I am very torn about what review to give for this place. I have stayed in the Deluxe corner rooms a few times. We first started visiting in 2005 and it was lovely. It seems with time that they have not put too much money into keeping it as amazing as our first visit. I sometimes could hear the neighbors or the people above us walking around. The deluxe corner rooms have gone from a 5 star to a 4 star in the last 4 years.
Now the reason for the final rating. I was married in Gualala in 2006. On my wedding night I stayed in the Japan room. We paid over $300 a night. (They have since lowered their prices.) We chose the room for the private spa tub by the window with a romantic view. There was a small PATH outside our window that the construction workers were using! People walking outside our jacuzzi window!! There was no way we could bath in the morning or during the day. And I was concerned that even at night someone could just walk up and look in our window. The room was also very noisy. We could hear every flush or shower that was taken in the room(s) above us. I would give the Japan room experience as low a rating that I could.
So in the end that is why I gave Breakers three stars. I have had numerous 4 star experiences but the 1 star wedding night weighs heavy on my opinion.
I agree with prior reviews. We hadn't stayed here before, but it looks like it's seen better days. I planned our vacation as our 'babymoon' and my husband's 40th bday weekend. When I called for reservations, we got what she called "the best room" (the Denmark). The little things weren't so bad- like the broken curtain pulls and the missing shower door handles. We were a bit irked by the unreliable WiFi. (Google even warned that it couldn't run well at that poor connection speed.)
The worst, though was that in this "best room" we were woken by the surprisingly loud pipes whenever neighbors filled their jacuzzi bathtub. I guess we wouldn't have been so upset, if the manager hadn't said, basically, sorry, but that's how the room is. I spoke with the manager "Rachel" and of course nothing could be done. She even came to our room and verified how loud the running water was. She offered us lesser rooms, but not a lesser price and never did more than say there wasn't much she could do.
I DEFINITELY would not stay here again. I was so disappointed especially since this was suppose to be a special occasion and there are nicer places near by. Also- they've stopped the complimentary champagne.
You can visiblity see the cutbacks in maintenance and housekeeping, at once was probably a reel nice place.
We stayed in the Japan room. Spider webs in some corners of the room, Broken shower door handle on the inside, sink drain slow in the bathroom, toliet was disgusting under the rim(2 incheds down and still black), just not what you would expect for a room at this price.
Breakers Inn is a wonderful little hotel situated on the beach in the little town of Gualala (pronounced wah-LA-la). Most rooms have a direct view of the ocean, and include a nice sun deck for chilling out and an in-room jacuzzi. Rooms avg about $220/night for a non-holiday, summer wknd rate. Rooms are clean and have a nice "mendocino" rustic feel to them.
Patrons are greeted with a complimentary bottle of champagne and wine. the premise is nicely decorated with running water fountains and plenty of flowers and colorful landscaping.
Breakers Inn is within walking distance of many forest and beach trails.
minor gripes....
* use of jacuzzis are prohibited after 9pm
* rooms do not have CD players
* rooms do not have DVD players, but one can rent one for $5
* newspapers are not delivered to front door, but are available at front desk
* decks are furnished with cheap, plastic furniture... and lack an umbrella for shade
the town of Gualala has many art galleries, restaurants, spas and other "small town" shops. one can easily spend a day walking, shopping or basically do nothing. Think Carmel, but smaller and less commercial.

Romantic with a beautiful view from every room. We've visited twice, the first time we got a regular ocean view room, the next time we got the next step up and it didn't seem all that much better. So I say go with a regular room or splurge on one of the theme rooms. We used to go to Gualala to relax and read and basically do nothing but enjoy the scenery and eat good food. Now we tend to take vacations that are a little more hectic and you feel like you need to sleep for days afterwards. Gualala, and Breakers Inn, are for peace and quiet.

It was a nice romantic place to stay - a little pricey. We stayed in one of the deluxe oceanfront rooms. The theme was nice, and I really enjoyed the thick (twin) quilt/comforter (my husband had his own on his side of the king bed. They gave us a complimentary half-size bottle of sparkling wine. It was nice to hear the ocean and there was good view from our deck. The surroundings are nicely landscaped with flowers and fountains - we saw hummingbirds and a bunny rabbit on the grounds. The lobby had a nice selection of teas and airpots of coffee/hot water out. It's open til nine with complimentary glasses of port for guests. We enjoyed our stay and if we're back in Gualala, we'll probably be back.
