Sometimes a guy's just gotta dress like a rabbit. Thanks Boston Costume.

After online retailers like Amazon tried to charge me a fortune for specialty items like "plastic Flava Flav novelty clock necklaces," I made a call to the Garment District's masked marauders, and stopped in for my first non-Halloween needs.

Oh what a difference off-season makes! They had every piece to my intricate design (fuzzy ears, nose/mouth mask and that shitty clock necklace) for less than Amazon's list, even EXCLUDING shipping! Rock bottom prices make it okay that there's a "no return" policy. The merch, dude; you can go back whenever you'd like.

Besides, returning that holy trinity would mean no more anonymous furry sex with Alice. Eh, who cares? I'd be late, be late for the very important date anyway.

Boston Costume is a costume shop coupled with a vintage clothes store (the Garment District) next to One Kendall Square (which IS different than Kendall Square). I'm pretty sure Boston Costume used to be in Chinatown and then when business got tight they partnered with The Garment District, but don't take that as fact.

They've got a pretty big selection nestled into the Boston Costume proper area (1/2 the first floor...the other 1/2 is the crazy pay-per-pound mayhem of the Garment District).

The prices aren't always the best, which is what keeps me from giving it an extra star, but between BC and TGD you should be able to find what you're looking for, and often you'll find accessories or pieces in TGD's vintage section you won't be able to get on-line as easily.

I made a really sick Michael Jackson costume (and it was the year BEFORE he died, thanks) from stuff foraged here + a surgical mask from RiteAid. Sure it cost me like a total of $100 or something to piece it together, but it was worth it. I even got some Smooth Criminal shoes. One size too small and with a few staples inside of it for some reason, but yeah, you're jealous.

Maybe it's not fair to review BC with TGD, but I'm pretty sure they are the same business at this point. They have one set of cash registers for cryin' out loud.

After reading a bunch of good review about this place I was really disappointed. Although they have a large selection of things to choose from, most of it is over priced for what you're getting. $90 for a pre packaged costume that I could get at a seasonal store for half the price! Overall, I'm not really a fan.

T-minus 7 days to Halloween. Boston Costume has opened up all huge and sprawled out up and over into Garment District and up the new stairs. People are fuckin everywhere. The shop won't close til midnight. The choices are endless. Piles of discarded try-ons are morphing into giant hobo-heaps. I need to sort out my costume. STAT.

And then there you were. Mr Wig Man. An ocean of calm in a sea of distress.

Every question I had - you had the answer... Do you stock this? Yes, it's over there. Where can I find this? We stock it but it's cheaper in the medical section of CVS. Can I try this on? Let me help you. How does this work? You need this, these and that.

Wig Man - you're my hero.

    Don't Waste Your Money!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't get it.  I rented a hat for halloween for my costume.  Normally, if I was able to find that specific hat, it would cost about $25-$30.  Renting it at $25, then charging me $20 for shipping, is outrageous.  Especially when it had some dust on it when it arrived.

This place is over priced & the shipping is an absolute JOKE!  If you charge $20 for shipping, one would think you could possibly supply a RETURN SHIPPING LABLE.  NOPE, not in this case.  $20 for a hat that weighs less then 2lbs, but says it weighs 5.0lbs.

Worst of all now I have to return this thing, at a certain time & pay for return shipping out of my own pocket.

    GIRLS COSTUME WAREHOUSE, AHOYYYYYYY!!!!!

Came here for some pre-planned costume shopping, and I mean, fcuk. This may, in fact be the first time EVUR that I have been able to find absolutely EVERYTHING I was looking for...well practically.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I'm sort of a sugar junkie, so anything involving gorging myself with sugar babies and mini milky ways while drinking some sort of dyed green alcoholic punch and eating dirt (cupcakes with gummy worms :-o ) is sort of a high priority on my proverbial "must do" list.

NAUGHTY NURSE! FRISKY FIREFIGHTER! PEEP MARSHMELLOW CANDY???? They've sort of got the whole spectrum of whorey halloween costumes down, and while vast, the S-M-L range that vinyl runs in is not really something suitable to my tomboyish form, nor is it anything of remarkable creativity when you come home with a costume in a bag. Matted wig, velcro clasps, earrings not included. Ugh. No thanks. But they're still in high demand, so .. WHORE ON!

There was also a couple high quality costumes such as a Victorian one that we were particularly fond of, $115, little too rich for my blood this month. The 28% interest rate on my credit card gets the girl down.

In addition, if you can't find the perfect costume in a bag or range of accessories, mosey on upwards and onwards to the Garment District and rifle through racks of polyester leotards and bejeweled vests.

    UPDATE:

Guess who just got a sick pair of GRILLZ here on the cheap? That's right, it was me. Let's double up my awesome points now shall we?

    ------
Everyone else has covered the place so let me just add: you can rent costumes here. Sure the stuff is pricey but at least you won't be stuck with it forever.

PS--there are tights and accessories available in both Boston Costume and Upstairs in Garment District. If you can't find stuff on one floor check the other.

I know Halloween is over and I know that this was Boston Costume's last year, but I just had to give the place props.
I have ventured to Boston Costume the last 3 years and I have had amazing success there.  I just want to express my gratitude to the owner for providing us city dwellers with a convenient location and decently priced merchandise.  Boston Costume was one stop shopping for everything Halloween.
I also want to thank the owner for the friendly greeting I received every time I entered his store and his assistance in pointing me in the right direction for what I was looking for.
I will surely miss you Boston Costume!!

The store officially closes on Dec. 31, 2006. (article in Metro)

**UPDATE: store will re-open in Cambridge (Jan. 2007) at same location as the Garment District.

Madness: noun. Boston Costume at 8pm on October 30th.

This place gets absolutely zany in the run-up to the biggest costume day of the year.  Wigs, costumes, and accessories are strewn about the floor as Halloween procrastinators scramble to find the perfect cape and/or mustache and/or fake bling.  Fortunately, Boston Costume knows how to manage this chaos and despite the appearance of total anarchy, the staff runs a pretty tight ship.  They stay open longer, have more staff on hand, and more registers open to handle the flood.  All in all, a pretty painless experience for the night before Halloween.

Whatever you do, don't buy your costumes from the place.  They are a rip off.  You can buy the same costumes for half the price in Waltham and on the internet!!!  Plus they have a no return policy.

Awesome for Halloween! Prices range from super-cheap eyepatches and cigarette holders to hundreds of dollars for leather masks from Venice. You can rent complete costumes too, if you're into that scene. Also, I shop here year-round for dorky accessories, like opera gloves and false eyelashes. The staff is really friendly, and in every month but October they look awfully lonely. Steer clear of the goth stuff tho - way overpriced, and  poor quality - you'd be better off at Hubba Hubba, or hell, even Hot Topic.

Boston Costume is a great source for anything costume related. I've rented a full costume, and bought small pieces for theater work. While the prices aren't cheap, I've managed to find some bargains in the off season ($8 for long, red gloves meant for a sexy Mrs. Claus costume were easily modified for a children's play - and were cheaper than the $15 run-of-the-mill red gloves on the next rack). The store is always staffed with knowledgeable, friendly staff, though it is understandably a crazy place during Halloween.

I am not a huge fan of costumes except on Halloween, but I needed a costume for a birthday party.  Since I was not super into the idea of dressing up, I went to buy my costume a few hours before party.  I decided to head here because they were the only costume place open and reasonably close to me.  The prices are always expensive for stuff like this so you have to decide how much your willing to spend on something you most likely not wear again.  Boston Costume is well organized by theme and the more realistic something looked the more expensive it seemed to be. I settled on getting a outrageous wig, instead of a full costume.  The wig was around twenty bucks and it was a glorified mullet with a braided tail.  It was hilarious, I think most of the people at the party ended up wearing it.

This place is so much fun!  It's basically the first floor of the Garment District.  I've gotten extremely cool wigs here.  My sisters and I (and even our Mom!) recently found some really cute costumes for a 70's themed party.  I wish in life we could dress in costumes every day...I'd get them all here.

I worked here last Halloween. It was a great place to work and we all had so much fun. The owners were such awesome, kindhearted people. This place was the best place for costumes in Boston. Sad to see it go:(

... my review of Garment District kind of covers this place too. though i'd like to add that Boston Costume has a nice selection of moderately priced costume make-up. also, they have a ton of pimp and hoe costumes if that's yr thing.

I asked a sales associate for a specific make up color, and the associate made a very feeble attempt to look for it, and then stopped looking.  This is annoying considering that all of the make up colors were labeled on the back of the display case, and she could easily read the names of the colors from behind the counter whereas I could not.  No customer service whatsoever.

My line of work requires me to do quite a bit of shopping for costume components. Boston Costume is, unfortunately, the go-to place, being the only large costume store in the area. If you're a rich white college kid, this is where you can find your racist, misogynist costume that'll be just perfect for the frat party! Want to dress like a sex trafficker and dress your girlfriend up like a "sexy Indian"? Look no further - BC has enough cheap, gawdy, racist trash for all the kids. Seriously, if they don't get how a HUGE display of "pimp" (aka, sex slave owner) accessories, and sell fringed mini skirts (sexy "Indian") and overpriced conical Asian hat with a little false black braid attached (next to the "sexy" "Geisha" costumes), is disgusting, I don't know if they're capable of thinking beyond the fact that racist, exploitative costumes sell well among the rich white college set. Every time I walk into this place I want to smack every single person that works and shops there.
