The food is definitely not the best for you, but it's soooo good.  A guilty pleasure.

The top favorites for me would be the burgers and the homemade chips that they have.  My kids love the chips.

For us, this place is for a quick fix after a really bad family dinner or late night munchies.

I stopped by here on my errands and decided to try a burger and see what everyone is talking about. I liked the grilled onions and the fresh taste of the burger, but the crinkle cut fries were mealy and blahh. I threw them out.

Staff was friendly and I might stop by in a pinch, but I don't think I will be craving Bray's anytime soon!

I recall Bray's as a frequent 2 am stop. I wasn't crazy about the place but my drinking buddy was. The Clock was the place to go back then. In a drunken, drug addled stupor we'd stumble in. This had to be very early seventies. He would have their version of chili. I still remember it drizzling down his chin. I had a thing for the sixty year old waitress. Well, I always had a thing for waitresses. I was maybe early twenties. Beer goggles. Thankfully she utterly ignored my inebriated romantic advances.

My latest visit recently revealed no improvement whatsoever. Today the food is still overly greasy and served New Jersey style-they throw it in front of you. The coffee must be imported from a Russian gulag. Maybe it's mule piss.

We often remarked seeing the big braying donkey statue on the roof, "You gotta be an ass to eat here."

Bray's comes through for the slider cravings that come up and just can't be satisfied by a White Castle.  I like the real grilled onions and even the "original" double cheese burger with 1000 Island Dressing on occasion. I kind of like the crinkle cut fires and have some with a sack of Bray's burgers. Once upon a time there was a lot more of these restaurants and it goes back at least into the fifties. Some of the old nostalgia is still there in this last version and its good to go back ever so often.  They have even succumbed to the drive through instead of the car hops. Brays is open until midnight most nights and 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.  Breakfast is served at 7 AM for the early birds. Come and get 'em.  I'm going with 3 stars.

My brother introduced me to Bray's on a dark cool night after returning from our vacation in Fl. Boy did I have no idea what was about to happen. I hale from Troy, and I've tasted telway so when I hear slider that's what I think of. I can say I was happily surprised by what came out. It was almost a mini hamburger, and it was called 'the original belly buster.'

This shiny simple bun greets you on the plate. It hides inside of it a two juicy patties, a heap of sauteed onions, cheese, and thousand island. This is the best mini hamburger / slider I've had in my travels.

A lot of times I find 'special' sauces such as thousand island or otherwise to be 'masks' for lack of a better term. They kind of cover up imperfections, and add moisture to an otherwise dry burger. This isn't true of the Bray's original belly buster. It's juicy as all heck already, and it captures the zing of that sauce as a component.

I've ventured from Troy to Westland to visit Brays three additional times now. Even with gas prices as they are, I never regret the commute.

ps. If you 'like' sauteed onions on a slider, you'r going to 'love' them after you eat at Bray's.

There are two things on my list of foods that never sound bad.  Burgers and Thai food!  Therefore, I am always on a quest for a great burger, be it a juicy bar style burger or delicious (Detroit) slider.

We live in the area and have driven past Brays tons of times before finally stopping in for the first time three days ago.

Upon walking in we were greeted by our friendly waitress and the smell of caramelized onions and beef.

The place itself reminds one of a cute, extremely clean diner type restaurant.  They have a semi-open kitchen and approx 10 booths and a counter to sit.

I ordered the 2 burger combo, which are served with caramelized onions on a buttery bun and pickles on the side.  I love mayo so I asked for a side and added both ketchup and mustard as well.  The burgers are thin and juicy, and very very flavorful.  The size of these "sliders" are slightly larger than usual- but this is not a bad thing at all!

Fries are just ok- the crinkle cut, frozen variety and Pepsi products are served (with Dr Pepper as an option..(?) )

They have a drive thru which is a plus and also serve breakfast!

So I'll admit, the next day we went for breakfast and this also did not disappoint. It was a little later in the morning so I ordered a slider (oh no she didn't!) and 2 eggs over medium w hashbrowns.  Hubby had a huge breakfast including some (he said) very good biscuits and gravy.

Breakfast for three ran us only $13.00 and was of similar quality of the basic breakfast items found at any Leo's/coney place.

3 Star burgers at Brays. Maybe a little above average actually as they caramelise their onions perfectly and it is a good slider, but here again, their beef patty is slightly skimpy.... damn tasty though.

Looking at Bray's, it seems more like a "Coney establishment" than a white cube at the corner of a intersection specializing in Detroit sliders. Brays was like this when Gordon Bray expanded out though. I can remember as a kid seeing their signs with the horse standing on two legs and thinking there must be horse meat in their sliders ! Of course, there is no horse meat, but they are tasty.

Brays is also a good breakfast place. Good service too.

Bray's has the wonderful benefit of being on my drive to Emagine, a theater I've been hitting a lot lately for late night movies. Every single time I drive by and think, "man, I could go for a slider!" But there's never enough time to eat before a flick.

But last week I had 25 minutes to kills so I finally made it over there for a couple of slider and fries. YES.

MMM. Crinkle fries and burgers. Comin' at you all greasy with those cooked onions on a white bun with a side of pickles. A great, unhealthy, but quick dinner! The fries come out mega hot, perhaps a little under salted, but that's easily remedied by a shake over them with the salt shaker. I ordered a diet coke and the gal hooked me up by adding a little cherry flavor in there. Kind of makes it not exactly diet anymore, but darn tasty. Win! When I had to run out the door to the movie she dumped it into a cup for me to go. Double win!

The folks behind the counter are very nice and VERY, uhm...interactive. If you're looking for a quiet meal this may not be the place for you. Lots of sparring and bantering with the cooks and waitresses will happen. They'll make fun of each other and try and get you in on the act. They'll shout to other regulars and bring you into their jokes. I'm an outgoing gal so it's fun for me but it can be overwhelming to wallflowers, so beware! I pulled up a seat at the counter so I knew what I was in for.

Cheap eats, a lively staff, and in and out in 25 minutes...perfect for a quick bite before catching a flick!

Bray's sliders....is there anything else as hot and greasy good?  No, I don't think so.  I grew up in Westland and have been coming here all of my life - back when the donkey was on the outside and there was that little carry out area.

What I really love is the original belly buster.  It's a double patty with cheese, some kind of thousand island sauce, pickles and oh yes, grilled onions.  Sometimes the cook gets carried away with the amount of sauce so I always ask them to go just a little light, but that's just me.  The fries are crinkle cut, unfortunately frozen from a bag.  If you ask them to make them crispy they will, that helps.  I mostly hit the drive-thru, and they are pretty quick considering the freshness of all of the food.

After sampling nearly all the sliders Detroit has to offer, I rank Bray's the highest for it's pickles and convenience. Otherwise, all sliders are starting to taste the same to me.

Bray's is FTW for the following reasons:

    1. They have a drive-thru
    2. Their drive-thru is pretty damn fast.
    3. They take credit cards without a minimum purchase (yeah, I know I'm bad and irresponsible, but I'm also lazy!)
    4. They have the tastiest pickles
    5. They have brewed iced tea
    6. Their french fries are the crinkle kind
    7. Easy, fast and tasty -- what more could you want?

I am not a big fan of Brays. Maybe it is just my luck here or maybe it is that my sister always teased that they served donkey burgers, who knows?

The flavor is just off a bit in my opinion. Maybe I am just spoiled by the embarassment of riches slider wise in the area but these don't do anything for me.

I just don't get all the love. Maybe it's just me?

The home of the original slider. I miss the donkey on top of the buildings but at least they have him inside to see. The menu is simple and everything is good and the service is fast even through the drive thru.

Best of all is the Chocolate shakes. But it closes early and they would make a great late night snack.

We used to go to Bray's on Saturday mornings with my dad.  It was a tiny hole-in-the-wall place.  It was usually so busy my dad would pop behind the counter for a rag to wipe a place for us at the counter.  When we were done eating, he would bus our dishes and wipe up so the people waiting at the door could sit down.

Ok, on with a current review.  I love Bray's.  I tried to think of how I would review it if I had driven from Oakland County.  I can't.  I'm too biased.
So, here's the review strictly as if you lived in the area and couldn't wait another second for a slider:
They are great.  Food is diner-type, and doesn't disappoint.  I've had their hot dogs, chili, fries, and burgers.  All are the same every single time you go.  I always get my burgers with only pickle and then add chili and ketchup at the table (or in the car in the parking lot, I'm not going to lie).  The drive thru has changed, they will give you whatever you want now.
If you go when it's busy, you are going to have to either wait for a booth or split up and take whatever seats at the counter are available.  I love that they still serve pop in plastic cups.
To sum it up...if you are looking for sliders, these will hit the spot.

I have been eating Bray's since I was a kid...when my parents would come home from the bar with a bag full of sliders for us to eat~ and to prevent their hangovers.
I miss the donkey on top of the building, but he is still there right when you walk in the door.
Two hungry people can eat here for under $10 and they are open all night so you can stop after the bar for some chili cheese fries and a couple of burgers.

Brays burgers = amazingly, awesome sliders.  Their chili cheese fries are about as good as it gets.  I can't figure out which I like more, theirs or Layfette coneys?  Food takes time here in comparison, that's for sure.  It's not super fast but it's super good.  I like the fact they have a drive in.  My grandma won't eat here again because she's convinced the food got her sick.  Never had a bad experience myself. Love the donkey statue with the burger plate when you walk in!

This is a great burger joint.

If you like the slider type of hamburger, this is the place.  The regular hamburgers or cheeseburgers are more the size of McDonalds hamburger than a White Castle.  If I'm pretty hungry, I could easily put down 4-5 of these.  They sell 10 for around $10-$11, so they aren't expensive.  They are very simple - bun, burger, grilled onions, pickles and mustard - and they are delicious.  They also make larger, double burgers with lettuce, tomato, etc. and coneys.  But I think I'll just stick with the regular cheeseburgers.  They grill the burgers on a giant flat-top, along with the grilled onions.  Then they wrap them in parchment paper, which keeps them warm and steamy until you get home.  They also have pretty good krinkle cut fries as well.  I'd recommend the drive through, simply becuase you can smoke inside and it was fairly smokey when I was there.  If you don't mind the smoke, there's plenty of room to chow down inside and it's a well kept, clean restaurant.  I highly recommend this place over any of the chains and will be back again for sure.

This is my pick in the cheap burger category.  I moved to Canton from NE Ohio and the one thing I missed the most was a place called the Hamburger Station where they had the best sliders and fresh-cut fries and onion rings I ever ate. I was ecstatic when I found Bray's on Ford Rd. in Westland ( not to be confused with Brayz at 9 Mile and Dequindre). The burgers are slightly bigger but they are o-so-good.  I like them with everything but ketchup (mustard, grilled onions, pickles) .  Sadly, the fries are frozen and actually suck, but they have fantastic homeade potato chips, really thick and crispy. I really like them because they're not salty, which is great because you can always add salt but you can't take it off!  Bray's isn't quite as good as the old place in Ohio, but it's a lot shorter of a drive!

I miss Bray's so much since leaving Michigan.  I try to stop in whenever I'm back in town.  They're one of the quintessential slider joints that seem to be synonymous with the Midwest.

The burgers are by no means gourmet, but they are fantastic.  Greasy and wrapped in a semi-clear paper that becomes almost clear as the grease is absorbed.  They're even great when you nuke the leftovers the morning after.

I grew up in the neighborhood that borders Brays so their sliders have been a staple in my diet since my youth.  I never, ever go to White Castle because when I want a slider why would I settle for anything but the best.  I am proud to say that I'm a Brays VIP.  Here's how I've attained such status.  I typically go through their drive-thru on Saturday nights after I've tipped a few at a local watering hole.  After seeing me every weekend my girl at the drive-thru window has memorized my order which consists of a #2 Bellybuster (with both raw & fried onions), hamburger and a french fry(well done,, I like 'em crispy).  Now when I pull up all I have to say is "It's Rick" and she replies "Pull around Hon".  I must say I'm now spoiled.  Plus the fact that she has the cook make all my food fresh is another special perk.  I must say though I do miss the old white building of yester year and the days of their "Open 24hrs" service but I can live with it.  So go get yourself a Bellybuster or a bag of ten and you'll see for yourself what a special place this is.
