Great little place around the corner from my office!
LOVE the tomato soup. It's delicious. And comes with crunchy croutons. Can't beat that.
Also, Moxy, one of the baristas, makes a MEAN latte. And I mean MEAN. Highly recommend! -

The food is decent but overpriced..
First time I came, I got a Cobb salad to go (pre-made in one of the boxes). $10, which is what I USUALLY pay for a salad (still pricey IMO). It was good but hard to mix.
Second time I came, I just got lentil soup and a piece of bread. Like, $5 for a bowl of soup and $1 for a small piece of bread. With tax and stuff it was $7. WTH!!!!
The lentil soup was not that great and the bread was good but super greasy........
I know this place closer to my work where I can get a soup/salad combo with free piece of bread for the same price!
IDK..... I don't think I'll come again unless I want coffee because the coffee sounds good. -

Update on my last review!! 5 for the hot cocoa. It's still amazing, and I will always love it. Best hot cocoa I've ever had! The ganache is what makes it.
3 stars for the food, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars total. I'd still go back and maybe try something else, but the food I had today was just ok. I got the chili soup and B.L.A.T sandwich with small side salad. The chili soup was good, but the sandwich was just ok. I liked that the bread wasn't toasted to a crisp so it didn't destroy the roof of my mouth, but I expected better bacon (thicker bacon = better bacon). The salad could have used more dressing. In fact, I'm unsure whether my salad actually had dressing.
Will return and try some other things though!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Really? You changed the tomato soup recipe? But WHY??? It was already PERFECT.
I hate change for the sake of change. You have eliminated one of the last few reasons I would ever overspend in your establishment.

Camped out here to do a little afternoon work, and it was a great little cafe for it! No couches or anything - just a few tables and chairs - but because almost everyone else was taking their food to go, even during lunch rush (mysteriously, around 2pm), nobody was clamoring for a seat. Plus, they have free wifi! Ostensibly, anyway - I found the service a little shaky and switched to an internet card, but I don't know if that was their fault or mine.
They offer sandwiches, soups and salads, in addition to their espresso and hot chocolate offerings, and despite the many glowing words here about the tuna melt, I'd had too much to drink the night before to be able to stomach a tuna anything, so I went with the Piemonte sandwich, featuring portobello mushroom, tomato (allegedly - I didn't see any in there), basil, and mozzarella. Most of the sammies you can get cold or toasted, and on the rec of the cashier, I got this one toasted. Alas, it wasn't as good as it sounded - both the mushroom and bread were chewy and hard to bite off so I ended up having to eat with a knife and fork. And the balsamic vinegar overwhelmed the other flavors.
The creamy tomato soup, on the other hand, was very tasty, and it was indeed nice and creamy. Satisfying!
The superstar of the meal, however, was unquestionably my mocha, made with generous spoonfuls of artisanal chocolate sauce. Make sure you stir up your mocha - or hot chocolate - in case there's any blobs of chocolate left on the bottom! -

Today was a two cup morning.
And from this I learned two things.
1. Hot choclate tastes better in a ceramic cup verses a to go paper thingie.
2. Two cups of hot cocoa within 2 hours plus a walk up the hill makes me very lightheaded.
Still not noon, means there is time to make this a three cup morning. -

If you love bread and cocoa, you'll love....Bread And Cocoa. (Womp womp.) No, but for reals - I make it a point to stop by this place every single time I'm in SF. It reminds me a lot of one of my favourite cafes back home but with an even better selection of salads and sammies - almost too good. I usually have a very difficult time choosing what to order.
The other very amazingly cool thing about this place: the birthday club. Yes. You read that correctly. Well, OK, technically it's not a birthday club, but a loyalty club, and if you join, and you're actually, y'know, loyal, you get a free breakfast and lunch at B&C on your birthday. Hmm. I think I need to figure out a way to make sure I'm in SF on my birthday.
Check in on the Yelp app and get that 25 cent cookie deal. Try the brown butter chocolate chip. You won't regret it. Noooo, sir.Listed in: Four-Stars, Lunch Break, Cups of Coffee, Devouring Desserts, High-five for wi-fi!

Review from Zain D.
There are very few things that are simply perfect. Sinatra's one, Seinfeld's another and this little cafe in downtown San Francisco is the third.
Let's start off with the soup and freshly baked croutons. It's the warm-your-belly water-your-mouth tease-your-tastebuds make-you-forget-the-recession type of soup.
And the cookies? They're the super chewy melt-in-your-mouth finger-licking knee-weakening make-your-dentist-cry type of cookies.
If that's not "your type" of meal, you're in the wrong city.
So eat at, no....indulge at Bread and Cocoa, then listen to Sinatra's "I left my heart in San Francisco" on your way home (in the rain if possible) and when you get home, pop in any episode of Seinfeld...and just chill, in complete perfection.1 Previous Review: Show all »

San Francisco, CA
I love their corner location with all the windows. I could just sit here all day, sipping my latte slowly and watching the people and the traffic whiz by. And that's when my 15 minute break becomes half an hour....whoops!
Needless to say, Bread and Cocoa is quite cozy which is unusual for a coffee shop this large. It's ample seating and relatively quiet ambiance says "Come in and stay a while!"
On my first visit, I was a little confused because I was expecting to see a menu. They have a printed menu for food, but none for coffee/beverages. But no fear...just walk up to the register and tell them what you want.
If you want a cookie, grab some tongs! They've got lots to choose from - I'm a fan of the lavender oatmeal and the chocolate walnut. I've always gone during "off" hours so it hasn't been busy, but I imagine it gets crowded during lunch.
It's NOT cheap, but I suppose it's no different from all the other salad-and-sandwich FiDi shops. -
Review from Sofia R.
After lunch with a friend, I decided to find a cafe to sit and study in. It was a little bit of a walk, but I decided to go here.
I was greeted right away as I walked in. Very friendly and patient staff. After much thought, I decided to get a soy iced Ar'nella coffee (orange, cinnamon, and vanilla flavors). There was a check in deal so I got myself a lavender orange oat cookie as well.
The coffee was good. The flavors were subtle and not overpowering. Enough to make me want more. The cookie is the same. I enjoyed it as much as I did the last time I had it.
The place itself is a pretty good study spot. It gets pretty busy and sometimes, but it's not a big deal. I couldn't find any outlets, but I wasn't exactly looking. I left before I needed to charge my laptop.
Overall, cute place. I saw some things that looked kind of like alfajores so I plan to come back to try those out! And probably get another Ar'nella.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Solomon W.

Bread and Cocoa is the quintessential, nitty-gritty sort of "cafe." Was that somewhat of a contradiction? Probably. It is your typical sleek, not-as-lighted drop in eatery providing you with baked goods, a simple breakfast or lunch menu that does not consist of "eggs+2 slices of bacon+2 pieces of toast for $3.99" or "ham and cheese with chips and a pickle", respectively.
Rather, B&C is the neighborhood "refined" wannabe-French haunt that happens to do a whole lot of muffins and American breads.
My everything roll possessed a tad too much gluten, though I liked the sprinkling of poppyseed, fennel, etc. The blueberry muffin had that overprocessed oily moistness and did not boast enough blueberry. The bran muffin was good, though a bit tough and "wheat" tasting--shouldn't you have a softer texture with less surface area i.e. shorter baking time?
I don't recommend this establishment to you, but it is cheap! -

I'll tell you why I give 5 stars.
1- Sandwiches, soups, and salads are super flavorful. Very natural.
2- Portions are just right; not humongous like any other cafes that stuff you like a fat American pig (just sayin') with their watered down ingredients.
3- Pastries and cookies are to die for and keep you coming back for more. Very rich in flavor and not greasy
4- My favorite espresso drinks are their white mocha and Moxy macchiato
5- Friendly workers.
That is all. -

The cafe itself is pretty cute but the beverages that I ordered on two separate occasions just didn't satisfy me.
So, I haven't actually had any of their food, cookies, or whatnot. Just their Chocolate Chai and their London Fog. If you can't tell by these two choices, well, I'm a fan of tea. On the first occasion, I ordered the London Fog. It just tasted like plain old tea to me. And just today, I had the Chocolate Chai, since more people seemed to be a fan of that. I love chai but I could not find any hint of it in my $3.96 small Chocolate Chai. I kept tasting it and tasting it but to no avail. It was more of a mint-flavored cocoa. It was delish, I will give them that. It just did not taste like what it was advertised to be. That's all. -

I came here with V for a Friday lunch. Good choice since you can get a 25 cent cookie if you check in here as opposed to paying $1.85 for a really small cookie. I got a chicken pesto sandwich and V got a Cubano. Both of our sandwiches came with a freshly made side salad. My sandwich was alright, just your standard chicken pesto which came with a lot of pesto on foccacia. V took out all the pickles in her Cubano and remarked that her sandwich had a lot of meat in it. Our cookies were pretty good since they were warm and soft. I got the chocolate chip and V got the triple chocolate chip. I liked mine just fine but V said hers was too sweet. =/
I wouldn't mind coming back next time but there are still many FiDi places to try! -

There are tons of cafes in the FIDi. They're just mostly not open on Sun afternoon. So we trekked up a bit to hit this place before they closed at 5pm. Now I don't know about you but most cafes don't play the Deftones. Props for that. Got a solid iced chai to go and I was on my way to a sunny Sunday afternoon

Service was super friendly and welcoming -- the sun-drenched lunch spot is conveniently located near my office, plenty of seating to eat-in.
I highly recommend the tuna fish salad-- it was delicious with the right amount of mayo, celery, diced apples, and seasoning... I ordered the tuna melt, which comes with a side salad -- the bread is delicious and the sandwich melted in my mouth, so tasty. Slightly expensive for a sandwich, but getting a side salad was a bonus... would definitely go back. -

We stopped here for lunch since this look like my kind of place, bread and chocolate. We all ordered our sandwiches on focaccia. One of us ordered
the rustic Italian, I got the half caprese sandwich with minestrone, and my mom got the tuna melt. The focaccia was awesome, both chewy and toasty and oh so fresh. My soup was the best part, tons of veggies, instead of the usual noodle laden minestrone. My sandwich tasted great but i guess i expected to see some basil on my caprese. The portions were also a bit small for the price but the quality of ingredients seemed great. The mocha and cocoa we ordered on our way out where rich and delicious. Overall it was a very nice place to stop downtown for a quick bite. -

Finally had a chance to try out the coffee drinkys & here's the rundown:
Mochas are hot, super chocolaty, & creamy. I knew I was going to be in total luv as soon as I saw the barista using an ice cream scooper to plop the *real* melty chocolate in the cup! Absolutely delish! - extra shot needed
Lattes are equally hot & creamy as I suspected - again, extra shot needed
Prices are a bit on the high side - $4.25 for 3-shot latte & $4.75 for a mocha (ouch!)so I prob wouldn't make this place my every day coffee stop but for maybe a once a week treat, I'd def swing by!
*still* need to try that oatmeal!Listed in: I'm a Coffee Girl, In A Coffee…

My wife and I stayed in the Galleria Park Hotel, so this place was right under us. They had super fresh, made from scratch food and the cocoa was good enough to be showcased in the name. We were on the go so we shared a generous bowl of oatmeal a couple mornings. I really liked that you could add your own oatmeal toppings (golden raisins, coconut, brown sugar and almond pieces). I bet their other stuff is good as well, though I didn't get to try to many items. Will for sure come back next time in SF!

We came in for a late lunch and this looked like a great coffee and sandwich place. They have a pretty decent-sized menu; definitely had a lot of choices that caught my eye.
The cashier was friendly and that process was easy, but the actual fulfillment was a different story. It seemed chaotic behind the counter and it took quite a while, and this was well after the lunch rush (1:30, 2pm maybe?).
I chose the turkey cranberry sandwich, and I was not disappointed. While a bit on the high end for a fast service place at ~$10, I did enjoy it thoroughly, and it came with a salad. To earn another star it would have to have been a better value (and being a little quicker wouldn't hurt). -

Do you know what I love about this place? I love that they make perfectly designed hot chocolates. (See picture) Isn't that pretty?
I was pleasantly surprised to see that, so I had to take a picture.
This is now going to be my new favorite breakfast cafe in San Francisco.
It's definitely worth the detour before you go to work or go shopping.
The Baristas seem well trained, and I enjoyed my tasty breakfast sandwich.
I ordered the Haight breakfast sandwich which was perfectly toasted. Top quality, well served, and yes, the prices reflect that, but that's what choice is about.Listed in: Traveling to N. Cali from SFO…

I came here while waiting for the bus-it was really nice! It definitely got a lot busier around the peak hours though.
I had the chicken pesto sandwich-it was not bad, just a little too much pesto for my liking. I'm not the type of person that enjoys having my bread be dripping with olive oil.
The spiced chai was DELICIOUS, hence my reason for four stars. I usually only drink coffee, but this was recommended to me so I gave it a shot, and I'm happy I did! -

Popped into Bread & Cocoa during a break in an annoying standardized test at the Prometric center nearby. I had Yelped nearby lunch options and this was the closest (and most promising-appearing). I wasn't disappointed! AMAZING tomato soup with the fresh croutons, delicious half-sandwich, cute atmosphere in the bustle of the city, and I'll have to come back to try the famous chocolate chip cookies! It is as expensive as Boulange/Boudin type cafes but I found the food delicious and totally worth it!

Made a trip out to SF for lunch with some old study abroad friends. First time to Bread and Cocoa--pretty good experience. I was honestly stoked about the "check-in" free cookie bonus they have on Yelp.
The half sandwich + soup combos are always great. Got the first thing I put my eye on, tuna melt + chicken chili. Both pretty good, maybe a tad on the salty side but filling. Wouldn't go out of my way to come here but if it were a neighborhood destination definitely wouldn't mind it.
Good variety and decent price point. -

Geat looking coffee / sandwich shop. I picked up a chicken sandwich here and the chicken was extremely dry. On top of that the sandwhich was $10. Price to value just wasnt doing it for me. Seems like a popular place but im not in a hurry to gamble another $10.

Fantastic bread on the BLAT- just the right amount of crunch in the crust, yet airy and smushy on the inside - with a slight sweetness. And try the chocolate chai. It's killer!
The decor leaves something to be desired, but if you're just popping in and out on a lunch break, it's perfect. -

This is a nice place to study and get some coffee or tea. They have long tables and lots of seats.
I got the London Fog. I'd highly recommend this drink if you like Vanilla and Earl Grey Tea.
They got free wi-fi, you just have to ask them for the password.
The employees were very nice.

Bread and Cocoa is pretty close to my work so I stop by here for lunch in occasion. My favorite menu item is their Cuban Sandwich served hot, with a green side salad.
They also have a really good chocolate mint tea, I am not sure what brand it is, but I love it. It reminds me of those green and brown chocolate mints they have at restaurants.
I have also tried their orzo pasta salad and the BLT. They are both pretty decent, but I still prefer the Cuban with the green salad over any of the other menu items Bread and Cocoa offers.
This place gets pretty busy at lunch time, and unless you are getting a grab and go item expect to wait a little while. -

This may be the worst service in the city!! Never ever will I set my foot in this place again. Cashier (chunky dude with beard) told me to watch my manners - this was for being on the phone while paying for my order... I understand that by working at the coffee shop, you don't understand what it entails to have a real job.
They just gave me a reason not to pay ridiculous amounts of money for very mediocre food..

While recently visiting San Francisco, we had breakfast here two mornings in a row. I really enjoyed my Greek yogurt and fresh blueberries and coffee. This place seemed like a really comfy coffee place. The service was polite, friendly and fast. The food was great and seemed home made. I had to go to Coffee Bean one of the days and their food was not as good as Bread and Cocoa.

Review from Kat D.
With flavors and textures that juxtapose one another - soft and chewy bread followed by crisp greens, salty meat along with the sweetness of cranberries - every bite is definitely something to sink your teeth into.
You'll find yourself staring lovingly at your sandwich and with the 90's slow jams playing in the background, you can't help but to say out loud the very thoughts running through your mind "I love my sandwich."
Oops did I say that out loud?
PS. Free cookie with a Yelp check-in sweetens the deal. -

FREE cookie with YELP check -in.
This is a cute café. Lots of seating. They serve cold/hot sandwiches, salad, yogurt parfait, bake goods and drinks. I ordered a Chicken Pesto for $8.25 and it came with a side salad and the bread was toasted. It was so excellent. The free cookie was awesome. Soft and Chewy..perfectly cooked. I should have tried the Cocoa (since it's part of the companies name) but I really needed coffee. The coffee was strong...not for the weak hearted. LOL. I will definitely try the cocoa the next time I'm there. They need to work on their customer service. Not too friendly.
Recommendation:
Order off the menu, you get a side salad with the sandwich. The pre-made sandwiches do not come with a side salad. -
