OMG - I could not find the number to this store for the life of me. I was afraid that this place was going to be closed if I tried walking there, so I hailed a cab and rushed to get here without knowing what time this place would be closed.
Luckily for me, they were going to close in 30 minutes.
I don't care for egg tarts - I never cared for them before.
E loves egg tarts, so I took the liberty to research and found this place as the place to buy egg tarts.
How good can these egg tarts be?
I guess good enough that I actually liked them.
I ended up buying a lot more carbs, since 6 egg tarts cost less than my cab ride over here and so I ended up buying some dried pork bread and hot dog bread.
Surprisingly good - I am a fan! -

This is the spot to get Egg Custard Tarts (Dan Tat), its definitely worth the walk into the far side of Chinatown. The pastry shell is buttery and flaky with a firm texture that does not just break off when bitten. The custard is soft and just oozes deliciousness. You will definitely be in heaven if you are a sweets lover.
MUST HAVE!!! -

I really did not want to break the five stars streak, but I do have to take one star off, ever so reluctantly. Yes. I walked all the way from Soho to Catherine Street for BT's infamous egg tars. It is not based on its economic pricing (time is money, afterall), but getting that perfect flaky crusts is an art form, plus the sugar level cannot be diabetic. BT accomplished on these two culinary level. Depending on the size of one's mouth, one egg tart is about a 3 bites euphoria; luckily, there's a second one (that is if you're not planning to share, not that you want to anyway) waiting for you in the waxy bag, that's the default packaging in Chinese bakeries.
There's also a station for other light bites, such as steamed rice rolls, chow mei fun and steamed buns, in addition to other savory goodies, but really, people buy so many egg tarts here, they are all prepackaged in twosomes, ready to be handed to the customers. So why the star off? Well, maybe because it was a quiet afternoon, but the staff was literally tagging next to me to provide service, when I mentioned I needed more time to look at their baked goods. I prepare to window shop at my own pace, but I truly felt the pressure when I felt the need to make my decision asap. Perhaps some might consider this 'attentive' customer service, but please provide me with a little space so the customer could spend more time studying your labored products. -

TWO PETS FOR ONE SINGLE BUCK
Not one but two Portuguese Egg Tarts (PETs) for $1.00. Do not skip this NYC Chinatown bakery. This is not a bait and switch offer. Even the sales tax is included in the price. By far these PETs are the BEST yet between Las Vegas to NYC. Not only embarrassing cheap but so-ooooooooo delectable to my taste buds. The crust is ever so light and flaky fine while the custard is ABSOLUTE PURE PERFECTION to all human senses.
Too bad we were on a force march in our attempt hit at least 8 more eateries today, Otherwise my wife would have been very content to stay put all day at BT and gorge herself on all those pretty PETs.
If you love PETs, Bread Talk is a must NYC Chinatown stop. BTW their coffee is damn good too. -

If it wasn't for Sally W. aka, Godmother of Chinatown and her infinite knowledge of all the hidden goodies in Chinatown, I would have never discovered this amazing Bakery and their delectable Egg Custard Tarts.
The quality of these Egg Tarts was absolutely delicious! Their crust is not too flakey or dry and their creamy custard was made perfectly since it was not overly sweet or eggy. Usually, I don't go gun-ho over egg tarts, but the way this bakery made it, it was so impressive that I couldn't help but yelp about it.
Luckily, I came in when a new batch was coming out so I had the pleasure and joy to consume them while they were piping hot (sooo good!!). The price was even more amazing as it only cost 2 for $1. Therefore, if the taste of their tarts are not going to convince you to visit this place, hopefully their price will!!
Thanks again Sally W. for recommending me this amazing place!! -

Best Dan Kha (chinese egg tart) in the entire city. and guess what, it's only $0.50 a pop.
Seriously OMG, the consistency of the custard and the texture of the crust are unmatched.
It is far off from the center of Chinatown and took a bit of iPhone mapping to get to the first time, but it was totally worth the walk. -

2/$1 egg custard tarts that are rather sizeable, especially for the price. We waited a few minutes to get a batch fresh out of the oven. I think they were actually better once cooled!
Minus one star for lack of ambiance and service. Also, we ordered a dozen and wanted a box, but they charged us extra for it.Listed in: NYC

AMAZING egg tart. I would say one of the best I've ever had. I had it fresh from the oven and it was not too eggy, not overly sweet, the crust was flaky but didn't fall apart. Simply amazing.
ALSO the steamed buns. Woah. I felt like I was in China eating this bun. Fresh, moist, not too starchy, would have liked a little more Pork filling but this thing melted in your mouth. I've had alot of steamed buns in my life and this one is #1. -

2 egg custards for $1 - can't beat that deal.
We ordered about 40 of these for a club event and they were all gone within minutes!
Their egg custards are really good. The crust wasn't too flakey and the whole thing held together even as I ate it on the go.
Will definitely be ordering from them again! -

When I heard that Chinese egg custard tarts (dan tat) for 2 for $1 I got my bao over there!
I picked up 1/2 a dozen dan tats for the office peeps and several of the long coconut bao (gai mei bao) too for the same price of 2 for $1.
Thumbs up from everybody at my office!
Great quality and a great price.
Go now before the introduction price ends.Listed in: My Cheap Eats

Okay they are getting all these stars because not only are their Egg Custard Tarts (Dan Tat) and Cocktail Buns (Gai Mei Bao) good......
I had their Fried Broad Noodles (Chow Haw Fun) and their Corn and Pork Congee (Sook Mei Sauw Yook Jook) also. Which by the way, is VERY VERY VERY good and it was only $1.50 each. OMG. The Congee ("JOOK") is such a great item to have for breakfast..warms me up inside.
These items are breakfast items and you may or may not be able to find it by lunch. I am never around to see if they have it for lunch. But what I do is get it in the morning and I bring it to work, like I did today. My breakfast and lunch...costed me only $3.00!!!! I got a "Jook" for my boyfriend....let's see if he decides to write a update for that!!! It is GOOOOOOD.
They still after 5pm sell their leftover buns 2 for $1. Great deal. They recognize me a little now...I go every so often. It's a little family store. They are a little stoic but that is the culture. It takes them time to warm up.Listed in: Godmother of Chinatown's Best…, Godmother of Chinatown's all…

Could this be R. Kelly's top secret Chinatown business venture? I don't know. But the egg tarts are excellent. The chicken steamed buns are also surprisingly good. Go ahead, live a little! Try them both! Bread Talk is real talk.

Like many others, I saw Serious Eats's article about this being the best egg tart in NYC. "What do *they* know about a good egg tart? I'll be the judge of that," said I, who grew up in Hong Kong and have had the best egg tart in Hong Kong.
I'll concede. Serious Eats was right; as far as what's available in NYC, this one is tops.
- Super light flaky crust.
- The egg custard stays light and super soft, I don't know how they do it. It's not too sweet, not too eggy. After a few hours sitting in the fridge, the top layer of custard does not turn rubbery like others do.
- This egg tart tastes great the next day! Reheats very well in the toaster oven, so you can buy a bunch and savor them for days!!
It's a few blocks out of the way from the center of Chinatown, but it's worth it!!! It's 2 for $1. Buy a whole bunch and make your walk worthwhile!!! -
Review from Darwin G.
SeriousEats has this has the best egg tart in the city and after trying the other two in the top three, it definitely is number one.
The egg part of a tart is usually quite similar, custardy, not too sweet, not too eggy, a bright yellow. However, the most influential factor about the quality of the crust. The crust of the egg tart at Bread Talk is so crumbly and light. Just unbeatable.
As a plus, they are $1.00 for two. That's incredibly cheap, for comparison they are $1.10 each at Fay Da. -

Ohmigosh! This is where the infamous, "custard bun," the bf loves from TO. For 3 for $1 after 7PM, might be a lethal combo.
Very flakey and rich egg tarts. Like the wheat bread loaf too but it's more on the savory side than the standard sweet slice bread Chinese bakeries usually makes. -

They have two specials throughout the day: $1 for 2 egg tarts or 2 cocktail buns. I come by for egg tarts every so often, and the price can't be beat!
At the end of the day, they also sell out the rest of their items on a table outside the shop at 2 for $1 as well. -

I have to say, Bread Talk has the best egg tarts (don tats) in Manhattan. They were still warm and the crust was flaky and buttery- just the way I love it. Who knew it was still possible to purchase something so delicious with two quarters. This discovery has blown my mind.

2 for $1 custards.
Custard buns. Pastries.
Would love to have these fresh out of the oven. There's a microwave for all that want things on the warmer side. -

These days egg tarts in Chinatown can cost as much as $1.10 (taipan) so I was anxious to try Bread Talk 2 tarts for $1. Solid egg tart, traditional flaky skin center not too sweet. This is bang for the buck and probably the cheapest you will find in Chinatown for sure! Only traditional egg tarts sold here, no Portuguese style egg tarts, egg white, almond or green tea sold here. Taipan in my opinion has a better tart but costing more than 2 x bread talk!
...I need to think this this over... -

I found out about this place after Serious Eats New York wrote an article about the best egg tart in Chinatown so I decided to give it a shot. Bread Talk is really small and they have a table set-up outside with their specials, $1 for 2 egg tarts or 2 cocktail buns. It's a quick a painful process. Give them your dollar, grab your egg tarts, and be on your way.
The egg tarts were great and the crusts was flaky. It's easy to finish one of these tarts in a matter of seconds so I was so glad to have another waiting for a bite.
All in all. Great price, great egg tarts, I shall return when I crave them. -

Yes, the egg tarts are a good deal, but my favorite is hot dog croissant. If you manage to get one when it's nice and fresh it'll be extra delicious! There was one time when the hot dog croissant was a bit cold and it very disappointing. If you happen to be taking it home, then a quick spin in the toaster oven should bring it back to life.

Buns are $1 for 3 after 6 pm. Woot! Salesgirl knew no English (or even Mandarin! gosh; it was so difficult to communicate) but the pineapple buns were alright. Can't complain at $0.33 a bun in NYC. Can't even get prices like this in my part of the world.

Whenever I come here, it reminds me of the times my parents brought me to a bakery to get egg tarts. The prices in nearby Chinese bakeries sell egg tarts for over a dollar each, so it's a steal to get two scrumptious egg tarts for the price of one! Not to mention, it's right around the block from home!
