Best hotdogs on the northshore. My little brother has to go there everytime he comes up for leave from the army. I can't stand the guy who makes the dogs. He never shuts up and he talks your head off. Warning to people who wear any Bruins,Red Soxs, Celtics or Patriots gear, this guy will talk your head off about how bad a team is or how good a team is. I don't care you were at the Bruins game back in 1990 when the lights went out at the old Garden just make me a dog and let me be, Still a great place to eat and my brother likes Moxxie didnt think they even sold that stuff anymore.

I'm a hotdog afficionado and always have high hopes going into a hotdog-ery. Those hopes were unrealized.
My almost gold standard for a hotdog place is Top Dog in Rockport, MA. A place has to show the love -- the love of a hotdog and all that goes with it. While Boston Dog has a clever and interesting dog menu, the dogs don't measure up.
They are not cooked with love; they are merely steamed or put onto an electric press something like a George Foreman grill. Buns too. They offer a "regular" dog or an all-beef Angus dog. I tried both. The former was tasteless. The latter was a thick dog with only a little more taste. The mustard topping was skimpy on both. The slaw topping on one, while good, soaked into the bun immediately making it fall apart. On the Angus dog, I opted for simple mustard and relish, which were delivered skimpy and unexceptional.
I had a better dog here a few years ago (3 or more).
The ambiance is unremarkable: a mish-mash of sports pictures and a few hotdog memorabilia things. You can sit at a bar-height counter facing the street, which is nice, or chair height right in front of the dog counter.
Service is underwhelming. I would call it serviceable but not overly cheerful. Again, no hotdog love. You could have been buying a bag if chips at a 7-Eleven.
If you want a quick dog, then, sure, stop by. If you want a real hotdog experience (afficionados will know what I mean), you may be disappointed. BUT, who knows -- if didn't work for me but it might for you.

I have visited this place twice, the first time we enjoyed the atmosphere and the hot dogs. They have a few choices of types of dogs and tons of toppings to choose from.

A few weeks ago we were in Salem walking around and decided to stop in for a quick bite, I don't think I'll ever go back!

The guy behind the counter was eating and wiping his nose with a rag, he then used some hand sanitizer and just started picking up hot dogs and putting them on the grill machine with his bare hands. I'm sorry but after watching someone blowing their nose into a used rag and putting it down then just using some sanitizer I'm super grossed out! Maybe my idea of health and sanitation is too much but it just didn't seem right, then he continued to eat behind the counter, just a weird experience.

I have never eaten a pastrami sandwich in my life, and this place has made me love pastrami sandwiches!  It was the best sandwich, and the place was awesome.  I loved the cook!  We are from the south, and this is exactly the kind of place I wanted to experience.  He was loud, talkative, and inviting.  I can't wait to go back and have another great sandwich.

Boston Hot Dog is a total gem. I haven't eaten meat in over twenty years and that is no problemo when it comes to eating here, veg options include hot dogs AND sausages!

Kudos to the hot dog guy at the counter who specifically asked me if I was vegan when I ordered a veggie dog. He wanted to be sure that my roll was un-buttered! I was totally impressed and grateful that he would ask.

So much potential ... wasted. If you had a map of Salem, it should have a pig marking the spot where Boston Hot Dog is located. The caption should read "Here lies a damn good pastrami, lacking".

Served on a hot dog bun, with pickle spears (?) which were a bit too sweet. This pastrami was moist (yes *that* word works here) and tender. Could have amped the flavor a tad, but overall Nirvana was not reached. It coulda been, mighta been, but wasn't.

Mr. Grumpypants was still in fine form. Whenever mom came across someone that grumpy, she'd usually say they needed to get laid.

I've struggled with how much of an upgrade is now deserved. I'll bump one up, but that's all I can honestly say it was worth as a whole.

My review is for the owner, not the food. Nor, is it for the other people who occasional work the till (all of whom are great). The food is great, and something I often crave. However, visiting the joint really requires psyching myself out.

The guy who owns this joint freaks me out. He's very in your face, very awkward, and is scary when he's pissed. He's the type of person that, when you see them starting to fly off the handle, you really begin to worry. Out of the ten times I've visited, eight involved him getting pissed at a customer, his daughter, a worker, or the government.

Nothing could top a one-sided conversation he yammered about last year, though.

Buddy, it's not my problem you do fishy shit with your taxes, and therefore your wages are now being garnished, indefinitely. Can't you just say "we don't take credit cards?" I really don't need to know why. I do not care that you think taxes are "bs" and that "no one should pay for other people's handout bs". I really don't know why you thought it was a good idea to announce this to a crowd of potential customers, either, as if it were a casual vent about the shoddy weather outside.

Just give me my food, okay? Keep it to yourself, and give me my food.

A bunch of us were walking around Salem ornery for lunch and then someone said, "Hey, there's a hot dog place!"  What we got was good food and so much more.

What I love/miss about my native northeast is the audacity of strangers and I certainly got that here.  We entered and were greeted with a barrage of salutations and questions as to where we were visiting from, how we liked Salem, etc.  Once the guy behind the counter added the appropriate new pins to his map, he went on to extoll the virtues of his pastrami, which he had apparently prepared himself off-site, then kindly took all our orders and turned them around more quickly than I could have imagined.  He continued to talk to us about his place, the city of Salem, and just about everything else, all the while faithfully serving the sizable weekday queue behind us.  I miss places like this and will go back if I ever get back to Salem.

My chipotle veggie dog was fantastic, but, looking back, I wish I got the pastrami like several of my friends did.  They practically moaned the entire time.  My only excuse is that I was on a no beef kick at the time.  "No (something) kicks" are stupid.

This place is one word: AMAZING.  My only regret is that this place isn't located closer to home... maybe that is a good thing since I would be there weekly otherwise.

Hubby and I needed to grab a very quick dinner.  Walked in to an extremely friendly guy behind the counter and people who looked like they were really enjoying their experience.  It was interesting to watch people order one hot dog at a time but keep coming back for more.  Guy behind the counter asked if we had been there before, explained everything (sizes, products, etc) and told us to take a seat.  Did my hotdog first (ladies first, as he told us) and then hubby's.  At no point did he ask about payment - that is a huge trust factor to me.  You can make as many orders as you want and then you check out when you are full.  Pretty chill system - I liked the atmosphere.  We ate our hot dog, went to the counter, and he remembered our order and gave us the total.  Such a relaxing experience!

I had the California dog, normal size ("natural casing").  Everything was EXTREMELY fresh.  The hot dog, the veggies, the bun (sooo good), everything.  It was the best hot dog I have ever had - hands down.  Hubby had the Texas dog w/ the Angus beef hot dog -thing was GIGANTIC.  You certainly get your monies worth.  He really liked it - as much as I liked mine!  He was super excited that IBC root beer was sold there as well.

Will DEFINITELY be back here next time we are in the Salem area.  NOt a bad thing to say about this joint!

So Here is the problem with Boston.  You just don't know what a good hod dog is suppose to be.  If you want to claim the hot dog with the Wonder bread bun as your own... Fine, that's a Boston dog.  I know I won't like it so I don't have one.

But, then you get these hot dog shops who try to be cute and do hot dogs from around the country... badly!  If you put lettuce or Dijon mustard on a hot dog in Chicago, you'd be shot.  Same thing with the New york dog:  YELLOW MUSTARD and Sauerkraut, maybe onions.  that's it, walk away.

Next let's talk about price.  3.75 for a hot dog with no fries?  Come on!  I'd rather pay the price for a plane ticket to Chicago than eat one of these things.

I first stopped in here after a long day of work and feeling too tired to make anything for myself for dinner.  The man at the counter (the owner I think?) was delightful.  I'm a vegetarian and they have great veggie dog options, and I took his recommendation of the Smoked Apple and Sage dog.  I had no idea what toppings to put on and again took his recommendation of sweet pepper relish and honey mustard.  This veggie dog is DELICIOUS and I ordered it several times afterwards.

Until today I would have given Boston Hot Dog a solid 5 stars - yummy food, good service, nice local feel.  I'd been bugging my husband to try this place out, and finally, on a football Sunday, he reluctantly agreed to duck out from the game on TV for a few minutes to walk to Boston Hot Dog.  He ordered the Boston Club - listed as "bacon, tomato, lettuce - mayo optional".  When the order came it had mayo on it - we thought that you had to ask for mayo since it was listed as optional.  My husband hates mayo, so we apologetically asked the woman at the cash register if they could re-do it.  Glares quickly turned to outright yelling from the man working behind the counter (NOT the nice man I had encountered before).  We explained that we were confused by the wording on the menu, but he didn't care.  He did re-make the hot dog, literally grumbling the whole time while we got stares from everyone else in the store.  Needless to say, my husband will NOT be going back there, and neither will I.  I dragged him away from the game to try this "awesome hot dog place" only for us to be yelled at and terribly embarrassed.

Having waited tables in college, I've definitely had customers send things back, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that as long as you are nice about it.  I would have been fired if I had given those customers the kind of attitude we got today.  It's not like we were sending back a steak, either, that someone had been slaving over in the kitchen.

I'm very disappointed with the experience I had today because I really enjoyed this place up until now.   We weren't obnoxious one-time tourists, we're locals who live down the street and now they've lost long-term customers.  Maybe I'll go back if I get hungry for some verbal abuse.

The hot dogs at this place are pretty good and they do not skimp on the toppings.  However, the service I experienced here was a trainwreck.  Not only is the serve time ridiculously slow for a hot dog, but the guy behing the counter was a complete jerk to me for no reason.  Despite the food being tasty, I will never go here again.  Not into handing people my money when they are serving me a nasty attitude with my food.

The best hot dogs in the Bostonish area. I go here every time I visit Salem. Seriously. Get the chili cheese dog, and you will leave happy. They even offer a choice of kosher and nonkosher dogs. Awesome.

Would be 5 stars if they had more of a seating area, it's sometimes very difficult to eat the tasty hot dog if the place is packed and it's subzero outside.

Stopped by here with the boy on the way to a friend's Halloween party in Salem. We were famished and dressed as bacon and eggs but did you know those costumes AREN'T edible??? After several minutes of trying to chew through fabric, we decided to fork over the $3.50 for *real food.

My Arizona Dog was...underwhelming. Too much jalapeno, not enough flavor. The pepper and onion sautee was flavorless so the only thing carrying the taste torch was the dog itself.

The boy's Southern Slaw Dog, on the other hand, was mesmerizing. That chili--I could bathe in it, lather myself up with it, then dry myself off with a towel woven with it. Chili con carne? Chili come close to me! (Did that work? Puns were never my forte, despite repeated viewings of Sex and the City).

I've never had a better hot dog, period.

So far I've only had the Southern slaw dog and the Ruben dog, upsized to the 1/4lb frank, and they were both incredible. The ingredients were so fresh, the bun was toasted/buttered perfectly, and the owner (I think it was the owner) was very friendly.

The only downside is that this place is cash only, which is really annoying.

If you like hot dogs you MUST try this place.

I guess I was expecting something different. Instead, I discovered a small place with almost no seating.

The food was okay. The hot dog wasn't anything to write home about and my drink was about 90% ice and almost no soda.

The staff was slow moving, wasn't the most friendly/professional in the world, and it took them FOREVER to serve the people in front of me.

I literally had time to walk down the street to eastern bank a block or so down on the other side of the street, use their ATM (although Boston Hot Dog has an ATM inside their store), and walk back. To my surprise they were STILL serving the people that were at the register when I first walked in.

That being said they seem to have a good variety of toppings and hot dogs, but the "famous" chili they put on my hot dog had little flavor and tasted like it had been sitting around for a while.

It would be an okay place to stop and grab something in a pinch but I wouldn't recommend you go out of your way to go to this place.

Boston Hot Dog was a pretty good choice for lunch some time ago when I was visiting Salem, MA.  My friends and I were walking around town, checking out the scene, and decided to stop for a quick, inexpensive lunch.  At first, I cringed at the thought of eating a hot dog, but then I realized they had a Veggie Dog on the menu for me.

The Natural Casing Hot Dog or Kosher Beef Hot Dog comes on a bun with whichever toppings you choose.  You can create your own or order a specific dog off the menu. They have 10+ specialty dogs on the menu and a "Dog of the Month."  Also, available for the pickier eaters are the Chicken Dog, the Veggie Dog, the Atkins Dog, etc. Everyone seemed pleased - not the greatest hot dog ever consumed, but clearly tasty and filling. My Veggie Dog was quite good, as I added several toppings, but what really added to the experience was the grilled buttered bun.  All dogs are under $3 and you can add a side of chips, slaw, or baked beans for another buck or two.  Local brewed sodas also for sale - overall a good deal!

As far as I know, there isn't a location in Boston, so it should perhaps be called the "Salem Hot Dog Company," but hey, "Boston" works too.  I believe there might have been a few tables inside, but we ate our dogs on foot.

Until this week!  A friend of mine told me it was pretty good, so we went, and I have to say...  it was awesome!  The guy working there was a little crazy (in a fun way), and the hot dog he made me was amazing.

(As of  1/21/10, Boston Hot Dog has permission from the City of Salem to be open until 2am, Thur-Sat, each week.  No eating inside.  Like Bill & Bobs, late night, get your stuff and go eat in your car or house.)

This is my new favorite place.

I honestly tried like the dickens to avoid this place because I was trying to diet but I discovered something about them, recently, that has me going over there (and introducing friends to it) like a kitten to milk -- the *slow-cooked* pastrami!

    I've had the 1/4lb Angus Beef dog w/the home-made onion relish;
    I've had the massive Kielbasa with sauerkraut and deli mustard;
    I've had the chili, cheese n jalapeno-smothered, Texas dog;

....all deserving of high praise and a glowing story of their own.

But, as great as they all are, the slow-cooked pastrami is like food mana from heaven all in a class of its own.

When I saw the sign for it, I went in and asked Joe, "What's so different about slow-cooked?", and he launched into an explanation that only a foodie could give... and only a true foodie could love.  Basically, the pastrami is slow cooked in it's juices for quite some time and then, just before being served, is microwaved which draws the fat down considerably.  Then it's covered with shredded cheese that melts in moments.

Unlike most pastrami sandwiches which can be stringy, and curly, with blogs of marbled fat, Boston Hot Dog's slow cooked pastrami is is uber-tasty and just melts in your mouth like butter.  For people who normally have digestion problems with meaty items, this ends up layering down in your stomach better, rather than having chunks of unchewed pastrami crawling back up your food pipe.

Curious, I asked Joe where he got this idea and he was quick to give credit where it was due.  "On the Food Network.  I was watching that guy, Guy Fieri, and he was telling something that slow-cooked pastrami was one of his best kept secrets.  Well, not any more!!!", Joe chuckled.

I usually don't drink sugary drinks but Joe, the admitted foodie, sold me on a free slug of iced, cold, DRAFT root beer, fresh on tap from their new refrigerated keg setup and I learned, right there and then, that there's root beer... and then there's ROOT BEER!  It's a must try for root beer lovers but, if you're sensitive to sugar, then have a half glass, or share it with a friend. ;)

Joe and I had got to talking about all kinds of things like his gastric bypass (go ahead, ask him about it), but the conversation eventually turned to "bean dips" which are NOT on the menu.  He makes them himself for himself and friends.  Well, either I said a magic word, or he was just exceptionally generous but he explained how he makes 3 bean dips and then loaded me up with 3 containers full of each.

Now, is that a freakin' food joint to return to, or what?!

Stop thinkin' about it and get the heck down there... like I said, they're even open til 2am, Thur-Sat, so now there's a SERIOUS food place to satisfy your craving that doesn't leave you hostage to the greasefests known as Denny's or Bill n Bobs.

And tell 'em I sent ya!

Considering we all know what hot dogs are made of, they do a pretty good job making them yummy. You can get just about anything you can imagine on them. Or I can imagine, anyway.

What are veggie dogs made of, anyway - carrot tops and potato peels? (yeah, I know, texturized soy nastiness. But they do have them. . if you're into that kind of thing)

It's very small - probably room for 12 people to sit in the entire place. So don't go here with the softball team. Good place for a quick bite to go.

Good Selection, lots of variety, very clean.

My only issue was when I ordered a grilled hot dog the girl working there took a hot dog out of the steamer, put it on the grill for a minute and tried to pass it off as a grilled hot dog.

Hot Dog lovers know there is a big difference between grilled and steamed hot dogs...

It was very upsetting... go to POPOs in Swampscott or just got to the market and get a few Pearl Country Club hot dogs and a can of B&Ms.

This place is great in concept....everybody likes hot dogs, the prices are great, and the menu is as extensive as anyone could imagine for a hot dog joint.  Loved it the first time, but the last couple times it was kind of...unkept (greasy counters & the like)  Also, the service can be a little too in-your-face for me (and i'm a native new englander!)

Anyways, bottom line is...the dogs are really good (try the one with chili and coleslaw) and the mercury sodas are yummy.  Just get it to go...

    Veggie dogs- check
Loud and Obnoxious New Englanders- Check
At least one person making or eating a dog in a red sox hat/shirt- check

Well at least the dogs were good. The 4 of us walked in and we all wanted veggie dogs. Boy did the man behind the counter look defeated..

"I KNOW SOMEONE WANTS A REAL DOG!" but alas it was only us.

Somehow we managed to squeeze ourselves into a little corner of the room together to eat, but I wouldnt recommend any sort of group outing.

Stumbled into this place to get out of the cold while visiting Salem. Hubby was hungry so we decided to get a quick bite to eat. Looking over the menu it was hard to decide which way to have a hot dog. The owner was helpful with the suggestions so I took his recommendation of the black Angus dog in natural casing. I went simply chili, cheese and relish. He asked me if i wanted his homemade onion relish and I went with it.
Holy cow was that the most delicious relish ever! It was sweet but not too vinegary. I gave my husband some of it, he liked it and he HATES relish.

The draft root beer was a nice addition to the huge dog. Prices were extremely cheap especially for someone like me who only eats hot dogs at pro baseball and basketball games. My husband had the Angus dog with chili and slaw. We both had to use forks to eat the chili and left overs that fell off the dog because it was so much.

Small seating area because it's a tiny place but well worth it if you have to wait.

    Poop.

Along with breathing, sleeping and dying, it's one of those things that all humans have in common.

And what better way to generate some poop than to visit Boston Hot Dog Company?

Don't get me wrong here, I'm in no way equating this place to poop. Boston Hot Dog offers a mind-bending menu of hot dog topping combinations featuring everything from your plain Jane ketchup and mustard to crazy offerings like pastrami and bacon. You can apply these toppings to beef hot dogs or veggie dogs and even sausage. They also offer a fine cup of hand pulled draft root beer.

So if I'm going to poop anyway, I may as well eat something really delicious to generate said poop, and Boston Hot Dog Company is a great choice.

    Happy pooping!

We visited from Austin Texas in March and found this nice little surprise in a small little corner of Salem, Ma.  My husband and I tried the Reuben Dog, it was outstanding! The service was very friendly and hospitable. I wish they would open one here in Austin so we could eat there regularly, but we will have to settle for occasional visits. However, when we do return (and we will), this will be one of the reasons!

Where else in MA can you get five, count 'em, FIVE veggie dog options? With an impressive variety of veggie sausages and delicious homemade sweet onion relish, this place had easily become one of my weekly visits.

As for meat eaters - the menu options are endless, and from what I hear from my carnivore friends - just as delicious as my favorite Veggie Mexican Chipolte Sausage.

It's a tiny, hole-in-the-wall of a place but worth every dollar. Perfect for grabbing a dog or two and taking a walk around the beautiful, historic neighborhood. "Boston Hot Dog Co." is most definitely one of the "Best-Eats" in Salem.

    YAY, HOT DOGS!!

the taxi dog (pastrami, swiss, and mustard) is absolutely ridiculous. the texas dog (chili, cheese, halapeno peppers, and bacon bits) was supposed to have cheese sauce and it just had shredded cheese, but it was still super yummy. how good is pork product covered in pork product?

two dogs and two drinks were under $10, plus we were in there near closing time on christmas eve and the woman behind the counter gave us a free hot dog with ketchup and mustard. it was awesome.

they have so many choices, including hot dogs made of various meats and non-meats. they had some baked goods that looked absolutely incredible, too, but as i said i was there on christmas eve and i knew i was going to be forcefed baked items for the next couple days so i abstained.

i most certainly will be going back.

The Boston Hot Dog Company is a must do if you happen to be in the Salem area. It's called Boston, but it's not in Boston!

The guys that work there are so pleasant, chatty, and friendly. They make wonderful recommendations as to what you should eat and tell you their favorites! I tried their chili dog as I had to see if it lived up to my Cincinnatian standards, it didn't, but that's okay as I wasn't expecting it to! Their chili was good, had some nice spice to it and had great cheese on top. My friend had the reuben dog which he thoroughly enjoyed as well.

The place has a lot of local feel to it. The location is great, on the main strip that leads to the train stop so tourists always walk right by it. The prices aren't bad either. Each dog runs around $3-$4.

Love this place!  I would give it 5-stars if it had a better soft-drink selection.

Almost every time I have a free moment in Salem, I stop in for the Salem Trolley Dog. It is simply an amazing "meal"...

There are hot dogs, and then there are Hot Dogs, and if you ever pay a visit to Boston Hot Dog, you will understand the difference, and the need for capital letters.

I average maybe ten hot dogs a year, and I wish they were all as good as the ones I've gotten here.  With vegetarian options, a bunch of toppings, and several varieties of dogs to choose from, you'd be hard-pressed to come up with a combination that would fail to satisfy even the pickiest eater.

When I walked in, there were about four people in line ahead of me, and a largish family waiting for their food.  Two of the people in front of me walked out, saying the line was too long.  They obviously didn't know what I know, that the food is worth every minute spent in wait.

The man behind the counter didn't stand still for a moment, busier perhaps than that one-legged man in the ass-kicking contest, but still took the time to make sure everyone's hot dog was just how they wanted it, and managed to hold conversations as well.

I chose the Taxi Dog, which comes with pastrami, Swiss cheese, and brown mustard strong enough to tickle your sinuses long after you leave.  Be forewarned, they don't skimp on anything, this is a hot dog you eat with a knife and fork.

Some people might say that at the end of the day, all you've gotten is a hot dog, but these things are worth every penny you spend, and every minute you wait.

And another thing which takes this place straight into 5-star territory:
Moxie.  In a can.  Available for purchase.
