This is a great little neighborhood coffee shop. Always the most hip and trendy hang out here. Great place for Wi-Fi and a quick latte. They also welcome you to bring your own cup which is fun and personable to the locals who live near. Not only do they have your normal coffee shop drinks and pastries but they serves sandwhiches and salads.
This area of town is very cute and The Pig is no exception!
This coffee shop is cool, hip and very el lay. I came here last night after a trip to the Griffith Observatory and was craving a soy chai latte. The chai latte had a great flavor to it. It definitely tasted like what a chai latte should taste like unlike those brewed at Starbucks or even the powdered ones made at home. However, the only quibble about the drink was the price. It's pricier than your average coffee shop for about the size of a grande. I also got the banana bread which was dee-licious. It tasted homemade and had it been warmed up, probably would have tasted like perfection. Despite it being cold, it was still very tasty and they used the right amount of nuts and had just enough fluff to the bread.
I can see why other yelpers complained about the nearby parking, because even on a Wednesday night, parking was still fairly tight. Another reason to the missing stars, they ran out of apple cider, biscotti, and croissants.
I actually am a big fan of themed environments, but I didn't like Bourgeois Pig.
First, parking was a nightmare. Good luck finding a spot on a neighborhood street.
The interior is funky, but not impressive or endearing. It didn't feel clean.
I sat in the famous tree room in the back. I expected it to be really cool, but in reality, it was just very tacky. It's very very dark with some ill-designed colored lighting chucked in random places. To be honest, the entire room had a weed den / ooh-magical-mushrooms feel to it.
My iced mocha was the biggest, most expensive cup of milk I've ever bought. If the cup were downsized, maybe the drink would have tasted like something.
This place is cooler than a cat pajamas.
You gotta try thier Chai, its off the hook. Its more spicy than other Chai's that I've had at starbucks.
The blue walls and the chandelier create a cool atmosphere. Its not too noisy and I love to take the honies to this place at the end of a hot date.. The spicy chai spices up the chemistry instantly!
I normally take my women to Birds for a yummy snack and then head on over to the b.pigg for desert.
Only the chillest and illest for the WILL.
*** thx for reminding me of this, Carlos. ***
BP is my fave coffeehouse in Hollywood.
I have been coming to BP for years now.
Last wk I met a friend here and enjoyed
a chai latte together in the "forest room".
Forest room, you might ask? Yep, forest!
They have a room that is built AROUND
fully grown (elm) trees and it's enclosed.
It's dark with green lights for illumination.
There's several sofas placed in there too.
There's also a billiards room, a cafe bar,
an outdoor smoker's patio in front, and
several large wooden eclectic tables ...
They play everything from rock to house
to alternative music on the sound system.
So Bohemian could be an understatement.
***btw the chai latte was quite delish too. ***
HOW have I not Yelped Bourgeois Pig yet? Preposterous!
This is my favorite coffee shop with an identity crisis. It looks like a bar, but they serve coffee, tea, sandwiches and pastries. Such a perfect place for mid-week relaxing or for a mellow date with a special someone.
Every single time I've come here, the "bartender" has been extremely friendly and helpful with a sense of humor and great coffee-brewing skills to boot. Can I keep one of you? I'm not really a morning person, and I think my own personal barista with a sense of humor could help matters some. Now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind keeping some of you overnight as well, but I digress...
Aside from a great staff and pretty freaking decent coffee and tea, I just love how this place LOOKS. They have a campfire themed room in the back of the place that's super dark with fake trees, fake fires (read: really cool lighting), a lot of cushions and sofas and fireflies on the ceiling. Ummm... can you say "I'm getting LAID tonight?"
They also have a pool table with two hipsters always pretending they know how to play (they never do). Add to all this their super creepy bathroom (looks like a crime scene from Law & Order; yes, I watch L&O AND enjoy it damnit) and you have a legit hangout spot.
The parking situation is balls but that's not their fault, so they get 5 bright red stars regardless of the car hoopla.
I just moved into the Hollywood Hills from the East Village in NYC and this place to be a little like home. From the extremely busy sidewalk scene on Franklin Ave with the cars whizzing by, firetrucks rushing with sirens blazing, and the ambulances quickly in tow to the constant chatter of the people walking by, I felt instantly at ease.
As for the goods... The beans were on point and my double americano over ice was damn tasty. The guy behind the bar got it out quick and wasn't drunk or dirty, at least not visibly so not sure what the other people are bitching about. My take is if you want quick service by a high schooler head over to *$ and quit whining.
I didn't hang out in the inside, preferred the outside scene so I can't comment much on my take on the decor, music, or people.
Overall, 3/5 - the coffe was solid, priced about where it should be for the location, but wasn't blown away.
So, it was last night that I discovered this gem and I almost cried a little bit. I was leaving the comedy club next door and just looking for somewhere to tinkle and hOLY COW, to my surprise I ran into this enchanting indoor forest/fairytale dream/mushroom haven/mystic land. I thought I had died and went to heaven or someone spiked my drink with something crazy, not even joking it was the most mystical place. I live for this shit!! I didn't even order anything, I just sat in their back room, "the forest room," enticed by everything around me. Gnomes are born here. The pictures do no justice what so ever, it's too dark in the room to get a decent photo.
uhm. the more I come here, the less enthralled i become. it's kinda like *Disneyland*. you come for the experience maybe a few times, but it gets a little distracting/annoying after awhile. the decor and lighting inhibits one from studying/working, so all that's left is people watching. and while seeing the errant celebrity sashay through is diverting, it still has nothing to do with your own life. also the wi-fi is tempermental.
coffee's pretty good. the place just isn't my scene though. too much neon, not enough lighting to get my work done.

This coffee shop is really cool. There are always musicians, screenwriters, all kinds of creatives lounging around, reading or working on their latest project. The coffee is really good. I have never tried the tea, but I think I'll have to try the chai latte next time I come. It's also awesome that they have free wifi.
The last time I came here, there were 3 hipster types sitting in the front/couch area. They literally were sprawled out over the place, as if they were on h or something, eyes half closed, funk from last night all over them--it was so funny! posers. Still though, the Bourgeois Pig always has interesting people watching and great hot drinks. I think they also have sandwiches, and definitely have muffins, cookies, etc if you need something to go with your caffeine. I recommend with 4.5 stars.
This place sucks and has some seriously awful service. Someone's working super hard to be that bad. They're really expensive too! This place has been here for years and every time I've come in, it's been a different shitty person at the counter.
At least they have cookies.
I have been going to this spot for about 4 years since 2006 [and I live in West LA!]. So this definitely says a lot.
I usually come here at night with good company (usually with 1 or 2 friends) and it is always after a really good dinner in Koreatown or Hollywood (refer to my later review for Palms Thai Restaurant on Hollywood Blvd). Whenever we come here the Moroccan Mint Tea is always a must for me and the company that I bring with me. Be sure to tell them that you'll put the sugar in yourself (if you don't like it too sweet).
Their Thai Iced Tea is also a good choice if you're looking for the chilled drink for Summer and want something to please your sweet tooth while studying or writing (free wifi for you students or writers out there who carry your laptop everywhere).
The cafe also has this cool artsy bohemian vibe about it (which may seem popular for the hipster crowd haha) but for sure it is really a chill place to hang out for a good cup of tea and a good conversation with close friends. Or if you're luck you might find yourself looking at artwork on the walls which change every month (and are even on sale).
Lastly, the most amazing part of this place is the chill out room in the back end that looks like a forest with a fake campfire. There are comfortable couches and pillows which you can sit and recline on while you look up at the stars (or the Christmas lights that are set on a off/on timer to give off the effect of flickering stars =])
yup...I'm a fan.
If you want a late night coffee, this is the place to go. Located on the corner of Franklin and Bronson, since this is a very trendy block, it is usually packed on the weekends. Parking can be very tough, but I usually go up about two blocks on Bronson, or the side streets off there.
The place itself has really cool décor. The main area has tables/couches typical for any lounge, there is a pool table, that takes quarters to play. You should also check out this room in the back, which has a very fantasy-like look to it. For food and drinks they have very nice lattes, and some good deserts. I think it is a bit overpriced, but then again most coffee shops are. Also it would be nice if they had a larger sandwich selection. They do not serve alcohol here, even though the place does look like a bar.
Between the lighting and music, it's not a place where I can get work done. But it is an awesome place to go and relax.
The good: really good coffee (and vegan cookies), good service, and a spectacular setting. It's like someone's basement but much cooler and larger, and with a portal to an enchanted fairyland.
The maybe-bad: SO DARK. Not a place to get work done, for me at least. Yet there are a lot of pretentious types doing just that, apparently.
I really wish that you could give 1/2 stars, because this place deserves 3 and a half. My friend lured me to drive to this place after remarking, "Yeah, Bourgeois Pig is epitome of hipster coffee shops in Los Angeles." Of course, with me being intrigued at the part where she made a humorous statement about hipsters and the possibility of good chai tea, I agreed to come.
Parking wasn't horrendous, as some reviews have said. I can see parking posing as a problem during the day, as a variety of shops share very few parking spots. However, at night, people tend to come and go; we found a man, who turned out to be Quentin Tarantino (!!!), walking to his car alone after circling the block once. I was pretty skeptical at first, but confirmed who he was with a photograph and by fighting for his parking spot. But I digress and this is a different story altogether.
Right after walking in, I was stoked. Stoked because the ambiance of Bourgeois Pig was exactly like I would imagine a coffee shop. Dim lighting, comfortable antique chairs, the smell of fresh, roasted coffee that greets you right when you walk in. Mmm. They also have a variety of bottled drinks, so if freshly prepared drinks don't tickle your fancy, you can choose from different sodas to sparkling bottled waters. Although the shop looks small from the outside, the interior is pretty spacious. My friend was also right about the hipster occupancy of this place. There were many hipsters running amuck, aged 19 to 27, with American Apparel, tight pants, and even a few fixed gears parked outside.
The actual drinks is what downgraded this place in my mind, however. My friend ordered the 'Bourgeois Latte' while I just picked up the Chai Tea. They weren't AMAZING, but they were not terrible at the same time. Just okay. The latte was just overpowered by the amount of milk that the barista added, while the chai was decent with spices, but had nothing to offer to my tastebuds. Bourgeois Pig's brownie cheesecake was also just 'decent', nothing extraordinary.
The prices of this place are decent, somewhat pricier than a regular coffeehouse. There was only one barista working, with quite a few (5-6) people lined up so the wait was somewhat long. The barista, though, was extremely entertaining and attempted to accommodate everyone. Overall, I enjoyed my first visit to the Bourgeois Pig and would come back, but probably not on a regular basis.
Not a lot to say. We waited at the counter for a few minutes while the guy chatted with another customer. He was standing 2 feet from us and never made eye contact. I smiled when he looked in my direction. No sign of acknowledgment. The place was virtually empty. We left and as we walked out the door my partner heard him say "goodbye customers!" She almost turned around to clock that motherfucker.
Ah, The Pig. The Pig is a scene. Cool people hang out at a cool place. The interior is pretty awesome. I love the forest room. The coffee and treats are decent, but way over priced.
Upside? You're right next to Counterpoint Books. You can spend $5 on a book and then spend $5 on a drink. Well, the book part is cool at least.
I love this place for two reason. The chai tea latte and the forrest room in the back. You just have to come check it out because of the atmosphere this place has. I've only come here late at night and it's fully awesome.
If Janis Joplin and Che Guerva had a child and that child opened up a coffee shop, this is the place that would have ripped it off.
Pretty cool spot but the hipster doofus barista was giving us the cold shoulder. "Hey I'm from Chicago. What's a good venue in the area?" This guy was wearing a trendy early 80s punk rock shirt and replied, "I don't know man, I don't really go to shows." Then he turned to his friend and talked about his jeans for 20 minutes.
I'm almost sure the baristas are all actors, comedians or a mesh of the two because it seems like they're always putting on a performance when I order my coffee here. If the statement seems ambivalent, it's because I'm not sure if I'm annoyed or entertained by the usual five-minute wait for me to GET my coffee.
I've been coming here since the days the Pig had TWO pool tables and no Moroccan-themed room (now it's a forest that should probably be obliterated like every tree in Apocalypse Now). The place is still dimly lit, so it's difficult to concentrate on any work, but the vibe is quintessentially LA and eclectic, which I do enjoy. If you forget to bring anything to read, free publications like the LA Weekly and The Onion are readily available, and there's also a convenient, and awesome, magazine stand at the adjacent boutique.
The coffee and tea are fine, but a bit overpriced. What you can't argue with is the free-wifi. Just ask the barista for the password and they'll gladly oblige.
This LA coffee shop has a very unique atmosphere and decor. The forest room (it used to be a candle-lit Moroccan theme with floor cushions) in the back is a cozy spot to come with some friends to talk & chill, bring a date or even just to come solo and relax while reading your favorite book at the moment.
The tea and coffee isn't bad, but it's a little bit on the pricey side... then again, you're probably paying for the atmosphere and free internet access.
The music used to be really good 90% of the time - but now, it's hit or miss. But still, Bourgeois is one of my favorite coffee shops in LA.
Only go here if you enjoy waiting 20 minutes for a bad overpriced latte served by inebriated baristas with dirty fingernails.
'nuff said.
Pretty sweet place! If I'm on the east side, and there is nothing else to do, but I want to impress artsy/intellectual friends, I will take them here. The decor is awesome...I feel like I'm in a suspenseful and creepy, but interesting part of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.
My friends and I got there late one Saturday night, to order hot chocolate and Italian sodas, to find only one guy working the bar. We were all so impressed at his enthusiasm! He seemed very excited (in a good way) about the smallest things to the point that it seemed like you were the only one he was talking to. If you looked back, you'd see a long line. His customer service was worth the longish wait in line. I can't believe I just said that. Kudos!
There is a pool table, regular tables (some people set up computers), and a couple areas to lounge in which have fluorescent lighting.
I can't wait to go back! I want to hit this place up at least once every 6 weeks. Parking is kind of a hassle though:/
I'm reasonably sure that young Charles Widmore from LOST served me here last night...
anyways, The tuna sandwich was actually one of the better tuna sandwiches i've ever had!
Despite the douchy-sounding name, yes, I am a fan. I'm all about ginormous kettles of tea for $4. They pump the music a little loud for my taste sometimes, but in general it's a good spot to hang out with one or a few friends. The baristas tread the line between being antisicoal and awkwardly overzealous.
If it was walking distance from my apartment I'd be there all the time.
the pirate's chai is good.
it's light.
and everyone in there has a laptop.
I really dig this place, with its big room, the "dark forest" theme in back, a pool table that I have yet to see anyone play, and strong drip coffee -- well, an Americano, but it's hot and has a great taste and that's all that matters. The lighting in this place is very dim, so reading is difficult, but it is a great place to shoot the breeze with friends, old and new.
Also I found the baristas here very friendly. One barista was playing a Robert Johnson CD -- Robert friggin' Johnson, fer god's sake! I almost married her on the spot!
The downside: Parking can be a bitch and the food is just okay (it's cafe food, so what do you expect). And if only we can get rid of the pseudo-screenwriters parked at the tables for hours and that big Scientology castle across the street ...
Still the cafe reminds me of a Bay Area coffeehouse of the 1990s, before Starbucks came into town. Thanks for the memories, Bourgeois Pig.
Trendy little hangout. come here with a few friends for a cup of coffee in a social environment. Or this could be a cute little hangout for a small date.
Sandwiches are really good too! Wait till you see the inside of this place. its like something out of a fairy tale.. so cute
I go here more for the very unique atmosphere rather than the coffee or deserts. The forest room is wonderful for a date or a small group of friends to gather, talk and relax. The lighting is nice and dim so that even though there probably will be others inside the room you will have a private feel.
The coffee is decent. A bit expensive for what it is but I suppose the atmosphere and wifi are worth the cost of a cup of coffee. The waitresses are usually very friendly. I haven't ever had a problem with the service, but then again I always manage to skirt the crowd by a bit.
It's definitely worth bringing a date by if things are going well. Also, they play some pretty great music. Last I was there Andrew Bird's entire discography (it felt like) was playing.
Loved the blue and red color scheme- reminiscent of an opium den of sorts. Didn't love that I put money in the pool table and no balls came out (--what she said) so that was a bummer.
That backroom was sweet- I only wish I had eaten some mushrooms before settling in. Lots of comfy spots to sit with a lover however, they were all taken once I got there so I guess the trick is coming in early. Also, though I saw someone scribbling away on a legal pad in the shroom room, it's doubtful she was accomplishing anything as it's quite dark.
The drinks are fine- I believe I had a green tea chai...it's really about the ambience here...and the hot barista *meeow!* and you know, the painfully ironic hipsters that we so dearly cherish.
As a UCB'er that has to - or rather enjoys - seeing many shows, I require some sort of refreshment to accompany me along with my comedy companion (he is refreshing, but unfortunately not enough satisfy my hot beverage addiction). Since the pig is right next door to the UCB theater it offers wonderful convenience.
I have become obsessed recently with chai lattes. I know, I am behind the trend. I had a latte one day on a whim instead of my traditional Americano, and was hooked. Since then I have tried chai lattes in every coffee shop I come across, as well as buying a damn frother in order to recreate one at home. As a matter of fact, I write this while sipping my very, very sad attempt.
Now onto this little piggy.. the barista type behind the bar told me I would love their chai. I was skeptical, I mean I have heard that before and have been disappointed. He served it up, as Mr. Spades ordered my previously beloved Americano (This is strong! - his actual quote). Yes, the coffee drinks are darn good too, but the chai...
It was divine - spicy, sweet, creamy. Everything you could want and more. As I slipped into a dreamy chai coma, harps played, angels sang, chickens danced - Oh, I will be back for this heavenly drink...
I know I'm about the zillionth person to say that the decor in here is awesome, but I gotta give it props. The worn-out couches in the front are a writer's best friend, and the best place to have a cozy, quiet conversation is in the foresty room in the back.
I occasionally stop in here to have a cup of hot chocolate with my boyfriend after going to dinner at one of the little restaurants off Franklin. I've yet to have an issue with the service, but I have seen other people impatient waiting for the cappuccino or coffee.
As much as I love this place, I do have a couple of complaints. First, the prices are definitely over-the-top for a coffee shop, but I guess you're paying for the atmosphere and wi-fi. My other complaint is that some of the music is LOUD. I was trying to work on a school paper here once, and instead I was trying to drown out the thumping Kylie Minogue tune. Keep in mind this was on a Saturday at 12pm. I understand late at night that turning the music up would be more appropriate, but during the day when the only people in the shop are people working on projects? Wow.
Anyway...I will still come here once in a while when I'm in the area and I want to grab a quick refreshment, but probably not to work on big projects without getting a headache.
Yet another good hangout after an appointment to catch up on work (and yelping) with free Wi Fi. This one's Wi Fi is the slowest of those I've reviewed so far, but has some of the best latte, great ambiance, best looking patrons, best conversations in the background (all sreenplays, web launches, gallery openings, all the cool stuff corporate grunts like me don't get to wallow in, along with something in German, I think). The barista dude is cool and full of smiles, though he makes you wait (maybe it's just b/c he's the only one back there and it's fairly busy). Stayed for a second drink, the Pirate's Chai, terrific break from coffee (but still has caffeine, otherwise, what's the point, like alcohol free beer!) So it's among the top for a hangout, a cool place to show your out of town friends, less so for actually working...
I went to *The Pig* for the first time years ago, unfortunately my ex brought me there and at first i thought " what in the world is this place"? But after the sample of awkward feelings i surpassed it by the comfort of the place.
They have a room to just relax, to drink your coffee (tea, soda, water), and conversate with your company. I loved it, It made me feel like i was in some Disney Alice In Wonderland scene. So dark a bit mysterious but very spacious. They make it as comfortable as it gets. PLUS the barista is just too funny and will always try to stir conversation with you.
If youre looking for a good place to play catch up with friends or just to relax on your own, I highly recommend this place. Although its not a celebrity a-list Cafe place, it makes you feel like you can meet new people and be at someones home.
DUDE. I used to love this place. I'd always bring people here. I loved the forest and the couches in the front. HOWEVER: First of all, yes, it's FREEZING in there now! It feels like somebody's basement on the east coast in winter! And more importantly, the barista -- the one with the sort of shaved or buzzed hair -- is SOOOO RUDE!!! He stands there watching you wait while he chats on the phone with friends. I go there all the time, and tonight I was interning nearby and needed a plastic fork. I waited patiently while he discussed, you know, Gossip Girl, or who used up all the toilet paper at his apartment, or whatever it was tonight, and when he finally hung up, I asked nicecly for a fork. He said, "sure," went to reach for it, then said, "What are you using it for?"
"Um... eating," I said. I told him someone had brought me some cheesecake but I had no way to eat it. He said he wouldn't give me a fork because i was eating cheesecake, and they sell cheesecake there.
I asked, "What if I were eating lasagna?" and he said, "You can't eat lasagna in here either."
"But I'm not eating in here."
Anyway, long story short, he kept saying things that didn't seem relevant to the conversation (asked me if I have a laptop) (why?? no idea), but refused to give me a fork, even though I told him I come in all the time and buy stuff. At one point he said, "One drink minimum."
Really? Do you think they really have an official policy that states, "Anyone wishing for a single free plastic fork must purchase at least one drink"? If so, then why the need for the 20 questions to determine my forkworthiness?
Look: if you don't want to give me a fork, just say so. Don't act like the troll under the bridge and make me answer a series of riddles. I wonder what I could have said that would have been the right answer so he would have given me the flipping fork.
I'm all for supporting small businesses, but after this experience, I'll pick Starbucks any day.
P.S. I ended up eating my cheesecake with chopsticks.
Not quite sure what to expect from this place (yes, I checked out pictures from Yelp, but sometimes pictures could be deceiving), I walked in nervously and throughout, looking for some comfortably-lit place to work and be inspired.
Doesn't exist. Comfortable, yes. Inspiring, maybe. But no such thing as "lighting" by normal standards in this coffee house! In the jungle (?) room, they could really use my Himalayan salt lamp!
Had I known blue-tinted lighting is as good as it gets, I wouldn't have came to get some work done. But open till 2am, raw food options available, and a funky ambiance is good enough reason for me to go back just to socialize, even when it's 20 min drive, plus more in the rain.
But my real motive? Their choco chip scones!
I dunno, coffee isn't great, service is pretty bad, lots of attitude, but it's next to a magazine store so you can buy a magazine and sit here and hide for a while and nobody will bother you.
That's honestly all I can say - they get 2 stars because they let you stay and leave you alone, which is pretty killer.
Oh and it looks like it was designed by drunk children, with bad art everywhere. Although I'd imagine drunk children probably make pretty rad art. I don't know, everything on this block is kinda crappy but hard to hate. Meh. Man I'm cranky today.
I love that it's not a chain. I love the haphazard couches and tables and lamps thrown around to make "decor" that's really more garage sale chic.
However, the slooooooooow service, overpriced drinks, and scary bathroom with dungeon lighting knock off a few stars. Also, the place just doesn't feel clean. For my non-chain coffee evenings I prefer places like Insomnia on Beverly or Kean down in OC, places where I don't feel the need to put a napkin on my chair before I sit down.
And I didn't even mention the barista who kept discussing "boners" with me and my friend, mixed up our drinks, kept asking if he could squirt whipped cream in my mouth, and was just plain randomly creepy weird. I think he thought he was charming his way into our pants. He was so, so wrong.
I admire that they made an effort to have some kind of personality, but I might be the only one that doesn't like the change from the Moroccan room to the magical forest thing they have going on. It just seems kind of cheesy, like the rain forest at the Mirage to me.
The atmosphere has always very chill when I've gone here. The baristas have been pretty friendly and attentive, though I can possibly seeing it being hit and miss. I haven't gotten the impression that the people here exude a cooler-than-thou attitude; maybe I'm just not intimidated by weirdos with laptops being that I am one.
The drinks are decent but nothing to write home about. Frankly, I probably wouldn't bother coming here if you're not in the area as parking can be annoying, but it can be a nice place to sober up after a night out or have a relaxed chat with friends.
It is a good place to get coffee late night. There is an abundance of comfy seats inside. There are nice restaurants next door like Birds. There is also Thai food down the street how convenient to to have coffee right here after dinner.
