Review Highlights
My mouth starts watering as I wait in line. The selection of pizza here is amazing. Remings of one of my favorite haunts back in Florida (Leonardo's by the Slice).
Service is fast, friendly and always correct in placing orders.
The thick crust style pizzas are amazing, and there is great selection to choose from.
I had a salad there once, and was dissapointed in the size for what you pay. I would stick with them for pizza. I have a friend who loves their meatball subs, but I can't speak for the subs.
It was Sunday, a few hours post-brunch. I really needed a little something to tide me over til dinner, and I suddenly got a craving for a Sicilian slice. But where could I acquire such a slice? While roaming around the Boylston St/Newbury St areas, the light went off and I remembered the sign: BOSTONE. A quick Yelp search on the iPhone confirmed that they indeed offered Sicilian slices. And away we went.
We walked in to see a ridiculously vast offering of different Sicilian slices. There were about 15 different types on display behind the glass, but then there were even more on the counter behind that. I chose a mushroom slice; the boy went for artichoke. We also grabbed a bottle of sparkling water to split. It all cost about $9. We sat down, shared some of the water, and awaited our heating slices.
When they came, they looked perfect. And then I took a bite of my slice, and oh, perfect it was. The crust was crunchy and buttery, and the middle was doughy and delicious. It was a perfect balance in that regard, and also when it came to the cheese, sauce, and toppings. That thing was genius. Stopping into Bostone for a slice was my best idea in a long time. So I don't mind using my 300th review for it.
Bostone is pretty awesome. I'm a huge fan of the Sicilian-style pizza. They sell both by the slice and by the pie. The food is fast, and it's great for sit-down (two TV's showing sporting events, and the staff's pretty savvy about what major sporting events are on) and for carry-out as well. The prices are great and the Newbury location is fantastic.
Bostone is a double whammy for students who go to a school which gets the Boston/Cambridge-area coupon books, since they always put a buy-one-get-one-free sicilian pizza slice coupon in there.
My favorite week-day lunch place on Newbury St - I adore the Sicilian Pizzas, especially the BBQ chicken. I've also had the Chicken Parm Sub which was hot and fresh but average in taste, still probably better than most in the area. Gets a little crowded in the mid-day rush so be prepared to wait for a table.
I usually rely on Upper Crust for my pizza fix but was recommended Bostone Pizza by a work colleague. I was amazed at how delicious the Sicilian pizza was. The service is very friendly although at lunch time it can be a little slow and crowded. However, the food is amazing.
This one was a little disappointing---the words "Sicilian-style pizza" just SOUNDS like it should be really delicious. But no....the bread is too thick and doughy and the cheese is a little bland. They also serve NY style pizza, but I didn't try it since their specialty was Sicilian style.
I was so dissatisfied after trying Bostone, I went across the street to Upper Crust to get my pizza fix.
Ah yes, review #100. Thank you. Thank you. What better way to celebrate than with a PIZZA review!! =D
Major craving for pizza on my east coast business trip. Walking distance solutions only need apply.
Buddy and I were the first ones there when they opened @ noon. They had several samples of Sicilian square pizza and some regular round pies. I scored a slice of pepperoni Sicilian and a slice of cheese.
Sicilian pie: the crust was crispy and buttery. Right amount of cheese and good pepperoni
Cheese pie: thin crust, good. lots of cheese, good. big slice, good. it was mighty tasty.
We also tried their wings, which sucked. Of course i have a preference for fried wings, rather than baked. The quality was lacking on these dudes. Sort of rubbery, only partially covered in bbq or buffalo sauce. Disappointing.
Despite the wing quandary, the pizza was way satisfactory. So happy we checked it out - I was craving me some east coast pie.
I have mixed feelings about this place. It definitely has the potential of 5 stars. But for now, Id give it 3.5.
They have pizzas, subs, pastas, salads and a few appetizers. I've only been there once and we had some pizza and wings. Tomato bazil pizza was good. Not too greasy, but greasy enough to satisfy the most.
Wings were meh. I didnt particularly care for them. Just put on enough sauce to cover up the taste. The sauce is good.
They also had perrier water. Fancy, for a pizza place, but hey they are on Newberry. Also, the prices were just a little jacked up, but I guess the rent is high here....
The place is kinda cute, bathrooms are clean and staff is friendly.
Ill be back, dont disappoint me Bostone!!
I fear I can but consider the Sicilian pizza at Bostone 'serviceable'. The texture of the pizza is very light an airy, as opposed to the compactness of the slices at Pizzapalooza or Umberto's, which is wonderful. However, it does not particularly blow me away in terms of flavor. About a year ago, I swung by and grabbed a slice of cheese to try and the sauce was light, and a bit too delicate to impart much flavor, the cheese not particularly flavorful on its own, feeling more like an adhesive for the ingredients. Today, I had a slice of artichoke pizza, which I had the same sensation. It felt like I was having artichoke bread. Not a particularly bad sensation, but it doesn't taste like pizza to me. Perhaps I am too jaded by Umberto's caramelizing the cheese to a rich brown, but the cheese is just not brought out, like an afterthought, and the sauce was a little... tart for me rather than sweet, the tartness coming out in the aftertaste. Ah, now I remember... that tart sauce taste is reminiscent... of a slice of Ellio's frozen pizza growing up. Le sigh. I wish I could remember the names of the particular places I've had flavorful Sicilian pizzas, a place in Hadley, and another in Providence at different events (rather than going to the restaurant itself). Bostone's is great in texture, but the sauce and cheese just do not do it for me. The amount of artichoke was fine, though it was a little overdone compared to the flavorful and lightly done artichoke pizzas at Sweet Tomatoes (though that is Neapolitan).
As for the service and the appearance of the place, it's fine. They heated up my slice and it was mostly hot with a few cold spots (but there were only 3 slices of the artichoke left... I should have known better), the facilities clean and the variety of slice display venerable, but... that sauce and cheese just gets stuck in my mind.
I bought a qponus offer and was excited to have 15 dollars of food for 5 dollars. However, while the service was very friendly and the "traditional" cheese pizza we ordered was fast, it just wasn't that good. It was a little bit too crunchy for my liking, very greasy, the sauce wasn't very flavorful.... it was fine just... Mindnumingly average. Definitely not bad but I think there is better pizza around.
As a native Jerseyan I take pizza very seriously. As many of you (should) know, pizza in the New York/New Jersey area is far superior to much of what is available in New England. Don't believe me? Visit my hometown sometime. I'll show you the ropes.
ANYWAY- I attempted to eat pizza in Boston many times after moving up here nearly 6 years ago. After a while I just gave up. Until I was introduced to Bostone.
Bostone's Sicilian slices are delicious. There are a variety of toppings to chose from every day and everything tastes super fresh. The crust is crispy but also doughy, the way Sicilian should be. I haven't had a traditional round pie from Bostone but I highly recommend the Sicilian.
Bostone catered our office lunch today... Meh, this has to be about the worst pizza I've had in a long time. The crust was so tough trying to separate a slice with a plastic knife was almost mission impossible. The crust tasted more like bread dough than pizza dough. I also thought the tomato sauce was way too acidic. Nothing stood out in terms of various toppings. I think we'll stick with Bertucci's.
This is definitely the best pizza I have had so far in Boston. The Sicilian and round pizzas are both to die for. The cheese bread is also fantastic - which I find often disappointing at other pizza places.
The delivery area is pretty small, but their takeout service is quick and the staff is friendly.
Fast in and out service, with great food at a decent price for lunch and newbury street. definitely recommend! Definitely the kind of pizza that you would expect in the northeast!
My order didn't arrive for 1 hour, 40 minutes. Minus 4 stars.
Driver was apologetic and logical, and the pizza was pretty darn good. Not great, but pretty darn good. Plus one star.
Email complaint that I sent resulted in a polite and fast response. Plus one star with plus one star pending the result of my next experience with them.
I really like this place.
The good. The Sicilian slices are some of the best I have had in Boston. The prices are rather reasonable. Moreover, there are free refills on the fountain drinks. It's a great place to duck into for a quick slice & drink.
The bad. The regular slices (non-Sicilian) are disappointing. They do not move many of them so the regular pizzas tend to sit out there. If you do not want a Sicilian slice I would suggest that you go across the street to Upper Crust. Their delivery service is not what it could be. The online delivery page does not give you many options vis a vis pizza toppings.
Conclusion. Great place. I love their Sicilian slices. $5.25 for a premium slice and drink seems fair.
The owner of Bostone Pizza, Caryn, contacted me about my review and expressed her concern over my experience. She was very considerate and helpful. I explained to her what my boy and I saw concerning one of the employees and that it upset us. She determined that what we saw was the transfer of vegetables that were going to be cooked, which under the health code does not require the use of gloves. They do use gloves for ready to eat food that is not cooked. However, Bostone has decided that they will now have the staff wear gloves in all instances.
I was impressed that Caryn took the time to contact me based on my review and that the business will implement the change. Yay! Yelp works!
I will definitely be returning to Bostone to try out the pizza! I can't resist.
Bostone Pizza deserves the bump up to four stars because I am a fan of the customer service and ownership!
Also, my B rad enjoyed the food. :)

Sicilian mushroom was tasty. Look forward to going back.
This place would be way better if I hadn't paid 3.75 for a small slice of Sicilian with two toppings. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but not 3.75 a slice good. The regular slices are much better and cheaper, so If I go back and feel like ingesting a wheat product again, Ill probably get one of those.
Also, in keeping with their "charge too much for not enough" The salad I had there was tasty, but small.
Overall, I give this place a meh. I'll go back if I'm in the area, with some friends, and just can't decide where else to go, but I won't be venturing back on my own any time soon.
I like Boston and I like Pizza. I also mispronounce Boston and I can't spell... Bostone works for me.
$3 and a quarter for a slice isn't cheap, try to find their lovely 1 + 1 coupons.
Tomatoe basil is my cup of tea :)
I'll always miss Angelo, the original proprietor of this place when it was known as 'Newbury Pizza' for the last 2 decades, so it was with a lot of resistance that I finally made the trek over here after new management took over last year... (and the fact that Upper Crust across the street's cheese slices just don't cut it anymore for real pizza lovers).
Unfortunately, the regular cheese slices don't hold a torch up to the bar that Angelo held. I really didn't like it that much, and rate it a 3. However, the Sicilian slices, which are prominantly displayed, are a step up. They are actually pretty good, and depending on what kind you get, rate about 3.5-4.
The subs are not bad. The cheese-steaks are not the chopped steak style you see in most places, but more of 'steak'um' style, which are larger pieces of thinly sliced steak, which are a throw-back to the ones I had in highschool, so I had a bias on eating these, and give it 4 stars.
Why do I rate it 4 stars overall? I love the service and the new decor. Unfortunately Angelo left the place a little too 'old school' for Newbury Street (would have looked fine in the North End), but this renovated place is super clean, comfortable, and the owners are just fabulous. They even kept the old original signs as part of the decor, which means they respect tradition, and that alone was good enough for me to decide become a regular again.
Great value, they deliver in the neighborhood, and while they close at 9pm daily (unfortunately), they do push it to 10pm during the summer.
Now... if they can just get their regular cheese slices up to par, I'd give them 4.5-5.....
I am still not super impressed but I had a slightly better experience with them recently. The delivery person was on time and friendly. I also tried their Mediterranean pizza with tomatoes and feta which was much, much better than the awful cheese I had had previously. I also tried one of their Greek salads which was pretty decent with a good portion of feta on it.

Yum! I just had a really good Italian sub. The pizza looked delicious too. I'll have to try it next time. I was also happy to see that they have Sicilian pizza. A rare find. Great little inexpensive lunch spot! I would call ahead if you are in a rush though. They are very busy at lunch time.
The only slices on display were Sicilian, and I didn't bother to look at a menu, so I just ordered a slice of Sicilian pizza with spinach. The place was not very busy, so the staff were chatting and eating pizza. Right after I ordered I turned away to grab a stool and wait, so I didn't see them put my slice in the oven. Waited for a minute or two, when the woman who took my order looked over at me, then grabbed a spinach slice from the display and put it in my oven. Oops.
None of that is anything to get excited over. Neither is the pizza.
Bostone Pizza reminds me a little bit of Antonio's in Amherst. This is not because of its quality, but rather the appearance of the Sicilian slice. The square pizza piece is always a good option, particularly if you really like doughy-related options.
That being said, what makes Antonio's a 5-star late night option is its variety. Yes, you can get the standards at Bostone, but variety is key, and I'm not seeing any honey mustard chicken there (or weird, exciting possibilities).
At the same time, it's still decent pizza, and the sicilian is a good non-greasy option as well in comparison to its standard thin crust bretheren. And I appreciate that I could carry the pizza home relatively easily in a box. So it's still good pizza. But it has the potential to be more with a bit of exciting variety.
This spot is a solid 4 stars. The sicilian slices are heavy duty! These guys spent some serious time in the lab to perfect their pizza. Just enough crunch, and consistency in every slice so much so that I find myself here almost at least once a week if not more. On top of that the staff is always very cool and laid back. I just wish you could get 2 slices and a coke for a 5 spot but those days are long gone...
I generally don't take the time to review places like I should but I've got to put in a good word for Bostone. Anytime I'm on Newbury st, this is the place to go.
Fantastic pizza. Seriously excellent. And I can be pretty picky about pizzza too. One slice is the size of two slices, that's how big they are. The workers are always so friendly and nice, not to mention fast.
Throw in the fact that their prices are so low and you have the perfect pizza place. If I lived closer, I'd be there every week.
Another one of those finds that makes Yelp on my iPhone my best friend. Not too far away is the highly-overrated Upper Crust. But w/ my Yelp app on the iPhone, thanks to your suggestions, I went here instead. Good stuff. I wish I could give it 4-1/2 stars. It was better than 4 but not quite 5. Decent prices considering they're on Newbury Street. Great flavor pizza. Needs more sauce, but I had two pieces - pepperoni and their daily special - chicken/bacon/ranch. Definitely stick with the traditional. The special was ok though. Not much seating, but again, it's Newbury St, so they probably pay a fortune for the small space they have.
Bostone Pizza... now is it pronounced Boss-tone Pizza, Bostoney Pizza, Bostoneah Pizza or Bos-Stone Pizza? I thought it would be the latter... try and evoke stone-baked pizza in the name (although they don't use stone ovens) and yet cunningly also mention Boston in the name, in case we forget where we are. But fortunately it turns out the first pronunciation is right.... Boss-tone. And I like that, it reminds me of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and times gone past.
What I didn't quite like was the small choice of thin-crust pizza. I prefer Upper Crust opposite where I can get a much bigger range of superior thin-crusts and I can also get a beer. Sadly your store also has less room, natural light and could do with UC's funkier decor.
BUT.... I still think you deserve some good 3 star respect because Newbury St needs good places like you serving up cheap and quick eats, with newspapers and a TV in place. The rent is obviously tough so how you keep your prices so low must be some kind of magic trickery hocus-pocus. I've even heard you sell a cheaper slice now the Upper Crust.
AND you did impress me with your dedication to the 'Sicilian' slice. Seems like this is your angle - lots of different square slices. That's a good step - not my pizza-thing but a good change from the norm. If I could offer some advice for the slice perhaps, I'd say use a bit more sauce please. Mine was mighty mighty dry. But still tasty of course. Pizza usually is.
So I was working last night, and got a call from Bostone Pizza offering us a pizza on the house to promote their business. I of course said sure, as I thought it was a sweet way to maximize their business in the neighborhood. They brought it over quick, and the driver introduced himself and gave us menus and a pie. It was a Neapolitan cheese and basil pizza, topped with lots of tomatoes and it was yummy. Super fresh tasting and basil-y. I love basil!
I will definitely be ordering from there for work events, and will stop in there whenever I am craving a slice during work. It was good, and I never went into the place that was there before, so there's no pre-existing loyalty to a place that no longer exist!
04/02/07 UPDATE!
This has become my total go to spot for slices......why you ask?? The staff is really REALLY friendly, and they have amazing slices at reasonable prices. They rule and I don't go anywhere else. I went into Upper Crust the other day thinking I would grab a slice, but the slices looked sad and pathetic, and I marched my ass across the street, and was glad for it when I ate my spinach-laden slice.
i enjoy this place immensely! i used to work at zara right across the street and it was the perfect place to go during an hour break. as far as my pizza places went during breaks it was either bostone or upper crust.
location & pricing: right in the middle of newbury street (in between exeter and fairfield), closest t stop would be copley. the space itself is pretty small, but considering its on newbury in the basement of a brownstone, its really understandable. the prices on their menu is a bit pricey, but their pizza won't disappoint you.
atmosphere: their atmosphere is upbeat, the lights are bright, they have the red booths, and bar stools, a self-serve drink machine, and a bunch of plasma tvs around so you can watch the latest soccer game/tennis match/football game.
taste: their sicilian style pizza is the BEST. talk about the right amount of doughiness, the right amount of seasoning, their crust is just so good! and they have daily specials as far as their sicilian style pizza is concerned. some of the best is the traditional margherita, or spinach and chicken, and the list goes on. i have heard that their subs are fantastic as well. definitely a place to stop by if you are ever on newbury and wanting a quick lunch.
service: their service a very amiable and its hard not to crack a smile back to whoever is working the register. the reheating of the pizza does not take long but when you are waiting, the smell of your pizza reheating is delicious, and your anticipation won't disappoint you!
i would most definitely go back even though i do not work on newbury anymore. its a great place to stop by for a quick bite.
For quick, good pizza on Newbury, Bostone is second to none. I happen to live only only a block away, which means I've been going there a lot. Every time their pizza is delicious and fresh, and the choice between sicilian and neopolitan style is absolutely fantastic.
I'm not giving in five stars because one fairly minor reason. It tends to be fairly slow for a non sit-down establishment. Obviously, they give some good pizza so you shouldn't care, but there has got to be some way to optimize their cooking process. This is especially true if you order a whole pie and not just a couple slices.
Also, their pizza tends be a little softer in the crust than your regular run of the mill pizza which may or may not bother some people.
But other than those minor quibbles, Bostone is the place to be for pizza. I would personally recommend the artichoke pizza because it's just delicious (this is coming from a guy who usually gets a meat pizza).
The pizza is yumm yumm yummmy!!! Whether you're opting for classic or Sicilian, you won't go wrong. Pasta's great too.
Their steak & cheese subs, to be honest, are a little whimpy. There are better places for subs -- don't choose here.
Also, their menu is pretty limited. But the pizza is great.
Okay. Let's talk pizza.
Boston is full of dumpy little college pizza joints that serve you sloppy slices of nasty.
But NOT BOSTONE!! I went here when they First opened and ordered me a slice of Sicilian (thick crust) - and I don't even particularly Like thick crust, but there were these specials of the day just sitting right there before my eyes. Specials like, "Potato-bacon-chicken-and ranch" and some kind of meaty-supreme somethinger-other... the crust is not really thick - it's Fluffy, and buttery, and Mmmmmm! I like to cut it with a fork and knife.
And when I worked in advertising I would have them cater - and they were so awesome and accommodating. I might even say they're in my top 3 pizza-places in Boston! (Figs & Penguin Pizza are up there) Who's with me!?
4 stars for a pick up at the counter, booth seating, pizza place. Don't think you are getting anything fancier just because it's 4 stars. Good pizza, reminds me of pizza hut but better and not as oily. Can't compare to upper crust because it's just a different kind of pizza. Good place to sop by if you are shopping around newbury and don't feel like sitting down to a super-expensive meal but would also like something warm to fill you up.
Great New York style slices, and good squares too! A great addition to the pathetic Boston pizza scene. Would not be laughed out of Brooklyn.
Update: Bostone has heeded the feedback and is now serving really big slices. 1/6th of a pie instead of 1/8th.
Really, this place puts upper crust to shame. GO NOW!
Halleluia hooray! After 7 years of making a mess of my kitchen and muscling together good thick dough, I no longer have to labor to eat good pizza in Boston.
Approach Bostone's trendy facade and think "oh no, perhaps it IS a corporate pizza place replacing the old Newbury Pizza" but then see the prices and smiles and good old booths. Oh, did I mention the pizza? Big chunky square slices--you can hear the angels sing--and so many choices by the slice. Veggie, 'roni, 'shroom, artichokes, Hawaiian... They beckon you. How are they fresh and yet so delightfully on hand? Who cares.
They have skinny crust options for those who don't know better, and will make any pie (pizza pie, duh) to order. Salads are satisfying and colorful. Oh, and shhh, we asked if we could bust out the bottle of wine we'd brought and since I don't know if it's actually allowed I'll just let you guess whether we enjoyed our lucious red or not.
Clean, bright, and the people are very friendly. I went in there the day they re-opened looking for Newbury St. Pizza. Instead, I walked out with a free sample of doughy pizza fresh out of the oven and an Italian sub that was so tasty.
They even asked me if I wanted cheese on my sub, which I adore them for since I don't like cheese in general.
It is a little expensive, but I chalk that up to the location of the store.
Definately going back, especially since its one of the few places on Newbury that you can get an Italian sub.
Okay, so I haven't left a review in a long time for Bostone Pizza, but honestly I just had the best Sicilian pizza EVER in the past two years from Bostone. It was what we like, half double cheese and half pep and mushroom. When I say this was the MOST PERFECT PIZZA POSSIBLE... My boyfriend and I literally ate all but two slices. And if you have ordered Sicilian from Bostone, you know that we ate enough for four. I am still smelling the last slices in our kitchen and have a feeling they won't last through the evening.
As for Caryn, she is wonderful as always and really cares about the food that is put out and her customers. Yes, I do judge quality on the love and passion the owner puts into the restaurant- and she puts SOO MUCH into it.
On the side note, and this is as honest as I get. Whenever others I know go to the place across the street- I just don't understand. I tell them about Bostone, and they just don't go back to "lower-crust" Why? If you are looking for DELICIOUS PIZZA Bostone makes it perfect.
The Sicilian pizza is great. It's nice to have something different as far as pizza goes (even if it is sort of a novelty). The slices aren't cheap here but honestly it seems pretty well worth it. The decor is upscale pizza place (neighborhood appropriate of course). I think they do a pretty great job with what they've got. Give it a shot, just expect to pay about a dollar more per slice than you thought you'd be willing to.
