After hearing rave reviews from what seems like every person in Durango, I finally made my way down Florida to try a bite of Heaven.

Why, Bread, do you have to be just down the street from me?! I've been dreaming of the Mozzarella sandwich, in all it's balsamic, olive tapenade, basily goodness.

The only thing better than the sandwich was the cookies! "Sow Your Oats" was literally the best oatmeal cookie I've ever had. Lightly crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, with caramel undertones. "Chocolate Gulch" was a cross between a cookie and a brownie, a delicious dark chocolate "crownie" (yes, I made a new word just for this cookie).

Come by, have a cookie, and enjoy the smell of fresh baked Bread.

Bread is the only true bakery in Durango. In my opinion, that is not a problem because it is an outstanding bakery that produces quality breads, sandwiches and cookies everytime.
If you are in the mood for a really good cookie, I'd like to suggest you try one of their "Sow Your Oats" cookies. They're delicious.
I would have gone five full stars but I'm not a giant fan of their coffee. Many of my friends are, however, so it might just be my personal taste in coffee.

I'm not normally a breakfast person, but every once in a while I get a hankerin' for food of the a.m. persuasion. Usually I can fix it with good old American eggs, toast, bacon, and o.j., but every once in a while I feel the need for something more European - a simple pastry and some strong coffee.

My first introduction to this place wasn't even in person; E, down in Durango for a week, decided that instead of sending flowers, he would overnight me a loaf of their delicious, seasonal apple bread and a pecan roll. If that's not love (or the sweetest thing you've ever heard!) then I don't know what is. The roll was great but the apple bread was a stand-out, made with big chunks of fresh Durango apples encased by the fluffiest, lightest cinnamon-tinged bread. Of course I had to go as soon as I moved.

This is where we ate breakfast after spending the first night in our new home. We ordered a slew of things to-go, as the place is small and about as jam-packed with locals as you can get on a weekend morning. Here's a list:
Almond croissant - to die for. The best one I've ever had because it actually had enough almond filling!
    Blueberry muffin - delicious.
Coconut macaroon - again, the best I've ever had. Huge, and moist in the center. I need the recipe!
Ham and cheese croissant - I'm guessing great, because E devoured it almost instantaneously.

I can't wait to go back, try more pastries, sample their coffee, and take home some loaves of their bread. One star off because they don't take credit cards. Seriously? It's 2009! But they have a big swing outside that you can take a ride on, so that kind of makes up for the credit card issue...

We took advice from the locals to find the best breakfast place in town. By popular demand it was BREAD hands down. Off the main tourist strip...very close to the bike path and the Animas river. The scones are great, but the turkey sandwich is outstanding! Get there early like I said it's the local hang out and pastry's go fast. Not a big breakfast menu. Do not go if you want traditional eggs, pancakes, etc....this is what the names says it is....... BREAD, so mostly all pastry products with a few lunch items. All homemade. YUM

My family and I love this place. Visited for 2 days and came here 3 times!!! Tried 3 sandwiches--the turkey cheddar sandwich wins but needs more of the chipotle-cranberry sauce. The other two (mozzarella and salami) are good but I think the bread used to make these sandwiches is too chewy (the turkey uses something more of a squawbread).

What kept us coming back though were the cookies!!! In particular, the peanut butter cookie.  So tender and fragile, like a Mexican wedding cake cookie.  AAhh--with a coffee, a perfect dessert experience.  The oatmeal and gingersnap (soft not crispy) are also very good.  I was not impressed with the chocolate cookie though.

Met Rob, the owner, warm and engaging.  Asked him if was willing to ship his peanut butter cookies across state lines--he said he was willing to give it try but could not commit that they could hold up.  He believed that there must be some bakery in LA that made his style peanut butter cookie---well, I haven't found them and I'll eat broken cookies from his bakery anytime.

Note: this is where I bought breakfast for Mesa Verde (blueberry muffins). The scones look beautiful.  They only take cash.  Rob said he plans on opening a bigger venue nearer to central Durango.

Sorry to be a nay-sayer, but I wasn't too impressed.  I kept hearing about how wonderful this place is, so we stopped in for lunch one day while I was in town.  I got a ham & brie sandwich with an apple chutney.  My sister got a turkey cranberry sandwich.  We got them to-go and went back to my sister's house to eat.  It was just OK, even a notch below.  The brie cheese was cut way too thick and had a bitter taste to it.  The bread was a little too tough for my taste and it was just overall not so great.  I did however LOVE the apple chutney on the sandwich.  The other huge disappointment was the price.  We got two pre-made sandwiches that weren't that big, no drinks, no sides, nothing special and the total was nearly $16!  YIKES!  I find that to be pretty ridiculous for what we got.

I love Durango and am usually pretty impressed by the cuisine in town, however, not all places are created equally and the sandwiches at bread are not that impressive.

On a high note though, the loaves of bread and cookies in the bakery looked awesome!  Next time I'm in town, maybe I'll have to stop back by for some bread to chew on or a cookie, but I'll pass on the sandwiches.

One of the great advantages to my apartment is being located near this place.  I love the staff, love the products, love the coffee.  Ham and cheese croissant is one of my favs as well as the BLT and the mozzarella sandwich.  Yeah, it's pricey, but WOW, it's worth it.

My friend Lisa brought me here because I said I wanted a "sandwich." Somehow she knew that by "sandwich" I meant "let's go to a really great bakery that will tempt me for the rest of my stay in Durango."

It took about 0.54 seconds for my mouth to start watering when we entered this place. Different (and REALLY YUMMY) looking fresh breads every day, a wide variety of pastries, sandwiches, coffee. And the cookies--oh god. I think I started contemplating moving to Durango at that exact moment.

My husband and I are starting to split our time between Los Angeles and Durango, Colorado.  My brother-in-law recommended Bread, and I absolutely love it!

It's away from the tourist trap of Main Avenue, and appears to be a locals only place.  Everything I have tried so far has been delicious!  It has a cool, laid-back vibe and the service is friendly.  They take cash only.

I have tried their ham & cheese croissant, the almond scone, macaroons, green chile croissant, challah bread (which I used to make french toast), ciabatta bread and coffee cake.  Oh, and I also tried this flat bread that is drizzled with olive oil and has a touch of sea salt on it!  It was just coming out of the oven so I couldn't resist - it was fantastic!

They have some pre-made sandwiches in their deli case that I have not tried, but they look amazing!

I also had their latte, which was pretty good (and strong).

one of BEST bakeries you will ever stumble upon, it is on the North Side in a sweet little corner. EVERYTHING here is to die for, we actually order our thanksgiving pies form here every year too. The most popular and insanely delicious thing they have is the ham and cheese croissants, which will most likely all be gone if you dont go early. They are probly most known for their "sow your oats" cookies...an oat cookie packed with so much flavor and goodness!! I personally love their chocolate gulch cookies which are so rich, soft yet a lil crunchy and their macaroons, also the cookies are HUGE.
They also have delicious sandwiches too and yummy coffee!!!, i love the turkey and cranberry sandwich best. All of their loafs of bread are made to perfection!!!!! i love the olive bread. The employees are so friendly and sweet and will sometimes throw in an extra cookie or croissant for you if you go towards closing time. Dont miss out on BREAD, its a great place to stop in to or from a hike to grab some delicious fuel!!!

This place just bums me out. I've tried twice now to eat here (we don't live in Durango). The first time they were out of everything and just recently we had a crappy experience.

My husband is allergic to egg and dairy products. All their prepped sandwiches had mayo or cheese in them. He asked if they could make one sandwich without cheese or mayo. They said they would do that after they served everyone else in the line that had formed behind us. Now, maybe we could be cool with this, but we'd just spent ten minutes waiting patiently for one of the counter clerks to finish his conversation on tats with another patron. I mean, c'mon, you're a bakery that makes and sells sandwiches, right? How hard can it be?

We went to Nini's Taqueria instead and had a really great burrito!

I LOVE bread. This place is the best to get any kind of baked goods on the North side of town. Their Turkey sandwiches are to die for, and guilt free as a result of their organic, delicious ingredients. Their macaroons are terrific, and the Sow Your Oats cookie is by far my favorite cookie, ever. The people who work there are friendly and happy, and I just love it here.
