I dont care what diet you are on. You can cheat with Bovella's. Go ahead, I wont tell anyone.
On a rainy evening, after having a nice dinner with my husband, my pregnant tummy screamed "let me eat cake!". We had passed this quaint little bakery many times before and never really thought much about her. (I took it upon myself to deem Bovella's a she). But that dreary night, she shone bright and attracted us.
At first we werent sure if Bovella's was open, and did the awkward pacing across the street, waiting for a sign of life. Yes they were open, and this was quite clear when a huge flock of people filled the bakery. We followed suit.
After trying to fight the crowd to place our order, we finally sat down with some coffees and some little scrumptious yummies. One bite of the RED VELVET SQUARE and my heart melted. Then a bite of the TIRAMISU SQUARE, and I was in love. They were so moist and delicious, the words elude me. They have amazing little desserts that are about 2-4 bites each, making them the perfect size to grab a few and sample what this place has to offer. Another of of my favorites is the Irish Cream Cup, which is irish cream mousse in a chocolate teacup
Fast forward to months later, months of talking to everyone about this little gem, and I am in surprise labor with my son. Ask any of the nurses on call that day and night, and they will tell you that 14 hours of labor with nothing to eat, and all i begged for was Bovella's. I actually didnt eat until 1pm the next day, and still the first thing I ate was Bovellas.
but seriously, dont take my word for it, (as Lamar Gooding put it).

Ok, this place has been around fo-evah(!) And if you go here you'll understand why!
I grew up nearby Bovella's and so did my father. Even HE remembers that when he was a kid, Bovella's' being the neighborhood go-to place for homemade desserts. I can't recall ever having eaten anything from here that I didn't thoroughly enjoy and I will personally vouch for the canolli.
It's not cheap but you really do get what you pay for. If you're looking to impress dinner guests or a date, take a stroll downtown to Bovella's and you won't go wrong; it's practically impossible. -

If you walk past this establishment while you are starving like I did, you will have no choice but to walk in. The smell from the outside is just divine. It prompted a short detour on my way to Wild Greens.
It's a bit pricey, I bought a mini apple crumb pastry for about 3 bucks. No 3 bucks isn't a lot but in the grand scheme of things it was. (I go to another bakery and get slices of cheesecake for $1.50.) I went on a Saturday, the place had patrons but wasn't overly busy. I saved my pastry and waited until 2am to eat it. Delicious. I would definitely buy another one. Great for late night snacking, especially if you are a lame like me and home on a Saturday Night watching Suze Orman.
Downtown Westfield is pretty active on the weekends, so be prepared to search for parking which is not free. Meters Only.

It's all about the tri-colored, italian cake cookies dipped in chocolate with a hint of almond flavor.
That's the best reason to go to Bovella's. Try them if you like those cookies, best I've ever had! -

Everything I bought here the other day was stale! The cupcake was DAYS old and I threw it in the garbage after one bite!
The sugar free cookies were also stale. Probably would have been good fresh.
My boyfriend likes to get the Rum Baba's here so I gave them an extra star for that, since he always says they are good.
The service could have been friendlier too, though it was rather busy when I was there. -

Cute Italian pastry shop. If you have been to Vaccarios in baltimore you have seen something very similar here. I ordered a couple of cookies and was pretty pleased with them. The pignoli cookies were great -- soft a hint of almond, and lots of yummy pignoli nuts. The chocolate chip peanut butter? (i think thats what they told me it was..) was good. More peanut butter-y than chocolate but good as well. What disappointed me was the chocolate hazelnut meringue cookie. The hazelnuts in the cookie had gone stale-- and there was no taste of chocolate just stale hazelnuts :( Disappointed in this one..
The cookies are weighed by the pound, same as they do here with vaccarios so i was not exactly surprised that my 4 cookies were quite on the pricy side. I was quoted a price ($13/lb) for the cookies in general and once i ordered the pignolies i was told that they were more expensive than the regular cookies at (~23$/pound)-- for 2 cookies that was $2.00. -

This place is completely insane. The wife and I popped in here after dinner one night in Westfield, because they looked like the type of place that would have good pastry and cakes. Boy, did they ever.
I ordered a canoli square and a tiramisu cupcake. The wife ordered a red velvet cake square and an eclair. It's tough to say which was the best of the bunch. We both tried each other's in addition to our own. The canoli square was very much a cake, and just kind of hinted at the flavors of a canoli, but it was incredibly good. The red velvet cake square was much more traditional, and was absurdly moist and flavorful. The tiramisu cupcake was also incredible, with a serious amount of espresso soaked into the bottom of the cupcake. The eclair was good, but not outstanding. The filling was awesome, but the pastry part was a bit dry. So the eclair was probably shut out of the three way tie for first place. -

This is a classic small town out of this world bakery. You cannot walk by this place without the smell of freshly baked pastries and coffee luring you in. The oreo mousse bombs are to die for. Also, best hot chocolate I've ever had in my life - and that's a bold statement!!

Cute Italian pastry shop to get your cappucinno and Italian cookies. I can't say the pastries look appetizing but the cookies are. Expensive at $13/lb but I guess that's typical for Italian pastry shops. The lemon drop cookies and sprinkle butter cookies with raspberry filling were delicious.

It's too bad the service stinks because the dessert and pastries were actually pretty good. If it wasn't for the unpleasant service I would've given the place a better rating. My wife and I thought the lady behind the counter could've been more friendly...she was just ehh. I think I'll give my business to Crumbs across the street instead.

I love their Italian cookies, and when I don't have time to bake on my own for a get together I go to Bovella's to get a box of cookies and they are always a hit! I've always had good service and love this cute, homey bakery!

Having grown up in Brooklyn, I've seen a ton of Italian bakeries in my time, and visiting Bovella's felt a bit like a homecoming of sorts. The warm, atmosphere in the place is gentle and inviting. Most of their furniture is dark wood and it really works with the bread lined walls behind the counter and the huge array of baked goods.
I haven't sat down to eat here, but I'd love to one day (I'm usually running to the nearby Trader Joe's when I come here). So far I've tried almost every single one of their macaroons.
Among my favorites are the almond and coconut macaroons. Unlike the ones I used to get in other bakeries that were heavy and super sticky, these are light but chunky and substantial. They all have different flavor profiles and don't just taste like coconut macaroons with nuts tossed on them. I've also had their lemon cookies with icing and they were fantastic, just the right amount of tartness and sweetness balancing each other out.
The service here is fast, efficient and friendly. The cashiers were super patient with my girlfriend and I as we pelted them with stupid questions including "How do you pronounce that?!"
If you're ever in Union County in New Jersey, definitely pay Bovella's a visit. -

Very cool bakery! Living in Hoboken with the Cake Boss (of Carlos' Bakery) I was a bit hesitant to venture into another Italian bakery. This place had a good selection of Italian favorites (like lobster tails).
I had a tiramisu cupcake which was delicious! My hubby got the mini lobster tail -- which I thought was ok compared to Carlos' in Hoboken (which I crave all the time!)
Will have to go back to try the other pastries and the gelato. I will give 4 stars for ambiance, variety, service, and tiramisu.Listed in: Sweet Tooth

My dad, Michael Bove, started this business in 1949. He has since passed on and would be so proud that the Bovella's of today has maintained the quality of his product. Hats off to EVERYONE at Bovella's. Keep up the great work. Now if you could figure a way to send virtual pastries...:)

Albeit pricey, the products are of quality and it is not hard to leave this store with $50.00 of bakery products. I have to really watch myself as I have done it several times, when I had planned to pick up a few pastries. Most bakeries in the area, at least the ones that I have visited, have pastries which taste like biscuits, not at all like pastry. So when I make my weekly trip to TJs I also stop in Bovella's.

Got a traditional Italian birthday cake for my father from here (yellow cake, fruit inside, hint of rum, whipped cream on outside and sliced almonds around it). This was one of the freshest and tastiest cakes I have had in my life. Place is clean, employees are friendly and they take credit cards.

I love everything red velvet in this bake shop. Red velvet cake, cupcake, cheesecake, and squares..they're all good. I've tried their carrot cupcake and other pastries which were all good as well. The only thing I was not too crazy about is the italian cheesecake; I think it was the ricotta I didn't like. Service is ok. Every time I come here the place is full of customers so I feel rushed when I'm ordering. Nevertheless, I still like this place.

I came here with my mom and aunt for a treat one Saturday afternoon. This place is small inside, not much seating, but we snagged a table by the window. Everything looks delicious and it was very hard to choose just one thing. I had an iced coffee and it was perfect. I ordered the Oreo mousse bomb, which was insanely good and definitely very filling - I brought half of it home. I'd come back here if I needed something special for dessert.

Bovella's Pastry Shoppe is one of the gems of downtown Westfield. They have been in business since 1949 baking homemade Italian pastries, cakes, and cookies. Their business also includes custom wedding cakes and Venetian tables for events.
Want to blow people's minds at the next birthday party? Order one of Bovella's rum cakes. It's like eating a cloud.
Their Italian cookies are the best I have ever tried, with a very large variety available daily. They do a lot of macaroons (light, chewy egg white-based cookies). Variations include pignoli nut, almond, walnut, chocolate-coconut, chopped peanut, and more. They also have a large selection of Italian pastries, giant biscotti, grissini, croissants, and breads, as well as some gluten-free products.
They do bake delicious, picture-perfect challah breads. Odd for an Italian bakery, but I'm not complaining.
The store has recently been beautifully remodeled, with seating added, and offers an espresso bar, granitas and smoothies, and wonderful Capogiro gelato, shipped in from Philadelphia.Listed in: Good local bakeries

This is my "go to" place for bread in Jersey - I'm over in Scotch Plains and I aint making it up to the Guinea Triangle just for bread (aka Bloomfield, Nutley or Belleville). The girls behind the counter on Sunday morning are hot - the way it should be in a bakery, sweet enough to kill a diabetic. They got the usual Italian staples - butter cookies, pignolis, etc. I bought two long loaves of semolina, froze one, and between today and yesterday, devoured the other one, and that's why I'm a fat bastard that can't fit into his old size 31 A & F jeans and now goes for the biggest pair he can find just for an excuse to wear a belt - I can't go above a size 36, otherwise I'm going to need to shop at the Tall and Fat stores. Thanks, Bovella's!!!

I actually stumbled across Bovella's because I was going to Crumbs bakery across the street. When I travel, I like to visit local bakeries and am SO glad I found this place. If you want AUTHENTIC, fresh, delicious Italian pastries- go here! I asked the guy behind the counter what his recommendations were, I ended up getting a (mini) tiramisu, a (mini) red velvet cake, mini rum ba-ba, fudge ball, an eclair, and a couple savoardis (crispy ladyfingers). They were all delicious! The space is cozy (read: small) so when its busy its a bit crowded, but well worth it.
