Great little store.
Local, has quality products, and fair prices.
I do wish they'd be open more hours, but otherwise, great place. Not to mention they have a rewards program for shopping there, which is terrific.
5 stars in my book. -

I want to start this review by saying that this negative review is based off of an experience with the older woman, with the strange/unique glasses, that always comes across as if she's not all that awake. We brought our dog in this morning for an 8am grooming appt. We like the early appts. so he's the first dog out. When we dropped him off this morning, the strange glasses woman was there along with his groomer, Fractal (Fractal is awesome-she deserves 5 stars for her grooming). Fractal reassured us that our dog would be done within a couple of hours. We left, and didn't think anything more about it.
3 hours later, we still hadn't received a call saying our dog was ready, which is very unusual. We started to worry, and we called, but we were on hold for 8 minutes. We hung up, drove down, and we asked this young guy to check on our dog. He comes back with our dog. I asked if our dog had been waiting long, and he said that he had-he'd actually been done for about 2 hours. WHAT? We never received a call, and they have the correct number written down-it's on the grooming card!
I asked why we hadn't been called, and he turned around and asked the older woman with the strange glasses. She said she THOUGHT she had called. Then she said that she had definitely called, but that the number just rang, and rang, and rang. I told her the phone never rang, and asked why she didn't try again. She answered, "I probably mis-dialed. Sorry."
This woman thinks she called us. Then, she thinks it just rang. Then, she probably mis-dialed. This is how you do business? This is unacceptable, and it's extremely poor customer service. What if we hadn't come down there-was she just going to leave our dog there all day?
If it wasn't for the rest of the staff (the guy with the long hair-recently cut, young girl with injured foot & glasses, Fractal) we would never go back. -

Since being a new dog owner, I have been a staple at Bow Wow Meow. The store has a very good vibe, super friendly staff and a great selection of products to choose from!
My little guy, Chewy, might just turn into a shopaholic because we have literally walked in this store three times this week alone! I love the fact that they are open later than other store hours, making it convenient to drop in when we're walking our dog after work.
My boyfriend is very picky with what we feed our dog too and he's been equally pleased that all the healthy top dog food brands are available at Bow Wow Meow! They were even so nice as to give us samples before purchasing, to see if Chewy (our Yorkie) likes the food.
As he peruses the necessities, I of course look through more fluffy stuff such as clothes, toys and carriers. Bow Wow has a more tasteful selection than other pet stores and their employees are always eager to give more information. They are also super patient and willing to answer any questions we have. I only docked one star because some of the toys are a bit on the expensive side.
However, we really enjoy coming in to this store and we'll definitely be back here. Perhaps tonight again?! :) -

Bow Wow Meow is the cat's meow... err, dog's bark as far as pet stores go. They have a nice variety of treats, plus a great selection of dog food. Our Yorkie loves "Taste of the Wild." The price is no different than other dog food, but has less filler.
I'm happy that we have this neighborhood pet store and so's Bernie (my Yorkie). -

So a few weeks ago on the recommendation of a friend (and all of Yelp), I took my new pup in for some grooming. I opted for the whole bath package (listed on their website as: bath, brush, haircut, blow dry, nail trim, anal glands expressed and ear cleaning - sans haircut as she's short haired) and boy would I like my money back!
My dog came back with incredibly flaky skin, smelling like she had been doused in perfume instead of actually washed, and dirty feeling fur that was incredibly rough to the touch. If that wasn't enough, one of the groomers called after me as an afterthought "By the way, if her nails are too sharp you can lightly take a nail file to them" as I exited the store. When I picked her up to go into the house her nail slashed me so hard I bled and I ended up having to file them all down - something I think they should have done there and something they should have looked out for on a pup so young.
And that is just the stuff I noticed within the first 24 hours.
They definitely did not clean out her ears. And less than 3 weeks later I'm finding out she more than likely needs her anal glands expressed.
To top it all off, a woman from the store called me a few days after my initial visit to ask how things went and when I expressed my frustration her response was, "Oh well...maybe we can use different shampoo next time...or ....uh.....something".
I rewashed the dog about a week later and she came out clean as a whistle with no flaking and incredibly soft fur.
BWM does deserve a few stars for their incredible selection but the grooming is so bad I can't imagine I'll be back. -

I recently got two kittens and went to Bow Wow Meow for food and some supplies. Its really close to my house and I want a place I can run to if we need something quick.
The guy that was working there when we came in was so helpful. He not only walked us through the different wet and dry foods, he also talked about his cat and was really informative. He also helped by writing down different vets that he would suggest and we went to one of them (Arguello Pet Hospital) and loved it!
The prices are a little steeper than a Petco, but you are getting really quality products and a lot of the food is natural and quality brands. I can't afford to go here for everything, but we will be long time customers since our cats love their Tiki brand wet food! -

Great Store. Very knowledgable staff. They were kind, personable and helped me with training tips and advice to help my pooch adjust to living in a city. They carry all of the best foods/ treats/ shampoos/ remedies/ etc. for dogs. I am happy this place is in walking distance to my apartment! It is a great place!

Go to the pet stores in the Marina. Not as pricey. I love their inventory but the prices are redic.
They do have the best pet beds but head down to Chengoo where most everything is made by Chengoo, the prices aren't totally redic and the owner is super sweet and patient -

Great check in offer, got 10% off of dog toys and treats. I frequent this place because I love their icing decorated dog treats. I always come here before my dogs birthday to get him something special. Great customer service and the owner's dog, Vinny, is the cutest!!!

I love Bow Wow Meow. I take my 4 pound Pomeranian there to get groomed and they really take their time and are very gentle with him. When I called to make another appointment, they looked up my information and knew that my dog needed special attention. When my dog comes home, he is very happy and not nervous or scared. He smells good and looks great. Sure, it's VERY expensive. But worth it!
I trust Bow Wow Meow with my baby!!! -

My doggies R' Us. ( they have everything here - dog training, teeth cleaning and everything else dogs )
They have a great selection of Dog food. Dry, canned, frozen meat, frozen chew bones. And the staff there are all so knowledgeable and friendly.
I took my puppy Patches to their puppy training school there on Sunday, taught by Mike. Enjoyed the class.
They do a great job with grooming as well - decent price.
Both my doggies had their teeth cleaned there too - $100+, and way better price than the other option of $400.
Thanks Bow WOW. -

Definitely dog-oriented, as most pet stores are--but then most cats probably wouldn't allow themselves to be dressed in a sweater, be taken out on a leash or in a carrier, would they? ;) I can't hold that against BWM for not having all the things for cats that they have for dogs.
They have some great cat toys, the treats my cat likes, a really a good price on the food I feed her. It's generally a good little neighborhood shop.
They're not particularly warm, but eh...I don't really care. I don't go there to make friends, I go there to get supplies for my cat--who by the way, deserves the best! -

We have two long hair 10 month old cats. My boyfriend and I felt regret as soon as we handed them over to the flustered looking groomer. The cat in their bags were rapidly placed in a dark room (with a toilet sign on the outside). There was no interest in taking a look at them with us to consult over the cats requirements.
The cats are kept in the room till it's their turn and what makes it more traumatic for the cat is that they are groomed in the same room as the dogs. Crazy. I know land rent is expensive, but I think we were expecting the cats to be groomed away from the barking dogs. Our cats are indoor cats and have had no experience of dogs previously.
We dropped the cats off at 9 and were ready for pick up at 2.30pm. Poor things.
On the plus side the cats were clean and well groomed (all their matted hair was shaved or trimmed). So I'll give 2 stars for that.
I would never want them to endure 5 hours of stress like that again. We have travelled with our cats by plane over 20 hours and they were more stressed at Bow Wow Wow than in the air! We won't be going back.Comment from Amy B. of Bow Wow Meow 4/6/2011

The first time I came to this store was when I was just 6 months old. My mommy took me here for puppy classes. She got coupons from the instructor for the store and so being the thrifty women that she is, she prompyly used the coupon for my first ever grooming session.
She must have liked it because ever since then, I have to come back once a month to get my bath, nails clipped, ears cleaned, teeth brushed, and haircuts. I have had a lion cut, a puppy cut, and just a trim. My mom paid them $45 - $60 depending on whether I got a haircut or not.
The people who worked here are really nice. They know me very well by now and they regularly threatened mommy that they are going to kidnap me one day. I was worried, but my mommy always says they can't and that I am hers forever and ever.... I love you too, mommy.Comment from Amy B. of Bow Wow Meow 1/21/2011

My Yorkie and I come to Bow Wow Meow everytime we're on Polk Street and come out with a bully, treats, a flea collar, or something. The people that work here are friendly and it's nice to see all the dogs in the neighborhood hanging out inside (my favorite is the sweetheart 3-legged terrier). Bow Wow also carries Call of the Wild dog food, which is what we feed our lil guy since it's all protein and a great quality brand. It's like $4 more here than other places I've seen it, but then again, it is San Francisco, and everything's a little more expensive.

A few months ago I visited the Russian Hill area to work with two lovely German Shepherd Dogs who were staying with me for in-board training to work on leash pulling and on-leash dog aggression issues. Since Santos and Angel live and walk in this neighborhood, I wanted to work with them there before they went back home. We stumbled upon Bow Wow Meow and wandered in. What a great selection of toys, treats and collars. The shop dogs were well behaved and provided a perfect distraction for training. Lots of neighborhood dogs stopped by to grab goodies and say hello. The staff was helpful, loved watching me work with the dogs and even extended a 10% professional discount on my purchases. They have training equipment from headcollars and bait bags to Herm Sprenger pinch collars. Many unique items and a treat bar that even looks tempting to humans.

Kitchy city! I knew I had to come into this store upon encountering a large black lab trying to pull his mummy into the store...alas, he did not get his way but it was a cute site to see. Greeted by two open doors held open by dog stone statues with waiter costumes, I quickly gravitated towards the host of neat people socks of different dog breeds. Being the dog-crazed dog owner I am, I cleaned them out if their shiba inu sock inventory for the day. This store has lots to offer, including a massive wall to wall selection of collars and leashes. Good price range of items, will come back soon!

Alright all you pet lover yelpers we tried this place out this weekend and I believe I will be adding it to my pet approved list!!!
Now this is a store that you could spend all day in!
The best part about the store is the great assortment of pet treats they carry. They are just the cutest treats that I have ever seen! I love the creativity and thought that goes into each one. Incredibly healthy and fun! My dogs love them and I picked up some for my neighbors also since they were so cute!
They have a great grooming services and a very unique way of going about cutting the dogs nails. I'm not sure if they do it on all of them but trying to get my dogs nails done is a nightmare within itself. So they had a extra employee stand in front holding a dog treat. Very sneaky and it got the job done!
I'm a strong believer that whatever vitamins you are taking should also be given to your pet. After all if Glucosamine can help your own joints don't you think it should also be given to your best friend as well? I was very happy to see that they carried this.
I can never get my hands on enough books so I spent a great deal of time looking to see if they had any new books I could add to my collection.
They had a great selection of dog beds so I picked up a nice green one which my dog slept in on the car ride home!! I loved the animal food bowls and picked up a few for my sisters dog. They have a great assortment of clothing but not so much for the larger dog.
If you are afraid of the pet smell making your house smell like a barn then I suggest trying out some of the products they carry. All have a great smell to them and hold the smell longer than some of the grocery store products.
They offer dog teeth cleaning so made an appointment to bring my dog back next week.
I don't have a cat so can't really give you much of a review for the cat owners reading this. I did however see quite a bit of cat products so they do cater to cats as well.
I had a great time at this store and met a lot of friendly people. I highly recommend you checking out this store! -

Electric mat cat resting place.
"So, since I got the mat, my cat is resting all day", according to my GF's neighbor.
???
Is that indoor cat suppose to be doing?
I don't even have an electric blanket.
Well, if I do, I might be sleeping all day long.
I don't have any cat & dog but I like cat & dog.
I come here almost every other weekend just follow my GF because she has a cat.
It seems like she is getting good service here.
I have seen that she got some discount because she has been there many times and they keep track on the customer's record really well.
I like that local small business does great customer service.
I don't mind buying a GW Bush figure-dog chewing thing.
And yes, I will chew on the thing at least once, very hard.
Hey, they have small bag of Katsuo-bushi, Bonito flakes for cat and very pricy!
Not for human?
You know, I eat the thing, with nice cold Tofu, thin chopped green onion and soy sauce over, also, put over Okonomi-yaki is good too!
Basically bonito broth is for Udon and Soba noodle soup base.
But, why that's cost so much than the any Japanese market?
I just wonder why. This is true story, Bonito flakes for Japanese is a lot cheaper than for cat!
But, the electric mat cat resting place, isn't it went too far.
I want the mat.
For my resting place.
In my office!
Btw,the electric mat cat resting place is nothing to do with this place. -

I'm not crazy, I swear. I just like to put sweaters on my dog and spend more money on them than I do on me in a year. I haven't bought myself almost anything this year, but Fillit Mignon has gotten three new beds, nine new clothing articles, countless treat bags, and Pomplemousse has gotten even more.
It's a little silly, but Bow Wow Meow helps me out by making me feel normal about spending hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on, well, my dogs. Maybe it's because in the inside I want to the be the evil antithesis of Paris Hilton. Instead of poofy white needless outfits, I dress dark, meandering through the streets with my two tiny little cohorts. Not really, but it always sounded like fun to me.
It takes a lot for me to really like a pet store. I like the natural food, and the organic treats. But I'm also looking for the blend of fashion and function in dog clothes. I'm not going to put some silly poofy dress of my dog just because it's small and I can get away with it. I want warm, cozy, washable items that are cute too. That's not always that easy to come by.
Bow Wow Meow has helpful staff, a wonderful accessories selection, and leash and harnesses galore, all the way from my 2 pound and 6 pound chihuahua, to when I had my 100 pound german sherpard girl. It was perfect, as it's my one stop shop for pups, kitties too. But my little MiuMiu kitty doesn't really like outfits, so we usually just stick with catnip. I almost bought my cat a little harness to see if she wanted to walk outside with me one day, but that's when I realized I was borderline nutzo and decided to stop, before it got too bad.
One time, when I was looking for something really specific one of the owners even let me into their back stock room to check everything so that I was completely happy with my purchase. Now that's customer service.
And sometimes we make friends there, and Fillit finds someone new to play with. Pomplemousse prefers to hand out in the corner with me though, all snuggled up in whatever new cozy sweater we bought to cover his tiny little butt.
With late store hours usually, I can even get there after work, but parkings a bitch in that neighborhood, so beware. We usually go late, shop, and stay for dinner, as there's some killer Italian and dessert places in the hood.
So you'll probably see the four of us, me, Cody, and two tiny little well dressed chiahuhuas parading down the street, looking fly, and still keeping to the practical nature of the dog fashion world.Listed in: Random Shopping…, It's A Dog's World Out There

I have a nephew*. My nephew, Nelson, happens to be a dog... he is a Yorkshire Terrier... he fits in the palm of my hand.
Nelson is a weird, funny little dog:
He has an ongoing intimate relationship with a Blue Elephant; he once yapped all night and kept me awake, only to fall dead asleep as soon as I decided to just get up and go about my day; often he sits on my knee and watches TV; sometimes he'll fall asleep with his head on the ground and his butt in the air... When my brother & sister-in-law got married we bought him a little tuxedo to wear to the ceremony... it was precious. My brother (the big manly-man) dresses Nelly up in THE Ohio State gear for game days and my sister-in-law often carries him around in a purse.
Nelson is HY-sterical.
I should say that there is a tradition of buying the pets in our family presents for major holidays.
I should also say that usually those presents consist of Snausages (tm) or rawhides or new Blue Elephants to replace the gooed up old ones that have to be trashed.
Last year - close to Christmas - I happened to be walking by Bow Wow Meow & for some reason I went in... and, there in a column of light was the only present I could possibly imagine giving to my nephew dog.
A little doggie t-shirt which said: Bitches HEART Me.
*grin*
It was worth the $25 I paid for that shirt to watch my big, manly-man brother snort his coffee out of his nose on Christmas morning upon opening Nelly's present.
It was worth an additional $25 to watch the way that Nelly strutted around the room when wearing that doggie t-shirt. He's such a playah!
;)
I don't have a dog or cat - so I don't know about Bow Wow Meow as a reliable pet store for regular needs - but, dang was that doggie t-shirt the best find EVER.
*NOTE: I neglected to say that I have TWO nephews, both dogs - the second being Jinx, aka "Big Head Jinx" - my other brother's pit bull... he's 80 lbs and thinks he's a lap dog... his farts are so stinky they can (and, have) peel paint off walls... but, I will save a story of Jinx for another review.
Just didn't want Jinxy-schminksy to feel like his Auntie Katie doesn't love him... -

Despite living next to a chain pet supply store, I prefer making the trek across town for the quality goods at Bow Wow Meow. Customer service is first rate, product is always in stock, and they always have an extra treat for my trusty steed. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is prices are a little steep for a simple guy like myself.

Holy prices, Batman. D and I were in the hood and looking for some accoutrements for our new pup, including but not limited to a nice leash and collar. I saw an argyle collar that I had also seen online that I really liked, however, the price at Bow Wow Meow was about 1.5 times as expensive (D, who had previously proclaimed me a crazy person for looking for pet supplies online, said "uh...maybe you should buy the one online.")
Wanting a leather leash, I fingered a lovely rolled black one. Thinking I would splurge up to $40 over D's ineveitable protests, I dropped it rapidly once I saw the $110+ price tag. Now, I've ridden horses most of my life, and I think you would be hard-pressed to find more expensive pet supplies than the ones that cater to them. At the same time, it's a strip of leather...sure, a nice one, but unless I was missing the fact that the snap was gold-plated, three figures is a bit much. I didn't dare ask the employees ignoring us about the argyle dog pillow that I was also coveting.
Cute stuff, but there's no reason for me to buy something here that a) I can find online for significantly less, b) that my dog/cats will ineveitably chew/lose/destroy/stink up.Listed in: Meh., Cats and Dogs, Living…

All I ask is that if $160 is gonna get dropped on two haircuts that a halfway decent fade be included in that whole exchange. Instead, we got 2 extremely pissed off cats back that were shaved different lengths in different spots. Bonnie was not happy in the least! Now granted, Bonnie's kind of a prima donna, but she's never hissed at Clyde before and he didn't take it well.
I don't know what happened over the 5 hours that Bonnie and Clyde were in the possession of Bow Wow Meow, but they were both acting funky the rest of the night and I think it was more than their displeasure with the sporadic bald spots that marked their little bodies..
That's all I'm saying. The 1 star says the rest.. -

This is where my puppy got his first grooming, which they did a pretty good job. I brought him back two times after this and the end product was horrible. They missed a ton of spots and the lady at the counter actually got the clippers and did the touch ups rather than the actual groomer. I should have learned my lesson then, but I brought him back for a third time and the end result was that they barely even groomed him, at most they gave him a bath and clipped his nails.
My dog also freaks out when we pass this place. I'm not sure what they did while he was there being groomed, but he remembers every time we pass this place. -

I think I just found the cheapest deal on my normally super-expensive-but-I-love-my-cat cat food. I have been all over town to date, as my cat is on a new food (Evo) and Bow Wow has it for by far, the lowest deal in town. $1.09 per can vs. $1.25, $1.39 and $1.65 at the other stores I've been going in to.
Do the math, it's dollars of savings per month. YIPPEE!
They also have a membership card where you get savings after a certain amount of purchases. SHWING!
*There's tons of other cute things in there but I don't play dress-up with my cat nor do I ever plan to subject my future dog to any of that cutesie stuff. -

***Update***
I am a Yelper and I have sinned. I made assumptions in my earlier review based on store layout and presentation without looking closely at prices and inventory. I judged this book by its cover and this updated review should make amends.
Today Amy took me all around Bow Wow Meow, which is her family's store, and showed me their inventory and prices. Some things are cheaper than nearby competitors; other items are a few bucks more expensive, but mostly prices are on par.
The store is spacious and a pleasant place to stroll through. They have an array of supplies, furniture, beds, toys, litter, food and the like. They happily take special orders, they have a good selection of kitty collars (sometimes hard to find for the little ones), and their hilarious library of whimsical cat and dog books should not be missed.
I was really impressed with how dedicated Amy was to my customer experience. Also, today they called me to tell me that they found out one of their distributors sells the kitty litter I have been searching the city for. They'll do a special order for me; all I have to do is call on a Tuesday for a Wednesday delivery. Bow Wow Meow definitely has me as a loyal customer.

I chose a puppy food for the baby and found that dang, he eats a lot! Well, the bag disappeared so fast, I went to order a giant one online - so I could save money and not worry about lugging the heavy thing home.
Well after 3 failed delivery attempts, and puppy food running supa low, I called Bow Wow and they held the last bag for me. Guess what? It cost the same! This little trendy pet boutique has the same price on fancy dog food as the discount online order!
Bow Wow +1. Amazon - 1.
They also give treats to the pup when I take him with me. So he's a big fan! -

Afraid of the dog food recall? Come here and buy Evenger's, not to be confused with the Masked Avenger. It's MEAT. Nothing but meat. No bizarre Chinese chemicals. My dogs go nuts for it.
I was looking painstakingly at all the dog food, trying to find ONE that says "not tested on animals," but none of them did (it's very hard to find). When I asked about it, the clerk said she'd ask her boss about it. That was nice. If they actually start stocking non animal tested dog food, I'll shop here pretty much exclusively.
Because for crying out loud, with as much as I love my dogs, I don't want to feed them food that's been tested on poor little animals shoved in cages.
I'm a loyal Jefferey's girl, since they're in my neighborhood, but for my dogs' craving for giant chunks of chicken thighs, I come here. -

Great selection, decent prices, good people.
As a pet supply store, this is definitely one of my top destinations in the city (perhaps after B&B Pet Supplies on Geary). It leans towards the higher-end, but their stuff is great. They have stylish pet beds and clothes, cute toys, and most all of the practical stuff you could want. Mostly I come for the treats-by-the-pound that I shovel into bag after bag for my very spoiled pups.
However, if you absolutely, positively, MUST have a soft chew toy shaped like menorah, a moyle's scissors, or a dradel, THIS is your store.
On the other side of their business, they do grooming. Here I would give them 5 stars. My boy Dylan comes back as clean and fluffy as Mr. Whipple's Charmin. They do a great job and the pups are as happy as can be.
