"Food, Glorious Food!" that and the promise of no deep fryers called us into the Bread and Water Cafe and we decided to stay.  The menu is small, mostly breakfast (all day) and sandwiches, but the atmosphere and the food is beyond measure!  Granted, we were bone tired and hungry after a few nights of camping on Rock Island, but I think  even if I were not I would still thoroughly enjoy Bread and Water.

The egg salad was the best I ever had.  My husband ordered standard eggs over hard with bacon and potatoes--all good.  The bread is amazing!  Homemade and whole grain.  The kids enjoyed the pancakes and generous fresh fruit plate.

My only complaint is that the waitress, who was in her teens, never came back to top off our iced tea and coffee.  Big no-no in the world of diners, but I will cut her some slack as she is young and has room to improve.

Also, this restaurant is a ministry of the United Methodist Church.  All proceeds go to a local charity related to kayaking with kids at risk.  The atmosphere is laid back and hospitable.  It invites you to stay awhile and read a book or play a game (there is a nice children's area that we spent time with).  There are many Christian symbols around the place, but the staff is all about serving up hospitality, not proselytizing, so I think any one would enjoy a stop here.  I am an Episcopal priest, so I appreciated the hospitality that was obviously Christian, and doubly appreciated that it was done so well (minus not topping off the coffee and tea) and in a way that welcomed everyone and fed everyone well!

They also have a kayak rental and guide service and lodging.  We will definitely be back!

I've gotta disagree with Audrey, she sounds a bit like she wasn't having the best time of her life to begin with.  And, yeah, two people work there, it's their home, and yer on Washington Island fer Peets sake.
if you want Applebee's, go to freaking Applebee's!

the place is fine, I had toasted ham and cheese, my wife had a well crafted spinach salad and we split the second best cherry pie of the week.
I even saw that the guestrooms were nice.
