Dear Bouldin,
Your ice coffee has earthy undertones and makes me swoon. Also, the fact that I get a free refill on said ice coffee makes it even better! I love your veggie burgers (on my top 10 list in Austin) and your El Tipico is one of the most delicious breakfast things to order on a nice Sunday morning. I like sitting outside with everyone enjoying temperate fall days or sitting inside where the bustle makes a great ambiance. My first choice on first street! :-)
Love,
Me
Given this place is 40 feet from my house, I REALLY wanted to love it. However, waiting 30 minutes for our food that should take about 5 was less than fun. The coffee drinks were delicious and they had tons of choices. Sitting outside is pretty enjoyable the few months out of the year when it isn't hot but it also has some strange odor (hippies, dumpster nearby, etc.)
They do offer wi-fi but it is pretty hipster and there aren't a lot of laptops around.
So the hunt for a good veggie burger continues! I heard a lot of good things about this place so we decided to check it out. Driving there we missed it because it is a little hidden but upon passing you notice the green building tucked in a corner.
They are dog friendly but we can't exactly walk in and order with the dog. They prefer the dogs be tied outside on a leash and then you can order and sit outside. Me and my friend ordered a veggie burger each. It had bbq sauce on it....interesting? Yes it was!
The bread was good and so was the patty itself. I can not complain. The place itself was well exactly what you expect from Austin. Prices are decent and parking is limited so during peak hours go earlier.
I hear this place has the best coffee , I will definately be going back for brunch to try the coffee and other things off their menu.
This place serves some of the best coffee I've had in Austin. With a regular cup, you get one free refill, and I gladly take advantage of that. It can get pretty crowded, especially with laptop- and book-wielding folk, even more so when it is raining (the outside seats are not covered). Parking is horrendous - you may end up several blocks away when the place is not full. It is not a "sit down" place like Enoteca or South Congress Cafe, so I think the small number of waiters is good enough. You go up to a counter and order, take a number, and they bring you your food when it is ready. Speaking of the food, it is quite good, vegetarian, and fairly priced. The vibe is funky and South Austin-y, and I dig it.
Dear Bouldin Creek - I love you, but can you somehow add more tables? Maybe if you ditch some of the giant chairs and coffee tables...
What a fantastic breakfast spot. I wish they weren't so slow at getting you your food, but if you can afford the wait. do it! Don't go when your in a rush.
The only reason for 4 stars was due to the amount I was charged for the upgrades to my meal. If your going to charge more than a buck to upgrade something, let the person know ahead of time. Kinda lame guys...
The blueberry cornbread is amazing though. What an innovative idea!
The omelette I had that was very similar to their regular basil/tomato omelette, but this had more roasted pepper goodness and tons of nutty pine nuts. It was a totally unique texture for an omelette. The fruit was fresh and cold as well.
Overall a really damn good breakfast.
If you're going places for ambiance, and I know that you are - because you have food at home, this place beats, say, Spiderhouse; it is the more concentrated form of hipsterslacklery you are craving. Though the food is simple almost to a fault, you can play board games all day and feel the Austin all over you.
really love this place! wonderful coffee, that comes with one refill (self serve). i'm pretty sure that if you want a bottomless cup of joe, you will need to purchase some food with it. i've had their tacos, muffins and the wonderful queso that is sold to them by the gallons from vegan explosion (http://www.veganexplos...). i've had no problems with the quality of food, and the price is spot on.
here are some other notes
-very dog friendly!
-the coffee is really tasty
-great outdoor atmosphere
-you can buy leslie magnets here (get better leslie!)
-it's a bit cramped inside, but it makes it that much cozier
-extremely friendly staff in my experience
check it out!
I've always had good food here. It's vegetarian and because I don't eat most meat, I know that everything here will be something i can order. The menu leans mostly on breakfast items and breakfast is served all day. The prices are decent, the food is quite good and so is the service. When they are slammed, it can be a bit slow, so chill out, have a cup of coffee or juice, read a paper, talk to a friend or meet a new stranger while you wait.
Went there brunch/lunch time Sunday morning. I was really impressed with the veggie menu.
I ordered the Ren Taco and the "Chorizo" taco. The seating outside was really nice and there were plenty of people to observe. However, service , though friendly, was pretty horrible and my tacos left quite a bit to be desired; they did not taste particularly warm nor flavorful. Though I did have a delicious Iced Mint Mate.
Overall, the environment and menu were enough to give it 4 stars, but would not recommend going at peak times. I'll give it another try at a different time.
Let's see, good coffee: check. Good veggie food: check. Good adult beverage selection: check. Open late (I honestly don't even know when they close): check. Super close to my house: check.
This place pretty much has it all. A great place to start the night, and an even better (and sometimes quicker) place to end the night.
Be cool and ride your bike there, very limited parking.
I love this place. It's a rut, but I always get the slacker with the works - rice, beans, cheese, jalapenos - salad with ginger-miso dressing and the awesome cornbread. Everyone I bring here loves the place, too. The food is prepared with great care & concern and the place is sincere.
I typically am not a huge fan of breakfast, but not at Bouldin Creek Coffee House and Café. I took the advice of some reviews elsewhere and opted for the "El Tipico" and my friend got the "Blueberry Cornbread". We shared each meal and we both were pleasantly surprised, as the food was quite good. Their tofu scramble is made with nutritional yeast, but it appears as if they dip it in the nutritional yeast after cooking the tofu - good idea, it was really good! The décor was neat; I liked the bent up forks attached to the overhead lights. The employees were also very nice!
Bouldin Creek is cool... has a nice vibe (though it frequently smells of trash, due to the proximity of the dumpster to the outdoor seating area)
The coffee drinks and menu are quite imaginative, but typically fall short of impressing. Pretty average for the most part.
It's a great place to hang out... especially when the weather is cooler...
Great for socializing. It feels very easy and natural to talk to anybody there... people do study there... but there's never that anti-social kind of vibe you find at other coffee shops with the laptops.
Stopped by last night to try out the coffee. First - it was open -- Yay!
Ordered a Latte. It came in a beer mug? That was a little different. It had a good flavor, but was way to milky. I think the mug size was wrong for the Latte.
My wife really enjoyed the Local Breakfast Blend coffee.
We did not try the food, but it looked like great choices and I think I overheard that they served breakfast items all day.
This would be a great place to come with a relaxed group of friends and time to kill.
My new favorite coffee house! Well, not that I have a favorite. Haven't been "out for coffee" in quite some time, so it was fun to mix it up.
This place is really cute. Perhaps only a word that should be used for puppies and babies, but I cant think of anything else. Charming maybe? that's a little 'older' and involves less drool...
the outside is all funky and cool, with tables and dog bowls and signs and things, inside is kind of a hot mess - in a good way - and then there is a seating area on the side, and another on a covered patio.
So the menu you see in front of you when you walk in is only the drink menu plus like one food special. Ask for a menu so you can see the full range of awesomeness. This place is vegetarian. ALL vegetarian. I was a little nervous at first, but was in love at first sight with my Veggie-Chorizo breakfast taco (but burrito sized!). this bad boy was made with like 5 eggs, chorizo (tasted like the real thing but without the grease or guilt!), cheese, and I added avocado and beans. It was maybe $3. Seriously, WOW. Topped it off with an iced Mexican mocha (perfect blend of mild chocolate, kick of coffee and hint of cinnamon, ahhh) and was in heaven. great value here.
There is no shortage of things to do here. If you just wanted to veg out (hee hee...sorry) you could people watch and listen the really weird selection of music that kept switching genres. Or, you can grab a book or a game - of which they have plenty!
We picked up a game of scrabble that was from 1977. Actually it was two games because the pieces were different sizes. It was pretty ghetto, but it didn't stop us from a pretty intense nonstop game where we had to interrupt nearby patrons - is "ax" word? (Well it wasn't in that guy's dictionary so as far as I know, it isn't)
good times.
**Update: To whom it may concern, the person claiming to have "dominated" at Scrabble is the same word-wizard who tried to get away with "AX." Whatever. I opened with VIXEN (i know!!?) and somewhere in there I got a 39 point word. Suck on that. (I mean seriously, I gave you Whig, which is clearly a proper noun!)
PS. we never tallied the score. If you should happen to stop by one night in the near future and see two folks wrasslin under one of the tables out back, scrabble letters a-flyin, that's us engaged in a rematch.
Ahh vegetarian bliss. I love going to a restaurant knowing that I can order anything off the menu. It doesn't happen nearly often enough.
Took a stroll over to Bouldin Creek Cafe last night to check it out on the recommendation of a friend. The Cafe is "cute" and exactly what you expect for south Austin; the decor was odd and most certainly had a Bohemian flair to it. There is some outdoor seating and a porch area with some serious fans to keep you cool. Beware, some of the seats are broken.
To say the least, the clientele was interesting. The smell of Patchouli was at times overwhelming. There were hippies and hipsters abound. In fact, one of the patrons was inside the restaurant walking around barefoot, which kinda grossed me out. There were also a couple people who I thought could be vagrants, but whatevs, makes it more interesting.
They have a decent selection of board games, but were missing some crucial ones - Monopoly, Risk, and some cards. I picked Scrabble and I dominated ;). Then promptly dropped half of the letters in a bucket of water that had a dead roach floating in it, oops! Thankfully my brave companion fished them out.
They had a few good brewskis, which kept me happy and I also indulged in a Rice Dream ice cream sandwich. The gal I was with got some crazy chorizo breakfast taco that was massive and apparently delicious. She is one of those "heathen" omnivores (kidding) who knows the taste of real chorizo and claimed the veggie alternative was almost identical.
One last comment, it was a little confusing when you first go in there, but you order at the counter, seat yourself, and then they bring the food out to you.
I'll definitely be back, hopefully next time with a bigger appetite.
Quick update:
According to http://Dictionary.com: 'whig' can also be used as a noun, adjective, or *drum roll* a verb. They also claim that 'ax' can be a noun or a verb - for instance, "to get the ax". Guy with dictionary clearly lied.
Bouldin is okay. I've been here a few times to eat and study. The food is good but it's a little expensive.
I also am not amused by their screened-in back area, especially anytime between April and September. It is hot in there, even with the shade and is not conducive to studying. And this is pretty much the only place you can sit indoors besides the two or three tables cramped together in this hallway that leads back to the screened in area from where you order your food at the counter.
I have classmates who love it and I could really just pass. Never tried their coffee so can't vouch for that, but I hear it's awesome.
Parking is also a mess because their tiny little lot is always full so you're trying to find an open spot on the side of the road near them even though there are signs that say you can't park in front of some of the houses. *sigh*
This is hands down my favourite cafe in Austin.
I first came here 5 years ago while working on a project in the Bouldin Creek neighbourhood. I've been hooked ever since. Whether it's for breakfast, lunch, or a quick smoothie to go, I've never been dissatisfied. Service is always quick and friendly which is a huge plus given the space alloted to Bouldin devotees who patiently and quietly line up to place an order. Always worth the wait, too.
As for the food, I've recently evolved from the egg breakfast options (I think I've tried every option on the menu) to the baked oatmeal and I'm delighted. Lunch options are just as good. It's all so healthy and the overall atmosphere is very laid back that one can't help but eat and digest well.
For such a hot climate, their enclosed but not air-conditioned back patio, is one of my favourite places to be in the summer for breakfast. It's great to take a book, laptop, newspaper, or nothing at all, and just slow down. The outdoor seating options are always a pleasure for the sheer diversity of conversations over-lapping, the shade from the trees, and the ability to people watch or just watch the neighbourhood go by.
Though I'm not a coffee drinker, I hear that this is one of the best things about Bouldin. It smells pretty good, so I'll recommend it since my nose is ok with it and my coffee drinking friends give it high marks :)
Great place and love the sign!
fun little hipster hut somewhere in the woods of Austin (at least it felt like the woods). order at the bar and have a seat, enjoy the company, as the wait might be a while.
The watermelon gazpacho is homemade, chunky, and delish. The hummus is mediocre. And the pastries are so good, you'll want to grab a few extra to bring home.
Tried this unique local coffee shop last week and found it to be pretty awesome. What makes it unique you ask? It's the only vegetarian coffee shop in Austin and has some vegan friendly treats on the menu as well like the cookie sandwich. Even though I'm not vegan, the jumbo cookie sandwich got so many great reviews that I just had to indulge. Wow, talk about intense! Vegan doesn't always mean healthy that's for sure. It was a little too sweet for my taste but found it better when I removed lots of the icing sandwiched between the cookies. Loved how smooth the black velvet iced coffee tasted as I drank it black to appreciate the quality of the beans.
Two seating options. Outdoor patio which has some shaded spots and back room. Opted for the patio but will try the back room sometime cause I hear there are games back there. Very friendly serving staff who gave me my second coffee in a to go cup without even me having to ask as I was picking up to leave. Check out the website to see what they serve to help you decide ahead of time.
Coming back fo sho.
Tried this after a very tiring 10 mile run this past Saturday. I had the Lavender mocha which was delish. My friends had the egg sammich and she said they were some of the best eggs she has ever had. There was a lot of stuff I would have loved to try. I will just have to go back.
I was surprised though that they open so late on Saturday morning (9am) being that coffee is their main thing. This however, didn't keep people away.
I love Bouldin Creek Coffee House! It is a vegetarian cafe which is a plus for me as most places have few vegetarian dishes and they generally aren't very good. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu and the coffee is delicious.
The environment is funky and laid back with lots friendly staff. There is limited seating and parking (ride a bike there if you can) during busy hours as it can get pretty packed for brunch but for good reason!
When the weather is good the patio is a great place to eat. I would however like it better if the dumpster was further away from the seating as it breeds flies which are pretty annoying and can smell a bit if you sit too close. Also the birds can be pretty bold but that is pretty much any outdoor patio in Austin.
All in all it is great. If they move the dumpster I will give them 5 stars!
This is a great south Austin place to go. The food is amazing, when you finally get it. It is usually at least a 30-40 minute wait for your food. Don't go if you're in a hurry. The coffee is fantastic and the service is very friendly.
oOooOo Bouldin Creek
We must be in South Austin. Bouldin Creek = South Austin.
Oh but its not just your run of the mill coffee house - no sir ee. they have fresh food made in house and a whole variety of it. I've tried a bit of everything here and though its all vegetarian, its alll good. Veggie Royale is really hearty for the traditional meat lover, Summer Sammich is a Summer Sammich + perfection. The vegan desserts are some of the best vegan goodies I've ever had. (Choc/PB vegan cupcake is on par with Sugar Mamma's, o ya). BFast = Tasty & Plentiful.
This is a great place to chill out, read a paper, play some board games, be pensive and what not. Not a great place to get serious work done, but its definitely one of my fav bfast spots.
"Are you in porn?" (asked of me by a man who sat down 2 minutes prior)
"Why don't we let you people o'ver there just fight things out amongst yourselves?" (asked of me by the homeless man who assumed I was Indian because he overheard me tell my companions that I lived in India)
"It's YOUR life. You have to do what you want" (said to me by a veritable shaman. in the context it was said and the fact it was my 34th bday night, it really hit home.)
"I will INFECT your beard" (said by my companion to a bearded man)
These quotes were just the tip of the iceberg. I won't get into the squirrel tails hanging above the doorway as an indicator of one's worth.
Bottomline, you will see and HEAR all kinds of awesomeness here. I had about a thousand beers thanks to my companion. This is her haunt. She calls it 'my coffeeshop' (thought she owned a coffeeshop). I can see why she has such affection for it.
It's truly one of a kind.
After reading other fellow yelpers' reviews, I decided to check this place out for breakfast and I have to say, the food and service definitely met expectations.
I had the Breakfast Sammich on whole wheat bread and I added spinach, with drip coffee to drink. Both were very tasty! The sandwich, which was actually quite cheap, was very filling too.
I'd recommend (if you can wake up that early) to get here before 9am to beat the morning crowd. Watch out for parking though. Be careful about parking on the most right spot in the lot. People will park perpendicular to it and box you in!
Cool place to hang out early in the morning. Will definitely go back!
Indoors or out, day or night, alone or with company--Bouldin Creek serves delicious food prepared with real, fresh ingredients for prices hard to beat in Austin. There's just something about this place that makes me feel happy!
If you've seen and enjoyed Linklater's film Slacker, you'll likely get a kick out of Bouldin Creek. Despite the unconventional appearance of many of its patrons, there's definitely an old school, downhome vibe about the place, which is often hard to find nowadays, even in Austin.
The Kool Summer Sammich is a satisfying choice when you're in the mood for more than a salad, and the Garden Breakfast is a delightful, wholesome way to start the day--2 free range eggs any style, steamed spinach, herbed roma tomatoes and lemon wedges. The coffee here is consistently good too, and they have a variety of beverages--from Green Gunpowder iced tea to a "Nutella Mocha Freeze" to beer and wine. A little something for everyone, and one of the few veggie places I've been with my carnivorous boyfriend where he is not looking for "second dinner" afterwards, as they say in the Shire.
I dream about vegan cookie sandwiches.
I love the food here and the atmosphere is so genuine. Good art, good mixing. Usually good music :)
Some coffee shops try a little too hard to be edgy or "anti-starbucks" or hip. Bouldin Creek is just cool and they don't have to remind you. I like bouldin creek because people don't b.s. you there. They are authentic.
Seating inside is limited, but I like the back screened in patio (awesome night time space without the bugs:)
I like the lemonades and iced coffee in the summer. Also, they have wine/beer, so all your friends are happy:)
The place is great year round.
Now, there are lots of places in Austin that have great breakfasts - Magnolia, Kerbey Lane, Satellite - all great. But their coffee? Meh. A lot depends on whether they just made a fresh pot before you order.
And, there are also lots of places in Austin that have great coffee - Pacha, Thunderbird, Flightpath, Kick Butt, Epoch, to name a few - mmm, love the joe. But their food? Reheated breakfast tacos made elsewhere and microwaved quiche. Meh.
So what's a coffee-hound to do when looking for both a good, hot breakfast and a stellar cuppa? Well, sigh no more, people, sigh no more. Bouldlin Creek satisfies both the need for good coffee, and simultaneously, the need for good, fresh grub.
Plus, it's also a great place to just hang, relax, sip your joe, and feel no hurry to free up your table for the next pancake-deprived soul. And it that weren't enough, if you can imagine it, there are actually more tattoos on the staff and customers here than at the Omelettry! Seriously!
Best food recommendations: the Bouldin Creek omelet (3 eggs, spinach, garlic, mushrooms, onions and cheese) is really great - and totally healthy if you skip the cheese. Lots of sides come with - I recommend the organic red & black beans. Very tasty in a lightly spicy thick broth. It's also worth it to pay the extra buck for the potato pancake side. For something totally unique, try to blueberry cornbread, which comes freshly grilled and accompanied by agave nectar as syrup. Great stuff. But best of all, the regular drip coffee is great - no need for fancy pants drinks. You can get your drip coffee with one free refill for $1.75 or bottomless for $2.75.
Love this place - coffee & food both.
Eclectic coffee shop that attracts nouveau hippies, the biggest knock against the Bouldin Creek Coffee House is that Austin has better places.
Always delicious food, always chill vibe.
The parmesean peppercorn dressing on the salads is freakin' amazing. One of the best salad dressings ever, it even beat ranch *gasp*.
Wonderful place to pass a day an eavesdrop on great conversations from Austin's most colorful. The summer sammich is also crazy good. They're big into organic-style goodness, it's all veg.
This place is awesome. You can just feel the Austin vibe everywhere. For someone like me who has been trying to explore more vegetarian/vegan food options, it is definitely the place to be.
I got the Veggie Royal (veggie Burger with chipotle-pesto dressing) that was really awesome and it came with chips and salsa. The salsa thankfully wasn't some watered-down goop. It was very thick and hearty, and definitely had some kick and flavor to it.
There's lots of seating inside and outside, and it's a pretty cool place to just hang out. Will definitely return to try out the breakfast options.
I think I found a great coffee place south of the river. I went here before I had to go into work. I had breakfast. Well I wonder if it was lunch since it was around 2:30 PM. So maybe I'll say I had an afternoon breakfast. I had their Bouldin House Omelette with Tofu Scramble and it was good. I'm not a vegetarian but they made it real good and they made the potato hash cake into perfection.
Their was a mixture of people hanging out at the Bouldin. While I was waiting in line, the guy at the counter went down the line and ask what everyone wanted to drink. Never had that happen before. Definitely going back there again.
Bouldin Creek has that funky authentic Austin vibe that I've come to love. The best places I've been to in Austin have been either food trucks or diners dropped in the middle of random residential neighborhoods with run-down picnic tables, fold-up chairs, or tree stumps for seating. On a Sunday, this place was bustling. With a 45-minute wait for food, the staff was as friendly, accommodating, and upfront as possible. They brought us coffee while we waited in line to order and suggested that we get a plate of pita and hummus as a snackatizer until our food arrived. The hummus arrived only about 10 minutes before our main dishes but it was still delicious.
I strongly recommend the breakfast tacos. For only a couple bucks, you get a heaping mound of scrambled eggs and your choice of toppings on a large tortilla. I also recommend the granola. I do *not* recommend the baked oatmeal. Sounded like heaven from the description but it came out dry and lacking flavor despite all the apples and raisins. Grab a seat, chill out in the sun, and enjoy the vibe on a lazy hung-over Sunday.
Great food.. good atmosphere. Try my favorite -- the kids breakfast with Rye and Cantaloupe w a double foamy latte - I let them surprise me with flavor!!
For the chill, patio-culture forward vibe that's omnipresent here, I'm at least a little surprised that I rarely end up at Bouldin Creek. It seems the epitome of the relaxed South Austin mojo, and I always enjoy myself when I'm in. Thing is that in all honesty I'm not a coffee fanatic, and for that reason it's sort of hard for coffee houses not to get shortchanged by my circadian rhythms. That said, it's clear that the popular ones aren't sweating my absence, and to that end, last time in Bouldin Creek was as cool and gently bustling as ever.
I found myself desperately in need of some sustenance, and on a warm afternoon sank my chompers into a salad and meal the size of my car. Service was friendly and attentive, and it was clear that those who linger here are often joined by compatriots working / wi-fiing in solemn agreement. It's not rocket science, this coffee house business, but to do it right where Bouldin Creek has done things right, you have to pay attention to details. And on this day, those were details that felt on target and in the bag...not unlike some warm tidings served porch-side.
This is the 1st time I've been to Austin and I can honestly say that I was not expecting an organic, free range, fair trade, vegetarian cafe 2 blocks from where we were staying. "C'est la vie" say the old folks. It goes to show you never can tell. What a hip place this is! Everyone here was incredibly friendly and I love the fact that the waiters and cashier share their tips with the cooks. They also play cool music inside.
My girl got the Bouldin Creek Omelet that had mushrooms, spinach, garlic, onions, and cheese. It was good. The eggs were nice and fluffy and all of the veggies tasted very fresh. I got the El Tipico breakfast which as Stefan from Top Chef would say, "Was what it was." Eggs, Potato Hash, and a Salad. The only real standout food wise was the bread. This was, by far, the best whole wheat toast I've ever tasted. I can't imagine that bread better than this even exists. They get it from some local bakery in Texas. I wonder how much it would be to ship loaves to New York. But I digress.
The outdoor seating is great and shaded by these big beautiful trees. They even have a bucket full of milk bones for all the folks who bring their dogs. I would definitely be a regular if I repped the 78704.
I SO don't understand the appeal of this place.
I'm all for eclectic diverse interesting crowds but to be honest the people that were eating here for the most part were just plain dirty.
The guy at the table next to me had both of his feet crowched on the table edge sort of spread eagle style while he smoked the most huge and fowl smelling cigar I have ever smelled. The he informed his friend in a loud voice "dog left uh pile by the tree, ya gotz a shuvel?" Uh hello, eating here?
Speaking of eating..I attempted to order my standard bfact taco order (egg potato cheese and guac) only to be informed that they don't have potatos or guac... Sigh.. So I ended up with two cheese and egg tacos. Boring and bland and really didn't taste like anything at all.
Not to mention their "free wi-fi" is unreliable and stopped working all together after being there for about five minutes.
The dogs in general were uncontrolled.
My friend had an omlette that was so bad that we went to Dominican Joe's and got brownies to get the taste out of her mouth...
So yeah.... won't be back.
I love this place. The staff is friendly and gracious, happy and helpful.
The people and dog watching is fun. Playing Connect 4 while you wait is fun. It's a fun and comfortable, laid-back, inexpensive time.
I ordered a Veggin Out, good beans, brown rice, steamed spinach (just that, no oil or mystery liquid), and a side salad. Damn that Ginger Miso is good. 6.50 or so well spent.
My friend had an egg-based breakfast sandwhich and he said his coffee was excellent.
Love the space, love the staff, the food- for my vegan self- is like Casa De Luz with a sense of fun. Nourishing!
Love it.
