10 reviews for Boulevard Pet Hospital
I am writing this review now, even though my beautiful Shiba Inu is still an inpatient at this vet. I am very impressed by the professionalism that all of the staff exhibits at Boulevard Pet Hospital. I can already tell, that they have very good work ethic, they are happy to be there and they are also very personable. They have been calling me daily to keep me updated on my doggie's progress. (He's doing very well, thank you!)
Not only are they pleasant to be around, but Dr. Schuchman has come up with a diagnosis for my underweight dog. After visiting 3 different vets, someone at this vet has FINALLY figured out what's wrong with him, upon his 1st visit here.
I read the good reviews here on Yelp, but to be honest, I am surprised about how confident I am, trusting my dog with this vet. I definitely recommend Boulevard Pet Hospital to anyone looking for quality and thorough health care for your pet.
~ I will keep you updated when I pick up my baby on Friday! ~
Im not sure how this place works, but I can tell you this, do NOT bring your pet there if you need Emergency attention. I brought my pet over there as a referral from Tri Valley Pet Hospital in Dublin. Spent over $1000 with Tri Valley to get my pet back from the brinks of death. My pig was almost back to normal when I got him to Blvd Pet Hospital. I dropped him off at 730 in the morning. They told me that their doctor doesnt get in until 11am. I called back at noon to find out how my pig was doing....oh guess what, he passed away! No phone call, nothing. They told my pig passed away over an hour ago. Yah, thanks for that! Now my sons friend is no longer around, how do you explain that to a child. Sorry son, the doctors office didnt let us know your pig died.
Thanks for your help "Blvd", thanks for absolutely NOTHING.
To make it even worse, they put my son's pig and shoved him in a plastic bag and put him in a spare box they had lying around. Not the best way to present my pet back to me. By the time I got to my vet, I found out that they didn't bother to take out the cathader they had on my pig's leg. Thnking back, I'm not sure that they even gave my pig the I.V. that I gave them or food that he had. Its no wonder he passed away. They probably never gave him his meds or attended to him the 4 hours before the doctor got to him.
Its funny how you can get your pet from one Emergency Vet and he is doing so much better than he originaly went in. Then you take it to another vet and they pass away. Mal practice? Who knows? Did they forget about my pig? Coulndn't tell you. But what I do know is that my pig was good, not perfect, when he went in. 4 hours later, he's gone.
If my pet was a dog or a cat, I'm sure he would got more attention or even better attention. I might have even gotten a phone call.
The primary veterinarian at this Castro Valley animal hospital - Dr. Schuchman - is a caring and very experienced vet who will amaze you with his intuition and his low-key methods for determining what is wrong and what needs to be done. I initially met him 10 years ago when I lived in Fremont. He treated two of my birds and a large iguana successfully with the ailments they presented. I now live in San Francisco and when I acquired a Moluccan Cockatoo about a year and a half ago, I decided to go to Bay Area Bird Hospital, as it was in SF and they were recommended by a few people, including the bird rescue group Mickaboo. I now regret this decision. Although the well bird exam went well enough, I was uncomfortable with the way these people handled birds.
In September, when my bird started to self mutiulate, I took her back to Bay Area Bird Hospital because of their close proximity. After paying over $1,100 for a diagnosis of zinc toxicity and a treatment plan that appeared to be harming my bird, I transferred her to Dr. Schuchman. She quickly recovered with his treatment plan, which was the exact opposite prescribed by Bay Area Bird Hospital as it involved no expensive medicine, tests or X-rays, just commonsense tips about bird care. I should have made the decision much sooner but am glad I did as I was fairly certain my bird would have died.
Dr. Schuchman's manner of handling birds is humane and gentle and he trains his staff in the same techniques. I can't describe the positive vibe to be felt at this small animal hospital. Whether you live in San Francisco or elsewhere in the Bay Area, it is worth it to go to his clinic. The clinic is only two blocks from the Castro Valley BART station! While Dr. Schuchman specializes in exotic pets (birds and reptiles) he treats all animals with great care. His walls are covered with Thank You notes, photos, and cards from clients over the years, as well as school children who come through on tours. It's an amazing experience just to walk in the door. You have to thank someone who saved a bird that says "I love you" when she sees you, and who lost that voice during the drama and trauma associated with Bay Area Bird Hospital, and almost lost her life.
So here's the scenario: Its Saturday at 10:00 a.m. I realize that my cat has not peed in his litterbox in two days. Not having smelled cat pee anywhere else in the house (and you knowwww you would, that stuff is pungent) I immediately got worried and tried to find a vet who would see him today. I first called the Grove Way Veterinary Hospital, and they couldn't fit him in today, but they recommended that I try the Boulevard Pet Hospital, and thank god they did! I called the Boulevard Pet Hospital, and the woman who answered the phone told me to bring him immediately and they would find a way to fit him in, as it can be life-threatening when cats get a urinary-tract blockage. I rushed over, and was seen by Dr. Schuchman (I think? I was too worried about my little guy to catch his name, but an older gentleman with a mustache.) within 20 minutes. One ultrasound later, it turns out there's nothing wrong with my cat and he's peeing sooomewhere (sneaky little guy). The doctor was great and knowledgeable, and recommended some products and techniques to calm him. They didn't even charge us for the exam because it was our first time there! We paid for the ultrasound, but it was super reasonable.
Bottom line: I'm a fan. The staff and doctor could not have been nicer, they fit me in quickly, and the cost was quite reasonable. Awesome!
I guess I have a $500 dog, cuz everytime I went here it was at least $500.... The last draw was when I only needed a refill and they required that my dog be seen for an additional $80 - and I had to purchase the meds there for over $100 when I found them online for half the price......
After that I switched to Chabot Vet. Clinic in Hayward.
I love these guys! They got me in at the last minute, were fantastic with my dog (and gave him acupuncture plus liver flavored pain killers), and worked with me to figure out a payment plan when it turned out I was short. And they didn't overcharge! Can't get much better than that.
Great folks!
**UPDATE** I have now taken two dogs and three cats to these guys, and they've been fantastic every single time. They always explain each procedure and how much it will cost, have often given discounts or just plain not charged me for certain things, and are always willing to take my call if I'm worried about something between appointments. Fantastic place!
I almost gave them 4 stars because that they don't have separate entrances for cats/dogs and their hours change fairly frequently (so plan ahead). But the bottom line is, there's no one I'd rather trust the health of my pets to than Dr Schuchman.
Dr Schuchman is a Cornell-educated vet with a gazillion years of experience, and he doesn't just throw technology at your pets, he examines them and knows whether an ultrasound is 100% necessary or not before he gives it to them. Which means your pets will get great care without it always costing $500 every time you take them in. This is not to say his facility is short on technology -- it's not -- they have the latest and greatest, and specialists available for special cases. I believe Dr Schuchman also treats reptiles and birds. The facility has a homey/retro feel.
To illustrate what I mean about Dr Schuchman knowing his "stuff," I had a negative experience once at the Emergency Vet in San Leandro (Dr Schuchman is not affiliated with them --- and alas, he's not available 24 hrs/day .) I took a kitten in for what was obviously a constipation problem and the vet (who was like 12 years old) ran $700 in tests to confirm that yes, he was constipated and needed an enema. Dr Schuchman would have been able to palpate the abdomen and immediately determine that the cat was constipated, and would have given him an enema for a fraction of what I spent at the ER vet.
Dr Schuchman is caring and compassionate and will surprise you with his dry wit. His staff obviously adores animals (despite the amount of blood my killer cat Rocky has drawn from them).
Quite simply, I love this vet. As a brand new puppy owner, I am like a terrified new mum, I'm not just going to let anyone handle my pooch! And I'll admit - I am a bit of a SF snob so it took a little holding of the proverbial breathe to take my puppy to a non-SF vet. That's why I'm so glad I found the amply-named Schuchman S M DVM Boulevard Pet Hospital.
This is a a vet that cares with a capital "C". The staff here are amazingly gentle and clearly love all types of animals. They went out of their way to gently explain the ins and outs of new puppy ownership and gave me tips on how to raise a good pup.
The technology used in this vet is indeed cool, but there's nothing like a good ol' poop sampling to make sure all is well with your pet.
Dr Schuchman is very thorough and the various photos on his wall of unwanted clients (ticks, lice, worms) as well as wanted clients (snakes laying eggs) make me feel like there's no pet problem he couldn't handle.
Would highly recommend this vet to anyone, no matter where you live!
I replied to a posting on Craig's List when I was looking for a kitten. Their office is open until 7 p.m. on some days, which is really convenient. They let me look and spend time with the available kittens and take as much time as I needed to decide which one was "the one". They require free spaying/neutering before you can take your pet home, which to me, shows me how much this office cares for the well-being of animals. They only charge a small $30 rehoming fee, which includes testing and 2 sets of shots. I HIGHLY recommend this office.
WooHoo is right, they are as good as it gets! Absolutely the most wonderful vet! His staff is professional yet caring. You get what you pay for and my family is worth every penny! Wouldn't EVER go anywhere else
