5 reviews for Brea 8k Classic
I'm excited to see other reviews for this race because I think it's totally worthy of a review.
First off the $25 (early registration) entry fee is a steal! Recreational races like these, even 5K's, have become more expensive than what I remember. Almost ridiculous, but the Brea 8K race is a true bargain considering all the goodies you get AND the amazing food spread that is provided by the local restaurants.
I have never seen a food spread that big after a race. In fact, the most "food" I've seen after a race is a large pile of bananas, orange wedges, and half-bagels, and occasionally you'll get some sample power bars, but this race had pizza, pasta, chocolate fondue, Jamba Juice, salads galore, pastries...even Claim Jumper's Motherlode Cake made it into the mix! They seriously had so much food, and it never ran out. I will say, however, that eating that kinda stuff *immediately* (like within minutes) after running 5 miles isn't that appealing, at least not to me. Actually, I physically couldn't...I think it would've made my tummy hurt, so I only had a few bites of stuff but I did enjoy a couple of the mini Jamba Juice smoothies they had, and of course some fresh fruit they had laid out.
As far as the race goes, it was pretty awesome. Though on the majority of the course, traffic wasn't completely blocked, the one lane open for drivers didn't really seem to pose too many inconveniences for the runners. The cones safely blocked off the lane in which runners were supposed to run on, though okay, I did step outside the cone a few times--keeps from almost falling over the people that stop abruptly in the middle of the road to tie their shoes. =/
It's a relatively flat course save for the one, kinda steep, but short hill that managed to slow me down a bit; but what goes up must come down, so you can make up for slowed time on the downhills! Though, I'm by far a speed racer, I was proud of my own time. Yay!
Since it's a small community racing event, they don't utilize the fancy mile-clock markers and time chip finishes, so don't expect fancy schmancy high-tech stuff to mark your finish time. Just use your $12 Target Timex watch, like I do. :)
This is definitely a race I will do next year, so long as they don't raise the price!

I love this race! It wasn't one of those races that you had to get up when the owls are sleeping. The race starts at 8am and you can do same day registration for only $5 more. But if you are an early bird like me, it's only $25. I love these small time events, I just hope the Brea 8K stays this way. I actually parked at the same lot as the exhibitors. Even though I stayed a bit later, manage to score a few more goodies
What was good:
Meeting up with Yelpers Amy K, Take T, Erica C, Frank K, Steph W, AJ K, Henry H.
Eating more calories than you burn from Jamba Juice (small drink), Hot Dog on a Stick (lemonade), Cabo Grill (tacos), Fuze (health drinks), The Melting Pot (chocolate cake &strawberry), Tacos and Co (tacos of course), Pasta Bravo (spaghetti and lasagna and they gave out expired coupons? WTF?), Claim Jumpers (cake) and CPK (salad) . I didn't see Cinnabon. Oh, thank you Ralphs for supplying the water.
Cost was only $25.
What was not so good:
The cops that just stands there. Seriously, someone give them a broom
The course cones that are placed in the narrow roads.
They were a bit unorganized at the finish line since it wasn't chip timing.
When you see little kids pass you by and they are wearing hi-tops.
I would totally do this again! It was a fun run, just enough to get your heart pumpin'.

Despite the rain this morning, the Brea 8k was a really good race. This was my second year participating, and even though the weather wasn't ideal, we still got all the food and goodies we were promised, and there was support all along the course.
It's not the easiest race (who knew Brea was so hilly?) but the nice downhills make up for the uphills, which aren't terribly long. The distance is about 5 miles, and they had three water stops along the way.
To me, the best part of running is always finishing the race. And after the Brea 8k, not only do you get the great feeling of accomplishment, but you get food! Because of the rain, the food area was moved into a parking garage rather than having it in the lot like they did last year. At least ten restaurants participated, including California Pizza Kitchen, Cinnabon, BJ's, the Melting Pot, Olive Garden, Tacos & Co, and Pasta Bravo. I personally ate a danish, Thai salad, two pieces of pizza, chocolate fondue, and drank a glass of lemonade. It sure beat the normal banana and orange slices at a typical race! Plus we got a t-shirt and a goodie bag filled with discount coupons, all for the low, low price of $25. Score!

This was a fun 8k run. i think that works out to 4.6ish mile. the registration was cheap, there was a good bag with t-shirt and a lot of food provided by local restaurants afterwards. the course started and finished at the brea mall and had some small inclines. the only drawback is i wish this was a chipped run but i can't really complain since the fee was only $25. oh the best part was i met my first group of yelpers (Amy K, Take T, Erica C, Frank K, Steph W, AJ K & Pete S).

A nice little community-organized run that's long on fun and short on hassles. There's plenty of parking in the Brea Mall lots, and same-day race packet pickup's always nice. It's a pretty cheap event at $25, and you get a t-shirt, goody bag (with a $5 coupon to A Snail's Pace running stores, my fave), and lots of food supplied by local restaurants. Which I didn't really take advantage of because by the time I got into the food area there were long lines everywhere and I didn't feel like waiting around. But I definitely want to do it again next year and I'll know to make a beeline for the food area as soon as I'm done! The course is a bit hillier than what I'm used to, but not too bad. It does give you an extra sense of accomplishment, I think. Don't count on a giant crowd of the good people of Brea standing along the course cheering you on--most people are still in bed or getting very annoyed trying to turn in/out of driveways and whatnot waiting for all the racers to go by. Saw a lot of Yelpers out there, which was great--hope to see all of you again next year! On my way out I saw the kids doing their little 1k or whatever, running around the parking lot; that was pretty cute.
