This place was absolutely fantastic. My partner and I had their standard Cinnamon Roll and the Smoked Chicken Hash with a Sweet Potato Biscuit.
There are absolutely NO words for how amazing this food was. Fresh and just fantastic. On top of that- the folks working there were fantastic and the coffee was amazing.
We are planning our commitment ceremony next year. If I had it my way- they would be catering! (Might just consider it!!). -

I have yet to eat anything here that was not delicious. The veggie breakfast scramble (with bacon added) is my favorite. Organic coffee with real cream hits the spot, too. Last trip I tried their salad sampler for lunch (3 nice size scoops of homemade salads) and all 3 were great. Chicken salad with sage and cranberries, Couscous and Lentil salad with olives. Next time I plan on trying a sandwich with homemade bread and homemade mayo I know it will be good.
One star off because they don't accept debit/credit for payment and the indoor seating here is limited and very tight--neither would keep me from enjoying the food again. -
Review from Rachel H.
Great cozy quirky bakery cafe that is seriously loved by the locals in Manzanita, and that boasts an octopus as a mascot.
The good: excellent cardamon cinnamon rolls, homemade granola, Sleepy Monk expresso, housebaked cookies, a selection of tasty sandwiches, picnic boxes to go, a game, book and magazine library to enjoy while hanging out, and friendly staff.
The bad: closed Monday-Tuesday (what!) and cash only.
This is one of the better bakery stops on the coast. It boasts a good soy latte with thick crema and made with very strong Sleepy Monk expresso. I like their creative and original logo, and yes, you've gotta love the octopus.Listed in: The Oregon Coast, Fully Caffenated

I love this place; eat here every time I'm in Manzanita and it's always good food. Small, intimate, coast-town restaurant with fresh, healthy food like fritata, wonderful breads and pastries, fruit and pasta salads, expresso drinks. Small indoor seating area, picnic table and enclosed patio outside. Staff always friendly.

Fabulous!
Everything in this place is good. We always stop here for lunch when we come to Manzanita. -
Review from Chiemi N.
While walking my dog at 4:30am in the sleepy little town of Manzanita, I noticed the only place that was stirring at that time of the morning was the Bread and Ocean Bakery. Apparently they start really early to bake some of that yumminess!
At 7:30ish, I decided to walk over for some breakfast. There were so many things to choose from! I opted for the Polenta Breakfast and hot spiced orange tea. The Polenta Breakfast was good, but I don't think I would rush back to Bread and Ocean Bakery for this item. I did get a couple of mini cinnamon buns and a strawberry turnover to go. I also got the white chocolate mocha to go The mini cinnis definitely made me wish that I got the full sized version instead!
Bread and Bakery uses organic and locally sourced produce and meats. I definitely want to go back and try other baked goodies! Make sure you bring cash, they don't accept credit/debit cards, though they say checks are fine! -
Review from Ryan A.
What am I missing here? We went here for breakfast, excited because of the reviews and recommendation from the owner of the house we were staying at. I couldn't wait to get a good cinnamon roll. I'm still waiting.
As was beginning to be a trend in Manzanita, this place didn't take credit cards. I wasn't as bothered by it as at the restaurant the night before. It's a small bakery, not a full service restaurant, but everyone will eventually need to get on board with taking credit cards. People are carrying less and less cash and they simply won't be able to spend their money at establishments that don't take credit cards.
Now, on with the review and no more ranting.
I had a cinnamon roll, as I mentioned. It wasn't very good. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that I could make a cinnamon roll that was ten times better. And, if someone asked for one from me and they weren't fresh out of the oven, I would ask if they wanted it warmed (read: I wasn't offered the option of a warm cinnamon roll). I'm sure they had probably made it that morning, but it tasted like it was a day old. I've had better packaged ones from the grocery store. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't good. The boyfriend and another friend with us both got the ham and cheese roll. Their thoughts of the food was even worse.
AND it was far more expensive than it should have been. We got a cinnamon roll the next morning somewhere else that was about the same or a little better for half the price. Anyone that knows me knows that if you're going to charge high prices for something, it better be good.
Not good. I don't know what everyone sees in this place. -

The place would be perfect is they took cards. I delight in the way they transform from bakery to candlelit dining on certain evenings. The food is wonderful.

I'm one of those possibly annoying people who can (and might) tell you I've been heading to Manzanita since before it had sidewalks, and pretty much nothing was there but the grocery store, the bar, and a couple restaurants.
This review is not about my opinions on the boom that kind of ate Manzanita -- this review is about seriously eating in this sweet and cute beach town.
Bread and Ocean is a small deli/restaurant/coffee shop/bakery and gawd I love it so.
Been here for dinner a while back -- it was delicious, creative in flavor, and yes, a little pricey. But that's what often happens when good food and trendy atmosphere hit the beach. I don't mind. Beach weekends are a treat, so I treat myself to a little awesomeness when dining out.
Our most recent trip was a quick one: latte and perhaps a snack. The woman behind the counter was incredibly friendly, great sense of humor, but some of the other staff were a little too cool for their risotto salad and olive loaf. I get it that some pretty unattractive people come from hussle-bustle points east, drag their dogs around their tiny town, and may even talk way too loudly on their cell phones while driving obnoxious SUVs three yards to their parking lot, but hey, I'm one of the considerate ones. Don't scowl at me.
Bought a tub of their granola and wish I'd grabbed about three more. Delicious flavor, perfectly roasted, with yummy bits of fruit.
Bread and Ocean is a bright star in Manzanita's growing constellation. Concentrate on the food, smile at the staff, and turn your cell phone off. -

This type of place should be in Portland. It's got that whole laid back feel to it and the combinations of food put together to make sandwiches etc. is very imaginative/inventive.
It's basically a higher class of deli. If you check out their window deli fridge in front while you wait in line to put your order in, you'll see some interesting salads for your viewing. A lot of their food is organic and local as well. They bake their own breads too.
We ordered the albacore tuna melt panini and their veggie sandwich. My partner enjoyed gobbling down their homemade breaded awesome melted cheese albacore sandwich and I was chomping down on the spinach, cuke, pickled red onion, smeared with this lovely pesto fresh bread sandwich. They have beer and wine as well as some unusual sodas to choose from.
Once you get to the front, you place your order, they get your name and holler it when it's ready. You pick it up at the window.
If you show up during busy times yes you will be waiting but it is worth it. It's a great place to sit outside in good weather as well. -

Bread and Ocean is the size of a garden shed, but it's one of my favorite places to eat in Manzanita. They make a great albacore tuna melt panini on freshly baked bread, and lots of other great sandwiches. This place is also a favorite breakfast haunt and it's always crowned in the morning.
They offer plenty of vegetarian and organic choices, as well as a deli case up front that is filled with salads, cheeses, and meats. Usually, they have an interesting and unusual drink lineup, and they make the best cup of coffee in town.
You have to order at the counter, and sometimes the line stretches out the door when it's busy. You also pick up your order on the other end of the counter when it's ready, but the place is so small that the counter is never more than a couple of feet away no matter where you sit.
I never come to Manzanita without visiting Bread and Ocean. -

I love everything about this place.
They catered our rehearsal dinner in 2007 and did a FABULOUS job.
Whenever we're in town-- we always swing through. I like to pick up food and drinks to take down to the ocean.
It's a pretty typical high-quality, mostly organic deli. Very clean. FOod is never anything but great. They are the best place to go in Manzanita for a quick bite-- their curried chicken salad is perfection. -
Review from Lara S.
Sadly, we missed out on dinner here while visiting Manzanita because we didn't think ahead to make a reservation. Lucky for us, though, we didn't miss lunch! Great sandwiches and to-die-for house-made garlic pickles. Also the best ginger cookie I've ever tasted. I noticed that they also package up a picnic lunches for you to take to the beach. What a wonderful idea that I'd definitely like to try on my next visit to the region.

Service was atrocious. I think the gentleman who took our order hated us and wanted to cause us harm.
The food, however, was good. Not great, but good enough. -

We decided to stop at Bread and Ocean for dinner on a trip from Tillamook back to Portland. We had read the menu in the past and the place seemed really interesting and since I'm a foodie, I'm always looking for something really good. The "no cards" policy didn't put us off, we came prepared with a checkbook.
I must say, it was just "ok" with my impression going down as the evening went on. The inside dining room was booked until 830pm so we sat outside which was nice. The service was probably the #1 issue I had with B&O, it was so passive and really uncaring. After being seated, we waited for what I consider to be a long time before someone came around to take our order. I'm used to the typical restaurant where the server makes some type of contact with you at the beginning and then comes back to answer questions and take your order. Since this place is basically a catering operation with an added dinner service, it really felt like the staff really didn't care.
The food was ok, but was bland. The carmelized onion tart on greens was ok with no standout flavors. The salad with pears and pear vinaigrette was also ok, but bland. Finally, my fish tacos were just ok. For these prices, I expect more than ok.
As we were getting ready to leave, we had to come inside the restaurant to write the check since it was dark outside and the one tea light at our table was not enough illumination to see what we were writing.
I realize this is Manzanita and perhaps this is "beach food" but I was really unimpressed. -

I'd happily retire to Manzanita and end my days buzzing on java and chowing down on buns from here.
Hectic on a Saturday. -

Whole Wheat Cinnamon Roll. Sound good to you? Yeah, me neither.
But that was before I walked into Bread and Ocean in the pretty oceanside hamlet of Manzanita, Oregon! After a rainy morning at the beach we came to Bread and Ocean for fuel. We ordered hot chocolate, coffee, a whole wheat cinnamon roll and some breakfast polenta.
Because the whole wheat cinnamon roll was without frosting I considered it a dubious proposition. I tucked in nonetheless. And amazingly, even though it had no processed sugar (sweetened with maple syrup and honey), it was quite good!
The breakfast polenta, however, was the real winner for me. It's not hard to ruin polenta, turning it into a dry, tasteless mess. Bread and Ocean's breakfast polenta was perfect! Layers of tomatoes, cheese, eggs and it managed to be both crisp on top and moist inside - no easy feat!
A week later and I'm still thinking about how to recreate it in my own kitchen! -
Review from Zac S.
bad music, young staff, great sammy!
The kind of bread that looks like it will cut your mouth open, but soft and fluffy instead!
Talk is that they are going to sell, and that makes the locals very sad.
Because I am not sure where else they would go... -

First class baking goods, out of this world tasty deli and entrees.
Often slow and attitude-y service. Do not take cards. Closed Mon and Tues -

Cool little place out in this little town. Nice hip bakery vibe with yummy baked goods displayed for all to see.
Only stopped by for a cinnamon roll and OJ, but it was some of the best I've ever had. Fresh squeezed OJ and enough cinnamon in the roll to make your nose tingle.
The sandwich menu looks amazing, someday I will break down and drive the 3 hours just to get one. -

Everything at Bread & Ocean is top rate. Favorites include their blueberry rolls (seasonal), cinnamon rolls, goat cheese terrine with garlic/sundried tomatos/pesto, roast beef sandwich, and multigrain bread..... I could go on and on.
We've also eaten dinner here - a much fancier experience. The dinner food is fresh, interesting, and perfect. Good vegetarian options too.
This place is the main reason we stay in Manzanita whenever we come to the coast. -

Manzanita, OR
I can not write enough praise for Bread and Ocean. Julie Barker, the owner and creative genius behind the place, is truly a top notch foodie and chef. She formally owned the Blue Sky Cafe in Manzanita, which set the watermark for all restaurants from that moment on. Now she has turned her extraordinary talents on a bakery and bistro.
The lunches and baked goods are remarkable, but where you will find the mother lode to your senses, is in Julie's dinners. There is where you will find such wonders like the red lentil pate served with black sesame crackers, smoked chicken risotto, local pork chops grilled to perfection and Asian crab cakes with wasabi cream. Julie changes the menu every week to take advantage of the seasonal produce that is available from all the local farmers that she buys from. Julie's standards are high and she buys as much local and organic produce and food as possible. Everything, and I mean everything, is made from scratch.
Dinners are only available on the weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Do yourself a favor and go for dinner! -

We hit the trifecta at Bread and Ocean by eating there for 3 meals! So, despite it being my first visit to Manzanita and the restaurant I'm an expert. Not but here are my impressions.
Lunch- get a half sandwich as a whole is simply too big. I had the tuna melt panini- great bread but the tuna, spinach, and onion filling were a bit bland. I'm never one to think anything needs more salt but this did. Because this is first and foremost a bakery I had to have a cookie for dessert and it was delicious- very old fashioned chocolate chip- crispy on the outside but soft on the inside and none of this raw dough crap you get a any number of chains.
We went back for dinner and even though it was Saturday night and the place has 15 tables max we were seated right away (thye take res which is a big plus). We had a nice bottle of Viognier for $26 which is crazy cheap in a restaurant. I started with the organic greens salad with blue cheese, toasted hazelnuts and strawberries. Very fresh and perfectly dressed. For my entree I had chicken tikka skewers with rice with fresh peas, red lentil pancakes, and a fruit chutney (apricots and something else). The chutney with the chicken, peas, and rice was a perfect mouthful of flavor. Worth savoring even if the chicken was a little dry.
I had to pass on dessert as we wanted to watch the sunset so I promised to come back in the morning for a cinnamon roll. Forget that I Need one like I need another 10 lbs. It was just right- not too sweet, chewy texture, and enough glaze without making you want to gag. Only problem with breakfast is they don't do much of it. They had no savory rolls- one customer had bought all they had and it was only 10am. Not too many other options.
Things you should know- this is a very low key establishment in a tiny town. No credit or debit cards but they will take checks - which I don't get because it would seem easier to bounce a check but whatever. For lunch you bus your own table. For dinner the food is upscale but the attitude and dress code are not. If you're a foodie this is the place to try. -

I love this place for espresso drinks, lunch or dinner. The ingredients are organic, tasty and food is reasonably priced.
Unlike others who have commented, I have always found the servers to be friendly and efficient.Yes, during busy times, orders take longer, but that is to be expected. -

Love this place!!! The poppy seed cinnamon roll is nipping at the heels of my all time favorite cinnamon roll (shout out to Teezer's on Orcas). The one thing is, you have to get there early because they sell out. We overslept one morning and missed the poppy seeds. Thank God there was a cardamom and a regular left. They were good, just not as good. If you miss the poppy seeds or other rolls, don't worry. The brioche is tasty. The house made granola is dynamite; we get a couple quarts to take home. I got a couple loaves of bread for sandwiches and they were perfect, the baguette was my favorite. This is a "can't miss" when in town.

Since we just popped in for a few minutes it's hard to rate to 5 starts but I bet that I could go there! The place was small but had some great little perks. They sell bread bags to go along with the yummy bread offerings. We tried a cinnamon cardamon and orange walnut roll along with getting a loaf of their fig walnut bread. All of which was wonderful while road tripping. The coffee was great too. We'd definitely stop in again.

Went here for dinner which I think was the most innovative and well executed for miles around. I had a very tasty and creative grilled quail with charred fresh peaches over polenta and bitter greens. Ten years ago I would have had to go to Portland for a dinner like that! Excellent.
The place is totally casual but they dress it up in the evening with white tablecloths and great place settings. During the day it is more of a bakery and deli with some really tempting salads and sandwiches and some interesting breakfast stuff too. Oh and the bread is to die for--they do special breads every day as well as basics.
Opening hours are funky, and dinner only a couple nights a week, and they are closed Mondays and Tuesdays...but if you are in the area for a while it is worth figuring out their schedule! Excellent. -

So this woman at a gallery in Cannon Beach (i think it was Cannon Beach) recommended we stop here for lunch. We were on a coastal Oregon road trip, making our way down the coast, and so, sure, why not. Stopped in Manzanita, and found it. Heaven. So. Freaking. Good.
I had the veggie sandwich (cold), with the broccoli salad. I think I'm salivating as I type. Friend had the roast beef sandwich (also cold), red lentil curry soup (again, i'm watering, i need a hanky). I was debating about the 3 salad combo, but seriously, the combo of the mixed greens with the pesto sauce, chipolte-like mayo, cukes, avocado, and whatever the hell else was in that sandwich was intoxicating. -

We were advised by the local pizza place to hit this place up for a REALLY yummy dessert. Sure enough, they were spot on!
I had a difficult decision btwn the maple tart or a pistachio something with a rosewater whip. I went with the maple tart with a spicy whipped cream and candied pecans had me licking the box and pineing for more.
Luckily we could go back in the morning before we left! After we took the dog for his morning run on the beach my husband went back and said they had a beautiful selection of mouthwatering rolls: ham & cheese, cinnamon bun rolls, and a daily special bread: Rosemary, potato, leek.
This place is awesome and we will be back for sure! Next time we will try a sandwich and take some rolls back with us. -

This place is great, and a welcome alternative to its mediocre restaurant peers in Manzy. I've been in for lunch (yummy sandwich) and breakfast (coffee and cinnamon roll) and thought both were delicious. It's casual, tasty, and quick. The coffee is hot and fresh. It's one of my favorite places in town... I can't wait to try it for dinner sometime.

Does anyone else remember the wonderful Blue Sky Cafe, and seriously miss their wonderful dinners? Or are you looking for the best killer dinners in the Manzanita / Cannon Beach / Nehalem area? If so, you need to have dinner at Bread and Ocean, the fantastic bakery, take out, and weekend dinner restaurant. One of the creative forces behind Blue Sky Cafe took pity on us and opened Bread + Ocean.
In the mood for fresh baked pastries and hot out of the oven breads? Show up early and stand in line. They sell out fast. We're not talking Wonder Bread here.
Looking for a lunch more creative than the usual beach food? Stop in for a boxed lunch, or their wonderful soups.
But if you are looking for a real treat, make reservations for their short dinner service, Friday through Sunday. The experience just can't be beat for miles around. -

Thankyou once again Yelp! This quaint little organic fresh deli & bakery was fantastic! Cute outdoor sitting & indoor available. Bustling with farm fresh ingredients. We had the veggie panini on cheddar bread.. Yum!! We also tasted the homemade biscotti, double yum! Definitely a great non-heavy healthy lunch stop.

This place is wonderful! We stopped in for lunch on our way from Seattle to Florence. It is tucked into a great spot a block from the ocean. The sandwiches were delicious and fresh, the fruit salad was amazing and the chocolate chip cookie was the perfect end to a great meal. We were able to sit and eat outside in the sunshine on their picnic table. After lunch, we strolled down to the ocean and watched the dogs play in the sand. I couldn't have asked for a better place to stop for lunch. So fresh and tasty!

I wandered into the Bread and Ocean Bakery attracted by what appeared to be a good, healthy menu. Local, organic items featured prominently. I was eating alone, and did not have a reservation - SO, they made room for me in the kitchen. A table cloth, candles, the whole bit, right on their butcher block. It was one of those wonderful surprise moments I will remember until I am old and gray. Also the food - FANTASTIC, CREATIVE, AND ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. I had the arugula salad with olives, nectarines, feta cheese and blood orange vinaigrette. I followed this with their marinated and grilled tempeh. had to bring half of that dish back to my room. Wonderful place.

Very good little bakery and a hidden gem of a restaurant on the coast!
We had some delicious breakfast enchiladas and chocolate mascarpone brioche here on a couple separate occasions. The cinnamon rolls look really good as well! They have specials during the week, all of which sounded wonderful.
This bakery also tries to use organics and locally-produced food as much as possible, which I always like to hear!
They serve that Sleepy Monk brand of coffee, which is pretty solid and is roasted just North in Cannon Beach. This is important if you are a coffee junkie from Portland such as myself! Decent go-juice can be difficult to find out here! -

We have frequented this place now for about 2 years. Its a wonderful place for breakfast and lunch. The menu is completely fabulous and the food is prepared on the spot. I usually order the grilled veggie sandwich or not grilled, like it either way! The soup is also good when its vegetarian. This last weekend I enjoyed their Hungarian Mushroom which was probably the best Hungarian Mushroom soup I have ever eaten. We also had breakfast there before leaving town. They were serving an amazing vegetarian scramble which I ordered....lots of roasted veggies, goat cheese and eggs, a great combination. They serve Sleepy Monk coffee and sell the beans. Every time we are there I make sure and buy a big bag of beans, coffee amazing! The only downfall would maybe be the seating, when its cold seating is limited. We enjoy the spring and summer months when we can sit outside. The place takes cash or checks only which eliminates some of the white trash trying to use their credit cards and obviously not local. We have not tried dinner there and would like too some time in the next year. Cheers to this place, one of the reasons we love Manzanita.
