Review from DC Dad M.
Washington D.C., DC
It's a very nice atmosphere and the place is always jammed for weekend brunches. We've taken our family there for years - more since Krupin's closed. The food is very good and some of the wait staff has been there for 20 years+.
I read the review referencing the poor service - we haven't encountered this problem but keep in mind when you have great food and nearly every table is taken, you're not going to get your meal in five minutes.
The omelettes are fantastic, the coffee is surprisingly delicious, and the fresh bread is excellent. -

The food here is quite good -- very nice breakfast options, whether you prefer savory or sweet. The service, however, is mediocre at best. I've had breakfast/brunch here with medium-sized groups a few times, and the wait-staff is not attentive (despite that there are usually a lot of them), orders are rarely delivered at the same time, and there is usually at least one incorrect order delivered every time.

This place is absolutely amazing.
The food is incredible. I usually have the Cuisine-A-Gogo, which is a croissant with cheese and either turkey bacon or turkey sausage. I've had the paninis and they are also delicious! All of the food is filling without leaving you with that bloated feeling that often accompanies a trip to the diner.
The interior is simple but still gives off the cafe vibe. The coffee is outstanding and refills are always quick.
I think my favorite part of the restaurant, however, has to be the pricing. Everything is so cheap compared to the quality of the food. You've got to come here! -

Delicious, sophisticated breakfasts and lovely pastries and ambiance too. A great place for brunch or a long sit with something hot and something sweet.

The Ham & Swiss german-style pancake (crepe) with honey mustard is delicious! Very relaxing place - lots of people getting brunch with friends as well as people reading with a cup of coffee. Also is a great place to get a cake for a special occasion. Medium sized cakes are about $15.

With a name like bread and chocolate, this place should be amazing -- yet it feels less like a bakery and more like a diner that happens to serve a few desserts. We had lunch here after a full morning of apartment-hunting and we were starving. I had the salmon salad, which was just edible (the salmon was actually far better than the salad -- the salad dressing was oddly bitter, as was the cucumber, and the greens weren't exactly fresh). We also shared a chicken panini, which was equally unremarkable -- all of this to say, Bread and Chocolate doesn't do anything to offer refined food (why not add some nice veggies and a cool aioli or pesto or avocado to take a boring panini and make it a bit tastier?).

Bread and Chocolate is one of the best cafes in the Washington area!
All of the entrees and pastries that I've had here have been fantastic. Their hot chai is AMAZING; I have a friend from Texas who won't leave the DC area without stopping by B&C once for a cup (or two) of chai. =) There are a few qualifiers: I wouldn't recommend this place if you're in a hurry or have a large group. You'll have a better experience if there's only 1-3 people and y'all are in a leisurely mood. It's the perfect place to catch up with old friends over a cup of hot coffee or chai! =)
The Connecticut location is my favorite, followed by Alexandria, and then M Street. M Street's at the bottom of the list because the manager, while extremely capable and pleasant, always seems to be pushing customers to leave so more people can come through. Connecticut and Alexandria are more laid back and friendly. -

Good for lunch. Accommodating for larger groups. Baby friendly. Service a little slow but friendly.

I've only been here once, but what I had was pretty good. I got the hummus which is generously served on a thick slice of awesome multigrain bread, topped with four black olives. It comes with a small mesclun salad, yummy!!

i wanted to love this place. i liked it. the chai latte was amazing. the salmon benedict was yummy. the place felt like a diner though, but didn't mind. however, not long after eating there, i started to feel sick. nearly 2 days later, i'm still not feeling so great. maybe it was a coincidence. or maybe i've got salmonella poisoning. if you don't see any action from me soon, assume i've got eggs coming out of my mouth. yes, kind of like the crew and passengers on Airplane.

Only good if you know what to order!!! I ordered eggs benedict and the eggs came out cold and bland with a haphazard muddle of hashbrowns and the afterthought of cantalope. However, my friend ordered the french toast with apples on top. I tried a bite and it was amazing especially with the cream like topping they put on the side! Service was mediocre just like the pastries. Although brunch here is a couple dollars cheaper than most DC places, the quality isn't as good. I'd say only go here if you don't feel like waiting and don't feel like walking towards Dupont or Georgetown.
