Bechtelsville, PA
The Brass Rail is an old feeling restaurant. I had a cheese steak, which was quite delicious, but was a lot smaller than a Philly Cheese steak. However, the price was a lot less than a Philly place.
That being said, I had a die hard Philly Cheese Steak lover with me, and he was thrilled that we were able to get two cheese steaks, a personal cheese pizza, and 4 beers for around twenty bucks.
If you go into this place looking for a delicious cheese steak you should be happy. -

Yum Yum Yum, you're not an Allentownian until you've found love for the rail. Obviously growing up I was here a lot with my Grandad, and then for all family occasions that involved an after stop for food- it was the brass rail.
Some of the best cheesesteaks in the area, year after year after year voted the best in the valley. Now- here's the thing, and I try to explain this to people there are all different kinds of cheesesteaks. These are very different than your pizza place cheesesteak or your pats and genos but one things for sure they are GOOD. Also in love with the single order perogies so you can order as many- or as little as you'd like.
That's pretty much all I eat there, but I've tried bites of everyone's food and last time my mother ordered some crazy seafood dinner medley and it was DELICIOUS! It's got a real at home cozy feel and it's been that way forever, don't expect some fancy restaurant this is old school.
Also- little note they will ship cheesesteaks to anywhere in the country so if you really are in a cheesesteak bind (and I've been there many times) you can call them up and have a Brass Rail cheesesteak on your door in no time, and they have a map in the doorway/hall of all the places their cheesesteaks have ventured! -

If you are looking for an authentic Philadelphia cheese steak with all the fixings for a good price this is the place. If you live a couple hours away, they will pack them up with the ingredients all packaged separately for travel. The lasagna is good, there is a full bar. The wait staff is fair. The restaurant is run down over the years, but all the old locals still love it. It gets 5 stars just for the steak sandwiches. Go to Yoco's if you want a hotdog or pierogi.

This place is outdated, everything is old in the entire place, and I mean everything. If this places wants a new generation of customers it is going need to get Gordan Ramsey to Allentown Pa because this is a kitchen nightmare. The veggies taste canned and the mash potatoes taste instant. It was some of the blandest food I have every tasted. It is cheap which is the only reason I gave it a second star. I would only recommend coming here for a few cheap beers , maybe a cheesesteak.
If you are in the Lehigh Valley and want a real cheesesteak go to Michael's in south Bethlehem. There rolls and the trimmed rib-eye they use is awesome. -

The best hot dogs and cheese steaks in Allentown. Both come on fantastic Malone's rolls. The cheese steaks are half the price of their counterparts in Philly and taste much better and the Hot dogs have their own special sauce! If you don't mind a spike in your cholesterol and wast line visit the Rail.

West Hollywood, CA
There was a time in Allentown's history when all restaurants had uninspired menus like The Brass Rail. Fortunately some things change and some things don't.
As a child in the 1960's and 70's going out to dinner to TBR was something to look forward to. I realize now giving 3-stars is very generous, but when I come back East to visit, I like to stop in for a cheesesteak or pizza or perogies or all three to relive my childhood. Anything else on the menu should be avoided. Also a favorite was the Garbage Pie which is a pizza with EVERYTHING on it.
PS- nothing inside has changed in over 40 years so if you're new to the area don't expect much. -

Scuzzy inside, it's in need of a serious face-lift. However, they do make a mean steak sandwich. Get it to go.
Update: I have had MUCH better cheesesteaks elsewhere - namely Matey's (a local chain) and Carl's Corner in Bethlehem. Skip this and go to Mateys! -

The Brass Rail has been around since 1931 when it was just a burger & dog stand. TBR moved to the Hamilton Blvd location in 1933, then a 2nd location was opened on Lehigh St in 1961. Since then the 1st location on Hamilton Blvd closed, but the Lehigh St location is still running strong.
Maybe it's more the nostalgia, & maybe because I didn't grow up in the Lehigh Valley, but I really don't understand the draw of this place. I can get less expensive & better food & beer at some of the local bars. Still, their food IS decent, but nothing to rave about. It is a good place to take the kids & get a cold beer w/o too much of a hassle. I just think that TBR is overrated. Plus this place is usually packed, so they must be doing something right to keep them coming back for more! -

Been a couple of times, the burgers are uninspired but taste ok, and don't beleive the hype the cheesesteaks are very mediocre! And tiny!

I have gone to TBR many times but only for Breakfast so I can only speak for that experience. Every time I have always received prompt friendly service. Hearty amount of food and yes the decor is old but it is part of the Nostalgia. I prefer a place to keep to it's roots, that is why TBR continues to bring people back in it is a consistent experience each and ever time.

Fresh Meadows, NY
Had a cheesesteak here once. The menu said they mailed their cheesesteaks all over the world. I wonder who would actually mail order one because it was overwhelmingly average - not terrible, but not great by any means.

This was the worst meal I've had in a long time. Fake mashed potatoes, (how hard is it to boil some potatoes?), and a gray looking slice of processed piece of something that was trying to pass for meatloaf, really quite sad.

When it comes to steak sandwiches, this place has been making the best in the Valley for years.

This place has forever been overrated. It's really not that good.
