely an amber. Very tasty none the less, and actually went better with the food I ordered anyway.
For a cool place with good pizza, friendly service and good beer, this is the place. -

Carlsbad, CA
So deciding on a rating for this restaurant was very difficult for me as I really enjoy their beer, beer selection, boneless buffalo wings, but think their pizza and more often than not the services is just so so.
I will discuss the beer first as it truly is great and they have a wide variety of beers on tap giving you a full array of beers. The boneless buffalo wings are superb with enough kick for me to enjoy the spiciness, but not too much that I can't taste anything after I eat them.
Now to talk about the pizza. The pizza is why I am giving them only 3 stars as I believe that while it is a brewery, PIZZA is their STAPLE food here and they don't do a great job on it. The pizza is always decent, but several times it has been super hard and crispy crust with the a doughy center. Not cool.
The pizza is always edible, but is that really what you want when you pay $10 or more for a pizza??? To say that it is edible?
Also the service is just so so like I said earlier. They have never done anything horrible, but neither have they gone above and beyond and done anything spectacular.
Therefore to me it all evens out in the end to a solid 3 star rating. Its a good place to go, but not great.Listed in: Pizza

Horrible Horrible service.
Walk up to the counter and order type establishment.
So unfriendly it was rude... they acted like we walked in their home and ordered beer and food.
The beer was good. Bar food, would not consider a restaurant by any means. Pizza and fried food that was just ok. A hooters menu would have been awesome! Their wings were gross... soft slimy skin. eh
They hold your credit card when you order even though we were seated at a table with our kids. We paid cash for our food and never gave back our credit card had to pick it up a few days later.
This place is awesome location good beer cool building but wow!!!!!! Horrible vibe in there too bad wont come back! Too bad good potential. -
Review from Monica D.
First stop of the infamous Barley Bandits Bus Tour! I guess you can't go wrong beer and food sampling with like 20 or so of your closest drinking companions.
The owners, Shannon and Mike(?), were kind enough to get the ball rolling for us BEFORE opening time. Accommodating 50ish beer snobs desperately hungry for beers and foodstuffs can't be an easy task, but eventually things were figured out -- pitchers of their own brews to go around, with a taster glass for each person, and a varied selection of finger food and pizzas to whet our empty tummies.
First of all the place is beautiful. All windows, very clean and organized, with that awesome "hey this is a beach town's joint" feel to it. Second of all, we all managed to snag tables and seats right away. A gigantic wave of awesomeness came over me as I spied my dearest beer friends all laughing, drinking, eating, and having a generally great time -- Spence, Steve-O, the Three Wise Men, Gale, Nyssa, Colleen and Greggers, my bro Alvin D., Bonofide, Harry, Cindy, Pat and Lori, Kim and Doc Alan, Chucky and T, my lil bro Greggers (ugh now there were two of them) and of course my Weekday Boyfriend, among all the other non-fun-hating bus patrons -- and it was a sight to behold!
Now onto the goods. I definitely enjoyed the hisbiscus (Risbiscus? What?) mead and its beer-ier counterpart. The double IPA was also really smooth and drinkable. As one of our bus people pointed out, the pale ale definitely had a different type of tea-like hop flavor to it, which was delicious was certainly unique. I also really dug the red ale and even the beach honey, which was the lightest of them all. However, for some reason I was not a huge fan of the regular IPA. Boooo. It just seemed too simple and not hoppy enough for my liking.
The food was also incredible -- a crust thin enough to be sort of like NYC pizza, but thick enough to hold up the fresh toppings. The pepperoni was DIVINE and those who held court with the veggies works really enjoyed it as well. The garlic parm breadsticks were nice and fresh, and the breakfast pizzas (one ham and eggs, the other sausage and jalapeno -- both SO fresh out of the oven hot and SO delish!) were amazing! But I think the highlight of the food items was really the rib tips in various sauces. I remember trying the bbq sauce, the teriyaki style, and the buffalo variety -- and just being BLOWN AWAY by every kind! Definitely impressed with the food overall.
I would love to come back to Breakwater -- although I still prefer Pizza Port pizza and beer in general, I really like the vibe of this joint and the service was top notch to boot! Thank you so much Shannon, Mike (?), and the Breakwater staff for putting up with our craziness!
