I adore this place!!!
Being gluten free has changed my life. Sometimes it gets frustrating. But having cute little bakeries to go to when I am too lazy to make something myself...well. I don't know what I would do without Breakaway.
Delicious everything. I especially love the muffins - coffee cake anyone? There are so many good things here...thin mints, cupcakes, brownies, lemon bars (also another favorite). Breakaway also has items for my boyfriend who is vegan (they recently just added a vegan cupcake to the menu!).
If you have not tried the chocolate cranberry oatmeal cookies, go there NOW and buy one...and then 10 more. They are vegan as well for all you vegans out there.
I love the baked goods. I love the prices The owner is lovely. I wish the hours were a little more regular and I would be in there...well, a lot. -

Just had birthday for my sister. Everyone needed something different one guest was vegan, one needed gluten free so Break away bakery made me a delicious chocolate cake that was moist and tasty and beautiful and everyone enjoyed it. It tastes like the best "normal cake" actually I think the taste is better. Thank you break away bakery for making all my guests super happy.

Janice is awesome!
Everyone should support this local place as much as possible so they can open more hours and sell more goodies :) -

This is hands down the best gluten free bakery in the greater Los Angeles area. She uses organic ingredients and no gums, the same sort of ingredients I would use at home, BUT she's a waaaaay better baker than I am! The owner is super sweet too.
Gluten, dairy, peanut, tree nut* & soy* free options abound & there are even several egg* free options as well. *They use Bob's Red Mill flours which are made in the same facility as tree nut & soy products so if you have a life threatening allergy to even trace amounts it might be best to avoid. We are very soy sensitive & we don't use Bob's Red Mill at home at all but we have not noticed any reactions after eating baked goods at Breakaway. They do use eggs in the bakery but at least keep the vegan/egg free items under a separate glass container away from the items that do contain egg. Most items have a rice flour base but they do use oats in some items so do ask about ingredients if you're sensitive to oats.
The prices are incredibly reasonable for the high end GF pastries, breads & drinks. I don't live near the bakery at all so I really stock up every time I am there & I usually end up spending about $30 for a hefty bag of baked goods. I love, love, love that I can get an organic chai with rice milk & honey or a rice milk based hot chocolate while I'm there.
Some of my favorites: thin mints, oatmeal cranberry chocolate chip cookies, pizza crust (we use it as flat bread usually), fig rolls (AMAZING!), chocolate chip mandels. But try it all. I haven't been disappointed by anything yet.
The hours are a bit erratic & they are closed for Jewish holidays so call ahead if you don't want to be one sad GF gentile showing up at their door during Yom Kippur. If it is a weekday & they are in the bakery they will open the door & sell you some goodies even if they are technically closed so it's worth it to make the call. But again, if it's a holiday you are out of luck. -

So glad Yelp directed me to this beautiful bakery. Wanted to check it out, however ended up buying lots of perfect little treats. A lot of vegan and organic treats. She also sells batter mix. I might try the pancake or cupcakes mix. The lady who attended me, I believe must have been the owner. She was the patient and sweetest lady I have ever encountered with. I love supporting local businesses. I will absolutely be coming back.

When I first heard about Breakaway,I thought: "Wait-- even the HIDDEN reviews are 5 *'s?! No way." YES WAY!! Honestly, it's a tough call what I liked better-- the fact that my guy and I could sit down at a cafe enjoying food together, or the fact that after a ridiculously delicious hot chocolate, a great cup of coffee, 8 pastries and a cupcake the bill came to only TWELVE DOLLARS!! Ok, I'm going to stop caps-yelling at you now. Just fan me a little, because I'm still that excited! Thing is, my starchaholic is just as excited to return, and he doesn't like gluten free stuff!
This tiny little bakery was the first part of a "date day" (the second consisted of us consuming some of the aforementioned pastries at a drive-in!!) . Parking off of the main street was easily done. Everything was delicious, if occasionally a teensy bit on the dry side--easily alleviated with their delicious drinks! I'm looking forward to going back--hopefully by then they'll have some cold drinks like iced tea on their menu. The very VERY BEST PART (sorry, wasn't going to do that) was the after-effect: no heavyness, no chemical taste, loads of energy! Granted, that energy may have been sugar-high... went back for some of their "bagels". They're more like "goybles" , but bagel or no, more delicious rolls-with-holes were never found--and only $3 for 4!! Crazytalk.
I knew I had to check this place out, if only to break their lucky streak..but NO!! 5 stars from me too!! -

We ordered cupcakes for a Bachelorette Party and they were delicious. While picking them up we also got a yummy raspberry scone and a lemon blueberry muffin along with a loaf of Challah. The staff was amazingly friendly ... even providing suggestions on how to cook the challah as french toast. Will definitely be back the next time in in LA.
For those with food issues, they only use a rice flour blend and do not add any gums to their dough. And, yes, it's all still light & fluffy!
Amazing! -

I love this place, and am so glad I found it. The regular loaf of bread is amazing and still tastes great after being in the fridge for a week (It's gone before a whole week rolls around). Their cookies and cupcakes are just like the real thing, except I don't feel like crap after eating them.

I can't tell you how thrilled I was to learn that Breakaway Bakery is practically within walking distance of my pad! Being a gluten intolerant chica, I get all warm and fuzzy inside when I hear of new places...and...not only is ALL of their stuff GF...it's Soy free too! Oh joy oh joy...damn that soy allergy. I always forget to ask if GF stuff is without soy only to get home and find I can't eat it. Grr. So this makes me delighted.
LOVE the orange cranberry scones and in fact, planning on getting the mix to go so that I can bake 'em up fresh at home!
The thin mint-esque cookies are TO DIE FOR if you crave those Girl Scout Cookies that are now a gluten no no!
I'm definitely going to make it a weekly habit to check out the bakery and stock up all on things yummy....love that they have not only the freshly made items but also the aforementioned frozen goods (muffin mix, cookies, brownies, scones...HEAVEN!).
Easy to park, friendly staff, open Wed/Thurs/Fri and Sun...just hope they open on more days soon! :) -

It's so exciting to see more gluten-free establishments popping up all over town! This stretch of Pico is pretty interesting and worth a couple hours worth of wandering if you have the time. Little gems like the Breakaway Bakery and other boutiques are interspersed with your typical Pico Boulevard auto repair places and such.
I stopped by Breakaway yesterday with a friend of mine and the two of us had such a hard time deciding which cookies to get, we got six and split all of them. The proprietor was incredibly amicable and she took the time to explain to us what the ingredients were. All of the goodies are casein-free as well as gluten-free, which is great news for those of us who can't tolerate cow dairy. Additionally, she does not use guar gum or xanthan gum; instead, she uses pumpkin and banana to make sure the dough holds together.
I highly recommend the Lil' Chocolate Mint Scouties and the Apricot Pinches. Very tasty. I'll bet you could do a blind taste test alongside products that contained gluten and no one would be able to tell these were gluten-free. Further proof that absence of gluten does not mean absence of flavor! We Americans just need to break away from our wheat-loving comfort zone...Listed in: Gluten-Free in LA

Very cute store, a real bakery. A lot of effort for all those shapes and sizes of cookies, different flavors and tasty bites. I fell for this place first time I visited. I visit for take-outs mostly, because my wallet would not allow me to stay :). I'm a big fan of cookies, and this place is a spot not to miss.

I friend of mine brought me a large "sample" box of goodies (I think 1-2 of everything in the bakery), and EVERYTHING was delicious!! I have been soy free for a while and have wavered back and forth with being gluten free, so I know how difficult it is to find GOOD tasting baked goods- VERY difficult! Now I know where to go BREAKAWAY BAKERY!! I wish you much success, I know your bakery will blow-up and be the new "IT SPOT" in town! Thank you for your hard work!

Breakaway Bakery is a brand new option for people with diet sensitivities. It opened 5 weeks ago on Pico (a few blocks east of Hauser), right across from City Best Chicken. A blog reader told me I should check this bakery out and do a review - I'm not even gluten free!
I love the story behind the bakery's inception - Janice (the owner) is one of the sweetest women you'll ever meet, and the place has a very cozy + intimate neighborhood vibe. EVERYTHING is allergen-free, kosher - and virtually all organic! They've started making a few vegan products, too. Aside from the freshly-made treats (baked the same morning), you can pick up frozen batters to bring home. They also sell all the materials one would need to recreate the Breakaway Bakery experience back at home.
Coffees and teas are fair-trade and organic. I had a cup of decaf Cinnamon Plum with my treats! First, a lemon raisin scone, which was perfectly sweetened, followed by a Coffee Cake Muffin (which you can buy the frozen batter for) - this one needed some fork help but I still finished every last crumb.
My absolute faaaavorite was Janice's take on the Thin Mint - in fact, I liked it MORE than the Girl Scout version! The flavor was spot-on, but chewier. And a little bit bigger :)
You would think I'd feel bloated, tired, and gross after eating a scone, muffin, and cookie for brunch - but I actually felt great! I brought home a box of samples to share with my husband, who was also impressed with the quality - hard to believe they are allergen-free, with no transfats. One big difference between Janice and other gluten-free bakers is she don't use gums (like xanthum or guar) which can produce an artificial mouthfeel. These just taste delicious, and the texture is pretty comparable to regular pastries. -

I love this place. Great quality and creativity in their cookies. Quite a lot of options for you to pick from, and all priced so your wallet doesn't feel a thing. They are very friendly and very helpful with your choice. I recommend visting them if you are in the hood.

There aren't any gluten-free bakeries in LA and none that get it right like Breakaway does. Their pastries are light and fluffy and the price is just astounding. Plus, they seem to be catering to my sweet tooth, which is a good thing! I ordered a dozen chocolate chip cookies, and a loaf of bread. Though my friends and I devoured the cookies nearly right away (which were delicious by the way),the loaf of bread, unlike other gluten-free loaves, seemed to last twice as long! Without the characteristic second day hardness that most get.
For those of you out there who have dietary and allergy problems, like me, you should know they use all rice flowers in all of their pastries and breads. And they don't use any nuts, or soy! This place is a true gem and I am glad that I found it. Next time I'm probably going to have them deliver some of their frozen batter so I can have their cookies whenever I want! -

What a find. I haven't been able to eat bread, cookies, or anything with wheat in it for decades. I now remember how good baked goods can be. The staff is super helpful and friendly. Do yourself a favor and try this place.

Tastes great. Better than great, this is fine baking without gluten, dairy and other allergens. Go there. Take a cooler (to keep the frozen doughs in) and your mint thins in. My husband is not celiac, but said that the mint thins were fantastic. He loved the raspberry and cranberry crumble squares. But the true test is the brownie for him. It was a 10+, soft, moist, full of flavor. And, he felt that he was eating something healthy and delicious. I loved everything. Support this wonderful store, help them stay financially healthy while keeping our taste buds happy and ourselves healthy! I plan to go once a month to stock up. The reviews are for reals!

Charming and delightful. I went here this morning as soon as they opened, with my gluten free friend Melissa, and they had plenty of things to choose from. I am vegan and they had 3 different kinds of treats for me as well. The coffee was delicious, and it's nice that they open so early on Fridays, since most of the places in our neighborhood open at 9. That extra half hour helps. Good work ladies! I will stop in again and definitely bring on the vegan stuff. :)

I really love this bakery but to be open only two days a week is pretty annoying. I used to love taking my kid here on Sunday mornings and now you're not even open on Sundays?! Sunday mornings were invested for bakeries. Bummer.

when i first discovered this place i was walking down pico about to go into fred"s for a haircut, i saw someone walk out with a brownie and my stomach growled. i am not gluten free- i dont mind if things are organic, and i really don't mind things with nuts or eggs. but all this said, to those of you who do need/want those requirements this place has Great Food. Great location. good prices. .. o and one last thing to add,i spent about 5 minutes looking inside (while eating) next thing i know, i am picking out which tea to get (side note: i am not much of a tea drinker) lots of rare tea's,and rich baked goods. my favorite thing is the cranberry oatmeal chocolate chip cookie._

These are the most delicious gluten-free treats. I love this place. The mint scouties, fruit bars, and oatmeal cookies are some of my favorites. Plus I love the fact that I can take get a bucket of dough, freeze it, then scoop out a couple of tablespoonfuls and bake at my leisure.

This place is an organic, gluten free dream! First you enter the lovely little space and are warmly greeted (aaah remember the days of warm greetings and great customer service almost everywhere you went.) Then it is on to the wonderful treats. I tried many different ones and everything was delish but the thin mints and orange candied brownie stood out especially. I had to remind myself these were gluten free, dairy free treats and that's when I almost shed a joyful tear. Love and care goes into everything here...even the way the owner packs your goodies. My only words of advice for the owners are they better brace themselves. It wasn't very busy when I went because it is new and the word hasn't really gotten out yet but when it does they better prepare for lines out the door.
