I'd like to point out that I hate sweet potatoes.  No, no, no thank you.  But sweet potato chips came with my sandwich at Bread and Lily, and well, I have a new found respect for the yam.  Bread and Lily makes awesome, awesome sweet potato chips.  I'd go back just for them.

Ok, on to the main stuff.

I went here for lunch with my mother - we're both first timers.  Mom got a chicken caesar salad.  It looked amazing.  She loved it.  If I weren't a veggie, I would have demanded a bite (actually, I was drooling a little bit at the sight and smell of it).  It definitely looked like the chicken was grilled very well.

I ordered what I think was a lunch special; tofu, cucumber, carrot, and greens accompanied by a yogurt-something dressing on a whole wheat roll up.  The first thing I noticed was the freshness of the veggies.  They seemed to be just-cut.  Mmmm, crunchy, yummy green goodness.

The tofu was a little disappointing.  It was a softer tofu, which was fine, but I would have appreciated if they had thrown it on the grill before tossing it in with the veggies.  Not everyone likes their tofu "raw" and well, yeah, I'm in that camp.  I still enjoy tofu and it was nice to have some protein in my wrap, so all's good.

Oh yeah, I already mentioned the sweet potato chips.  Guess I don't need to say again that I loved them.  Because I did.  You know, love them.

Nice decor and a pretty clean dining room.  I enjoyed chatting and getting to look out the window, watching Newton roll by.  And the staff, of course, was perfectly nice.

Amazing.

Recently had some guests in town and swung over to Highlands for a light lunch, thinking Bakers Best would be on the menu.. stumbled upon Bread and Lily, which apparently I haven't noticed in the months that it has been open.

Several sandwiches were had across the board - "The Steak", a fantastic sliced flat iron with awesome spice on delecitble baguette. "Oven Roasted Turkey" is Thanksgiving on artisan bread. The "Slow Smoked Spicy Sweet Pork Loin" is just that - on a mind bogglingly good roll - the "apple jalapeno pottage" is unbelievable.

All the sammiches come with sweet potato CHIPS - not gross fries - but crispy, delicate chips - that are entirely irresistable. And the pickle is top notch - can't leave that out.

I couldn't stop commenting on the obvious component to these dishes as we ate - the BREAD. Its so, so refreshing to find a place that makes great sandwiches ON GREAT BREAD. I don't understand what is wrong with Mass, but it is amazingly hard to find sandwiches served on the right carbo-goodness-vessel.

Fantastic job, B&L - keep it up!

Other notes - their baked goods were artistic and mouth watering at the same time. Coffee got thumbs up, as well - though it was said that "its no Peet's". Outdoor seating - plenty! With table service!

A Very, Very, Very Good Lunch

My wife and I had one of those seredipitous perfect lunches here today.  *Exceptionally* good sandwiches - comfort food on 'roids.  Specifically, a fantastic pork sandwich and delicious steak sandwich, with a fine gazpacho, lemonade and a ricky.   You can taste the scrupulous care in preparation; the bread is a cut above.  They have a great array of salads, sides, and desserts.  They also have a kid's menu with mac, corn dog, and grilled cheese - I'm tempted to order off it next time.  Because we will be back.  Oh yes.

My Grandmother stopped by last week and we decided to go out for lunch. We wanted something quick and simple, just plain sandwiches. We figured we would drive around and see what we came across. We ventured into Newton Highlands Center and stumbled upon a very cute looking cafe type eatery. We decided to give it a try. I truly wish we hadn't.

When we walked in, all we could talk about was how cute it looked. I really is a very sweet little place. We walked up to the register to find two younger girls behind the counter arguing with each other. We expected them to stop bickering since we were standing there waiting, but they continued to act inappropriately and hostile while we were right in front of them. My Grandmother was a little taken aback, but we decided to stay anyways. One of the girls huffed back to the kitchen area, while the other girl leaned with her forearms across the counter and asked "what can I get you." No hello, no how are you, just a rude "what can I get you."

My Grandmother, being the sweet older woman that she is, said hello to the girl and asked her what she would recommend as we had never been there. "it really depends on what you want." Okay... obviously we are not sure what we want or else we would order it. While my Grandma searched over the menu, I ordered a simple Fruit and Yogurt cup with a lemonade. I wasn't starving so I figured it would satiate me. My Grandma asked if they had chicken salad which they did. Being an older person, she has false teeth and asked the girl what the softest bread is. She said the baguette was the softest, so she ordered it with a coffee. The bill came to almost $17, which considering we were in Newton wasn't too bad. We were handed our drinks and went to find a seat.

I sipped my lemonade and honestly felt like spitting it out. It tasted like it was pure lemon juice. I don't know why they made it so strong! I'm almost certain that there was no sweetener in it. I threw it out and asked for a cup of water and was told that they would not give water to the costumers and that I had to purchase it. Ugh, fine. My Grandma then sipped her coffee and told me it was "frigid." Since she is obsessed with having boiling hot coffee, I figured that she was exaggerating, until I felt it. It was absolutely cold. She didn't want to make a fuss so she ended up drinking it.

The girl brought us our lunch. I was surprised to see that my fruit and yogurt was in a coffee mug with not much fruit... or yogurt. It did however have a nice assortment of fruit-melon, blackberries, etc. I tried the blackberries and they were so sour that I could not eat them. There was hardly any yogurt on the bottom... so annoying.

My Grandma picked up her sandwich and the bread was as hard as a rock. She called the girl back over and asked the girl if there was a softer bread to which the girl said that the wheat was the softest. Didn't we ask that in the first place? The girl, clearly annoyed, schlepped back to the kitchen and ordered another sandwich. It came back and we decided that we just wanted to eat our meal and get out of there.

My Grandma took her first bite and made a face. Uh oh, what else could go wrong? "This is old. Its been sitting around. Look at the chicken!" I looked at it and could tell that it looked a bit old. Being allergic to nuts, I could not try it as they mix them in their chicken salad.
I ate about half of my cup and threw the rest out. About 1/3 of the sandwich is all that my Grandma ate-I'm surprised that she even ate that!

We gathered our things together and left. The whole ride home Grandma was talking about how the meal was "crapola." Every time I talked to her this week she has joked with me about the shitty place down the street.

I have never taken the time to write such a long review, but I honestly am just so disappointed with this place. We really should have asked for our money back, but we didn't want to deal with the unfriendly staff. It is a sham that the food is so awful because it really is a cute place.

If I could give this a rating of 0 I would, but unfortunately that is not allowed on Yelp. Please, stay away from Bread and Lily... unless you WANT a bad meal!

I really wanted to give a better review here, but I just could not.  I stopped in for a sandwich and was so disappointed.  The bread was good but the meat was dry and fatty.  The lettuce was brown and wilted.  The sweet potato chips were very nice though.  I feel it might be a better establishment for their catering then they are for a place to sit down and eat. I was hoping for an alternative to Baker's Best across the street but Bread and Lilly fell short.

We used them to cater two rather large parties and they did a phenomenal job. Food was delivered on time and was absolutely delicious. Ben who owns B&L asked us a few questions and then came up with creative menus that were perfect for both events.

The ladies and I were hungry and a little early for a nail appointment, so we stopped by bread and lily for lunch.  Fantastic!  We each ordered a panini and found them quite good-- but the hand-cut sweet potato chips!  They made an otherwise very good lunch into an EXCELLENT lunch.  I also had the black currant lemonade and just thinking about it now makes me want more.

I wish we hadn't been in such a rush, it was a warm spring day and so sitting out in the sunshine and people watching with some of their ice cream would have been nice.

Went to Bread & Lily last night for a Ice Cream Tweetup.  Discovered probably the best turkey sandwich to be had in my recent memory.  It's really good. I had one with bacon and another person I was talking with had one without and she said the same thing.  The coffee was also very good, and the ice cream was good also.  Its a little quirky with two entrances but you gotta go and if you don't get the turkey sandwich well I can't help you then.

This is a very nice spot in Newton Highlands.  We actually came to the area to have lunch at another restaurant, but we could not resist passing this spot up.  It was a perfect Spring day, and this spot is perfect for a quiet lunch, sitting at one of their outdoor tables, under the shade of large trees.  The sandwiches and pizza we had were delicious, filled with interesting flavors.  And their hand-made ice cream was the perfect ending to a late-afternoon lunch.
