It's been awhile since I've been in the IC but New Pioneer Co-Op has some competition....

This place offers gourmet groceries and pre made, ready to heat food. Not as much produce selection as the New Pioneer, but their food to heat is restaurant quality.

This year we had our Thanksgiving meal from them and it was amazing. The stuffing was simply the best, but the green beans, turkey and everything else was top notch.

What else would you expect from the Mondonator!

Every single time I go here I am treated poorly. While The Bread Garden may put quality into their food, the costumer service is lacking.

The Bread Garden is one of the places you need to stop by to experience. The place has got some hippie flare, but doesn't cross the line that says, you can't shower if you shop here.  They've got an incredible selection of cheeses, some great beers and a fantastic wine selection. It's not quite up to the level of John's Grocery, but it's about as close as you can come while remaining outside the hallowed beer laden hall of John's.

The folks here are very nice and always helpful when we're looking for something a little out of the ordinary. They've got good coffee and plenty of outdoor seating for those study filled days or when you're just looking to chillax on the ped mall.

Overall, it's a good place to grab more specialized items and has less of a selection than the co-ops in town. Not a place to go when you're looking to get good deals on things to feed a large group with, but worth going to when you're looking to grab a couple lesser known beers and some strong cheese.

A MUST if you are in Iowa City - the espresso is excellently crafted, baked 'goods' doesn't even come close to describing just HOW good they are, the buffet is interesting and super-fresh, and the outdoor seating is plentiful and the perfect place for watching the surprisingly good-looking population of I C.

I purchase the Tuscan Tomato soup in bulk (they sell it in the refrigerated section). I'm addicted, and while it may look and slightly taste like it is cream-based, the soup is actually carrot-juice based! Absolutely fabulous.

Since becomming a vegetarian, this soup has become an integral part of my weekly diet. There is nothing like it! It is just chunky and thick enough to be satisfying to munch on, but still a creamy soup without giant chunks of vegetables in it. Amazing.

The pastries here are delicious.  Their croissants are amazing!  It is a good one stop sort of place with coffee and tea, a juice bar, pastries, fresh bread, a salad bar, soup, and a grocery store that offers organic options.

This place is awesome! It's expensive for somethings but I guess for its reasons, everything I've had at the bakery is great, and everything I've eaten at the salad bar, delicious! Whoever is making the cannolis here really knows what their doing because they are insanely delicious and addicting. Even if you don't want to buy anything its a nice place to people watch, and even just look at the nice merchandise they have. The staff is friendly, happy and helpful, I look forward to my next visit everytime I go.

They have some really interesting soups that are pretty good. I didn't like any of the sandwiches that I have tried from there, though.

I loved this place! My latte was just right, and the pumpkin pecan muffin hit the spot. The cafe opens pretty early, and it's just around the corner from the Sheraton, well positioned for people watching on Clinton Street. If I was really picky, I might say that the setup is a little too "college cafeteria" for my tastes, but I'm not. I didn't try the specialty breads, but I did take home a jar of gourmet honey, and it's been making my oatmeal sweeter ever since.

This place has begun making their own donuts (or doughnuts) available on Friday -Sunday mornings.  Since there are so few options out there, I'm going to try it.

    **
Update: just went this morning and the doughnuts are really good (you get them at the coffee bar).  They only had glazed when I went, but they were great.  They were slightly crisp on the outside with a moist-chewy crumb that is somewhere between a cruller and a dunkin donut.  Hopefully they will have multiple options in the future.  In the meantime, I'll probably be going every week.

    **
Forgot to mention that the doughnuts were $.89.  Sweet!

The groceries are WAY over-priced. But we love the hot food bar adn bakery. It's a great place to take the kids before or after a trip to the library.

After leaving Iowa City, there are a few places that really stand out in my memory, this is one of them. Pretty good organic coffee, amazing pastries (which are all made fresh each morning! no starbucks type stuff here!) and tasty soups which came with a huge slice of fresh bread (do they still?) all in a little market where you can pick up a few groceries on your way out!
