I was here multiple times during a conference at the adjacent Marriott. I was very pleased with the food. Highlights included the Iroquois sandwich, which is truly delicious and worth eating repeatedly (especially the bread!!), as well as their frosted sugar cookies, which were delightful.

The only complaint about the place relates to its insane logistics. There are so many counters, multiple registers at different locations, waiting areas, and lines that the place begins to feel like a mob scene. There's also not much room between tables either. Try to go during less busy times.

ok sandwich.  The restaurant itself was disorganized, and I waited over 30 minutes.

I recently visit the Bread and Company on West End for lunch.  It is in the same building as Barnes and Nobles and Starbucks - across from Centennial Park.  Parking, of course was a pain - but I found a spot in the garage behind, and they validate for 2 hours, so that worked out well.  I had never been here before, so I wasn't exactly sure how it worked.  There were several groups of people milling around, so I just asked.  Turns out, you fill out a sheet of paper indicating what you would like and they make it fresh for you.  I like the idea of that, but in practice it does not work well here.

The sandwich counter was completely disorganized.  The papers were scattered all around and there were no less than 20 people standing around waiting on sandwiches.  They also have a soup counter (no one was working at that counter), a hot food counter (again, no one working at this one), a salad counter, a bakery counter, and a separate area for drinks.  If you would like to eat, for example, a half sandwich and salad with a drink and cookie - you have fill out 2 pieces of paper and to go to 4 different areas of the store.  It took 23 minutes to make my chicken salad sandwich on wheat and another 8 minutes to stand in a separate line to pay for it. (I timed it).  I didn't have the time to wait for anything else. The sandwich was ok, but it's not worth the trouble to me.  probably won't be back.

My sisters and I wanted to sit down for a nice lunch together after visiting Centennial.  I thought Bread & Company would fit the bill perfectly, but we were disappointed.

If this business had the right staff, it would be a much better place.  The way you place an order here is not typical, so servers should be prepared to explain and help,  and be friendly about it.  That is not at all what we experienced.  I got the distinct impression that the employees were disappointed we were even there.  The food is good, and it's nice that you can customize your salad or sandwich just the way you want, but there's lots of places like that.  The lack of service was widespread, right down to the guy at the cash register that was completely thrown off by the fact that we were going to pay together.

I had a nice sandwich at Bread & Company.  It was on sourdough bread, and on it was chicken, avocado, sun dried tomato aioli, and some nice greens.

That was a pretty boring review of a sandwich, huh?  Well, though the sandwich (and tomato soup) I had were both fine at Bread & Company, I'm not running back to B&Co.  The ordering process is somewhat confusing; if you only visit B&Co. once every two years you have to be reminded each time what ordering paper goes where and where to pick up what item.

As for flavors - the sandwich was good.  Just.. good.  Maybe Bread & Company just has the misfortune that I ate there after I recently ate at our local A Matter of Taste, where I had not a good sandwich but a WONDERFUL sandwich.

I can see myself going in to B&Co. to try some desserts and pastries which were absent from my current visit.  There was a beautiful beebee crème brulée and vanilla panna cotta and other yummy delights for sale.

So to sum it up, the bread, and its company, are pretty good.

I've been here once, and  the salad I got was absolutely delicious. The cranberry-walnut croutons are amazing! The fruit tea was really good too, and I liked the mint that was infused with it. It gave it a nice, crisp taste. Perfect for a warm, spring/summer day.The place is clean, but there is not a lot of seating outside FYI.

When I went in, I was severely confused at what the heck I was supposed to do. I looked around and tried to see what I was supposed to do, but I ended up asking another customer who seemed in a rush, but gave me some quick directions. Granted, it was lunch time, busy, and people were hurrying to get their food. You check items off on a sheet of paper that you want to go into the salad, or you can choose one of their menu salads instead of building your own.

I handed it to the person who was making my salad. She didn't seem very happy, nor did she make very much eye contact with me. I was pretty excited about my salad as she made it, and she gave me a HUGE SERVING.  I was really surprised. She didn't say anything to me as she handed me my food. Maybe she was having a bad day? I got my drink and got in line to pay.

The cashier was extremely nice and friendly compared to the other girl. I paid ~$10-11 for everything. A little steep in my opinion. But the salad was amazing.

I was reading through reviews and came across Meredith C.'s review. And she mentioned that you're supposed to get a roll with your salad, but ask for it. Sometimes they don't give it to you.

    *pauses*

I get a roll!? I didn't get one. Man, I really wanted to try their bread too...

They also have soups, sandwiches, and other baked goods.

Overall, I really, really like their salad. But I don't want to pay that much. Service was not very friendly. And like everybody else said, it can be a little chaotic/confusing when getting your food, especially during lunch time.

I finally resolved to go in here and figure out the layout in order to purchase something, anything. And to add to my not-so-original Yelp list of eats on West End Ave. And ordering here was surprisingly easier than when I left confused and empty-handed last week.

For one thing, I went for breakfast. The first register had 4 people in line, but only 1 person was paying for herself. The other 3 were just extra warm bodies making the line longer than it needed be. So, it turned out that the first register nearest the entrance is where I should go to order a breakfast sandwich. I will have to come back to see which line to go to for lunch and / or the prepackaged meals.

I had the lox and bagel. While it was good, it was not spectactular. Definitely pricey -- over $10 for a multigrain bagel with chive cream cheese, a reasonable serving of lox, capers, onions, and diced cucumbers and tomatoes. It was served open-faced, which is probably a good thing since the capers and various veggies will start rolling out. And stupid me, I forgot to ask what kind of lox they use. Apparently, as of a few days ago, there is a recall of Vita Nova salmon, due to potential lysteria contamination.

The coffee was smooth. Did not give me a stomachache, which means that it was not strong.

In total, I spent $13+ for a bagel with lox combo and coffee. It's the amount I expected to pay at a Marriott/Hyatt/Hilton room service breakfast. Even back in San Francisco, the last time I ordered a similar meal, it was only $7 and change (and instead of coffee I had a cafe au lait and they piled on the lox).

I might come back someday to try out their cookies and pastries. And I would probably buy my own lox and my own bagels before I'd come here to try this particular meal combo again.

They do give cups for free water, which I needed because I accidentally had some of the capers (which I forgot to ask them to not add since they're too salty for me). Lots of seats if you come off-peak.

Although this place is expensive and the order/payment system is backwards, the salads are amazing and worth the confusion.

FYI, this place becomes inundated with sorority girls during lunch and dinner. I guess that can be a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it.

I find a lot of the other reviews on here really frustrating. Because I heart this place so hard that I can't make sense of how people can feel so negatively. So first I will acknowledge what I think *are* real problems here:

    1) The Setup. Yes, it's confusing. Yes, there has to be a better way. It would make much more sense to have one register for the custom food orders and another for coffee and baked goods. But wait! There is! Only thing is, it's not always open and it's still pretty damn confusing which one you should go to.

    2) The Coffee. It's terrible. I've gotten coffee here a couple of times, once regular coffee, another time a latte. Once my friend ordered a chai and I ordered a soy latte, and we seriously couldn't tell the difference between them. I don't know how this is possible. They have a big fancy espresso machine back there, but it seems like maybe they're using coffee beans to make espresso? Who knows. I suggest you stick with tea, water, or soda. Regular coffee if you must. It says online that they use Bongo Java. I'm going to have to try it again, as I've gotten it at the end of the day, and perhaps it was bad because it was sitting there too long.

But now, on to what this place is best at: FOOD.

Their breakfast sandwiches are ginormous and so damn tasty. You can custom build them on croissants, bagels, or any of their fresh baked breads. It's $5.50. This might seem expensive for two ingredients, except when you realize that it's 2 ingredients *in addition to* eggs (and you can get egg whites no extra charge).

The breakfast choice FTW, though, is the french toast. People, this is the best french toast I have had in my entire life, and a ton of food for its $7.19 price, which is totally reasonable for a breakfast entree. If you don't want one of the main breakfast things, you can't go wrong with their baked goods. Everything I've had has been incredible, including their desserts.

As far as the lunch options, the sandwiches are killer. To be honest, I've only ever had the farm bread, because it's so amazing I can't bring myself to order anything else. I crave the Fresh Mozzarella sandwich all the time, and that's my default order, but the Boulder Veggie is also good. And they do a 1/2 sandwich + soup or salad special, which is a little cheaper and still plenty filling. I would very much like to disagree with statements made about their food not being higher quality than places like Panera. For me, the difference is night and day. Bread & Co is high quality, with the focus on freshness, rather than completely shorting out your system by loading on as many flavors as possible. I would never choose Panera or Provence over Bread & Co.

A great option they have is their grab-and-go case, which stocks tons of sandwiches so you can cut out part of the waiting. Sadly I've never seen the Fresh Mozzarella in the prepared sandwich case. If they sold it that way, I'd probably be running in to grab and go far more often. I definitely recommend this place for brunches or late/early lunch and dinner. It can get very crowded with students around lunch, since it accepts Commodore Cash.

The most prohibitive thing about Bread & Co is the parking situation. This lot just isn't big enough for the amount of businesses here. If you can find street or meter parking, I recommend that. I've witnessed a screaming match between people vying for the same parking spot here.

Please try this place out and be willing to wait in line for a short bit.  Yes it can be annoying, but I promisepromisepromise it's totally worth it.

First time actually going to the store versus have catering brought to the office. I like the food and fruit tea...but this place is a logistical nightmare. 3+ separate counters where you have to order different elements from each one; fill out a silly piece of paper, then try and hear the guy whisper your name when it's ready. Then Vandy kids are lingering around picking up orders that aren't even for them.

Never going back just based on service (lack thereof) and no response to two emails sent via the Bread and Company website. Service is a key part of the total experience and it just lacks here.

This is a great local to Nashville chain (4 total) that serves up baked breads, breakfast, lunch and lunch-for-dinner items. Today was my first time here for brekkie and I will be back for more and will for sure try lunch/evening meal here as well. I had the egg whites, bacon and cheddar (create your own from a variety of options and breads) on whole grain. The sandwich was HUGE and super delicious. Counter self pick-up was pretty quick. There was no confusion about where to order, or where to pick up as I had read in other posts. The kitchen is open and the atmosphere is nice.

Only down fall of the experience, the cashier (Eric) was a little rude and impatient with me when I asked what the bread options were. He seemed to be put out that I would ask a question and handed me a menu with like 4 options. Clearly too much for him to just verbally explain to me. Outside of that, I did not have to deal with him and it  was not really an issue, but would have been nice to have a friendly cashier/order taker to improve the experience.

*UPDATE* Yes, I have been back...yes the food was great...and the staff, well still quite uninterested in any sort of customer service in the last 10 visits. Why do I still go? All about the food and it is counter (not full) service...but a smile and greeting and non snobby attitude would help! Going to write in to them about this!

Plain and simple, not very good.  The system for ordering is convoluted, at best.  The fact that you have to place a sandwich order at one counter, then get back into a long line to pay for the order, the same line that others are ordering breakfast/desserts, is ridiculous.

The quality of the bagels were mediocre.  I had the nova platter.  Let's say that they really like to use capers.  There had to be a whole jar on my bagel.  Of course, this was after I asked for no capers and no onion (onion was on it too, but much easier to remove).  I removed them myself as it took 30 minutes to get the order.

I don't live here, but I'd never return to this place if I did or if I visit again.

Like this Hillsboro location this place just confuses me. This location less so, though. There seems to be an actual flow and order in which you traverse the food decisions. I prefer their pre-made salads here.

I don't however like parking over here. It's hell. I don't mind it so much when going to Borders or Flemings because the garage connects to them. But, you don't have that luck here.

No one in Nashville should ever have to go to Panera again.

Soup, bread, pastries, and sandwiches at Bread & Co are so much better that it's not even worth comparing... I like the tomato soup and all of the various pastries well enough, but I really come here for the sandwiches.  Even if you can't find something you like on their enormous menu, you can always create your own from their vast array of toppings.  Goat cheese, bacon, fresh pulled turkey (not the crap sliced stuff)... you name it.  They have it.  Grab a menu on your way out so you know the daily bread selections; it's worth it just to have a tab on when the cheddar jalapeno is available.

I think this selection is a little more user-friendly than the Greenhills location, but that may just be my biased opinion.  It's larger and much more open.  I've gotten takeout from the Greenhills location and the food is -- of course -- awesome.  But the West End location is one where you could actually sit down for your meal.  It gets a little noisy and REALLY crowded at lunch (come early if you want a seat) but still... a great lunch spot.

    Two words: No, thanks.

Pros: The only reason why this place gets even one star is because I can't deny that the fruit tea is pretty darn good. (Also, my fiance likes the soup.)

Cons: Overpriced everything. Mixing sides that cost the same (i.e., $5000 for a spoonful) is strictly forbidden (but perhaps negotiable if the guy who works there actually dislikes the place as much as I do). The system of ordering food at different stations seems to make things look more efficient, but it actually makes ordering a toasted bagel with cream cheese on a Monday morning even harder than waking up that morning. (True story.) The cupcakes are cute, but they look and taste like they were created strictly for food photography.

Bread & Company is Nashville's locally owned version of Panera.  They have a huge menu of pastas, sandwiches, salads, and soups, with all the fancy fixings you can imagine - artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, pine nuts, bleu cheese, roasted red pepper vinaigrette... you get the idea.  Prices seem a little high to me considering that Bread & Company runs casual cafe style.

I would avoid the West End location around lunch time because it gets so crowded, and starts to feels like a college cafeteria.  The desserts and bread, especially the chocolate cake, fresh fruit, and challah (which they only make on Fridays) are all good, but I personally would rather get them to go than hang around the rather bland, corporate-looking cafe.  Also I'd recommend skipping the Bread & Company coffee, which tastes too bitter to me.

    Lunchline Logistics Coordinator Wanted.  Seriously.
This place is one chaotic clusterf*ck.  There are 4 different counters for receiving & ordering food, 1 "to-go" sandwich/salad rack, an awkwardly placed softdrink station & 2 more counters for paying the food, and not enough seating.  Due to all the disorganization, there are usually a few people walking around aimlessly trying to figure out WTF is going on.  You could try asking an employee for some help, but there's a pretty good chance they'll be rude about it or act like they don't know.  I'm pretty sure you have to be an enormous pr*ck to for them to even consider hiring you.   Parking is horrible.  Don't even try to squeeze into that front lot during lunch.  Park in the deck out back.

What about the food? Decent but overpriced.  I got a salad  for $9.84. Be sure & ask for your roll when you pay because they probably won't give it to you otherwise (it's supposed to come with it). Yes, it's a good salad, but no, it's not worth the parking & in-store chaos, and $10 to get  that salad.  I'd almost rather go to Arbys to avoid the headache.  Almost.

Fresh bread, pastries, sandwiches, soups are provided in spades.  Decor is spare but effective and elegant.  A busy venue with tonnes of students passing through makes for boisterous atmosphere, especially in the early fall.

I'd really really love to say great things about this restaurant, but I can't.
Its a small local chain, a competitor to the Panera's and Atlanta Bread's of the world, and as such it is a decent alternative, but only decent.
It seems that rather than pick one thing to do and do it well, Bread and Co tries to be a little bit of a neighborhood coffee shop, a little bit of a breakfast bistro, a little bit of a deli, a little bit of a salad place, etc. The inevitable conclusion is they do many things OK but nothing that well.
Even their set up - which is different at each of their four locations, is not done very well. At one or two of their locations, its flows well, but at the West End location, it certainly does not. You come in the front door and there is food everywhere, but only one place to pay. If you have been here before, you kinda know how to order and where to pay, but if this is your first time (as it was for the woman in front of me in line), it can be a painful process trying to figure out what and how or even where to order.
All in all, a decent but not great place to go for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

    *Nominee: Best Sandwich in Nashville*

Bread & Company is an outstanding delicatessen in Nashville.  They have every type of condiment, meat, veggies, and bread that you could ask for!  Also, the restaurant has salads, deserts, and many pre-prepared side dishes that are really tasty (chicken quesadillas, stuffed potatoes, pasta salad, etc.)

The menu includes many Bread & Co. signature sandwiches, but I prefer to utilize the plethora of toppings to craft my own signature sandwich!

Bread & Co. offers home made soups that are to die for.  The tomato basil is fantastic.  Don't miss the New England clam chowder which is sometimes a special.

You can grab lunch at Bread & Co. for under $10.00 (sandwich + drink)

Gets crowded during lunch.  Vanderbilt students can use their VU card!

I LOVE Bread & Co. Everything is so fresh. Their sandwiches are creative and stacked with pulled turkey, salmon salad, chicken, etc.(My favorite is the fresh mozarella sandwich with basil and pesto) The tomato basil soup is excellent! They usually have 3 soups every day, all available to be put in a bread bowl. There is a salad bar, as well, though I have not tried it.

Breakfast, too, is great. I always opt for an omelet (you can choose three fillings at the base price), but the pastries and muffins have also gotten high marks from my dining companions.

During lunch there are pre-made sandwiches and salads available in the fridge in the back.

However, it can get really hectic at peak hours and the line to pay is chronically slow. Nonetheless, I really think the food is worth it!

I've never really been happy with my meal here. It's like the food has a lot of potential to be good, and then it's just meh. let me start off by saying, I know the B&C from both sides of the counter. I've been a customer going on two years now, but just before that I worked there as well - for all of 5 days.
I'll say as an employee, this place blows. They've got a small-time corporate attitude and run a much tighter ship than i'm willing to tolerate. That being said, I'm also a slacker who's been fired from way more jobs than he can count. So take that for what it's worth.
However, as an employee, even during such a short stint - being the utter opportunist and free-food-glutton I am - I had the joy of sampling a great deal of things on the menu. The soups, the salads, the deli items (try the chicken tenders cold) - i don't think i ever tasted anything there that wasn't awesome.
As a customer, i pretty much always get the same thing and will say with the utmost certainty that if it's a curried chicken salad sandwich on cranberry pecan bread with lettuce, tomato, avacodo spread, sprouts, pesto mayonnaise, and kettle chips you're after - there is no better place in Nashville to get it.
One of the reasons I probably hated working there so much is that at B&C, quality is job #1. the bread, veggies, meats, coffee, etc, etc, etc are always fresh. Every inch of that place is cleaned and scrubbed every night.
The food is above all both tasty and healthy, but by no means cheap. This ain't Subway, and you're not getting a $5 footlong. A sandwich, drink, chips, and a cookie may set you back about $13. Should this deter you? Only if you're having trouble making rent. Otherwise, splurge a little. It's totally worth it.

Never have seen anyone famous here...Food is always fresh - the bread has a chewy crust and moist middle.  Portions are just right - not huge.   The cheese danish I ordered seemed to be a bit stale  and not enough filling.  Lots of tables and room to sit.  Lunch time crowds line up to the door - so expect a wait.  I always come back because I convince myself that the food here is healthier than eating at a greasy spoon.  No low lifes here.

Bread & Co is a staple for all Vanderbilt Greek students- myself included. However, as a former Panera employee, I have to say that I don't find the food any higher quality- but it is higher price (somehow...?!) The pastries/desserts are especially ridiculous in price. How Bread & Co. can charge more per cupcake than Cupcake boutiques in DC baffles me.  The food is good, and offers many options for soup, salad, sandwich, and varied meal options. It's a good local restaurant but nothing spectacular. I personally think they are only so successful because of a prime location.

I think this is the best place to get a sandwich in nashville. The salads are also very good. What I really like about Bread and Company sandwiches is that you can actually customize your sandwich and ask for anything in it. The bread selection is fabulous. My favorite bread is the one with nuts and cranberries. Their chicken salad sandwich is the best. Parking in this location however is very difficult.

It's OK, but their Green Hills location is better. It is definitely not a meal that will fill a man, but it's OK for a snack or light lunch. Opening Bread & Co. Vandy was a great business move for them.

Bread and Company has expanded across Nashville/Franklin with many locations to choose from.  The counter style operation gives you the freedom to decide from the vast array of options and is a great stop off for lunch.  There is a choice of all types of fresh unique sandwiches, prepared side dishes, salads, fruits, vegetables, and soups.  When downtown, this is a logical lunch stop while taking in the sights just a short distance from Vanderbilt (near Flemings & PF Changs).

Bread & Company has a fantastic menu of fresh bakery items, made to order sandwiches, soups, and sweets.  They have a very wide range of sandwich choices and on Sunday mornings, they have an awesome breakfast menu.

With this location being right next to Vandy campus, it can get extremely busy, so expect not to find a table right away.

The fruit tea is an excellent choice for your cold beverage and a few glasses of that ought to help you wash down a nice Monster Club sandwich.

Be forewarned, though, these are cheap sandwiches - they are certainly charging for the quality.  If you're in a hurry, there is a cold case of pre-made sandwiches that you can grab and go.  Make sure you ask the cashier for your chips, though!

There is parking available in front of the restaurant, but its near impossible to find a spot there.  You can park in the garage behind the strip mall and get your ticket validated for free parking.  Finally, if you're lucky, you can pick up a meter on the West End Avenue.

Also - the Google map that Yelp is displaying for this location is wrong.  This is directly across the street from Centennial Park and in the same complex as Fleming's and Borders Books.

So frustrating!  Cannot figure out where to go for anything --placing order, asking question about the confusing form, paying, getting your fountain drink-- and it is inconcievably crowded all the time, so you will just be wondering around in everyone's way for most of your visit while you try to figure out what the F&#* is going on.  The sandwiches are fine.  Way too expensive.  Totally overhyped --I'm over it!

First time visitor and totally open mind. I found a menu on the wall and knew what I wanted when I walked up to order.  This is the store near Belle Meade on the 100/70 split. I started to tell the man behind the counter what I wanted and without a hint of a smile or ANY personality he said," need your name" and said again like he was irritated with me and I smiled and said I was here for the first time and thought I needed to order first and I was sorry. No one was in line behind me so not busy at all. He looked dead  and like I had made a mistake. It was not clear where to pick up food and he never told me or where to get forks or anything. I asked some other people so I knew but he was not friendly at all. Food is expensive for sure but worth it to get a good sandwich and breakfast items.
