This is definitely a chef's restaurant. Great food, with fresh, local ingredients as much as possible. My wife and I went for their "market meal" about a week ago. It was very good, and fun to have something different. It's a bit pricey ($35ea for the 5 course market meal) for the portion size, but you are getting a much better, more fresh product.

It's also not "fancy" or pretentious, and you can have fancy food while sitting on the outdoor patio in shorts. The service is always very friendly as well. A big plus for me is the local craft brew selection on tap. Just a few choices, but at least they don't have the regular "whatever light" that you have to put up with at most places (although this is changing).

The address for this place is on 8th Street, but really, it's on S Street.  If we hadn't confirmed the restaurant we would have missed it for sure.

I was here for lunch during a game.  They weren't playing the game, but instead some kind of jazz; they score points for that.

The bread is amazing, but the food, while local and foodie-sounding, is only so-so.  I was hoping to love it and I don't.

I had the half-sandwich, half-salad option with the Vegetarian sandwich (their one vegie option); the pickled vegetables were bland and the hummus OK.  The salad was all right (lots of parmesan; spring mix; buttermilk dressing that let you taste the buttermilk).  My companion had the chicken and pesto, which was made with dried tomatoes instead of basil.  She wasn't impressed.  The potato salad was all right.  I scrounged some pepper from another table; it helped.  Food is served on real plates with real silverware; they appear to have an impressive bar but we didn't sample it.  You order at the counter, seat yourself, and they bring your food.

The 64% cocoa chocolate mousse was indeed rich, but it didn't really scream chocolate.  I've made better at home.

Service was somewhat indifferent; I asked for potato salad and got chips; he forgot to give us our waters until we asked.

Got the main simple salad and the sample of all the bread spreads (4 of them: apple butter, olive + white bean, hummus, and pesto). I didn't like the oliver and white bean dip/spread very much. The apple butter was great -- very sweet.

Also, the service was great, but I hadn't come at a very busy time.

    COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED!!
The decor is simple and clean. The staff was knowledgable and helpful. The food was amazing! It made me feel like I was home in Denver.

I delighted in the baby lettuce with parmesian and finished with white bean & calamatta olives with a baguette. The meal was just the right amount and the staff was great. I am definately going back.
It was a breathe of fresh air.

Shocked to find such a unique place in Lincoln, NE (sorry Nebraskans).  Food was fresh and tasty, service seemed a little impatient and unfriendly but it was a rainy gross day out.

Got the potato bacon soup which was rich and deliciously smoky from the bacon.

Tried the apple butter app and was so pleased with the amount of vanilla and delicious apple-y goodness it contained.  Not sure whether the portion was worth $6 though (shouldn't I get a jar for that much?).

Split the pork sandwich and the special veggie sandwich that day.  The pork was beautifully cooked and wonderfully moist.  Got it with an apple creme that was a fantastic complement.

The veggie sanwich was out of this world.  It was the right kind of dense and tasted like a pizza party.  It was on a delicious buttery sesame seed bun; and if I'm not mistaken they make all their bread in house!

Super impressed with their beer/wine/cocktails too!

What a great place! The atmosphere is so comfortable, the menu very eclectic. The food is local and fresh. We started the meal with hot, savory apple fritters with a side of warm honey for dipping. I enjoyed the Simple Salad and a bowl of Borscht.  I also ordered the Ploughman, a plate with freshly baked bread, cheese and salami. My friend enjoyed the Pumpkin Risotto.  It was such a good, comforting meal.  I highly recommend Bread and Cup!

I've been here at least five times for dinner and have not been disappointed. The menu changes everyday, so be sure to check their website for the day's offerings. Most recently, We shared the chicken liver pate and each had duck confit. Both were delicious. If you decide to come here for dinner, do yourself a favor and go all out. This is the kind of place to do it. Share a bottle of wine, order starters, try something new for a main course, and stay for coffee and dessert. This is the kinda spot you go to enjoy the meal, wine and conversation. Don't treat it like a quick supper, Bread and Cup deserves more attention than that.

I've only had lunch here once, I wasn't blown away- but they have a standard selection of soup and sandwiches. The pork sandwich is huge and not bad. I'm a fan of their dinner and to avoid getting burnt out, I stay away from their lunch. I can only hope this place improves, as it is one of my favorite places in town.

The place is small, make reservations or you'll be standing for awhile.

They have changed their menu slightly to make it more of a dining destination. Gone are the sandwiches for dinner and now they offer a selection of 5-6 seasonal entrees and 3-4 salads/appetizers each now. Pasta on Friday. Pizza on Thursday. They also have both classic and seasonal cocktails.

Service continues to be a big problem. First of all, they insist that you wait to be seated when you enter, but there is no hostess station. Also, the hosts take forever to seat someone so you're standing there like an idiot while 4 people stand around at the counter. Then, the servers are either slow or rude. Also, can we get a dress code please? There's no reason that the male servers should be allowed to wear sleeveless shirts. I don't want to see armpit hair when I am paying $15-$20 for an entree.

The cocktails have left me pretty cold. I tried two of the seasonal cocktails and was unimpressed. They weren't well balanced and they were overpriced. A Sidecar I had earlier this week was pretty dull. I think I've had better cocktails on cruiseships. Also, your bartenders need to learn more about their beer, wine & cocktails. When you tell me you have microbrewed beer and seasonal cocktails, I expect servers to know what the ingredients are and the beer style. If you need someone to train your staff properly about beer, look to Jason from Bricktop.

Iron out the kinks a bit please...

I want to like this place.  I really do!  I get taken here by some friends of mine from time to time.  I get the concept.  I get the gist of it, but there is just something about it.  Maybe its the feng shui of the place.  Long hallway facing the kitchen with two less than nice ladies "manning" the registers and the front bar.  If you don't quite understand the menu or the offerings, you get barked at... kind of like the soup nazi!  This next part is all in CAPS because if there is one thing I want people to get from this review its this.  THE BREAD THEY USE IS REALLY HARD.  ITS FRESH, BUT ITS HARD.  THREE OUT OF THE FOUR TIMES I'VE GONE, ITS LEFT SMALL GASHES ON THE ROOF OF MY MOUTH!  This is sad because they do make really good natural, earthy sandwiches.  The hummus is very good... very real and delicious.  The outside area is awesome when they aren't building an arena in the Haymarket.
I really want to like this place.  I do.  But I am on the fence about it!  Be nicer and offer a softer crusted bread and you'll get another point. DO the aforementioned and redo the lay out of the place and you'll be a five star bistro!

I keep going back because I want a different experience, but it always seems to fall just short. The most recent visit two weeks ago, with three colleagues for a Saturday night dinner, fell flat on the floor.

We arrived around 6pm, ordered dinner and drinks and received our wine, olives, and salads promptly. Then the waiting began. Our entrees were taken to another table approximately 25 minutes later and we had to wait an additional 35 minutes after this for our entrees to arrive. That is, we waited a full hour after our salads were taken away.

I fully understand that mistakes happen, especially on busy nights, but the restaurant's response to the gaff was what was most disappointing of all. Once the mistake was recognized, we asked for bread (twice) to nibble on while waiting, it never arrived. The server never returned to the table to ask if we would like more wine nor to fill our water during the entire hour wait  and despite our best efforts, we were unable to flag anyone down to help us. So there we sat, trying to make the best of the situation by chatting with our empty glasses and stomachs.

Aside from a brief, half-hearted apology from the server when the food arrived, there was no attempt from the management to rectify the situation nor did it appear that our food got "bumped up" in the order of service (we saw several other tables receive their food after the mistake was identified, eat it, pay, and leave before we even got to take the first bite). These are slow cooking items where the main protein is comparatively "ready to go," at least more so than an entree calling for a sautee or intensive last minute sauce preparation. Why the extended wait following this mistake?

How about a drink on the house? Dessert? Something? I am not a stingy diner, but some gesture/acknowledgement would have been nice. What's more, our $15 entrees were terribly small and the all-day pork was a dainty portion with large amounts of fat and sinew. Granted that it is a fatty cut, but there should certainly be a reasonable amount of edible product on the plate. We really missed the fresh market veg also (6-8 snow peas on each plate), which had they had a larger showing might have been able to make up for the lack of meat. This would also seem to be in keeping with the "sustainable" platform of the restaurant. The portion sizes might be appropriate as part of a tasting menu, but not for a $15 stand-alone entree.

All in all, we left hungry after waiting an inordinate amount of time for our food. It makes me very sad because as I mentioned in my last post, I WANT to like this place. I want it to be my local place. I want to go here and have a good time without leaving hungry. I want this to be a place I can take out of town colleagues to show them how great Lincoln is, but simply can't if I am concerned about them being able to get enough to eat. Please reconsider the portions.

The Bread and Cup is so much more than a soup and sandwich place.

I honestly don't know where to begin with the things they do right here.  The bread is delicious, and has a wonderful chewy, artisanal, European style to it.  It is the way bread is supposed to be.  Hearty, chewy, nutritious, and encourages you to slow the heck down and take your time to eat it.  Local meats, cheeses, produce whenever possible.  FANTASTIC!

Their Market Meals on Saturday are phenomenal, and are different every week depending on what great finds they have from that mornings' farmer's market.  They have a delicious pizza night, and also a pasta night.  I've also been lucky enough to have one of their hog's head feasts and it could quite possibly be one of the most delicious and memorable meals of my life.  They're innovative and passionate about what they do, and believe in simple food that takes a long time to eat and enjoy.  I love the attitude here-bring good friends and kick back and enjoy.  I always end up spending about two hours on most visits doing just that.

The only complaint I have is I really don't care for their soups.  I've tried so many, because it's hard for me to believe they would be bad (everything else is so perfect)!  Every time, I've been disappointed.  Other than that...I LOVE IT ALL!  Keep inspiring, changing, and sticking with the basics.

This is my favorite spot in Lincoln.  You'll find me at Bread and Cup every Saturday morning enjoy a freshly made cinnamon roll and french press coffee on the patio.  I frequently end up staying for lunch.  The executive chef and owner makes his way to the farmers market on Saturday morning, comes back to the restaurant with fresh ingredients and whips up amazing soups!  I recommend the fresh asparagus soup!

Bread and Cup is a fantastic idea!  Lincoln---you need to get out there and support this place!  We live in the middle of all this agriculture and Bread and Cup is one of the only places to utilize fresh, local ingredients instead of pre-made or frozen ingredients.  The homemade cinnamon rolls with caramel get 5 out of 5 stars!

Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner, you will not regret your trip to Bread and Cup!  Oh....and try their "Flight Night" on Tuesday nights---$10 and you can taste everyone of the wine's on their list!

I had a wonderful lunch here today with two of my California relatives.  I was immediately impressed by the stylish vibe and locavore philosophy.  This cafe would be perfectly at home in the SF Bay Area or New York, and it's delightful that it's here in Lincoln.

There was a slight delay and mix-up in the delivery of our order, but it was not a big deal.  The three of us very much enjoyed our sandwiches- turkey, tuna & vegetarian.  The breads are excellent and the cuisine creative.  I will definitely be back!

EDIT:I'm taking it back, leaving my previous, glowing review to let you know how much my opinion has changed. It ain't the same. I used to wish for B&C every day and now I haven't been there in over a year. From the hipster staff too cool to pay attention to anyone who's not a regular to the food not being the same quality any two times I go. We even approached B&C to cater our wedding reception and the response, while they offer openly to cater, was a condescending response that we weren't really good enough for them. It appears that Bread and Cup became too big for its britches and too pretentious for what it is. The quality and atmosphere is so far downhill it's not the same restaurant I once graded highly.

It could be good again, but right now, not so great.
    *******

Bread and Cup is, in my opinion, one of the best restaurants in Lincoln and a still-undiscovered gem in Lincoln's culinary rough. Sometimes there's not enough room for everyone during the busy hours, but if you can get in at a slow time this serves the restaurant well, as it serves the small deli, cafe feel. Intimate and warm dining, with absolutely fresh ingredients and an original and well-thought out menu. Affordable yet excellent wines compliment anything served. Everything they serve here is amazing, but I can not get enough of the pork sandwich with apple butter.

Do yourself a favour and stop by if you never have. In the summer, eat outside on the patio and watch the sun go down on the Haymarket with a belly full of artisanal foodstuffs. You won't regret it.

I am definitely a fan:  this is someting Lincoln has been needing for a long time and I agree that Lincolnites need to get out and support this place.  I need to remind myself, because it it tucked away in the edge of the Haymarket and I sometimes forget about it when deciding where to go for lunch!

First:  the bread.  Their bread is fantastic.  Just out of this world.  I cannot say enough good things about their bread.  They made a peppercorn loaf that I loved, and just today they had 3' long cranberry ciabatta loaves for, I think, $5.  You can buy it to go or to eat in with various sides.

Then, the sandwiches.  I love their vegetarian sandwich, though I know others who aren't as fond of it.  The carrots seem to be blanched so they are totally crispy but have a great flavor.  The oil / hummus / sprouts ratio is usually just right, and that is a hard one to pull off since I don't really even like sprouts!  The portion was just gigantic on the sandwich I had today, but in the past, maybe shortly after they opened, the portions were a bit different.  I think at the beginning they were finding their feet with the amount of "sauce" to put on the sandwiches as well.

Their goal is "simple," good food, and though they may have erred a little on the side of simple for Lincoln's tastes at the beginning, I am really impressed by the food and service each time I return.

I'm looking forward to attending one of their Saturday evening "market meals," a prix fixe (seems to be) four course meal made from all locally sourced produce and cheeses.  Speaking of which, they also have a lovely cheese selection all the time, and offer a cheese platter,  wine flights, as well as a good artisanal beer selection.

I like the minimalist decor - it fits with the building's architecture and their "simple" mandate, and it is complemented by the copious natural light.

The salads and soups haven't blown me away.  And, in the winter it was darn cold in there.  But I can say that I would rate it high on my list of places to go in Lincoln, partly because I really admire their mission and because their bread is so totally delicious!

If you are looking for a $5 meal you best look somewhere else. But if you don't mind paying for great food then you are at the right place. Bread and Cup has a simple menu with delicious offerings depending on if you are dining for lunch or dinner. The sandwiches are huge and full of flavor no matter which one you order, I suggest the roast beef with stout honey mustard but that is me. All the other ones are just as good though. All of the breads they make from scratch are wonderful and I have not had a bad one yet but have not tried them all either. I am a chocolate lover so the chocolate chibata bread they make specially on Fridays is fantastic. Get there early when it is hot and warm out of the oven and you will not be disappointed I assure you. If you wait too long though it is liable to be sold out.
They don't have a large dining area but big enough for a couple wanting to go out for a nicer more upscale dinner experience or if you are with a few friends and want to sample some exceptional wines the patio area is very nice for that on a warm evening.
The best part is they always try to use local, fresh ingredients which is nice to see. Some of these can also be purchased from them as well.
Another interesting service they offer is tutorial nights where they will teach you the art of making bread. I have not had the chance to partake in it yet but I would bet it is worth it.

The location is at the top end of the Haymarket so fer all you people who can't walk more than 2 1/2 blocks from yer parking spots in downtown Lincoln, there's plenty of parking.

Got dragged here again last weekend by a new female friend of mine.  She insisted that it was "fabulous".  Same pitiful experience as last time.  Unbelievably small portions of bland food with no taste.  You read it on the menu and it sounds like it will be great, then you get it a half-hour later and it sucks.  Slow service.  Ridiculous prices.  The soup here is a  joke -- I would take a can of Campbell's over this watery crap any day.  I actually made her pick up the check in exchange for me to not make a scene.  I was ready to freak out on every employee in the place.  I'm starting to think the other reviews on this site are paid for!  NEVER again.

Minimalist decor, minimalist menu, fancy stinky cheese (a plus), excellent porch for outdoor dining on summer nights with friends.

I've always loved the atmosphere here. It's a hip little European-style deli; something Lincoln desperatley needs. THEY ALWAYS USE THE FRESHEST INGREDIENTS POSSIBLE, and that is the best thing about this place. And you can taste it.

My girlfreind and I had "The Conversation", a bottle of an inexpenisve, but good, Vouvray, a healthy serving of the hummus and tomato pesto, and 2oz. servings of a bleu cheese and another white cheese, served with their whole wheat and white bread, which is baked fresh daily.

We loved the tomato pesto, although it didn't pair real well with the wine, as neither did the bleu cheese, which would have been better with a buttery/creamy chardonnay, but they were both very nice. The hummus paired magically with the vouvray, and although over-powered a bit by the pesto and hummus, the white cheese was good as well.

Then we had the banana rum bread pudding. Do I really need to say more? It was like the world's best banana bread with caramel sauce, powedered sugar and the slightest hint of carribean rum. If that doesn't make your mouth water something is wrong with you!

Overall, its great. The service, the food, the ingredients, the music, everything is top notch. But.....its a deli, your not gonna get 5 stars from me with something so basic.

We went on a Tuesday Flight Night and had the Slow Roasted Pork with barley and leeks, the Zucchini Noodles with Fried Hummus, the carrot cake and the chocolate mousse. The pork was AMAZING. Tender, slightly sweet with a hint of cinnamon, and just fell apart on the plate. Two of us had the pork - one serving was quite a bit fattier than another, but it was great nonetheless. The zucchini noodles are a standard on the menu and always tasty. The carrot cake was a new addition to the dessert menu. Cream cheese frosting was fantastic on it, as were the walnuts in the cake. A little heavy after the pork, but it was really delicious. The chocolate mousse is a must-get. Wow. Dark chocolatey, rich. Not a super creamy mousse, it seems like it had been prepared earlier in the day and put in the fridge, but it tasted great.

The only complaint was slight issues with the service. We walked in for flight night, and were immediately told (at 6:00 PM!) by the hostess that she hoped we weren't there for flight night.(!) After being told that they had *maybe* two glasses left and they weren't sure if they could make it through even the people who had ordered, we watched all of the other diners finish their flights and additional diners order them. Seems strange, as there were hardly any diners, for the special of the day to be out only one hour after service started. The waitress/hostess also seemed confused about what was on the board as we entered. We asked if any of the soups and/or sandwich were available for dinner, and she said that those were only there for lunch... as other diners were being served soup. Strange.

The menu at Bread and Cup has changed over the last year or so. It's less friendly for a group of diners - the night we were there, the only options were beef (3 different cuts), pork, or vegetarian.  If you were a chicken or fish eater only, you'd have to choose the vegetarian options.

Food is consistantly creative, fresh and tasty.  Service can be slow.

This is an absolutely fabulous cafe.  Artisan is great descriptor here.  It uses locally grown products to produce a menu of sandwiches, fresh salads and soups, appetizers, and dinner specials.  They even had a booth at the Haymarket farmer's market.  All this to go along with a good wine list, an amazing atmosphere, and a great location.  I cannot say enough good things about this place.  It is the best restaurant in Lincoln.  I will always stop by whenever I am in town.  I have had their excellent hummus, multiple soups, and a couple of their sandwiches that are better than any I have ever had.  If you love bread or soups, this is the place for you.

Bread and cup is a nice place. The decoration is what you'll notice. It is clean and modern. The food is table service and the menu is very, very limited . I had the beef sandwich. It was good, but nothing amazing. The best part of the sandwich was the caramelized onions and the broth/sauce.

The food is light. Most places would be hard pressed to call this a 'meal.' I dont eat a ton, but was left hungry after my sandwich.

For a sandwich, I didn't think the prices were horrible, but they were not cheap either.

The staff was very friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

WOW, What can I say about this place other than that was the most amazing sandwich and dark beer I have eaten and drank forever. Quaint bistro look and great everything fresh ingredients and they bake their own wonderful crustations of bread and it is also nice to know that some places still pride themselves on their service along with their food. Met my wife for lunch and we decided to split the Pork sandwich with garlic mayo and I decided on the Old Rasbuten dark beer and damn what a combo of flavors that was. If you are wanting to have a great sandwich and enjoy your company and feel like you are in a big city setting you will have to try this place and let yourself decide what city you want to be in that day..

My friend and I discovered this delightful coffee and sandwich shop in an article in the newspaper.  Everything is made fresh and is superb, from the rustic breads, desserts, sandwiches, soups and salads to the French press coffee.  Karen, one of the owners, makes us feel at home with her warmth and friendliness.  The roast beef sandwich is delicious with the garlic sauce and the balsamic vinaigrette dressing is simply the best!  Of course, the bread pudding is sumptuous and with the French press coffee, the cares of the world disappeared!  I would highly recommend making a point of going here, as the food is great and  they also offer wine, cheeses, and other  delicious offerings, as well as a patio for outside enjoyment.  Bread and Cup is a wonderful addition to downtown Lincoln.
