    Sunday morning delight.

GET IN early and the crowds are nonexistent. I generally avoid working out in the basement as it is quite dingy and not well lit. It really doesn't evoke motivation in me personally, but in the interest of maximizing equipment space, it seems that BSC has forgone making their locker rooms less labyrinth-like and threw in an area it doesn't seem would make people really want to be there.

GET OUT of the basement and go to the second floor. In the mornings the light shines through the front of the building and as you soak in that Vitamin D through the windows a feeling comes over you; that's motivation! Yes, there's very little equipment, but that's why you came in early, remember? They have the essentials: free weights, cables, and mats to bust out some planking. Spin class is also upstairs.

If you have a regional membership, this is not a bad supplement location; I would not want this to be my only gym, unless I lived right next door.

Good Amenities in a Quirky Layout

This gym has most of the things I've come to expect from a BSC.  Unfortunately, the building footprint is pretty small, so the gym takes up 3 floors.  The equipment is laid out a bit strangely due to the space constraints.  It requires a lot of walking up and down the stairs to get to different items for a workout.
I can see that this would be a bit annoying, but I just tell myself that I'm adding that little bit extra to my workout by doing some stair sets.

The hours of this gym are probably the biggest issue.  They close at 6 pm on the weekends, and 8 pm Friday nights.  It's a bit early for my liking, but I suppose the amount of people using the gym in this area at those times has set the standard.

Overall, it's close to home, and my membership allows me to use the other BSCs in the area, so it evens out.

Let's just say  that for $50-ish per month, I expect more.

    Cons:
-Like another reader mentioned, the hours are unreasonable on the weekends (close at 6PM Saturday and Sunday!?) and for some reason they close a bit earlier on Thursday and Friday. It's hard enough to get to the gym as it is, so this is not helpful.
-There are always machines that are broken, often without any sign on them. Machines will stay broken for days on end. I know they get a lot of wear and tear but really, this giant corporation should be able to do better.

    Pros:
-A smaller gym means there is not too much space but the place is a little less shabby than the Watertown location
-The meat-market factor is low. One can generally workout in peace.

    A solid health club.

    Steam room.
    Sauna.
    Plenty of space.
Plenty of equipment in great condition.
    big locker room.
    No meat-heads.

Staff are a little standoffish, but that isn't always a bad thing.

There are a ton of pricing options for BSC, which tends to leave you scratching your head. I chose the single location option. For what I pay, I get everything I was expecting.

I live in NYC but have an (insanely expensive) passport membership to the BSC/NYSC family, so on a recent visit to Boston I decided to be healthy and try this place out.

The staff was really sweet and accomodating - I came with my brother, who isn't a member, and they gave him a free 1-week guest pass so we could work out together. All the equipment I used was in good condition - there are personal TVs on the treadmills and ellipticals, and mine worked on the first try (not the norm at my usual NYSC location, unfortunately).

My only complaint is that the layout is a bit confusing - the place is split up over 3 levels and things don't seem to be categorized very clearly within those levels. The locker rooms and some free weights are in the basement, but the rest of the free weights are on the second floor. Same deal with the aerobic machines - treadmills on groud floor, bikes and ellipticals on second floor.

I'm sure the people running this place had a logical reason for laying things out the way they did, but as someone who was just a one-time visitor, I was frustrated at how difficult it was to find the machines I was looking for and how I needed to go up and down the floors several times to finish my workout. Still, this is the closest BSC to my house and I can get in for free, so out of necessity, I might be back.

I just joined.  Was at the old Gold's/WOW! in Needham for 10 years, but that place slowly evaporated.

Anyways, so far BSC is pretty good.  Very clean, smells fine, lockers rooms are nice.  All the machines seem to work fine, including the cardio, they also have tv screens on each cardio machine.  People seem friendly and there are 3 floors.  At first I thought this might be a pain going up/down for different things, but actually I do not mind it, and it is good exercise too and a cool down going to a different floor. It seems like a good young professional crowd too.

I wish they had more variety of cybex and hammer strength machines though, there is only one or two for each major muscle exercise group.

All I can say is, I'm about to go elsewhere after more than a year.  The biggest reason is that the equipment is not maintained to any standard that i think is acceptable.  Many machines seem to be broken (clunking, etc.) or not calibrated properly and if you are lucky enough to get one of the few machines that does work, it would not be unusual for the TV not to work.  Of the six or so elliptical machines, three might have a problem at any given time - for months on end.  The club is unresponsive and pretty unapologetic about this.  It's not unusual for there to be no hand sanitizer - yuck!  I don't think this club provides services commensurate with the fees and even if it were really cheap, who wants to work out in a club where the equipment is often in disrepair.  : (

I joined online. First time that I went in to use the place, I had to meet with a sales person. She interrupted our meeting to a cell phone call from her kid that was NOT important. She proceeded to show me around the club and introduced me to the site manager, who was cold as ice. She did not get up from her desk to shake my hand, did not smile or say anything like, "Welcome" or "Let me know how I can help", and did not say anything when the sales person and I moved on. Then the sales person proceeded to do a very hard sales pitch on personal training. The ridiculous handout had four or five exclamation marks after the cost for each option as if it was an incredible deal...in my opinion they were not. Then that sales person said that the manager would call me the next day to set up an initial appointment with a fitness person for an eval where a fitness routine would be set up and I would be shown how to use the equipment. It NEVER happened. 5 days later that sales person called me at home rather than at work during the day to "touch base" and for me to call her back. I called back the next day and was told that she no longer worked at the club. She moved to another location. She didn't even have the professionalism to inform me in her voicemail message from the day before! So I called the manager, who was as cold on the phone as she is in person. I explained what had happened, and she replied, "And?" REALLY??!! I asked her if she thought that the sales person had done the right thing. Her response was, "Is there a learning opportunity for the sales person?  REALLY??!!! Do you THINK? I tried to contact BSC corporate management about it. They only have a link with which to send an email. There was no customer service phone number. BAD FORM! I NEVER heard back from them. I regret ever having joined BSC West Newton. In hindsight I should have known better than to take advantage of a deal on the internet. Lesson learned.
