Since I arrived in SD eight months ago, I have been devouring Bread & Cie's bread from the supermarket (Von's and Sprouts carry it) and at the Little Italy Farmers Market.
So today we trekked to the mother lode -- the bakery/shop on University Avenue in Hillcrest. It was even better than I expected.
In addition to their own breads and fabulous pastries, B&C has brunch, sandwiches, pizza, salads and excellent coffee in huge porcelain cups if you eat in. The staff was helpful, friendly and efficient. The tables were clean despite a huge turnover. And the prices were low.
I had a chicken sandwich on a half a ficelle (a skinny baguette) with dried tomato pest and arugula. For $5.95. My wife had excellent pizza.. They both were terrific.
We'll be back.Listed in: The good stuff., Five Star Nation

I AM IN LOVE WITH THEIR SOURDOUGH BREAD!!!!
There always seems to be a line when ordering, but it goes by really quick. Their bread selection is so vast that I have trouble deciding what I want to order. Everything looks so delicious! They have tons of breakfast choices and pastries! I always order their sourdough boule and something new every time i go. Their bread is always fresh and their prices are cheap. -

My soy latte is usually not hot enough.. I appreciate they are trying not to burn it but I wish they would get it right.. I'll probably just say something next time. Hey, I'm already annoying when I order them and ask for the barista to "shake the soy before pouring it". But it makes a difference and they are really nice about my request here :)
Breads are reason alone to come here. Quality bread and you can find it in so many stores and farmers markets around San Diego. Its really the next best to making your own. Obviously, if you have that skill, do that!
When they aren't busy, this brick and mortar location is a great spot for a coffee (though still not the BEST coffee in San Diego) and a treat with a friend. When its busy - order to go! Unless you like the bustle.. that can be fun sometimes too but if the wait for a table is anything like the parking situation... ugh!
Parking is super tough when its busy on weekend mornings.
Honestly, haven't tried the cafe food yet but I will! I heard through the grapevine they are skimpy on portions though.. not sure how accurate that is. Seems like they may be slightly overpriced if that is true.
Cinnamon rolls rock, and I'm a chocolate girl so to venture into something not chocolate says alot! In fact, every pastry is good. I'm dying to try flourless chocolate cake but its usually gone so fast! -

Passed by the area while going to Chocolat. Smelt soo good. The scent of fresh bread and a little bit of bakery goodies. It seems to be busy around lunch time. All sorts of wanderers come in here. It's located near a lot so people don't actually eat here, but go through here in order to get to the other side. I wonder if they did that purposefully to get people to come here. Either way, I have not ordered any bread from here (even if that's what they are known for), I just came here for dessert with one of my girls. We ordered cupcakes. I had the red velvet and she had the pistacio. We weren't as satisfied as we had anticipated. The cupcakes were very dry and they weren't fluffy at all. They seemed as if they weren't freshly baked at the time that we came here because they cupcakes were dry and hard. I would probably come back to try their specialties, but not for their desserts.

Review from Sharon L.
I come here for bread but get sidetracked (and too excited) when I see other baked goods. I can report that the croissant was great but I wouldn't try it again. It's nothing too extraordinary. Also, the granola was hearty, too sweet, and at nearly 5 bucks a pop for a rectangle. Now that my curiosity has been satisfied, I wouldn't order it again.
For my bread plate, I chose the levain, fig and anise, and walnut raisin. The fig and anise tasted a little strange at first but the flavor really grew on me. There were generous chunks of fig hidden inside the bread. The walnut raisin was the best one of the three because it was the freshest. Once I got home, I toasted up the levain and slathered on the homemade peanut butter. Heavenly. The peanut butter is homemade and textured and tastes great! The apricot preserves are quite good. If you pay 60 cents, you can get a thumb-sized amount of pb to go. Wish there was more of it.
Parking is ridiculous so plan to park 2-3 blocks away and you'll be set. You'll probably need the short jaunt, anyway, after all of that carbo-loading.
Service is wonderful. -
Review from Kate G.
I saw the reviews for Bread & Cie on Yelp and I figured that it looked good, so I should try it. So I came here today with hubs.
I had the grilled cheese and tomato soup. I really loved my meal, actually.. but I didn't see any chips in there. I would've really liked a bag of chips to go along with it.
Hubs and pastrami. He took a bite of the cucumber slaw and spat it out. It was awful.
They don't have fountain soda. So if you drink more than 1 glass of soda during a meal (many people do), you have to pay for each can.. not just a flat fee for a drink + a refill or two. No pickles.
Oh god. The cupcakes looked delicious.. so we had to try them. But the cupcake itself was dry and dense. It was like eating a hockey puck. The icing on top was terrible.. it wasn't the right kind of sweet. It was just way too sweet. Yuck.
Overall, we weren't impressed with this $30 meal. -

I have only been here once so this review probably will not encompass the entire rating of the bakery. Also I just ordered some of the bread to-go, but some of their sandwich options did look particularly good. I got a black olive roll, a french roll, a sourdough roll, and a sourdough baguette. All of them were about as good of bread as you can get. I make bread myself and I wish it came out this good. The flavor, the texture, everything about it is just near perfect. It is the best bread I have found at a bakery in San Diego, I just wish it was closer to home. I look forward to coming back and trying more, especially some of the pastries and desserts which looked fresh and appetizing as well.

I'll try to make this short and sweet. Everything was delicious! From paninis to croissants to macarons to soup. I can't wait to come back to try their breakfast menu!
For sandwiches, I've only had the panini, and although they say that all the sandwiches are pre-made, everything was so fresh and delicious. The flavors of the olives and capers paired so nicely with the salami. The balsamic spread added just enough tartness to the sandwich. I only got one large slice of salami, but the slice was think enough, and the cheese! Oh the cheese was so good. And the bread was just crispy enough not to hurt your mouth when you bite into it.
The pastries and bread look so delicious in their displays; I can never decide right away. I love they have things I've never seen like pistachio cupcakes, and cinnamon milk bread. Definitely coming back and trying more goodies! -

San Diego, CA
I LOVE bread and they do have a good variety of breads. However, I rather buy a loaf and make my own sandwiches at home.
They have a good selection of pastries, breads, desserts, sandwiches, and salads. I've had the chicken cobb sandwich and it was good, but it didn't blow my socks off and I didn't think it's worth $9. My husband had the pastrami panini and it was just a normal sandwich. The pickled cucumbers were not good. They were bland and needed more dressing or something.
We had 2 sandwiches and 1 can of soda for $20, which I did not think it was worth it. That's my own preference. If I'm going to a cafe, I'm gonna have to be really impressed. -

My review will strictly be on what I ordered:
Roasted Portabello Mushroom Sandwich - Yum. If you're into fresh, COLD, simple veggie sandwiches this is it. Super simple and clean.
Smoke Salmon Sandwich - Wow, totally unexpected with the addition of fresh mozzarella. Awesome and clean tasting sandwich as well
Creamy Tomato Soup - Tangy w/ just enough 'cream' to it. I'm glad it wasn't saturated with cream as many other tomato soups tend to be. The hint of basil shines through really tying the flavors in.
Mint Chocolate Macaron - Could've worked on the texture of the meringue, but the flavors were spot on.
OVERALL: Great place for a quick and light lunch. I went with the 1/2 soup 1/2 sandwich combo.
Like I always say, YOU WON'T KNOW UNLESS YOU TRY IT FOR YOURSELF!! -

Lord, thank you for Bread & Cie. I bought a loaf of jalapeno + cheese bread, and next thing I know, I ate HALF before I got back onto University Ave. YES, that FAST. The macarons are delicious! The tomato soup + grilled cheese was out of this world. Can't wait to try more!!!!!
Good to know, especially in Hillcrest area, there is a parking lot that you can park there for 1 hour (does not require validation), any time after that you'd have to pay -- but seriously, how many GREAT restaurants have free parking for an hour?!!!! -

Well. Bread and Cie has overhauled their menu, which I can't say I'm too happy about! No more Caeser salad, no more Shrimp Louie (except as a special, I suppose,) and no more cheese platter. A few other things were missing, but I can't recall, I think I was a tad shell-shocked as I was shuffled along in line (you know how it is in there... like being aligned for duty up at the counter...) and I just stared up at that weird new menu and went with the old favorite - the salmon platter.
But I miss the old salads!
I am glad that they feature the Salad Nicoise sometimes as a special, and the Chicken Curry soup as well. But still, boo that they've done away with some old faves. Were they just not popular enough? Is there a salad clique somewhere in that kitchen that kicked out Caeser and Louie? Were they outdated, did they not wear the right dressings?
At least they have a proper salt and pepper grinder set up near the water pitcher at the front now. (YAY.) One step closer to having one at every table! =)Listed in: Best of the 'Crest, Height of the Heights!

Luckily, I'm not a breadie, otherwise I may possibly go absolutely mad!
Croque Americana...or breakfast panini...sliced egg, crisp bacon on lemon pugliese bread...huh? With pepper Jack cheese....this sounds odd...I love all those things seperately but would I still love them in a pressed mess of a sandwich....the answer is yes...over and over again....
I love everything here....It's in my hood so it's a normal stop. Great selection of other pastries and sandwiches...and its next to Pete's, what more could you ask for? -

Anyone who lives in San Diego knows that Bread and Cie does not disappoint, but did you know they have a French Metro Tea service EVERYDAY from 2-5pm? It is splendid! A friend and I got to experience this earlier today. A great mix of sweet and savory and accompanied by delicious tea (I had the cherry rose). The three-tiered stand they bring to your table has a great assortment of delicate finger sandwiches, scones, macaroons and other pastries...and for an extra $4 you can get champagne!!!! I definitely recommend this tasty "Frenchy" experience!

One of my favorite breakfasts ever!
Arguably the best steelcut oatmeal I've had - wonderful cinnamon flavor with nuts and cranberries. The breakfast special of poached eggs & bacon in whole wheat baskets was a piece of ingenuity and tastiness. Topped with a touch of maple syrup - bliss! Can't wait to come back.
Tip: arrive early. -

There's something wonderful about being enveloped in the smell of freshly baked bread. Whether you're stopping in to pick up some loafs or coming in for breakfast, Bread & Cie has a mind boggling turnaround on its service. There's not a lot of seating, but don't let that deter you for what's sure to be an amazing meal. I ate breakfast here two days in a row because I just couldn't wait!
Prices are affordable, portions are sizable, and food is delish. You will certainly be able to find something on the menu that will pique your interest, so get going and try them out already! -

Well, I always go in thinking I might branch out and try the other items on their menu... but the fig & prosciuitto keeps calling out to me. It is such a perfectly balanced spread of sweet and salty with a je ne sais quoi exotica that I fail again and again in my mission to try other things at Bread & Cie.
The only other competitive sandwich shop will have to be Devon & Blakely of the East Coast. My, aren't we lucky to have this little cafe in San Diego. :) -

Something new at Bread and Cie--tea! With little sandwiches and pasteries, just like the big hotels, only cheapter--about $17, including tax. Everything was delicious, and there was enough so that we couldn't finish all if it and took some home for later. Loved the cocnut tea.

Disclaimer: I haven't had any actual bread here.
I haven't ever needed to.
My first experience coming here involved brunch. They set me up with some cold russian soup and a light snack. Genius move, it was creamy, a little thick, and very filling.
They also provide various legendary artifacts. Foods that will make your friends love you and your enemies become your friends. I'm talking about their granola and their macaroons. I'm talking about honey rolled oats and corn pops. I close my eyes and see pistacho peach macaroons, flaky and soft and sitting on my tongue. Now you need to go out and get some. -
Review from Anna E.
3.5 stars. I've been here several times and it's solid, but I feel like every other time it just lacks a little something. Maybe it's portion size, salt, flavor, sauce?
I've had:
--Smoked Salmon Platter: salmon, dill spread, tomato, red onion, cuc, capers...it's a little light on the salmon, but good.
--Potato soup: pretty bland
--Californian Muffuletta: salami, provolone, roasted red peppers, red onion, olive tapenade, tomato, basil on ciabatta...kinda dry.
--Roasted Portabello Mushroom: roasted portabello with zucchini and onions on rosemary/olive oil bread...DRY.
The ingredients for all the sandwiches sound amazing, but somehow it just doesn't all come together. I'm still waiting to be blown away. I like the effort and the ideas, so I'll keep trying. Service is typically very cordial, but I have been waited on by a crabby pants or two. However, once I had a guy that commented on my BF's MN hat and he gave us a free cookie, so I guess that equals out the crabby pants. -

I learned of this place from a random local while in town running a race. I can't possibly say enough good things about it. I might come back to San Diego just to eat here again. Everything about it was fantastic: the food, the ambiance, the people. I ate some sort of delicious warm breakfast "quiche panini" with eggs and fresh veggies on the most beautiful foccacia ever, and had fantastic coffee with it. I took home a bag of biscotti -- they have a whole buncha flavors -- which was perfectly crisp but not hard as a stone. I gifted a friend with macarons - an assortment of properly perfect french gems -- and ate a cupcake later (mildly disappointing - not as good as everything else). I want to go back again and again and again.

Stopped by for lunch. It was okay 3.5 stars.
Service is friendly but my grilled cheese sandwich was burnt. Tomato soup was great though. My girlfriend got the salmon sandwich with chicken vegetable medley. But her sandwich was cold - not sure if that's how it was supposed to be?
Bought a lot of baked goods, so far only tried the lemon tart - which was good just a bit too lemony for us.
Will drop by again though! -

Review from Kiki H.
I will preface this review by saying that I did not try things they are known for. I have tried many of their loaves before and they are great. This time, however, a friend chose the spot to eat, and being on a diet, I was forced to have a salad. I chose the chopped salad which had chicken, bacon, scallion, avacado, and was dressed with a spicy/sweet dressing.
First, i thought it was kinda pricey for the amount of chicken and avacado on what was primarily just a mound of lettuce. Second, I didn't find any tomatoes on it....which according to the menu should have been there. Lastly, I had no idea that the dressing was supposed to be "sweet/spicy" until I looked up the menu for my review. Sweet and spicy, huh? Coulda fooled me since it tasted like a regular vinaigrette.
While the pastries and breads caught my eye and looked delicious, I am not sure I would come back. I know that I tried a salad from a bakery, but come on, is it too hard to make a decent chopped salad? -

Great, but Pricey and Strange Extra Charges
Over the years, I have eaten at B&C so many times. I love the food, the lattes, the coffee, the macaroons, the atmosphere, all of it! But lately, something's been bugging me. When you ask for avocado added to a basic green salad, which is $5.50, you are charged a whopping $2.50 extra for a half of an avocado. Maybe this bugs me so much because I've poured so many dollars into the Bread and Cie coffers, or maybe it's because you can actually buy a WHOLE avocado for $1-$2 at retail prices in the grocery store. I'm sure the owner of Bread and Cie gets a better deal than that considering the volume he must buy. There's also a weird charge for substituting the baguette for a roll. It might sound petty, but over the years, as you pay all of these extra little charges, it starts to wear on you. Oh, and before I forget, that pat of butter? That will be 15 cents please. -

San Diego, CA
Food is a four BUT service is a two.
After being bamboozled by the complete lack of organization in this cafe I ordered a salad with pecans, dried cranberries, goat cheese and a cranberry dressing. I added on a slice of Jalapeno Cheese bread.
The salad was well proportioned with a lot of greens and a good amount of pecans, which shocked me because usually you get about four, and I ordered the dressing on the side so it wasn't overloaded. The dressing had incredible flavor! I truly enjoyed it but the bread O MY the bread. If I could I would poke a hole in the Jalapeno Cheese bread and eat my way out. It was soft inside with a chewy exterior, every bite had flavor it didn't need any butter or spread at all. Also the bread arrives to your table within minutes so there is no need for an appetizer (love that)
The set up of the cafe would be my only complaint because it is not newcomer friendly. If you don't already know the set up of it you will literally be pushed to the side by regulars who already know the routine. In case you are new, go to the right and snag a menu QUICK then get out of the way! You are supposed to choose your food and then pay, but if you are experienced apparently you can skip that part which no one informs you of. -

I had the breakfast sandwich and I ordered it without bacon. The lady was nice enough to offer replacing the bacon with avacado free of charge. I would have never thought to ask so I appreciate the offer. The sandwich was delicious. The orange juice is fresh and the best I have had in a while.

Eat here two days in a row - it will not be three days in a row:
Foods really good - what they need to work on is their attitudes behind the counter. $7.50 for a Grilled cheese and nobody can explain why the grilled cheese and soup are $7.95 and the sandwich alone is $7.50. It was great, but the cost is prohibitive.
Today I had the mozzarella and roasted pepper sandwich - another great one, but didn't realize till after I left that they flooded it with onion that I didn't want. Troy behind the counter was bugged that I asked for a glass with ice for my soda. Rolling eyes everywhere and clerks that didn't even know I was standing there for quite a while because they are busy socializing.
Molasses cookie - stale!
I was an inconvenience. All that attitude leaves a bad taste in your mouth no matter how good the food is. -

Oh, Bread & Cie, how do I love thee! I really do love this place...the food, the atmosphere, the food.
I always have such a hard time deciding what to order because everything is good. I call their tomato soup "crack soup" because it's so good it's addicting. The picnic lunch box is great to pick up before heading out to Balboa Park or the zoo. The basil pesto & gouda cheese sandwich is amazing, as well as the brie & honey panini and turkey pesto panini. The dessert case...I want one of everything. Definitely recommend the macaroons and oatmeal cookies.
There is a parking lot, but it is small and hard to find a spot so you may have to circle a few times. Seating is also limited so be prepared to wait for a table. -

This review is long overdue. I spend way too much money here!
Everything here is good.. it's a real French bakery and the pastries aren't too sweet, and always very fresh. I love the Bavarian mousse cake, wish they had it everyday , when I see it I order three slices to go, and the saffron peach pie is great! I also love the zucchini muffins too, the macadamia cookies.. The chocolate croissants!
The service here is top notch, also, everyone, including Aaron, Lorraine, Daniel, Frankie.. they could not be sweeter if they ate all the pastries themselves.
Lorraine and Aaron especially treat everyone like "family" and keep me coming back!
On the savory side, the lemongrass chicken soup is great, and the turkey sandwich has an amazing spicy russian dressing.. the bread! The tomatoes!
Over Xmas they had a pumpkin, walnut, cranberry and raisin bread.. I made some yummy french toast with it. Why not have this all year? It's time for pumpkin to come out of its seasonal shell!
On the could-be -improved list, the order accuracy when you get a newer employee could be better, I've had to call in missing items a couple times (They're nice about it: "Just let us know next time" Tip: ask for your receipt!)
(4/14 update: when I visited a couple days ago, the fruit bowl had improved.. the crunchy honeydew was gone and some yummy blueberries added,, thanks, guys!)
Recently, I asked the gal whether the curry soup of the day was cream based, or broth based.. boy did I get a blank stare.. and silence.
The last thing is could the order taker write a little clearer so the cashier doesn't have to decipher the order.
Seems like a laundry list, but it really isn't.. this place rocks!
This is a destination bakery, my favorite place in San Diego in any category, and a must see if you're in Hillcrest! -

I had the vanilla cupcake with mango passion buttercream and it was frankly terrible. Stale, flavorless cake topped with plastic tasting frosting. The Chai Latte was weak. It's a great location, the staff were pleasant, and I like that the patio is dog-friendly. However, due to the disappointing food and tea, I don't plan on returning.

We went here for breakfast.
Here's a quick run down of what was ordered:
The sausage and chicken quiche- first off let me say I am not a quiche fan, don't even remember the last time I had quiche. Unfortunately I don't think my experience here has converted me. It was okay, something that went in without making me cringe, but nothing that made my taste buds sing : /
The Pesto Turkey Panini- This panini was really good! My complaint: yes there is a complaint, is that it was so small! For nearly $9, I really had expected something bigger.
I think I'd rather head downtown next time and enjoy a sandwich from Con Pane Rustic Breads and Cafe. Their turkey cobb sandwich is super delicious, and the portion would totally eclipse this bakery's miniature panini. -

I heard that this is one of the most popular eateries in Hillcrest...but damn it's a little pricey. It's like a rich man's Panera Bread. I rode my bike all the way from Kearny Mesa and stopped by this place for lunch. I had a roast beef on sourdough with a decent amount of horseradish, watercress, and orange-marinated shredded red cabbage. It's not that bad, but it costs me almost $8. I could've gone across University to get a foot-long roast beef sub at Subway for $5. Also, I had a pint of Trumer Pils to wash it down.
I checked out the artisan breads and there are a lot of loaves that you could feed the starving children in Africa...twice! But I don't think they want a loaf of bread with what they consider "unfamiliar ingredients". Also, the service was great. -

Enjoyed the afternoon with their new French metro tea service for only $15.95! I had a pot premium white coconut creme tea, currant scone with clotted cream and house jam, 4 savory tea sandwiches, seasonal berries, and 4 French pastries! My favorite desserts were the chocolate ganache cupcake and a delicious french macaron!!! That was the best macaron I have ever had! What a great deal and a delicious way to spend the afternoon. I'm so happy that Bread and Cie (my favorite local cafe) has afternoon tea since it's one of my favorite things to do and I didn't even need to make a reservation for it. I'll be back again soon!

Cold hard fact... it isn't dinner at our house unless a french white baguette from Bread and Cie is at the table. Their bakery treats are absolutely delicious and give me hope for mankind... okay, that's a little over the top, but they do always put a smile on my face. The employees are friendly and helpful. You can usually tell they are happy and proud to work at this delicious establishment.
If I were to be a whiner about ANYTHING in reference to Bread and Cie is the parking... However, that same complaint can be applied to many business in San Diego. So i don't hold that against them. :-) I DO want prospective customers though to beware 'no parking' signs. In the Hillcrest area these signs are NOT joking and you will be towed.
Luckily for me, if I can't make it to Bread and Cie's actual location there are several locations around town that also carry their products. Next time you are making a pasta dinner, skip the freezer section for your garlic bread and pick up a french white baguette or seeded sourdough from Bread and Cie... you WON'T be disappointed. -

French macaroons, amazing. This is what keeps me going back. Everything else is also very good but they have the best macaroons. However, service... all the girls that work there are pretty rude. The guys are pretty cool. Five stars for food, minus two stars for the service.
