Hmm...is it me or did their portions shrink? I ordered the Best of Boudin's (clam chowder w/ 1/2 chicken pesto sandwich) and the sandwich looks like it is a lot smaller than what they usually serve.
Their 1 lb loaf of sourdough bread also looks like it shrunk but I'm not going to complain too much about this since they are giving away a loaf of bread a month and I got this for free.
Otherwise, the food is still good.

Of all the Boudin's I've frequented, this one is the best! Love the cool interior (they have booths… Read more »
The only thing I truly love about Boudin is its sourdough bread. Period. I think everything else that goes in it or top of it is just okay.
This particular location is one of my go-to spots if I don't want to wander away too far from the office for lunch.
I'd recommend getting there early around 11:30 am or later sometime after 1 pm if you want to beat the lunch rush, otherwise you'll have difficulty finding seating.
A San Francisco institution? OK. If you say so. I don't recall having any awareness of Boudin until my first job, as a secretary at Macy's. Dirty office, closet case boss with a nuclear temper, a job in which Xeroxing and collating were my main responsibilities... it suuuuucked. So, to quiet the voices and stop from hyperventilating, I'd run down to the basement and gorge on giant loves of bread and sauce. I mean, sourdough soup bowls.
These days, I get the soup in a plastic bowl. Because I can't be trusted with a bowl made out of bread. And I get a little salad. And to be honest, it's a pretty great lunch. And now the online calorie counter tells me it's also in line with operation Lose That Fat Ass.

Also, I once saw Kamala Harris having a working lunch here. Limo out front. Of Boudin's. Kinda weird.
SF's finest sourdough! Killer sandwiches, great soups...and do yourself a favor and get them in the bread bowl! YUM!
This is a cut above your typical sandwich shop at prices that are not far from going to Subway. The food is fresh, and delicious. The staff are usually very prompt and friendly too.
Great service! Decent breakfast food for $3.95 can't go wrong!
SOUP IN A BREAD BOWL?! oOH my goodness.. delicious to the inifinity and beyond! i love it!! ANDD TOBASCO SAUCE what can get any better than that! mmm MMH
How can you go wrong with a nice warm crossiant early in the morning thrown in with some friendly service.
So I give this location 3 stars.
I have a little secret, and it involves Boudin Bakery's tomato soup and the SF Weekly.
About twice a month, I escape into my own world at this location and hide out for a little privacy with the upcoming concert schedules and restaurant reviews. Whether I'm having an emotional day or it's rainy and blustery outside, nothing cheers me up more than this little ritual.
I leave work and walk down Market to this location, stopping to pick up the most recent SF Weekly and Guardian in front, and get in line to order. The staff are always super friendly, efficient and precise when it comes to my order. I then grab my number and head up to the upstairs loft and try to score a table alone next to the window overlooking the financial disctrict, so that I may devour my indie newspapers in privacy.
The tomato soup is so decadent and delicious, it warms my soul. If you plan on hitting the gym times ten that night then I say splurge and go for the bread bowl...but if you can't take that debit in your day, the spring salad is a good side selection. I love that the staff brings your order to your table...and I'm a sucker for re-fillable sodas :-)
All in all, the food is good and I love the ambiance. It allows me to escape from the chaos of downtown SF and have my own quiet moment once in awhile. It's nice to disappear once in awhile and just get lost reading while having a tasty lunch.
Yum, yum, and yum. I always get the tomato soup in a bread bowl. It's too good to resist. I'll have to try their grilled cheese, but the soup bowl always calls my name.
4 stars alone for the delicious food (as Dora the Explorer would say, "Delicioso!") but an extra star for the super nice cashiers. I've been there about 5 times in the past 3-4 months, and every time the cashiers are nice and warm. No attitude here!
I have noticed that there's a big divide between the cashiers and the bussers/people who deliver the food to your table. The cashiers are super friendly and nice, but the other staff look bored and do everything they can to avoid talking to you. I find it interesting...they're probably paid less and hate their jobs? It's just an interesting thing to watch...
Yum!
Wednesday night, I was forced to take the Bart to the city... One good thing that came out of that was I got to go to Boudin which is located next to the Montgomery station. A good meal for once!
I ordered the Asian chicken salad. It was great after I picked off all of the won ton crisps, there were hundreds.
2 point deduction because of their prices- Yikes!!! It is a real treat to eat here , since it's $8-$10 for almost everything on the menu. They need to have more meal deals or something more economical. Otherwise, it'll continue to be Subway sandwich of the day for me.
Nothing makes me happier on a cold San Francisco night than Boudin's, specifically this location. I came in here the other night to get my standard tomato soup bread bowl and it made my night. Not only did I join the Free Frequent Buyer's Card (I get a free 1-lb. sourdough loaf if I make a purchase here monthly for the next 13 months, not bad), the staff here was also very friendly. One of the bussers/women who brings your food to your table brightened my night up. She was prompt, had personality, and even brought another table near me more sourdough bread and butter (she asked me as well but I told her I was ok) - I think that is way above and beyond her job duty! Also, free bread, how can you go wrong?
The only reason I took 1 star off is this location is in FiDi which means its closes by 7pm and isn't open on the weekends. I would still rather deal with these hours than go over to the touristy location at Pier 39, no thanks.
A good place to go to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city without running into a bunch of tourists.
Usually quiet inside where you can relax while waiting for friends to come to the city.
Bart is right there (Mongomery Station) so you can quickly escape as well.
The food is decent, but this is the kind of place you just get something so you can use as a mini-office, waiting room, meeting place, etc.
OMG...this has got to be one of my favorite sandwich shops!!!!
I've eaten here before but after yesterday I decided I need to leave a review.
Normally I order the Turkey and avocado sandwich lunch box which comes on a little crossaint w/chips and a cookie. But since I'm a new found Vegetarian yesterday I decided to order a veggie sandwich which came w/lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, red peppers, cucumbers, and mozzerella cheese. IT WAS TO DIE FOR!!!!!!!!!! Literally I bit my tongue because it was sooo good.
I normally don't eat the chips or cookies because I'm trying to watch my weight and really I don't need it because I'm basically full and content after the sandwich and a drink.
You definitely have to try it.
They have the best bread!!!!
Unfortunately I don't eat clam chowder which seems to be the crowd favorite.
Just got lunch from there. I ordered a small salad and a soup. The food was crap. The salad was worse than what you would expect from a food stand and the portion was extremely small. The soup was small and way overpriced.
In a nutshell, don't go there unless you want to pay a premium for nothing! Avoid this place at all costs!
I'm starting to realize that I eat a turkey sandwich nearly every single day, so it's no surprise to me that when I went to the Boudin Cafe this afternoon, I naturally ordered the turkey sandwich with havarti. It's normally made on a sourdough roll, however since I don't like biting with my front teeth, I can't bite through the rolls, as delicious as they are :(. They let me substitute by getting it on sliced sourdough, which is still so wonderful!
I love that their turkey is actual cooked and shredded turkey, piled high with lettuce, tomatoes, mayo and havarti cheese. What a good sandwich!
Their Organic French Roast Dark Coffee is a perfect match with a sandwich too. Piping hot, and very flavourful.
Upon ordering, you give them your name and go wait in the cue to have your food made. While I was giving my order, an employee there was cutting up pieces of brownies to handout on the street, and offered me one (delicious!), and as I left she was outside and said "Thank you Angela!" - it cought me by surprise, but nice that their employees take a second to listen and pay attention to their customers.
I don't often venture down here to enjoy a really great soup from Boudin's often, but of the few times I have it's been very enjoyable! Today I just needed somewhere fast as I had left late for lunch, and a co-worker was heading down that way so I thought I'd join him. As I mentioned, I rarely hit this locale, so I thought it was a good lunch spot I haven't visited in ages.
The only time I ate in here, I liked the small, cozy, almost old time feel of the restaurant. I don't recall service being good or bad as I was too busy socializing, but today as I ordered it did take awhile for them to assemble my chili in a bread bowl. I'm pretty sure they didn't make the chili or the bread bowl fresh, but it seemed that today they needed two people to make one sandwich, so maybe it was just an off day.
Their soups are pretty good, very hearty, and their chili has a nice fullness and good flavor. It isn't very spicy, but it's filling, especially when you can eat the bowl. The bowl is very sourdoughy but with the chili the sourness isn't as obvious, and it's light enough that it goes well together. I'm not one to eat the entire bowl, as the only time I did it it made me sick, but really, often times the outside gets touched just a little too much for my tastes.
Overall, I find this place friendly, not terribly cheap but decent, with great interior and a decent menu selection. Overall though, I'm not generally gushing about this place, but if I were starving or passing by there's a good chance I may eat here again.
Tuesday we stopped here for lunch, because jay loves this place. I'd been to the one in macys before, but was told this was better. Well, we did get to sit outside on a nice day, so that was better. I had a spring salad and tomato soup bread bowl combo. The salad had too much dressing, but that was probably my fault for not asking for it on the side. The soup was ok. When the waiter brought our food out, they mistakenly put it in a non edible bowl instead of the bread bowl, but he did fix it, so it was fine. J liked his fine, and picky eater jay loved his, so great. I found it just ok and there are a bunch of places I'd rather eat, so I'll try not to eat here again, in favor of something more tasty. Ps, in case you've never been here, you order at the counter then take a # and they bring you your food.
Love coming here for lunch. The sandwiches are always great and you can never go wrong with soup in a fresh bread-bowl.
I make a stop here on every trip to San Francisco.
I HATE THIS LOCATION.
This location is conveniently located across the street from my office. I used to go here to order food for work luncheons, but NEVER MORE. I love Boudin... don't get me wrong; their food is delicious, but the SERVICE SUCKS. I don't know why they always have NEW workers that ALWAYS don't know what the F they are doing. I have yet to order something that came out right. Stupid me for keep trying to give them a chance, but the last 6 order's I've had on separate occasions were WRONG) How hard is it to put the right things into a bag? REALLY HOW HARD IS IT?!
If not for their great tasting food I'd totally boycott Boudin, but WTF give me MY order.
Decided to try this place out this morning for breakfast on a recommendation from my friend and I must say the food was really good and the service was fast. I enjoyed the breakfast so much that I decided to take my wife there for lunch and she loved it. The best part about this place is the service. Everyone is so cool and they really make you feel welcome. Highly recommended.
I've been going here for the past few months, and have enjoyed every experience of it. The cashier has always been nice, and the food is fast and consistent. I've been doing their customer surveys that they advertise about on their receipts, which also entitles you to $3 off your next visit, which is great! Their chicken sandwiches are great -- fresh, filled with grapes, chicken.. yumm! Their clam chowder in a bread bowl and chili are both good too! Four stars for that!
However, the last time I went here, the cashier was really unfriendly. He was quiet, didn't smile, or greet me very well. When I presented him with a coupon, he didn't seem very happy to take it. When he handed over the receipts, he crumbled up the non-credit card receipt copy and threw it away in a careless manner, not even asking if I wanted it. Usually, they hand me both normal receipt, and credit card receipt. He just threw it away without asking. Pretty rude dismeanor overall. I don't know if this cashier was having a bad day, but based on this experience... I really wouldn't want to come back. Ironically, the one time I had a bad service experience, is the only time I haven't been given the opportunity to complete a survey :P
After all, food is only part of the whole experience. The other part is service.
I don't eat lunch out all that often, but every time I go to boudin I am very satisfied.
Sitting on the front patio is great for people watching!
The service is outstanding! The bussers and food runners are friendly and extremely accomodating.
And on top of all that, the food does not disappoint. Good portions, good options, and reasonable prices.
They've been slipping lately, both on quality and service. I think they changed the recipe of their tomato soup too, and it has not done it any favors.
Also, the more I eat here the more bothered I become with the fact that they don't have cups of soup to correspond to bowls of soup. So I can get a half sandwich and a bowl of soup, but I can't get a whole sandwich and a cup of soup. I'm not sure why that is, but lately it's just seemed really obnoxious, since more often then not I want more sandwich than soup.
It's still A-OK, but it's slipping from my affections.

I'm a big fan. It's in a great historic looking building with upstairs tables. It's reasonably… Read more »
I'm ashamed of myself for not having a grip over my bread cravings. I'm not a woman who denies herself the simple joys in life-a late night snack here, a (5 lbs.) bowl of cherries there but for some reason, even if I'm stuffed to the gills, I cannot say no to wheat based, floured and baked products.
That's where the lure of Boudin Sourdough comes from. As a young child, we had a Boudin in the large outdoor shopping center that could have been the cousin of the Westfield Shopping Center on Market. Their essence of sourdough and the warm and inviting smell of clam chowder always made me lift my head and say, "ahhh..." Unfortunately for Boudin, they opened shop in the heart of a very devout Jewish community that wouldn't dare touch clam chowder so there went my favorite heathen treat after just one year.
Fast forward 16 years later and here I am in San Francisco, surrounded by bread, more seafood than I can handle and soups galore. What's a girl to do? I'll tell you what I do-almost once a week in fact. I order a 1/2 tuna salad sandwich on sourdough slice with deli mustard and clam chowder for $6.79. The satisfying crunch of sourdough fighting against my teeth and the hot, creamy contrast of the clam chowder makes for a great breakfast.
The line here is horrible in the peak hours of the morning. I'll pass by the store on Stockton for sanitation reasons and stand in line for a good 10 minutes to partake of their chowder and sometimes the asiago bagel toasted with cream cheese. They also have a ham and Gruyere cheese croissant, plain bagels, muffins and scones if soup is too much for you at that hour of the morning.
The service is a little slow here so don't swing by if you're in a hurry but where else would you get chowder at 7 a.m.? I'm more apt to come here than the BK's or Lefty O' Doul's at this hour anyhow and the love of bread keeps coming me back. Not even Atkins could keep me away from them.
I love the building, it's right in the middle of everything and from the outside you can seem the kitchen baking the bread. It's fun to watch and wets the appetite. The bakery sells the soups, salads, breads etc along with lots of food stuffs, nick nacks related to food. My absolute favorite thing from the cafe is the pesto chicken sandwich. Fresh bread, savory chicken breast, light but tasty pesto sauce and greenery - yum!
The upstairs restaurant was so nice, great club sanwich and has a lovely view of the ocean. My waiter and bus boy were charming and sweet, attentive and nice. The museum upstairs is cute as well and interesting to browse on your way out. You get free tickets for the museum if you eat at the restaurant upstairs.
I went there for lunch recently and had the Bavarian Ham and Swiss. Also got one of those weird bags of chips. Very good but the packaging was unique/memorable. Was a tasty lunch spot. Service was okay although seating is pretty tight.
Overall was good.
Would return again.

I guess economy must be getting worse, because even Boudin now has the frequent buyer's card! Buy 6th get 7th free for lunch and breakfast entree items.
I know it sounds a lot to pay 8 bucks for breaky here and 15 bucks for lunch, but I think without GOOD food, we can't operate normally. Breaky is like oil to the machine-- you need it first thing in the morning to get a slick start. Good lunch is critical to get you haul over until end of day. Well, dinner is important too but can vary since you don't (usually) have to go back to work afterwards...

I work close by, and go about twice per month. I also get the Walforf Chopped salad. It's really good, but sometimes not very consistent. I've had the sandwiches, but they seem small.
Also great: the $0.99 bagels!
The bus people in the back are spotty. They leave the tables dirty and they are a little weird. But they do try.
This place is great for a quick, reasonably priced lunch, especially if you have the $3 coupon!
Chili in a bread bowl with cheese and onions. Quite good.
Spring salad. meh. Too many dried cranberries but otherwise o.k.
water.
i'm satisfied. quick service.
I ordered a salad at Boudin and it was pretty good - a Chinese chicken salad. The good thing was that it was a very light salad - no fried noodles, just veggies, chicken and a vinaigrette. While the salad originally came with some sort of a sourdough breadstick, I asked for their Walnut Bread, which was actually pretty good - not sweet, but had a good, earthy and a subtle nutty taste to it. I didn't leave full - the salad was a decent portion, but not huge.
If you're a dude, and a you have a big appetite, have a salad and then maybe something else to go along with it - it won't keep you full for very long.
The definition of average. Came here for dinner one night and ordered a ham and cheese. It tasted... well.... average. It was "A-OK." Hey, 3 stars is nothing to be ashamed of. Come here with low expectations and you should be satisfied.
One of my favorite places to have lunch.
This place is cool for two reasons. Lunch specials and an AMAZING staff! I ordered a combo today for lunch, soup (chili) and the spring salad. Mind you, I changed my mind like 5 times and the guy taking my order laughed it off. I got a huge piece of sourdough bread that breaks my diet but oh well, it was GREAT! The service was amazing though. I ate outside with two friends and the guy that worked there actually cleaned up after us! Hows about that!
I have to go back to try their desserts!
This is my second time having clam chowder at Boudin. :D
I LOVE their Sourdough Bread Bowl! It's perfect when soaked in Clam Chowder! They have other types of soup, but I wouldn't order anything but the Clam Chowder here.
They have a restaurant upstairs and a Cafe downstairs. They both serve Clam Chowder in Sourdough bread bowl. The first time I came to Boudin, we sat upstairs at the restaurant. The only difference is you get a salad on the side if you eat at the restaurant and it's more expensive. I rather eat at the Cafe downstairs. It's quicker, cheaper and I don't care much about the salad :P
4.5 stars!
Imagine to my surprise walking up to a restaurant called "Boudin" and finding that it in fact doesn't serve Cajun fare. What's this Texas gal who's craving crawfish to do?!
My lunch group of fellow Yelp employees -- the sales team! -- and I trekked around the city looking for a relaxing, filling and outdoorsy place to grub, and Boudin fit our requests to a T. Ordering up at the register, I snagged a beefy sammich. Not a fan of their website because it's not allowing me to easily find their menu so that I can let you fine folks know what I ate--since you all care so much.
Service was super friendly, the front patio people watching the freaks along Market was interesting and the food came out in record time. I recommend going around noon. Surprisingly, the lunch rush hits around 1 pm, which noticed again happen today when I was at the next door cafe, McDonald's.
So i work around here and one day i decided to try it out because i was sick of eating McDonald witch is next door to them. The staff is always friendly and the service is fast. within 5mins I would get my food. It is good place to eat if you are in a rush and need a quick sit-down place to eat.
I usually order the combo because i think it give you the best deal, around $7 for a half sandwich/ or soup/or salad. I always get the pesto roast beef and the clam chowder!!!
Soooo... i am the #1 fan of Gregor G. I write him fanmail. I read all his reviews and I have a life sized poster of him in my room. So you can only imagine how nervous i was when he actually said YES to my lunch invite. It was almost like a date. Upon his arrival he handed me a gift. Yes, gentlemen, he gave me a pamphlet titled SCIENTOLOGY: THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THOUGHT. I almost dropped my underwear after that. After ordering a soup and salad, both of us headed up the stairs where there was additional tables.
The food came in a very timely manner and really hit the spot especially since i was cold. I found everything to be good but not great or special. There wasn't really a server either but the guy that gave us our food was super nice and actually got water for us even though it's self serve. The place was quite busy and a little louder than i'd prefer but what can ya do?
In the end, we had a great time and somehow i was able to refrain myself from asking him to sign my chest.
As a San Francisco native, I always bring my out of town guests here to try the best local sourdough bread and clam chowder. I was impressed with the service at this particular Boudin's - helpers walking around handing out napkins and even refilling water at a place that's really a self-service type dining experience.
I usually order the half and half with the turkey avocado on sliced sourdough and the clam chowder (got to order a separate dinner roll - trust me, the sourdough dipped in the clam chowder is AMAZING, but the bread bowl is usually too much for me)
I like the clam chowder here. This place is pretty pricey for some chowder, but it's good.
The egg salad sandwich I had there was pretty good too.
A must for tourists I think, I don't mind eating there once in a while.
They have a great selection breakfast pizza!
I ordered the ham, tomato & egg pizza this morning and it is so huge that just 1/4 of it is enough for breakfast.
Of course, I ate two slices though :)
Even w/ my appetite, I couldn't finish the whole thing. This is great because now I have lunch too! This is a great discovery for my budget!
