This little record store in the east village run by DJ Dara et al, services the 12" vinyl needs of primarily the jungle, drum'n'bass & breakbeat community.

I haven't been here in a couple of years but I remember my visit to BBS very fondly. I was trying to figger out some micro-genre I'd read about in a music nerd magazine and the kind folks at BBS gave me my own personal tutorial, playing different records for me and explaining the nuances. Very cool.

Since DJs Dara and Sean Shooter opened its doors in '97, Breakbeat Science has been recognized as America's Princely Purveyor of all things Drum-and-Bass. The proof is in their collection of Polaroid snapshots taken of the many heavy-weight UK Junglists who rolled through the store while visiting NYC.

Although Science's heyday was in the mid - late '90's, the record-shopping experience at the store is still a good one. 12" imports decorate the walls, CD's are displayed up front next to relevant zines and the staff is comprised of a very knowedgeable bunch. Faithfully committed to drum-and-bass, BBS also lightly flirts with vinyls of related genres: Breaks, Tech-step and at one point, 2step/Grime. With 5 public turntables, an orderly display of records and well-organized bins, the shopper is afforded a satisfying sense of self-service.

The alleged death of drum-and-bass + explosion of mp3 technology has encouraged the conceptual evolution of Breakbeat Science - no longer just a record store, they are attempting to market a lifestyle. Featured throughout the front of the store and for purchase are old school hip-hop novelties and books on design.

Another classic record shop which I've bought countless amount of wax from. When visiting NYC I had to check it out. I've always ordered via the internet so I wanted to see this place in person. Anyhow to my surprise it was a really small record shop. It was cool I sort of did not dig what was out in the bins but then again I do understand their internet store is probably a huge portion of their business. I still enjoy this spot regardless.

From the little precious closet on East 9th St, to the neon lab-like store on the Lower East Side, to a hidden speakeasy in the back of a trendy clothing store, Breakbeat Science has seen some serious evolution and relocation over the years. These were the days before Juno and Chemical, before the online stores dominated the market. BBS was the first and only all drum n bass record store NYC ever boasted on its endless roster of vinyl shops. It wasn't just a spot to listen to stacks and stacks of tunes, but a place to network with other junglists and promoters, and frequently run into a barrage of international dnb legends, who sometimes rocked the in-store decks. Although I eventually made the online switch like every other DJ from here to Toyko, I never really adjusted to the absence of physical record shopping in my life.  I went to the sad little store that contains Breakbeat in a hidden closet a few months ago, only to find that the store itself is now closed. As we all move toward an increasingly computer-based lifestyle, it probably makes sense for them to focus on their online sales. But trust me when I say that Breakbeat Science was the bassjunky sanctuary, and for that BBS, you get FIVE basstastic stars.
