Great organization, at least from my experience playing bball in Waltham for six seasons, and soccer in Medford for one. I realize there may be issues from time to time, but coordinating so many leagues spread across such a large metropolitan area can't be easy, and honestly, it's just a great service for those of us who still want to get our compete on a bit. It costs about 60-80 bucks for a season once you have a membership ($65 annually).

Kudos to Dan Hannon and the refs that have to put up with us whining. For the most part, it's just good fun.

This is a review specifically of the Winter Warrior Pub Crawl.

My friend and I were perhaps the first two participants to arrive at Dillon's.  We inquired of the host where the group was located and some confusion ensued as she went to get a manager assuming that my friend and I were the organizers.  We were not.  Participants began to trickle in and at the scheduled start time Dillon's was packed.  At the 1pm start time no one from the BSSC had arrived or even bothered to call Dillion's to alert them that the BSSC representatives were running late.  The BSSC crew did arrive close to 1/2 hour AFTER the scheduled event start time, which is probably a full hour after they should have already been there, set-up and ready to start taking peoples' money.

No one asked me for money and I didn't see the point in paying $15 for a wristband and a shapeless t-shirt (why do so many events insist on handing out huge, boxy  men's t-shirts even when half the participants are women?).

I ended up having a nice time and meeting some nice ladies.  I am not ruling out participating in another BSSC organized pub crawl.

Protip: ladies are best advised to quickly organize into packs to fend off the socially inept creeps.

I've been going on snowboarding trips with the BSSC for the past few years and I think it's a great group. They've consistently had great volunteers to lead both the day and weekend trips. If you are riding solo they will offer to try and pair you up with another rider/skier of your ability.
I've been to several of the out&about events and people have always been very social, friendly and non-creepy. It seems like a lot of folks on Yelp have had issues with the sports leagues which I don't have any experience with. The winter activities have always been great!

I'm going to be fair and put my bias out right up front. I love BSSC; and it might be because I have met many of my closest friends thanks to them. That said; I've participated in pretty much every different kind of activity that BSSC has to offer.

Once a week all summer long you'll find me on a kickball field, fierce at first base. Their annual Halloween party is sacred tradition for me and my friends.  Two years ago I took my first weekend trip with them, and for a number of reasons my life will never be the same, but I'm not spilling all of those beans in this review.  I've never had more fun at a Red Sox game, and neither has my dad, who accompanied be to a BSSC game this past August.

I've never been to any BSSC event, and not had a good time. Staff have always been friendly and helpful; and events, trips and leagues are well organized. It's the people who really count though, and it's the people who I've met through BSSC that make this a five star review. You all know who you are, and you know that I love you, and how.

Say what you want. BSSC is where it's at, for me and my BFFFLs.

I am a big time BSSC Fan. I've participated in everything from sports (yay kickball!), to pub crawls, to social events, to ski trips and weekend trips.

I love the yearly parties such as the Halloween Bash, the Blizzard and the Rock the Boat cruise. And the Pub Crawls are always a good time- offering different appetizers and sometimes drink specials at various bars.

Anything they offer is a great excuse to meet new people, have a few drinks and have a lot of fun.

Growing up, I always played sports but often needed to improvise with equipment. Sometimes, I had to roll up a couple of my best socks, Sunday School socks, into a ball to play soccer. Other times, I had to cut out the bottom of a milk crate to make a basketball hoop. Or use a plastic lid as a Frisbee. I've always enjoyed athletic activity, although I'm blessed with only average ability.

When I was old enough to play organized team sports (with proper equipment), I played soccer and ran track, in high school and college (track only). As a working professional, being a person who loves to challenge himself physically and mentally, I cannot bear to come home from work and simply pet the cats, my wife, then watch TV until I fall asleep.

Boston Ski and Sports Club (BSSC) is just the thing for the young and old who feel like running, jumping, twisting, and diving despite frantic pleas from husbands and wives who can't afford an early retirement. I've played soccer and volleyball with BSSC, "earning" four sprained ankles, eight stitches, one torn ligament, and countless aches, pains, and bruises.

BSSC has indoor and outdoor sports leagues, ranging from basketball to ultimate frisbee, as well as social events and weekend adventure trips. The team and individual fees are reasonable and vary for each sport, and the sports coordinators are fairly easy to reach by email or phone.

Additionally, most BSSC fields and gyms are conveniently located near a hospital, which will come in handy for those of us who refuse to believe that the blood coagulating under that big toenail on your kicking foot will miraculously dissolve with a few more goal kicks.

The Boston Ski & Sports Club is great even if the name does undermine the social aspect of it. My first BSSC-related activity was playing on a kickball team last fall. About 18 friends and I started our own (terrible) team called the Ginger Kids. The games were fun, I mean really, its like going back to elementary school. Also, since we played on Thursday nights we usually headed out afterwards. You might say we were a drinking team that played kickball. There were usually tons of other kickballers out afterwards too so it was cool to meet and hang with the people who just minutes ago were our opponents. After kickball season ended, reluctant to accept our rightful places as adults, we joined the dodgeball league. Awesome. In the winter, there is an organized trip to a mountain almost every weekend where they bundle the lift ticket and bus ride for about $65. Can't argue with that.

Like I mentioned, they also have some serious social events going on. Halloween parties, a skiing/snowboarding fashion show and party at Roxy, wine tastings, getaway weekends, etc, etc.

One of the greatest thing about the BSSC is the people who work for the organization. Beth M. (who handles the social activities), Andy G. and Mike G. (both who handle sports) are awesome. Totally friendly, fun and sociable.

BSSC is great if you are new to the area as a way to meet new people. I have "adopted" three new friends into my social group this way. If you don't become a member, at least sign up for a newsletter and get involved!

Blizzard @ Royale- what an epic failure of an event. Trays of snacks and dips left out for anyone to grab/ stick dirty hands into. All the mountains were there to hand out fliers but simply nothing else to do. Arrived at 7:45pm left at 8pm. So disappointed.
Thought it was going to be fun and worth $15 since it was being held at a club. EPIC FAIL!

Yeah, it's a bit pricey I suppose, but cheaper than my gym so I can't really complain.

I just joined a co-ed flag football league and am having a freakin' blast.  The key with BSSC is really what team you're on.  My team rocks.  We all want to win, but no one's really hard core about it and is totally supportive whether I make the catch for a first down or completely forget what the play was and just start running like mad around the field.  Everyone laughs and smiles and congratulates each other after each play... it's awesome.

Definitely grab a friend and sign up.

Was very unimpressed with the transportation provided on the weekend Ski trip to Stowe, VT.  The heater on the bus was obviously not working at all.  It was in the high 30's inside the bus.  Granted it was better than the single digit temperatures outside but the other 2 buses on the trip had heat.  The BSSC staff when confronted by others on the bus gave unsatisfactory responses as to what the problem could be, whether or not some one was working on fixing it, or even whether or not there would be heat on the ride home.  To stay warm everyone on the bus had to put on all of their clothing for skiing.

The only reason I gave them 1 star was because the cost of the trip was less than a lift ticket alone, although the ride up was completely miserable.

I was a member back when I was in the area.  Played on a couple softball leagues.

Funny thing was, when I joined, an employee that I had sorta dated noticed my membership and emailed me out of the blue.  Guess things aren't so confidential there.  That ended quickly though, because I was single and she only liked dating engaged guys :)

I went to my first BSSC event last night as a segway to becoming a member. The blizzard event was the premier 'ski' party of the city as noted in all of their marketing material - So after a $20.00 cover charge, I went in to the dozen or so booths, half of which representing dating services, hair removal, or stress management... The other half being representatives from ski resorts throughout the area. No discounts to any of the good mountains... So 30 minutes in to the 4 hour event, I had seen everything I could possibly see, twice, so I went and bought a coke and beer for myself and my guest... $7 bottle, $5 coke... Are you KIDDING?? The 'big' prizes were awarded at 1030, which I have to say I did not stay around for --- I was bored stiff.

Look, I know this is a business, but this was an absolute waste of time and money, and you can be assured that I will NEVER join this club. The weekend trips look interesting, but the prices are no different (if not more) than booking on my own.

I did get a free water bottle though...

This review is specific to Co-Ed basketball.

I've been playing coed hoops with BSSC for years. I've had to have the same argument with anyone I tell about the leagues.

    Here's how it works:

There must be at least one female player on the court for each team.

Men's baskets count as 1.  Women's baskets count as 2.

Generally, anyone who hasn't played in one of these leagues will instantly complain about the scoring differences for the women.  It seems unfair because a) it scores a woman's 12 foot jump shot twice as much as a guys layup in the post, b) it treats women like they can't play.

However, let me explain why I like these leagues, and why it works.

Most men's recreational league basketball ends up the same way.  Guards shooting from outside, then a melee going for the rebound.  Lot's of running, sure, but the half court game is ugly.  Don't even try to cut through the lane.  There is rarely any room to do anything inside.  If you are not really tall, or really athletic, or both, it's not much fun.

With the women getting 2 for each basket, the defenders absolutely cannot leave them alone on the outside.  Suddenly, the defensive players are spreading out a lot more.  Since we're all spreading out, there is now room to cut through the lane.  There is now room to let a low post player get the ball and make a move.  There are now offensive plays that you don't usually see in a men's league, like playing it inside-out.  When is the last time the big goon on your men's team actually pitched the ball back out of the post to a wide open guard?  Mid-range jump shots?

As far as treating the women like they can't play.  Bah.  A good shooting woman can dominate the game.  It's a whole different strategy.

The level of competition varies from night to night (Wed pretty good, Thu pretty sloppy), but it's always a good time and a good run.  It may not work for your average early twenties jock who can still dunk, but it is just a rec league after all.

I know you don't believe me that it works, but it's true.  It works.  It's fun.

Now, about BSSC.  Yes, they charge a little too much.  Yes, they are constantly angling for more money (shorter sessions, no playoffs, etc).  But, everyone I've dealt with has been great, and they do a overall good job.  There's a bunch of things I'd do differently, but I'm not unhappy with them.

I have played flag football with BSSC for about a year and a half now and I really enjoy it.  We have a team with them and play indoor and outdoor.  I am defintiely a fan.  I have also participated in many of the social events including, a boat cruise, mistletoe mixer, and more which have all been great.  I have met some of my closest friends through teams I have joined with BSSC and I definitely speak highly of it.

The fees are reasonable and the staff is accomodating.  It really is a great company that gives adults the opportunity to get out and play team sports and meet new people in social settings.

This is a great organization. After spending 5 years in the cultural and rec league wasteland of Rhode Island, where there is no such entity to actually organize coed fun sports leagues, it's one of the main reasons why I was happy to move back to the 617.

I've played in BSSC's flag football, softball, indoor soccer leagues and look forward to trying a few other sports. I have not been on a trip yet, but they always have tons of them. They also have tons of bar nights and events.

It's a great league if you just want a recreational beer league action and a few laughs.

Like with any rec league, you get a few meatheads or people who think the pro scouts are in the stands, but I'd say 99% of the people who participate truly "get it" and are not "that guy". You know "that guy". The type who rocks tight polyester coach's shorts, Oakley amber wraparounds, and own multiple aluminum bats that are banned in several semi-pro Central American softball leagues.

Give it a try. If you like it and sign up for more than two leagues in a year, I'd say a full membership is worth it since you pay lower league fees.

    I. Love. Floor Hockey. Thank you, BSSC, for bringing this obscure sport back into my life.

Ok, so for you hockey fanatics, floor hockey may not be an "obscure sport." But for me, any sport I haven't played since middle school counts as obscure. Now I'm out there sweating my buns off and shooting like a mad woman!  I love it!!! I play twice a week, and have more bruises and floor burns than most other ladies my age.

I also play kickball through BSSC. Floor hockey is one of the more expensive sports, due to the indoor "rink" time necessary. I pay anywhere from $80 to $100 depending on the number of people on the team. Kickball runs around $50. Both sports have different leagues depending on the level at which you play.

BSSC is very organized. The refs always show up, the equipment is always there, and they don't email you all that much. I have yet to try a trip with them, but they seem like fun and a good deal.

Sooo.. if you're looking to meet new people, stay in shape, and have fun, try BSSC. Specifically floor hockey. Or kickball. Or softball, which I hear is quite competitive.

BSSC, I'll start with soccer, 6 v 6 no goalie, I like weird concepts what can i say. This was a pretty good league, but that might be because the entire division i was in was made up of either 'Indies' which are teams made up of individual sign ups, and new teams that hadn't played in the league either. My team was decent, not the best, or worse. And over all the playing experience was enjoyable.

Volleyball. let me start by saying I don't think anyone tries harder the Laura. But you can play in 2 different leagues that are supposedly the same level, and it's like night and day. Plus moving up levels is often met by waiting list that seem to go on forever. Add in once you move up in level, you still can play in 2 different leagues that are supposedly the same level and it's like night and day (yes I did say that again, it's worth mentioning!) The levels are not actually monitored, so if you think your this level you sign up for this level and even if you go 5 and 67 during the season you can come back again and again. Supposedly if your winning percentage is below 25% two seasons running you cannot continue in that league, but I've seen 3 straight seasons of sub a 25% team never get kicked out going on it's 4th year 12th season in the league.

The players bitch about when you call them on illegal hits, and the only time most players ref is when they are playing a game calling the fouls on the other team.

I have even been a league coordinator in a few of these leagues, it's frustrating and tiring because I want the league to represent the level, but once I quit running the league the next person to come in and do the job (because you get paid about the same it cost to play) they are just collecting the paycheck and not caring.

My suggestion, if you're going to play, and you don't like the league ride the coordinate so that he quits and then take over and try to make it better if you can. Or just get out and find a better place.

Oh and don't get me started on Friday night pick up. Once was a tough night where you can get kicked off top and middle courts to a lower level. Not anymore, if you make 1 good hit, just 1 your in, let alone that you can't pass or even serve over the net, doing all 3 is apparently asking too much..... after thinking about this, I've moved my scale from 2 stars to 1, There has got to be something better out there.

I've been playing various sports in BSSC for (gulp) 8 years now.  It's a great way for aging jocks (and newbies) to get out there and play team sports.  I currently play volleyball and softball, both teams have players of all skill levels, and it's definitely a big part of my athletic/social life.  I've made a lot of friends on my various teams over the years, and even met my wife on an indie softball team many years back.

I've also played football, soccer, kickball, and dodgeball (the only BSSC sport I didn't enjoy, but that was mostly due to the other people playing).

It's definitely pricey, but I've never seen a better option and they take good care of you.  As the captain of my softball team (yes, my wife is still on the team), I have better things to do than muck around with the details: fields, schedules, umpires etc., and BSSC does a great job of handling all those details for me.  I just pay them and show up and play.  The staff is always very helpful, particularly Dan, Josh and Andy.

i didn't realize what had been missing from my life until i learned of the BSSC.  Soccer.  Football.  Futbol.  The beautiful game.  No matter how ugly it is when i play it, it's still a joy, it still totally changes my perspective on the entire week, makes everything better.  Even if i have a bad game (believe me, this happens), i still feel a million times better afterwards, having gotten up from behind the computer, out of the rolly chair, and run like hell, kicked the ball around, and had a good time.

as an added benefit, even the most disorganized teams of people who've just met eventually come together, and i've scarcely ever played with folks who were less than friendly.  sure, the organization can be a little sloppy from time to time, but i never fail to get my money's worth (it's not terribly cheap, but like others have noted, it's cheaper than a gym membership that i wouldn't use), and even when things get messed up, it's never a source of stress, always a relief from it.

simply put, i can't imagine life without it now.

I think I've done every type of activity that the BSSC offers... ski trips, weekend trips, sports, the halloween party, red sox games, booze cruise, mixers... I think that sums most of it up!
The ski trips are great.... $73 for transportation and a lift ticket. How can you go wrong? Yes, the bus leaves at 5am but don't let that stop you... you can sleep on the way up, the way back, and get in a full day on the slopes.
The sports (kickball, dodgeball, and soon street hockey for me) are well organized and a ton of fun. A great way to get your exercising and drinking on in one night as the teams normally hit up a local pub afterwards.
Red Sox games with a pre-party with apps beforehand... need I say more?
Lastly, my fave... the BeWicked Ball... BSSC's halloween throw down filled with drink specials, costume contests, and all around mayhem.

Oh - and how can I forget the people who show up for these exertions? Fun loving, good spirited, athletic, social whores! What's not to love?

BSSC is extremely overpriced!! I play in several soccer leagues around the city and the fees charged by BSSC are outrageous. It does not help that they have a full time staff. After all, this is for adult sports and recreation. Really, all I want the league to do is get the permit for the fields, hire a couple of capable referees, and coordinate cancellations in a timely and efficient manner. The fact that they try to be all things to everyone is ill-conceived. Also, their non-member fees are such BS. I need to be a member to participate?? At $65/Year!! Please. I'm sure they will tell you, as they have me, that it is to limit their insurance exposure. That can be done with a simple liability form-having me pay non-member fees of $25 per session does not solve exposure to liability. It is simply a way to make more money. I'm a business owner and I recognize the need to make money to stay afloat, but again we are talking about soccer, softball, & volleyball. You take the fun out of it when all of a sudden you are paying $1250 for 7 nights of soccer. Other organizations, such as Fun Sport & Social Group, provide a better product  for about half the price. They are more organized, get the referees to the games on time, if there are cancellations due to weather they notify you well in advance, they update scores and standings in a timely manner, and most of all, they don't rip you off. Case in point, through BSSC it costs $1175 to play 10 games at Newton's Indoor Soccer Facility. Additionally, the member, or non-member, fees associated with it (assume $25/person x 12 players = $300.) Not to mention the referee fees of $15/team each game = $150/team...Mind you each team pays that's fee so it's actually $300. Now... same facility, same number of games, no referee or member/non-member fees, and through http://fssgboston.com it costs $1000...and if you want to buy more shirts it's $6/shirt. My team bought ours several seasons ago, so we don't need to pay this fee-although I'll admit they probably smell so it wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade. Anyway, my point is BSSC has a monopoly on adult sports in Boston, they charge excessive fees, and apparently could care less about the average experience or the quality of their product. Seriously, full-time employees??? One thing they do not have a monopoly on is the right to get a permit yourself. I have not looked into this as of yet, but I am seriously considering competing for one in the town where I currently reside, Brighton. If anyone has suggestions as to how to make this possible, or is willing to collaborate on a soccer project of this magnitude, please feel free to let me know.

DO NOT PLAY IN THE BOSTON SKI AND SPORTS CLUB OUTDOOR SOCCER LEAGUE!!!

I can't speak for their other leagues, but this summer I played in the outdoor 7 o 7 coed league and it was a horrible experience.  Just about every aspect of the league wasn't just bad - it was terrible.

The fields: are in Allston and Brighton - convenient, but they are in horrible shape.  Terrible turf, and more than half our games were rained out.  Furthermore, the nets they use have gigantic holes, rendering many goals or near goals determined by the one ref, which is a problem...

The refs: deadly mix of apathy/incompetence.  The only thing they are interested in doing is collecting your money before each game.

The equipment: they gave us a mish-mash of like colored shirts - our team didn't even have matching t-shirts as they evidently used extra shirts from several past years.

the staff: greeted us with apathy and arrogance when we voiced our concerns.

My teammates and I had played previously in the Social Boston Sports league on the turf fields in Sommerville - we switched because of the attractive Friday night games of BSSC, but the league was horrendous - I will never again play in a BSSC league and I strongly urge anyone else not to play in their outdoor soccer league.

These guys are a long time embarrassment to the city of Boston.

Having gone back to them several times over the years (glutton for punishment?!) over several sports, allow me to give you a little advice if you're thinking about signing up for a BSSC sports league:

If you are a solo player hoping to meet some new people, don't bother. You'll be grouped with other solo players, most of whom won't have any social skills, like the ability to share. Or play defense.

If you're a group of friends just looking for a fun way to stay fit, know that there are large, mean people that play in their leagues. People who will go out of their way to hurt you. And it's complete permitted by the staff of BSSC.

If you played in college, find a better league. You will not enjoy the inconsistent officiating or the no-neck thugs that seem to form the core of all of the competitive teams. Winning rarely has much to do with skill. Rather the team that's willing to play more violently (but not "mean it") will come out on top.

And needless to say, if you're a woman, run, don't walk, away from their co-ed leagues. Unless you're into violent creeps. (Eww!)

The refs do not understand the rules of the games they officiate. Moreover, they simply don't care. If they don't like you, you will never ever have a call go your way. Hard, but fair and knowledgeable challenges will get you kicked off the field, while wild, thrashing, incompetent play that injures the opposing team will be rewarded.

There are some really incredible options out there in Boston for someone looking to meet people, play a sport, and stay in shape.

BSSC is most definitely NOT ONE OF THEM!

BSSC offers a ton of organized sports and social activities.  The activities are expensive, but the sports I've played have been well run & organized.  The offer ski trips every weekend in the winter.  If you are new to the area - this is a great place to start meeting people outside the bar scene.  Most team sports offer indy teams - comprised of individuals who want to play but can't or don't want to field a team.

An apology has been issued by the League and although it was quite too late, it was a sincere apology.

A top notch organization. So far i've played socccer and gone on a day ski trip. Soccer was a blast. i played with a weeknight team and we had games at a variety of fields around boston, some turf, some grass all in decent shape especially for the money which was around $80 for my share of the team cost for 8 games.  It rained so much this summer i dont envy the soccer organizer's task to reschedule all the games but they did that pretty quickly and gave us plenty of notice. Best part was going out once a week to play organized rec soccer with 20 or so other people and having fun with them. doesn't get any better.

Day ski was great too. bus pick up was early but i like getting to the mountain early for the fresher snow so that was no issue with me. trip leader gave us a few directions and let us sleep on the ride up then they did pretty much everything to get us on the lift as soon as we got there. Best part is not having to drive home after a hard day skiing (and not payin for the gas!) some people watched a movie but i just passed out on the ride home. Busses are the nicer touring type and not some junk school bus so that was nice and the price can't be beat as it is the same or even lower then just a lift ticket price at most major mountains.

BSSC works hard to bring Boston atheletes together for some competition.  I've been part of their Volleyball Leagues and Soccer Leagues and have found both experiences to be very organized.  The skill levels vary so you are sure to find something that will work for you.

I have been a member of BSSC for about three years now maybe going on four. I have mostly taken part in their Softball and Dodgeball leagues and have had a very good experience with both of the leagues, I'm not the team captain so I haven't really had to directly interact with them in general (other than in Dodgeball the guy Scott who runs it also participates in the league which makes it a lot of fun). Anyway, I think that the services they offer for adults to get out and play sports and ski and meet people are fantastic, just wish I had some more money I'd like to try some of their Ski trips. Also, wouldn't mind trying floor hockey.

I've been playing soccer with these guys for about a year. Its a great organization, cheap and a great way to get back in shape. Not to mention it gives our lads a good excuse to drink on Sunday night's after our games.

Basketball both co ed and mens along with flag football ahve always been run well.  Ive heard softball leagues are a bit iffy though.  Not the cheapest leagues but a good time none the less.  I would join if I were from out of town and didnt know people for the social outings even though Ive never been, heard good things.
