*&^%!
I should have read the reviews here! It's been a few years since I've been to Boston VW, and I vaguely remember the experience being good - mainly the hours and the shuttle. Those were still fine, but the $109 diagnostic fee is simply wrong and not consistent with "corporate". Also did not appreciate the unnecessarily snarky attitude as I'm forking over the cash. We'll see if the repairs hold past a week. Ah, dealers. Did not like Wellesley VW either. Anyone know a good independent VW mechanic out there?
I found myself in the same situation I did 3 years ago, and was forced to have my VW towed to Boston VW. I was SHOCKED when they called me and told me that I needed new spark plugs, because a. That's what they told me the last time I brought my car in 3 years ago and it turned out that wasn't the problem at all and b. I had just had the plugs replaced 3 months ago. I told them this and he said, "well maybe they sold you used plugs...". He then told me that if I didn't get the plugs replaced that my car would "run like crap." Hmmm, that sounds suspicious. Was that a threat or a promise?
The nonrefundable $105 diagnosis fee is ridiculous as is the $100+ labor charge. I realize you have to pay for the new digs, but come on. And Kudos for giving yourself a 5 star review here on Yelp, stay classy. The funniest part about the whole visit was the ending. I pull onto North Beacon and the car begins to shudder and the check engine light starts flashing. I immediately pulled over and it stopped...maybe the car was just shaking off the bad vibes?
They also made a big deal about how they were going to wash and vacuum my car, because "that's just what we do here." Surprise, the car wasn't washed or vacuumed when I got there. I don't really care, and they gave me a "complementary wash and vacuum" card, but don't make a big deal out of something you don't really intend on doing. I seriously doubt I'll be taken seriously if I go back in for my rain-check.
Needless to say, I'll be paying the extra $$ to have my car towed to my regular guy and I'll never be buying a VW again.

They get the extra star for the late night hours. Typical dealer (or how I've always found dealers… Read more »
I wouldn't even give them 1 star if that were possible.
The service guy I spoke to when I had a window issue was a total jerk. He wouldn't even hear me out about what happened when it's a known fact that 2000 Golfs and GTI's had window issues (they fall in!!). Then he has the nerve to say a) it was my fault the window broke and b) "Well you're gonna give me $105 to look at it..."
I'm not gonna give you sh*t, you jerk!!!!
My wife and I recently bought our first Volkswagen Rabbit here and we got a great deal on it. The sales person that we had help us name was Matt D and he went out of his way to get us the vehicle we wanted. After the first week of having the Rabbit, one of the seats was having some issues with the seat sliding back and forth. We brought it into service, they fixed it and explained exactly what had gone wrong.
I had no issues and thought everyone was quite professional, will be using them again.
More details to come.
This place is EVIL. I hope that there is a special place in hell for all shady mechanics and dealers to go to.
Well my VW check engine light went on the other day and my car started to run on low power, so I got really scared and took it to the first place that I could get an appointment that was close to public transportation so I could go home in case it was gonna take a while.
Besides telling me what was wrong with the car they found 5 other things wrong with it.
Then telling me that they charge 102 an hour for repairs. So I go home cause they don't even have one of the parts I need and call a friend who works in a shop out of state, to look up part prices.
Those jerks were telling me that a part that really cost $80 was $120. and so on.
telling me i need things like e brake cables. which i never even use them.
I'm a girl but I'm not stupid, once I knew that my car wasn't gonna blow up right away so I called some local places and got some quotes which were way better then how they were trying to scam me.
evil evil people.
Boston VW was a BREATHE OF FRESH AIR! I've spent a lot of time at many different VW dealers, having owned two different VW's. After spending an inordinate amount of time fighting with the dealership at Wellesley and found them to be less than helpful (or cordial for that matter).
I went to Boston V-dub hoping they could help me. Not only did they replace all the parts necessary - they did most of it under warranty! Their hours are so convenient - they have two shifts which lets them work on cars up until midnight! I was able to drop off and pick up my car at my convenience after work! Their service department has been the nicest I've ever come across in the business and although my next car probably won't be a VW (too many electrical problems), I would certainly recommend them for their service department.
Bought a 2004 Jetta there in 2003. I paid for the plates from my trade in to be taken to the DMV. A month later I received a charge from my insurance company for the car because the dealership never turned them in. When I called the sales guy told me it was the fault of the insurance company. My contact at the insurance co was so mad, they even called to talk to the sales guy.
Eventually I set up an appointment to meet with said sales sleaze and saw him in the parking lot when I arrived. But he disappeared and I waited for over 30 minutes standing in the middle of the showroom until the manager helped me by reimbursing the charge from the insurance company. In the end I took the plates back to the DMV, even though I paid for the service. They did not even bother to reimburse me for the fee that they charged me and did not follow through on, only the insurance cost.
Also, a month or so after getting the car and doing the trade in, my mom (whose name was on the slip o' ownership when I had it) got a call from someone yelling about lemon laws because something went wrong with the car they purchased (my old one I traded in). But if we traded it in, don't ya think that VW Boston should have their name on the pink slip as last owners, not us...we did not sell it, they did. And quite honestly, that leads me to think they have some sort of scheme going on there.
I've never returned to even try to see what their repair service is like. If you want to go with a dealership, there are others in the greater Boston area that are better.
I dont have any detailed horror stories to tell... my car runs fine and the mechanics are perfectly nice... HOWEVER, it cost me 200 bucks just to diagnose the problem... and THEN they charged me 200 bucks to replace a glow plug on my diesel jetta (something that shouldn't cost more that 75-100 bucks), and 585 for new brake pads.. which is RIDICULOUS.
FAR TOO PRICEY!!!!
This is purely sales related, as I service my car here and the service is OK.
Do not deal with the Internet sales dept. I made an inquiry into leasing a 2007 Jetta. Was contacted over the phone and asked many questions about my trade in, which I answered honestly. The guy had the nerve to say "Wow your really got ripped off when you bought your car" which I found extremely rude.
He then gave me a price, which lowered when I told him I was going to check out Hondas as well. However, when I finally went in to get final pricing, I found that the price given was $140 more a month than originally quoted.
No thanks. I may be a woman and shopping alone, but I'm not an idiot.
I've always known that, unless your car is still under warranty, avoid taking your car to the dealer. Being new to Boston, I didn't have a set-up auto repair shop I went to when my car started acting up. In my rush to get the car to a repair shop, I took it to Boston VW.
The nice thing was that they work with Enterprise to get you a car to drive and you can drop it back off when you pick up your car. Plus, I was given until midnight to pick up my car. Bad news, I got ripped off big time and there really wasn't anything I could do about it.
They charged me $750 to replace ignition wires. I'm originally from California, where my parents still live. My Dad called the VW there and they said they would perform the service for $450 and even sent my Dad over a statement for proof they said that's how much the same service would cost at a different repair shop. After much heated debate, the guys at the repair shop wouldn't budge.
I went ahead and looked them up at the Better Business Bureau. They had about 12 complaints, 8 were for Auto Repair!!! All the other repair shops had only about 2 complaints, while the mass majority had 0. I'm never taking my car back there. I don't care how convenient their system is with Enterprise!
Well my old service center in Natick was shut down I started coming here. I have been here many times, as VWs seem to have a lot of problems. Each time I've been here I have not had a problem with the customer service team and the service center.
If you make an appointment they try to get you in on time and work on your car to get you out. You have access to free wireless, cable TV, vending machines, tea/coffee machine, water. The wait isn't boring, but often at times it can be.
The service team is helpful as much as possible, but I often tend to go non-peak times which is later in the evening as to late afternoon/early evening. They sit down with you and explain what's going on, they go over the pricing, they always let you know beforehand if there is something else that you might want to get done or that needs to get done. They're pretty informative.
The prices are definitely high. I don't know why. I needed to have something replaced on my car something with my coolant, but I thought that they were ripping me off. I called around to 4 other places and it ended up being just as much, so I end up going to the dealership and it end up being cheaper than anticipated.
Overall I like this place and I"m definitely going to miss them when I move :(. Also beware VWs tend to have a lot of problems with them and they're quite pricey to fix.
I bought my 03 passat here, pretty easy going sales guy's i was able to get it for the price and payments i wanted, granted it was before Christmas so I'm sure sales were slow. I had to have a few small things done after i bought it which were just have a speaker replaced cause it was blown out but it was covered under warranty. I love the hours. now i have not had to pay for any service because I'm still under warranty but they seem to milk the work orders as far as hours go, to replace a single speaker they put down a 3 hour work order which was at 103 dollars an hour, so if your not under warranty I would be careful.
as of 6/30/08
worst service ever, I was called a liar by the kid at the desk. I have not put any antifreeze into my car the only people who have touched my car is boston vw and they tell me that I have the wrong type in and it needs to be flushed, sorry chief I'm not a single mother living in a cave. They also arent giving me any information on my extended warranty so I can bring it to another dealer and now I have vw corporate involved on my side, don't consider going here at all!!!!!!!!
You can not only drop off and pick up your car up until midnight, but they actually are doing service until then too.
When my water pump broke and my car was overheating, they fixed the car within 24 hours. (Lucky for me, this was covered under the car's factory warranty. ) They called me before they did the work and let me know ahead of time what the charges would be.
Now you could call this unnecessary upselling, but I found it worthy of 5 stars: they suggested that they do the timing belt at the same time. The labor would be free because it would be included in the cost of the water pump fix. I went for it because normally they charge $600 for a timing belt, but if I did it now they would charge for parts only: $260. And I am 2000 miles from needing the timing belt to be changed anyway.
So I appreciated their suggestion, which was unsolicited. I also found them to be pretty friendly.
Caveat: Normally, I take my car to Metric Systems in Cambridge because they are a family-owned VW shop that has reasonable prices. So I recommend Boston VW only if you are set on going to a Dealer for VW service.
I'm about fed up with Boston Volkswagen. My experience with them since my first time using them has done nothing but nose dived. My first time was amazing, it was when they were on western ave and were open till midnight, they allowed me to make a late evening appointment which was so helpful for me to so I was able to able to work and then go after work. At the time, I would have given them 5 stars.
The next time - a lever in my clutch needed to be replaced, I couldn't drive the car, the clutch had no pressure so I had to tow it there. I walk in an explain the situation and the guy tells me it can't be fixed till Friday (this was Monday afternoon) shocked I asked how this wasn't top priority and he gave me some stupid story about pregnant ladies and warranties... After calling them 3-4 times a day my car was fixed Thursday, not Friday. I would have given them 3 stars then.
Now today. I was told the last time i went i would probably need my exhaust fixed because there was a small whole in it and it may not pass inspection. Well, I opted to try to get it passed and it failed. So today, I went to have it fixed. I made my appointment 11 days ago telling the guy how i was in there 2 months ago and i opted not to get it fixed and now i need it fixed. I go in today, drop my car off and get a phone call 4 hours later with the diagnostic.... something I didn't need! After cutting the guy off and reiterating what i said earlier he goes "oh so you just came in to get it fixed? well we don't have it in stock."
What was the point of making an appointment so far in advance? Thanks so much VW Boston I have to take off yet another day from work thanks to you. Your stupid shuttle is such a joke, not everyone needs to go to Harvard sq / Cambridge. I hate you guys!
This place has broken things on my car on more than one occasion when bringing it in for warranty work. I have also been lied to multiple times by this dealer. They may have a few good techs, but unfortunately the bad ones seem to outweigh them. I posted my story on a Volkswagen message board, and was instantly blacklisted for revealing the truth about a situation. I hope that nobody goes here. For more horror stories, visit the message boards at http://vwvortex.com and do a search for Boston VW
I agree... One time my window fell into the drivers side door and they needed to open it up to retrieve. Later on the year when my side mirror got knocked off I discovered they stole most of my screws!
Since 2000, I've gone to Boston VW because it was convenient and the quality of the repair work was good. Although the new Watertown location is nice, clean, and still convenient, they've lost a loyal customer after quoting $1500 to change a timing belt. Their labor prices are crazy and they charge more hours than the work actually takes. For example, a couple years ago, they charged 7 hours of labor and let me know my car was ready 4 hours later. I asked how many people worked on the car and they said just their top mechanic. When asked how I was charged for more than 4 hours of labor, they said each repair had a VW assigned "average" amount of time to complete it. If the mechanic finished early, they still billed the "average" time to complete. Is this legal? I just called around to another VW repair place in Allston and they quoted $625 to replace the timing belt. If they do good work, I'll be sending everyone I know their way.
I wish Yelp existed back when I was dealing with Boston Volkswagen (2000-2001) so I could write all my stories.
I had my WORST car dealership/service experiences here. Every time I took my car there to get it fixed, they were breaking something else, and they were taking absolutely no responsibility.
Despite all the crap they were trying to pull on me, the thing that did it for me was that, one day, I saw the the service techs actually threaten a customer, while the poor guy was trying to explain that they broke the adjustment of his headlights while changing the battery. ... You read it right, I'm not joking, they were actually threatening him.
No wonder this place doesn't even get 3 full stars from Yelpers.
I'm from out of state and haven't had my car for very long, so of course I thought it in my best interest to go to a dealer shop. And for minor stuff, it has been okay, but after a recent experience i have to say that they do very, very sloppy work and have a horrible bedside manner. I had to bring my car in 2 days in a row because they couldn't be thorough the first time. I don't blame the technicians entirely - I feel the whole place is poorly managed and they're more concerned with quick customer turnover than doing a good job. Obviously more customers in a day means more $ in a day, I get it, but if I'm going to drop several hundred dollars to get something fixed, I'd like some quality customer service and not the feeling that I'm being lied to, jerked around, and just another work order for the day. I've found a smaller, family-owned place that costs only slightly less but I'd rather be treated like a human than a sales slip.
I've had bad experiences with these guys too. I took the car (a 1999.5 Jetta) in to have the door locks fixed. They weren't locking properly. The service manager yelled at me for only bringing in one key. I rescheduled and brought it back weeks later. Went to hand the key to the guy and he said "awh, we don't need that". Anyway, they looked at the locks and said they work fine. It still does not lock properly to this day. The second time I took it there for the engine light not turning off. They ran diagnostics and said it needed a new 02 sensor, which they replaced (costing me close to $400 -- the car had 30k miles on it at the time). While driving away from the place the engine light came back on. They're ridiculous. What's even worse is that I was fed up with the car and it's problems. So I went in to look at trading it in for a new model (I have no idea what I was thinking). The guy in the dealership said "tell you what... do you have the internet? Go home and log on and you can find the prices for the car you want. If you're interested, come back." I couldn't believe it. The dude then went back to talking to a guy in one of the offices about golfing. The place is a sick joke.
