One of the best best best restaurants and food I have ever eaten! The owner and chef louie, is awesome! I mean how often in America do you have the owner of a restaurant come out and socialize with you at the table?! That is how intimate and friendly this restaurant and its owner is. Their ox tail and curried goat are to die for! Sooooooo good that it keeps us coming back every week! So excited we found this place in good ol stockton! Thanks Louie for sharing your amazing food with us! We shall be there tomorrow! :)

Have been going here for a while.  It is literally in the middle of nowhere.  For fun take your first date here for dinner without telling them why.  The look on their face as you leave the bright lights of 8 mile behind you headed into the dark unknown is priceless.

Once you get there the food rewards you.  The sangria is wonderful and if you like sweet try the swonk (an ice tea) I usually get the combination Peleau, a rice dish with bits of different meat.  The sweet - something fish is consistently cooked and the jerk pork is good if you like it a little spicy. A true gem in the Stockton area. Highly recommended.

Fantastic Caribbean BBQ!  This place packs on flavor in a relaxed atmosphere with great service.  The staff makes you feel very welcome as if they were expecting you all along (even if you don't make a reservation).

The restaurant has a very comfortable feel to it; the setting is super laid back, and the place really cools down at night with the breeze.

The food is delicious, the jerk chicken is always a winner!

"Toto, I don't think we're in Stockton anymore"

I LOVE how this place is hidden away and located right on the delta. The view is beautiful and there's always a nice fresh breeze.

The inside of the restaurant is pretty small and therefore kinda crowded.  There is lots of seating outside under cute gazebos and right by the Delta but it can get cold and maybe forgotten about by the staff.  The staff is friendly and explained the menu to my bf and I since neither of us had been there before.

We ordered the Combo Pelau ($12.95).  It's a Carribean fried rice dish with chicken, seafood and veggies.  Overall it was ok but no really strong flavors or anything too memorable.  However, the Belizan Pork Chops ($14.95) were delicioussssss!  The pork was moist and tender.  Plus, the gravy on top was perfect!  Definitely the star tonight!  Also, each meal comes with the house salad.  It's creamy, crunchy and I love the seasonings that they sprinkle on top!

Overall, the food is pretty good but I really love the atmosphere of the restaurant even though it gets loud.  There is a live band that sings the tunes of Bob Marley and adds to the whole Carribean vibe.  I recommend this spot to anyone who just wants to get away :)

    Tips:
Ask for the sweet and spicy sauces!  The sweet sauce was so amazingly good and paired well with the pork chops!

Eating in Stockton does not get any better than this! The jerk chicken is great, as are the pork and the goat!

But best of all is the atmosphere. The waiters and chef make you feel at home, it feels like they know you and love you and want to make you fat because it makes them happy. The murals on the walls are gorgeous, and the restaurant is tucked far enough away from town that feels like a special trip instead of just going out to dinner. Also, the road in with the potholes feels like a roller coaster ride or a developing country, so seat belt up and get ready for great food and sometimes live music!

The harsh cold is sometimes hard to bear in Stockton, I need a place to get out from these frigid temperatures. Ah yes... my cure, a small place out in the Delta called the Breadfruit Tree, my place to get away from it all and enter the warmth and energy that is the Caribbean.

I love coming here, the great food, atmosphere, it's a small part of the Caribbean in your friendly neighborhood Stockton. The people are charismatic and warm, which makes me come back here. It's not everyday you can talk to the head chef and talk about life. On the walls, murals  painted with beaches and trees. You get a sense of what they're trying to establish here... happy sunny times and grooving to the beats.

The food is great with flavors none like any other. Start off with the Peleau, a perfect appetizer before you start your meal. With it's flakey outside and warm insides make it the perfect combination. Before your meal comes a salad is served. What's interesting is the wasabi cracker balls mixed in with it. For you spicy lovers, the famous jerk chicken is the way to go. The flavors are flavorful with that spicy kick. The folks that can't handle spicy, I recommend the sweet chili fish. I'm not a big fan of fish, but it is absolutely my favorite fish dish of all time. The sweet flavors is addicting and makes you wonder if they put crack in the recipe.

On the table is a sweet chili sauce, which you can add to your meal. They make this themselves and can be taken home in it's very own bottle. Truthfully I wouldn't take it home because that's one of the reasons you need to keep coming back here. Don't ever try to imitate this food in your own kitchen. You will fail miserably.

Ah yes, Red Stripe... Yummmmm! Crispy, yet so satisfying. It's always a nice feel to order a famous Jamaican beer.  Or sometimes I'll go with the Caribbean soda... the cream soda. Yeah... that's the one.

The Caribbean? This place has influenced me to just hop on a plane and get the full experience that is the Caribbean.

I am so glad I tried this place. I was looking for Caribbean food and found this place so my husband and I ventured in to Stockton to try this place out. When we went I thought we were lost at first because it was way out there, but then we found it. I love the location, it was in such a fun spot. The menu was on a board since it is always changing. The owners were very nice and helpful in explaining the menu choices, since we are not familiar with a lot of Caribbean. I love the complimentary salad that comes out =) My husband ordered the oxtail and it was great. I have been craving it ever since. I ordered a rice plate which was also good. I cannot wait to go back and have another wonderful experience.

This place is still the best!!!! The food is continuously AMAZING.  And I realized that I need to find out where I can get a hold of some swonk for home.  If not, I may need to drive all the way here just to get my fix. Yes, it's that good.

(swonk is a sweet iced tea-like drink with a hint of mint...one of my all-time favorite drinks)

A nice little hideway on the Delta that is a stone's throw from Spanos Park.  I think its the only carribean food place in Stockton.  The food is delicious.  The jerk chicken is great, nice and spicy.  The pelau is my favorite.  Everything is pretty good, especially with the Delta view and a Red Stripe beer.  Service is very friendly, and the owner Louis is always cooking, serving, or sharing a story.  If you are in a rush, or need food fast, then this isn't the place for you  (its a small staff, small restaurant, and things back-up when they get busy).  A nice treat in any event.

The beautiful paintings on the walls enriched the quaint atmosphere and the friendly staff made me feel right at home.  The flavors are so rich and savory that it makes up for the limited menu. Unless you can handle EXTREME spice don't order the JERK options.
I would gladly eat here daily, with such reasonable prices and wonderful ambiance. It is right on the delta and feels so out of place in stockton, which is so refreshing! The sunset was gorgeous and the whole thing just felt so unreal in a good way!

I'm inclined to agree with Maureen G's review. I've heard friends talking about this place for a time before I moved away from Stockton 6 years ago and it was new. I finally had the chance to visit it this last weekend on a Friday night when visiting.

It's quite a drive out on the not very well maintained road of 8 mile, they don't take reservations and it's a short walk on the other side of a peer overlooking the delta where house boats are parked. So if you're coming here, there has to be premeditated plans, you won't just stumble into it ... unless of course you're renting a house boat on the delta.

The bathroom to note, is outside of the restaurant but surprisingly very well maintained and very clean.

Upon walking in I notice one woman rushing around to serve the tables. She looked generally well but a bit frazzled.

"That's the owner's wife," notes my girlfriend "the owner is the only cook and he enlisted her not too long ago; probably when it got too busy for him to do both."

I squinted to look at the "menu" when we first walked in, which is scrawled on a dry erase board and then faced at your table when you are seated.

The four of us ordered: braised oxtail with mushrooms, shrimp (two of us), and a combo peleau. The menu is changed regularly my friends inform me.

We started with the meatballs, which were decently good, but spongy in texture almost like pre-frozen meatballs. I'm not accusing that they were but they didn't taste all that fresh meaty to me, or like the meat was intensely processed. The bread served with it was good, so I dipped that in the overly sweet sauce, which balanced it better. It also had slices of onion.

The initial salad that is brought to the table consists of ice burg lettuce with Japanese cracker mix and gloppy ranch dressing. This was interesting, and was tasty to a point, but not my style of eating.

We were brought salads again by the 'owner's wife' and we joked with her that we'd already received ours to keep the mood light for her as she looked a little confused asking "I brought them, ME? Oh dear, oops, they must go over to the other table." She was so busy she genuinely didn't remember.

My girlfriend told me that it is a wonderful place to eat at during the summer as there is cooking outside and often a band as well. Well, we weren't in the summer yet and the evening was cold.

All of our dishes came with rice. The shrimp which I ordered also had an assortment of seafood; additionally squid, unknown fish, and tiny scallops. The rice was yellow and slightly buttery sweet. It was good, but the shrimp did not taste fresh.

I guess my expectations ran a little high when a friend explained that the owner goes out every morning to purchase what will be cooked in the evening.

I noted there wasn't really anything for a veggie person, less one dish. Even the vegetables in my dish consisted only of an occasional chunk of green bell pepper or a slice of red onion.

The oxtail was reported as phenomenal and my other friend didn't seem overly impressed with his rice combo. Everything to me just seemed to brimming with rice. And while the seasoning is different on the whole, it just seems like there is too much going on or not enough; like it isn't quite balanced.

I did realize that it took a while to get the food. And after my first beer, it was impossible to get another. We only got 3 waters, despite the 4 of us asking for one each. I really don't understand why they don't just get a little more help.

My girlfriend who also ordered the shrimp told me it didn't taste fresh to her either. Maybe it wasn't fresh, or maybe it was but over cooked. Either way, her and I didn't luck out on the meal that other reviewers seem to rave about.

For the price I'm not sure I'm really into going back and honestly I don't really understand the hype. But my mind logically tells me that the food must be seasoned for the mainstream to fit most pallets ... and that's why it stays popular.

I've just thought 'meh for this price I'll go somewhere else'. If I do go back again I'll keep my fingers crossed for better food (and I can always pray for faster but highly unlikely service).

All-in-all, if you want to try something new give this place a shot. But be prepared to wait, sometimes a long time, for your food or even your drinks. And don't come with any expectations.

Tucked away along the rivers of the San Joaquin valley lies this beautiful gem of a restaurant. Apparently we were lucky when we came in...since this place is family owned and operated, the owners close pretty much whenever they want. We came in around 7 and it seemed pretty slow. There was only one guy working as the cook, waiter, host, and cleaning guy. Unfortunately for him they ended up getting slammed and he had to call in extra family members to help out.

Despite all this, the food did not disappoint and it was worth every moment of anticipation. This place is unique in that the menu really is never set..there's always a few things in the whiteboard and they tend to change every few days so what you had on one night may not be the same thing they'll offer in a few nights after. I had the combo pelau with a rum coke and a sangria and topped it off with rum cake and bread pudding. Don't worry i'm not a fat ass, i shared this with my friends :) can't wait to try the next menu items!

This restaurant is tucked away by  the Delta off Eight Mile Road. They serve good Caribbean food. The service runs on island time, so expect everything to be slow. I suggest coming here before you get hungry because by the time your food comes out, you will be hungry.

I love the chicken peleau and the jerk chicken is good too. I love spicy food but boy, these entrees had a good helping of habaneros.

I like to come here in the summer and eat outside. It's refreshing to feel the Delta breeze while the listening to the live band. I believe the band performs on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Good food, nice owners, hidden location.

The first time I had the peleau was when it was catered at a formal event I attended. Although I liked it I didn't think to come back here since it's a little far out. I finally went back here, and my experience was a good one.

Had the chicken peleau and duck columbo. The peleau was great, and the duck was good too. Duck is usually really fatty, rough, and little meat, but this one was well-flavored, uniquely spiced, juicy and meaty. I also tried my friend's jerk chicken which was good too.

The atmosphere is nice too; right at the port so you have a nice view, outdoor seating, and a jazz guitar player to set the mood. My one complaint was the all bugs around at night since we were seated outside, but that has no bearing on their service.

I probably won't come here often since it's a little out of the way, but I look forward to eating here again, whenever that may be.

One of my fav restaurants of all times...i've been going there for years and love taking my friends out there...the menu changes daily meaning its fresh and exciting. If you have a special request call Louis ahead of time and he will make it happen. Great seafood, awesome rice dishes, and dont forget the rum punch. Small place and it can get very busy in the summer...attention to all customers and the small kitchen and limited staff is the only downfall

I've heard  about this place ever since I was a freshman at UOP. Now, 4 year later, I finally decided to embark on a journey down a road full of potholes, past a bunch of dirt and fields, to a little restaurant out on the water. It was a perfect evening for dinner outside.

First of all, menus. There were none! The woman working dragged out the chalk board with dishes written out for us to look and decide. It was quite cute actually. We settled on 4 dishes to share amongst the 4 of us. Best decision ever. I can't remember what 2 of the dishes were. We had a seafood peleau which was delicious. Jerk chicken, which was spicy and hot (just the way I like it). I know we had a fish dish. I can't remember what it was called. Anyhow, all the food was wonderful. It's hard for me to explain. So i'll explain it this way, you just gotta try it! The dishes range from $10-$15 each. And it's a slow place, because I believe it is just a husband and wife that run the show.

i was skeptical to plan a birthday dinner for 19 people at the breadfruit tree but it turned out wonderful and the service was great ! here are some tips because this place is definitely worth a visit in stockton.

    1. call chef Louie 2-3 days in advance for a large party. they aren't open on sunday nor monday.
    2. for a group of people, order family style ahead of time to avoid the wait. for $16.95/person this gives you the options of ordering 3 dishes. if you order a fish dish, it's $17.95/person. there is plenty of food so be ready to stuff your face in goodness.
    3. sit indoors because the mural on the wall is beautiful and there`s music playing. plus, there are no bugs to bother you during dinner.
    4. just relax.. you`re in "jamaica"

    MUST order:
    1. jamaican jerk chicken
    2. sweet chili fish
    3. peleau combo (chicken and seafood) - fried rice

    alternatives:
-banjan chicken (if you have friends who can't handle the spicy jerk chicken)

It wasn't what I expected but just what I needed.
Everything about this place is unique to Stockton:
Location: on the water surrounded by house boats
Decor: Plush tropically upulstered bamboo chairs and palms painted on the walls
Menu: A white board changed daily
Side salad: house made dressing and topped with asian cracker mix
    Food: Caribbean
Service: One waitress and a cook in the back
    Drinks: Homemade Sangria

I loved the whole experience. I felt like I was on an Island and not in the middle of dry fields.
I brought my friend there from LA and she said that is was some of the best food she'd had in a long time.

I'd been meaning to go to this place for a while since moving out this way.  This was my first visit there but so far what we ate was outstanding.  My fianceé and I ordered the Sweet Chili Fish and The Shrimp Travel each of which came with couscous.  We switched plates half-way through the meal so we could have both.

The Shrimp travel had a great spicy and creamy sauce and was my favorite.  The Sweet Chili fish was my fianceé's favorite.  We capped it off with the chocolate bread pudding which was great.

We're definitely going back.  I heard the jerk chicken was very spicy.  Looking forward to that as it's one of my favorites.

Went here around 8pm on a Friday night. There was one couple finishing up and there was only one guy (owner?) running the restaurant. He was very nice and took time to explain everything on the menu. I ordered the bajan chicken, boyfriend ordered the chicken peleau. As soon as we ordered, he immediately went back to the kitchen and started working.

We got our food incredibly fast. I read other reviews before I left and I thought the salad sounded iffy but it was surprisingly good. Everything was delicious and the two chutneys, spice and sweet, were awesome. When we were done the guy came back and took down my e-mail address to send info about music performances in the summer. I'll definitely be coming back.

Simple salads are followed by savory entrees.  Favorites include Sweet Chili Fish and the Palau rice dishes.  The kids always enjoy the carribean soft drinks too.   If you've got a big group, sitting outside at picnic tables is ideal.

I love spicy food and the Jerk pork or chicken hits the spot like nothing else.  The chili fish or the pelaus are great options if you can't handle the HEAT!    The place is very warm and comfortable.  The location is secluded and unique.  On weekends it has live music.  The menu constantly has new specials that are great.  The staff are super friendly too.  enjoy!

Very cute place with a pretty view overlooking the water. The waiter was super friendly and the owners were really nice. It was pretty slow though (since there's only like 1 cook I think) so be prepared to wait a bit. The food was good but it was overpriced compared to the amount they give you. The bread pudding was really yummy though!

This was my second time eating here. Great food, both times! In reviewing the other opinions I found that one of the biggest complaints was WAITING, so I prepared to wait. And wait I did.

But it was worth it. Delicious and spicy. And the Rum Cake is fabulous. I had a fat ass moment and had my fill of refined sugar. Also, i was sitting with a lady who obviously either has emotional problems when she gets hungry or she's only ever eaten at slick chain restaurants, cause she was like "ma'am, can I have a beer?" "Ma'am, can I have my salad now?" "Ma'am, how come it's taking so long?"

All the while myself thinking...just shut up and wait like everybody else, or go stuff your fat face at McDonalds where you can get your food in 29 seconds, okay?

FYI If you're ever eating with me and you start acting like that to the servers, we can't be friends any more.

The vibe was fun and the place was packed.  Maybe this was not a good day for the cook.  I ordered a chicken/rice dish and it was mostly a huge pile of rice.  Not seasoned well or very tasty.  I'm easy to please but in my opinion this place was very overpriced and a lot of hype.  It was a fun party-like atmosphere but not a place I'd like to spend my dining out dollar again.

One of the more unique restaurants in Stockton. You wouldn't pass by this place normally because it's located on the outskirts near the delta by 8 mile road. It's also the only place anywhere in the area you'll find caribbean food. It's a small restaurant, but there is outdoor seating which we opted for due to our large party size. They seated us by pushing two large picnic style tables together under a large gazebo. The temperature was still at least 70 degrees despite it being past 8 pm so we had no problems with this arrangement. At least until we saw the bugs. Directly above us was a large light bulb, which attracted all the flies and maggots in San Joaquin county to it. I'm by no means squeamish, but I would have rather not taken the risk of an insect dropping dead onto my food.

The menu changes all the time so there's no sense looking at their website for the menu besides getting an idea of what Caribbean food consists of. On the day we went, they had run out of several of their specials as well as the seafood and combination peleau. Every meal comes with a tiny salad, but they use chex mix instead of croutons. A fun and creative idea, but not a good fit at all.  I ordered the duck columbo, which was basically a leg of duck over rice. The duck was fairly tender and juicy, though not near the best I've had. The portions unfortunately, were rather small. In spite of having had a large lunch and stuffing myself with chips only a couple hours before dinner, I was not full at all after finishing. For $20 total after tax and tip, this was a poor value.

Breadfruit Tree is worth a try for everyone because there's nothing else like it in Stockton, but I don't think I'll be craving for it anytime too soon.

I love this restaurant!  Every time I go back to Stockton I try and make my way out there.  It is a bit of a drive but it is well worth it.

What is there to say about the Breadfruit Tree? If you have not been there yet, why not? Food is great! Scenery is great! Of course, the music is great! It's a must go for all diners!

I enjoyed this place.  It was a nice day so we decided to sit outside.  The food is very tasty, but the menu is very limited.  The menu comes to you on a dry erase board with the day's specials.  Kinda ghetto, but it's sure damn good.  My husband, a friend, and I all got three different dishes and all of them were phenomenal.  I remember getting the jerk chicken and my friend getting a hodge podge of different meats and seafoods in rice.  Kinda looked like paella on a plate.  Husband got the tri tip.  The appetizers are wonderful. I can't remember off the top of my head what they are called but they are like empanadas with spicy stuffing...yummmm.

Food is mediocre. I was excited to come here, it has a nice location on the delta.  But the food is just not that good.  Drowning it the chutneys provided makes it slightly better.    I had the goat curry and wasn't pleased, peleau was somewhat better.  Staff was pleasant enough, but I won't eat here again.

Absolutely great. great locale by the water, a litlle hard to get to the first time around.  i had a great buffet option because  school rented in out.  but delicious appetizers from the islands and i believe a uop professor is actually an owner here.  make sure you go and enjoy yourself here.  you'll love the exterior as well as great outdoor dining.  i believe there might even be dancing in the summer?  something i have yet to enjoy.  even the ducks flock here

Love this place. Haven't had jamacian food to the same degree before or since. I am totally lame so I always order the jerk chicken which is the BOMB! Odd that Stockton has this cool little marina area. It's quite a ways from where I used to live, but worth it. Better to call in food to go, so you can skip the wait, there are not a whole lot of tables.
