4 reviews for Breakers Hotel & Restaurant
Spring Lake, NJ is a quiet serene beach town in the middle of spiky hair, gold chain & wifebeater T wearing guido magnets like Belmar and Point Pleasant. It's like if there was a middle Spears child between Britney and Jaime-Lynn, and she was a normal college student who had managed not to get pregnant.
It's also full of old people, and I mean REALLY old people. Don't come here for the scene, come here for peace and quiet. And if you are going to say in Spring Lake, you should probably stay at The Breakers.
The hotel overall is pretty nice, rooms are good sized with full and partial beach views available. The beds are also really comfortable, I meant to ask what brand the mattresses were before I left. There's also a pool with plenty of beach chairs around it if you don't feel like making the 50 foot walk across the street to the beach for your sunning needs. One tip though, I wouldn't order the food they have available by the beach. I'm not sure how you screw up stuff like a turkey club or grilled cheese, but this was not so good.
But what's really surprising about this hotel is that they have a great restaurant attached. Not just good for a hotel restaurant, but good period. If you're staying in the area and want a good meal, the restaurant is always open to the public (reservations are absolutely necessary, particularly during the peak season).
The food is pretty standard Italian, for appetizers we had a mesclun salad and baked artichokes topped with fresh mozzarella (awesome). For dinner I had really good lobster ravioli that was topped with an awesome fresh tomato sauce. Desserts were solid but nothing spectacular.
I came down here for a night to meet up with family who was there for the week. If you're looking to get away from the city and just want a quiet hotel with good food in house, The Breakers is great. It gets 3 stars from me because the hotel is nice, but they're charging more than they're worth. Plus, I can only see so many very old people when I'm at the beach. Good for them that they're still having fun, but it gets to be too much.

Great location--nice old Victorian hotel right on the water. Service was spotty--front desk was nice but restaurant hostess not so much. My room was nice, though not luxrious. They do seem to have issues with credit cards--they don't like them for your deposit and warn against ATM cards as well. Strange and inconvenient. We were VERY disappointed that the lovely veranda was torn up both days we were there. This was no small thing, as it is one of the main features of the hotel--it is the spot for sitting with a cocktail and looking at the ocean. Instead, we had construction noise. Why didn't they do this during the winter? A major drag, this was.
My brother got married here in May 2008. Even though it rained on his wedding day, the hotel was very accommodating and the ceremony inside was just as beautiful as it would have been on the deck. Food was great, service was quick and friendly, and my brother and his new wife said that the rooms are beautiful.
My husband and I spent a weekend at the Breakers in what I think was the bridal suite. I remember the largest Jacuzzi I had ever seen, and that was a treat! The Breakers is directly across the street from the Spring Lake beach, and the view we had was gorgeous.
But, foodie that I am, I thought that the most outstanding thing about the Breakers was its restaurant. It's Italian food, and it's delicious. Reservations are probably necessary in summer (we were there in January, and there was still a good-sized crowd there).
