I have lived in Boston for more than 40 years and have never taken a Duck Tour. I did a couple of Walking Tours but this by far was the most  AWESOME tour Ever!!! This is one of those once in a lifetime, BUCKET LIST things, you know you just have to do before you die!

You haven't really seen Boston if you haven't seen it from a Boston Duck Boat!!!

There were four of us, two cranky kids and two tired parents.  OMG, it was late Nov, the boat was warm, the sky was beautiful, the sun was setting over the water, and the kids faces were glowing with great big smiles!  I'm going to have to go again without kids

Our ConDucktor , JIGSAW, was a great! He entertained the passengers who were in town with Boston history and entertained the 'under 10' crowd, with cute stories, keeping interest with humor and a friendly personality.  While driving on the street he gave a friendly hello to a statue lady (you had to be there) and then the safety info before we went in the water, which will be one of the most memorable moments for our family.  It was just so awesome, the whole family loved it!

This is one of those things that you just have to experience for yourself! Better than putting it on your Bucket List, just DO the BOSTON DUCK TOUR!!

Dirty Waters rocked our world!  LoL.  Really, he was great.

In short, excellent tour, tons of cool information, very funny and fun.  Excellent way to see Boston!  The only reason why they don't get 5 stars is because they are horribly expensive.  Nonetheless, this is an absolute Must-Do for anyone who visits (or lives) in Boston.

This was my review as posted on TripAdvisor in July 2010:

After reading several reviews on here, I decided to take in the Boston Duck Tour myself. Despite the overcast and light rain (July 14, 2010 - late morning), I had a great time! My guide was "Ray Beez", who was very informative (obviously) and also very entertaining. My DUKW was "Beantown Betty," one of the originals used during WWII.

I felt I was on the most lively tour because during our trip, we would pass several other DUKW vehicles and would quack at them, while they just stared blankly back at us. Ray would also bark at any dog on the street. The tour lasted about an hour and a half, but the time flew by.

My friends and I booked the tour over the phone with our student rates. Theres a few locations where you can board on the duck tour. my group chose prudential center. the driver was hilarious, had many jokes, was very informative about the history. I highly recommend doing this tour during the hour you expect the sun to set because when youre in Boston Harbor going through the water, the view can be quite amazing. and theres plenty of time to take photos while sitting through the water! but be warned that as the sun is setting you better get a quick shot because before you know it, the sun's down! we loved quacking at various places like young children high on sugar. there were no bathrooms at the prudential center location but it departs in front of a huge grocery/supermarket so go use the restroom/grab some snacks/drink before you board the duck! this is definitely a must in boston!

A great tour. I don't remember the name of our conducktor.. :) but he was very informative and entertaining. The duck tour offers visitors a chance to see the city from land and water. You get to see the city and main attractions. They don't accept reservations by phone so make sure you go early to pick and reserve a time if you didn't buy your tickets online.

Overall, I enjoyed the tour, but I think it's more like one of those things to just do once.

Be jealous. I experienced a duck tour that actually wasn't crowded, so even as an adult I got to drive the duck boat on the water! Heck yeah. This enabled me a photo op in the driver's seat with accompanying FaceBook post convincing all my friends outside of Boston that I'd taken up a part time job as a Duck Boat driver. Priceless.

I thought the tour would be silly and fun. and it was. But on top of that, I learned new things about the city I live in. I'd recommend the tour both for those who are just visiting from out of town, or those who live here and want to know the city a little better. On a gorgeous day it is a fantastic way to get a taste of Boston history in a very Bostonian way.

Just ducky! Completely quacked me up, even in the most fowl parts of Boston-definitely deserving of foie stars.

Alright, alright, I got it out of my system. As demonstrated above, I'm a girl who loves a pun and am therefore just the kind of person suited for a Duck Tour. A native of the Boston area, I have watched these babies ride/float by for years and never had the opportunity to be a passenger. Thanks to the Yelp Culture Club, I finally had my time and let me tell you, it was worth the wait.

Our excellent driver, Old Quackdonald, a character of some kind of farmer from Maine, had a dry sense of humor (although litered with the perfect amount of puns, of course) that really created a unique way to experience the city. Beyond that, he was full of all kinds of interesting tidbits that even a local would not know. Five stars for him!

The employees off the boat at the museum of  science were excellent as well, keeping order in what could be a chaotic mess of boats and tourists. My only complaint is it was difficult to hear out on the water and I think I missed some important information, including the history behind the actual boats and WWII.

Totally down with duck tours! (Yuckyuckyuck!)

After living in Boston for more than 3 years without doing this major tourist draw, I finally went on the Duck Tour. I have to say, it was not as much fun as I had hoped. Sure, the conducktor was funny. There were a couple new facts that I learned about Boston. It was kinda cool out on the Charles. But it was all just ok, not the best tour I have ever taken.

I think the tour could be fun for tourists and definitely for kids, but not really worth the $ for me.

I can see why everyone says to do the duck tour while in Boston. It's quite entertaining and if anything it'll let you see the area as a snapshot so you can plan things to do and see where places are. Very helpful.

We had a guru for our conductor and it was kind of funny. I would have preferred some other character, but the guy was really good. Thought the glitter and everything though was quite over the top. It was funny as his Boston accent would come out at times.

I think all tour guides should just use heavy Boston accents and that'd be so much more entertaining.

Very good tour. If back in Boston, may not go again, but I can easily say it is a must do if you've never done it before.

    If you...

    have never visited Boston before
    or
have never ridden on an amphibious vehicle
    or
are 12 years old or under

... then you might enjoy paying $32 for some light hearted, mostly touristy nonsense.

    It's not you, it's me.
I'm always so excited when I get to go on a Duck Tour and then I hate myself for hours after.

I was energized when I got on my duck. The driver was full of trivia and was pleasant enough. All of the other tourists were overjoyed from their recent trip to Cheers and were excited about going to Dick's Last Resort later that night.

About 15 minutes into it, I had enough of this tour. You'll learn some things about Boston... and then you'll realize that you're stuck on this duck.

The water part isn't nearly as exciting as it sounds. You drive through a sketchy abandoned dirt pit and plunge into the water... and then proceed to slowly move through the Charles. Did I mention slowly? Very slowly.

After another 15 minutes on the water, you will certainly be hit by the need to pee. But you can't. Because you're trapped... with people who want to go to Dick's Last Resort.

Silly trivial things aside... it's a unique tourist opportunity, but I question if its worth the steep price.

Riding a stinky bus that can float, filled with annoying tourists, with a fake-actor of a tour guide that spouts off information you can get in any book about Boston is not how I'd ever choose to show a visitor my hometown.  I can't imagine a worse way to learn about a city so full of twists, turns, and things you will never find if you don't explore yourself, or at least get to know a local.  That's putting aside the fact that there's far more history than can be covered in a short drive around town.  We're talking Boston, here, the cradle of American liberty, not LA.

Duck tours are waaaay overrated, and for tourists, not for real travelers that want to truly learn about an amazing city and its people, places, and character.

EDIT:  I appreciate the owner's comment, and we exchanged some cordial messages.  Bob is a real class act that other business owners would do well to emulate.  Obviously, many people love the duck tours and I am glad his business is going well for him.  It's just not for me.

Not a fan of tours. Definitely not a fan of duck tours.

I thought it would be a good idea to do a duck tour with some friends since we will be living here for at least 2 years. Our driver was dressed up as a pirate captain for some reason.
The tour itself was too long for my liking. It lasted around 2.5 hours. I was dozing off several times, especially when it went into the water. The only cool part was when it actually went into the water (2 seconds of pure bliss and excitement). Besides that, he just talked and we listened. Oh, he let everyone in the tour bus take turns steering the boat while in the water so I thought that was nice of him...unless that's part of the tour...

I wasn't expecting much, but I wasn't expecting it to be that long. It was an okay experience I guess.

Young or old, tourist or not, a ride on the duck is fun for all!

Old QuackDonald was our conductor and shared with us very interesting historical facts and tidbits, while "quacking" a few jokes.

Land or sea, this duck does it all. Definitely best part was when our ducky went floating in the Charles River. The engine made it  a bit hard to hear Old QuackDonald but I think most of us were enjoying the scenic views of Boston and the experience anyway. If you don't want to get sprayed, don't sit in the front!

    Gosh, I love Boston.

I've been on Boston Duck Tours more times than I probably would like to admit, but it's fun each and every time.  I've never had a bad tour guide, and I've never been ashamed to quack  at all the locals (when prompted to do so by the tour guide, of course), who undoubtedly think I'm ridiculous.  I wish I was a kid so I could get to drive the duck when it's in the water!

The tours depart from various locations in the city.  I've left from the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium departure points.  I think the tour length varies a little bit depending on where you leave from, but it has never been too long to the point of being boring.  To the contrary, the tour is always interesting.  It's definitely not necessary to go more than once like I have, but I love learning historical facts about every place I go to and the Boston Duck Tours are a great way to do just that.

I'm moving to the Boston area next week, and even then, you still will be able to find me on a duck tour.

I was disappointed in the duck tours.   We drove around Boston for a while and got a decent amount of history,  but knowing a little about the history of boston,  I feel like we missed some of the highlights(boston tea party etc.)  There is really no point of entering the water as there was no additional information provided, and there isn't much you can see from the water.

Duck is neat, but that is about all.

Decent trip but a little disappointed, and probably not worth the money.

So apparently the businesses on Newbury Street bitched about the Duck Tours and it's become a "no quack zone". Pssshaw.

Anyway, when I first moved to Boston, I was strictly in the "no way in hell am I ever doing the Duck Tour" crowd. And I held onto that for 11 years and was pretty resolute. I had also said that I would never go ice skating but I was in a very serious relationship (the kind where you make plans to look at wedding bands) and I relented on the ice skating. But as much as she tried to get me to do a Duck Tour, I wouldn't. Fast forward and in a new relationship and her family comes to Boston and not knowing how to entertain them, I suggest taking a Duck Tour. Desperate times, desperate measures and all that stuff.

Anyway, while I'll be the first to admit when I've made a dumb move, not going on a Duck Tour before was a very dumb move. It was a blast. It really is amazing to see the city you live in through the eyes of a tourist and it definitely gives you a different perspective. But not only that, the driver we had--Cowgirl-- was hysterical. It was like a mobile comedy show with historical information thrown in. If you're a MA native or a transplant and haven't taken a duck tour, you should definitely do it.

This was a terrific tour! A friend was visiting and very much wanted to take a Duck Tour - really just to say she took one, but I was excited because I really love history and Boston has so much, even living here it's hard to absorb it all.

While the price was a little high ($32 per adult), it was definitely worth it. A great 80 minute tour of all of the highlights of Boston and a great overview of the city's history. Also, taking a nice trip on the Charles River was an added bonus. Our tour guide (the Joker) was AWESOME! I would be interested to see what the tour would be like with a different tour guide, because I do believe he really added something to the experience. He was a little corny and a little pun-ny, but what are you gonna do? It's a tourist attraction, folks. If you want serious, go to a museum where people glare at you if you talk above a whisper.

We departed from the Museum of Science and it was easy breezy. Note that the closest T stop to MOS is closed through the end of 2011 (I can't remember the name, sorry). However, they have a shuttle running between North Station and the museum that I think was free, so it's actually not a big deal. It's also not a bad walk, depending on temperature.

I'm not generally into touristy things, but I loved taking the duck tour in Boston.  For a very reasonable price, we got to take a tour of the city while our humorous and appropriately over-the-top guide pointed out historical buildings and told us tales of intrigue regarding the city.  I'm a fan of factoids.

There were embarrassing moments when our entire bus/duck sporadically quacked at innocent passers-by and eye-rolling locals, but it's just one of those things that you have to embrace as a tourist.

The tour is very family-friendly.  Our guide let some of kids go up to drive the duck in open waters.

This wasn't cheap and it was slightly dorky, but it was definitely worth doing. We had a great tour guide who knew more about the city than I could possibly absorb in just one trip! The "duck" was comfortable and high enough that we got a great view of the city.

My least favorite part: going into the Charles. Not because it wasn't nice, but it turned into family hour - an excuse for every kid on the Duck to take a turn driving and for the parents to have a photo op. There wasn't much info given by the guide during this part of the trip and although plunging into the Charles was a unique experience, this 20-minute portion of the tour didn't seem to have much added value.

An absolutely fantastic tour. I was concerned initially that the goofy atmosphere would lead to just joke after joke with not much in the vein of an actual city tour (especially when our driver showed up dressed as a Joker from a deck of playing cards), but I was WAY off.

Yes, there are jokes, plenty of them. Some are cheesy but there's a ton of genuine laughs to be had. In additon to that though, is a thorough and in-depth tour of the city. Places, names, dates, and events are all here and in great detail. While a little expensive seeming at the get-go, you'll quickly see why you should probably book at least a day or two in advance to make sure you get a seat, these tours are not just fun, but provide you with great info on the city as well. Definitely make this a part of your trip!

My friends and I could not decide what to do on our last full day together while vacationing in Boston. One wanted to do the Freedom Trail tour, I wanted the hop on/hop off trolley tour, and the other didn't really care. Since we were already at Top of the Hub, we bought tickets for the Duck Tour at the Shops at the Prudential Center. Tickets with my student ID were around $30. Was it worth it? I guess so. It didn't blow me away, but it worked for us.

We had Captain Mack as our tour guide. Let me say, I think your guide has a HUGE impact on how much you will like your tour. They choose the little factoids to throw out in their script, and their personalities play a big role with the characters they play. I'd recommend asking around about the popular guides before buying tickets.

Mack was cool, and it is a fantastic way to see the city and learn a lot about Boston. The "ducks" get really crowded, and most people on board had trouble figuring out how to sit together to stay with their friends and families. I know we went during a busy season, but we showed up early and originally got good seats near each other, but moved in order to be nice for the families that boarded late. I didn't want to babysit someone's 3 year old while they sat at the other end of the duck, so I moved away from my friends. It didn't seem fair considering we were the ones who took the advice of the person who sold us our tickets and arrived early. For the price, I wish they didn't pack the rides so full.

Overall, it was fun, I learned a lot, and I'm glad we did it.

This is the first Duck tour our family went on and led to our tradition of booking a Duck tour wherever they're offered in any new city we visit.

The captain was great!  High energy, a lot of fun, and an edutaining experience.  I would highly recommend, especially if you have children.  The captain lets the kids take a turn at the wheel while on water.

I was told to take this tour by some friends and it did not disappoint.  It was a great way to get to know the city and I have to say, I learned a lot.  They were very into their "facts" and wanted to make sure they got it all right.  It was a lot of fun and I would recommend it to first time visitors to the city.

The tour in the river was neat (to see the transition from boat to car) but I have to say, it didn't provide much value to me.  Was great for the kids, as they let them drive the boat in the river... It was a nice little break but nothing overly exciting about it.

The guides btw, are great.  The company knows they can make or break your experience - so they hire well!  Great job.

Everytime I talk about the Duck Tours, I get laughs and snickers! What a judging group of people my friends are! In all seriousness, I laugh too. The duck tours is a once in a lifetime thing, and it should be that way. It was fun, and should be enjoyed with laughs as well as awes. For $32 we got 1.5 hours of land and water. Being in the charles river was the best part. I got amazing photos of the Boston skyline from the charles.

Some parts were boring but heck, beats walking.

Fun times!! Nice quacky tour of the city! The water portion was nice but almost unnecessary in terms of seeing new things, but the novelty was cool! Yay ducks. Yay history! Caution: a boat full of kids can suck if they buy those darn quack whistles!! I wanted to kinda throw the whistles overboard. Hence the water would be useful in that situation.

We took the 5:10pm duck tour on a Thursday evening (it's the shortened tour) because the 3:00pm tour was sold out by the time we went to the ticket booth (make sure you purchase your tickets EARLY). I was actually glad that we got the shortened tour, because it was at the perfect time of day.

I don't remember the name of our car/boat, but our tour guide was a Celtic fan because he was wearing celtics gear from head to toe. He was extremely fun and friendly (looked and sounded very Boston), and was entertaining from start to finish. I don't think we could've asked for a better tour guide. He gave the perfect anecdotal stories and jokes that went well with the tour.

We sat at the very front row of the car/boat because it had the most leg room (beware, the seats have very minimal leg room), but that was a bad mistake because all the hot air from the car/boat was circulating straight to our faces, which was very unpleasant. I suggest you sit towards the back!

If you have small children, you should, however, get a seat towards the front because the guide will let the small children "drive" the boat on the water, and you want to make sure you get a good picture of that!

Great tour to pick if you want to be lazy and stay in the shade, exactly how I was feeling when I went on it! I went a couple weeks ago after seeing ducks on wheels all throughout the city and on the water.

I love history however I really didn't learn too much from the tour because it seemed like our tour guide was too busy with keeping up with his stage appearance. I think he was supposed to be a pirate or Willie Nelson.....still confused on that one. He would tell tidbits of information on the area we were in or the buildings but the cheesy jokes overpowered the actual information on the city.

I wouldn't pay $32 to go on it however if you want to sit down and enjoy some scenery, this may be your thing.

I highly recommend taking this tour. It was informative, covered an hour and a half worth of sites and history, and it was entertaining, thanks to our cowgirl tour guide. The bus sits well above other cars and street level so photographers get a clear view and unblocked shots.  The ride into the water was exciting. I'd recommend taking this tour as the first thing you do in Boston. Then you can decide what you want to see and do from there. The cowgirl tour guide was awesome. She was funny and made the tour fun.

For a science nerd who continually zoned out and doodled during US History throughout elementary/middle/high school, the Boston Duck Tours was a great experience! The driver kept us laughing throughout the tour, and pointed out a lot of historical places, along with interesting tidbits about each. I didn't walk the Freedom Trail, but he pointed out a few places along it, which I decided to walk to on my own after the tour. I would definitely recommend this!

This was a lot of fun.  I've lived in Massachusetts all 31 years of my life, and visit probably 2-3 times a season, if not more - but I did a Duck  Tour for the first time last weekend.  And it was one of most fun attractions I've ever done!  Its 80 minutes - not too long, not too short - and gives you a grand tour of the city, with some historical tidbits and humor in between.

Our adventure was hosted by Disco Danny.  The tour went through all the main buildings, parks, and historical sites in Boston, and then headed for Cambridge.  To get to Cambridge, the amphibious vehicle crosses the Charles River in the water, where you get incredible views of the Boston skyline and the Charles River.  We even got to steer the Duck Boat!

Very fun, $32 and worth every penny.

If you're a tourist in Boston, this is just one of those things you have to do before you leave, rain or shine. In my case, it was raining a little, and we still had a good time. Each experience is different because you have a variety of ducks to get on and many different conducktors. Our conducktor was the guy who wears the Harley Davidson jacket, but doesn't ride a motorcycle, haha. Anyways, the duck is covered, so don't worry about getting wet, but it's a very cozy, and tight squeeze in the seats for two people, so be sure you like your neighbor.

There was some construction on the river, so the tour was slightly modified in that the duck couldn't go as far up the river, but they gave us complimentary passes to return again sometime to experience the full tour. Each person got one on the tour. Our conducktor even let all the kids in our group have a go at driving the duck when it was in boat mode and take pictures of them, that was pretty cool. Also, it doesn't really matter what side you sit on, but there will always be some slight glare from the windows or some obstructions in your pictures due to the hanging lifevests on top.

Overall, we had a good time and were entertained throughout. You actually see quite a bit and I would recommend to do this first or in the beginning of your visit to Boston. It goes over the highlights and gave us an idea of what we wanted to see further or in more detail in person. Plus, it takes you by the USS Constitution, which is a little hard to get to by metro if you try to go otherwise. Although, I did compare my experience with that of another friend who was in town visiting as well, and her conducktor gave a little bit more history about the different sites. It's just interesting what the focus is, but you're guaranteed to learn something. In addition, be sure to take advantage of all the coupons and discounts you get from showing your ducktour ticket stubs at participating businesses.

I will start by saying, that I am not a group tour person at all! But this one was great! For $30 you really get to see a lot of the city, from land and sea. I think your experience will vary, based on your guide. But, our guide, Doctor Love with the purple duck, was kick ass! His throwback hippie jokes were awesome, and his attire was not to be missed.

I highly suggest going on this boat with wheels tour if you find yourself in Boston. But parents, please spare all of us, and do not buy those annoying duck horns for your children! Even if they cry and say they have to have one, tell them that duck horns make people bleed from their ears!

I've wanted to take a duck tour for years and FINALLY took advantage of a great opportunity to do so this past weekend (thanks Yelp/Boston Duck Tours!) and it did not disappoint! Dirty Waters was our knowledgeable tour guide and he was just the right amount of cheesey without overdoing it. Learned some great fun facts about the city and its rich history, and who knew they let passengers drive the boat! Highly recommend this activity for fun-lovers of all ages, although definitely keep your eyes and ears open for deals - I probably would have missed out on this great experience if I had to pay full price.

We were a five-person, student production team from Emerson College, at the Duck Boat Tours on a Saturday afternoon to film for a television show at school. Because we were a film crew, I interacted with both the corporate department, as well as the conDUCKtors and other staff members at the Boston Duck Tours. Both departments were welcoming, helpful, and accommodating.

Having a small, student run film crew show up, and cram themselves onto the back of a Duck during prime tourist time can be a stressful ordeal for most companies. Not for the Boston Duck Boats! First off, Bob Schwartz, the Marketing Director, the one I was in contact with in the corporate office, was extremely personable and made sure we had everything we needed set and ready to go for shooting day. He gave us tickets aboard one of the Ducks for filming.

Once we arrived at the Prudential Center to board our Duck, the staff there made sure to explain to us which seats would be the best for viewing (and therefore filming) the many sights and attractions on the tour. We even received VIP status and got to board first!

Our conDUCKtor was Major Groovy, who, in addition to cracking jokes, was very knowledgeable about the city. He was interactive with our crew and let our host drive the boat. He even let us film the boat saying their infamous "quack, quack" and let our host shoot her closing stand up in the driver's seat of the Duck (once it was parked obviously). Major Groovy also gave us an informative interview at the end of the tour.

Though having a film crew aboard a Duck is certainly not a normal way to take in the sights, as a former tourist and now resident of Boston, I highly recommend this as a fun, interactive, and relaxing way to view the city by land and by sea. The Boston Duck Boat tours is well managed and friendly business, always willing to please. We had a great time, and they helped make our production a success!
