Great market for Iowa!  A friend & I had a great lunch here recently & grabbed a truly delicious fruit tart to go!  This is your co-op, whole foodsy, urban/deli concept.  It fits quite well in Iowa City.

Tip: Has small parking lot with an attendant to make sure you are actually frequenting the store!

I have Celiac Disease, and have been shopping around to find an inexpensive place for produce and gluten free food.  This is not the place.  It might be well priced if you just want to buy "organic" food, but it is by far the most expensive in town as far as prices on gluten free food.  I also buy Zevia and Bread Garden also has the highest prices in town for organic soda.

They also had a lot of fruit and veggies, but there were flies buzzing around, and I can get a much better quality at Hy-Vee.

The buffet and salad bar looks okay, but I was unsure which foods contained gluten, and none of the staff looked eager to assist anyone.

Overall, not a good first impression, and I will not be returning, since I can get a larger and cheaper selection of organic and gluten free food elsewhere.

If you are familiar with Whole Foods or other Co-ops, its along that range.

Located downtown IC in the PedMall across from the public library in the ground floor walk in.

Nice outdoor seating area as well.

Great selection of organic foods as well as vegan and vegetarian.
Nice grocery section, good coffee bar, and fresh bakery and pastries.
Also a good meat and deli counter with lots of goodies pre made to buy and re heat or eat right there.

I usually hit the salad bar (hot/cold) with soups, pastas, salads, you name it. Typically $6.49per pound. Different to-go or dine-in containers and plates, as well as for soup bowls.

I have to frequent to get a few things I crave, like the best meatloaf and garlic whipped potatoes... mmmm.

I'll try to update with picts and more descriptors soon.

This is a relatively nice replacement for the ridiculously priced Tait's Natural Foods.  The grocery prices are comparable to the co-op, if not just a shade cheaper, although that's probably mostly because it's not exclusively dedicated to "healthy"/organic/sustainable foods.

My biggest complaint, honestly, is that the quality of their baked goods, particularly pastry, has declined noticeably since moving to this location.  The bread is fine, but the rum balls are huge but dry and gross (instead of small and tasty like the old place), the cannoli filling tastes weird, and the chocolate croissants have a custard inside instead of actual chocolate, which is just unforgivable.  Other quibbles: the soup's still great, but they raised the prices significantly when they moved, and their paper coffee cups are inexplicably leaky.  Makes me wish the Cottage was still downtown.

Service is pretty good, especially the gal who mans the main register in the early morning weekdays, who's always friendly and helpful.

Overall, I preferred the old format -- they did fewer things, and they clearly did need a bigger space since it was always super crowded, but they did them better and cheaper.  I'm still a semi-regular customer due to the convenient location, some unique items, and wide selection on the hot bar and salad bar, but I'm less enthusiastic about it than I was when this location opened.

2 stars is generous. Bread and garden market is ridiculously overpriced...so ok that have DECENT (not good, decent) produce, so maybe they have a right to be overpriced? Mmm, nope, rude, someone cocky, staff, and not even average product.
