Often an oasis from city life, right in the middle of the city. That doesn't stand true for sunny weekend days when the weather is warm or after night has fallen. But, by and large, a beautiful escape from the chaos and gridlock of Boston streets. A place to take a blanket, a book, a boy, and a ball to spend the afternoon.
*also a great place to show off your darling little pooch if you are lucky enough to have one.
I walk around here alllll the time.
I like to play dodge-the-homeless and dodge-the-guys-with-clipboards. It's fun!
Aside from the denziens who haunt the place (do NOT tell the lady near the statue what time it is!!!), it's nice to walk around. Great playground for the kids. The frog pond is both quaint and bacteria-infested.
I like walking here on nice days.
So I am a major dork when it comes to open spaces and public parks...and let me tell you America, Boston knows how to do it right! Every public space is well utilized, beautiful and has the perfect ratio of green and built structures. I can't name and yelp every space so I thought I would comment on the largest: Boston Common.
What a great park. After walking around all morning, a VERY big meal and suffering through the mid-day heat around Fenway and Copley Square we decided to rest our tired feet on the grass at the park. So beautiful...nice grass, friendly people and animals - what more could you ask for. The swan boats were a little excessive but I guess that makes it uinque.

Definitely a cool park to take a look at if you're in Boston for a day. The Freedom Trail takes you right by (and there's a few stops right around the Common on all sides) and you can take a detour in to see some cool monuments and statues.
There's a great Civil War Memorial right in the middle of the park that is worth a walk up the hill if you're not too tired. It provides a good view of the city skyline in the rear and there's a few things to see. The park leads out to the Capitol building which is a great thing to see.
I mean, it's a park. I don't really know what goes on here normally (maybe festivals? yoga?) so I'm sure I could give a better review if I was more informed. It was a beautiful place to see and it would be a great picnic spot if that's your thing.

In this crowded, bustling city where everyone seems to be rushing, Boston Common is a great place to relax and sit down, maybe after picking up some food nearby (Falafel King, anyone?).
It's always so nice and pretty here. 5 stars, all the way.
There is something about a giant, green park in the middle of a big city. True this isn't Central Park by any means, but for a city as big as Boston, this park just seems to add that touch of serenity anyone would need during a busy week....
There are benches everywhere, where you can rest or just take in the scenery of live musicians trying to make an extra dollar here and there, or dogs chasing tennis balls or frisbees...Paved pathways curve around this park and take you to some small lakes or hot dog stands or even ice skating in the winter I hear. It also has an outdoor theater which Shakespeare in the Park uses every summer, and what could be better than seeing a free play in the outdoors, on the grass of a park as beautiful as this one?
There are also a couple of random monuments and statues which just adds to the historical sense of this city. As long as you can ignore all of the random street vendors selling their boston tshirts for $5 a piece, this place is pretty much perfect. Granted, I have been here in the winter yet, so not sure how much I will be able to stand it then, but with a parking garage underneath and multiple t lines that go here, this is the perfect meeting point for anyone or any group.
So Boston, take care of this park. I noticed too much trash here on the ground when I was here, so I hope I was there on an off day...
Um, it's a park. With grass. And trees. It's nice, but I don't understand why this would be somewhere that people tell tourists to go to. I think it's just something to appreciate as a park/public space. Unless you really have a thing for statues/monuments.
The Public Garden, on the other hand, is slightly more exciting and scenic.
The Common is not as nice as the Public Garden, but it is still a nice park. It is a lovely place to walk through on the way to work or to enjoy lunch. On obligation-free days, it serves as a place to sprawl out and relax. Beautiful, green, mostly clean during the warm weather. In the winter, it offers a public ice skating rink. It does however, harbor some overly-friendly fauna and quite a few hobos.
I have heard the park has a night curfew in place now, which is a good idea in my humble opinion. Once my dad was walking through the park at night to get to his car and a couple guys tried to mug him. Unfortunately for them, they totally underestimated my father's all-around badassery and one of them ended up getting stabbed in the leg with his pocketknife. Nice try, suckas.

I recall watching the NBC television show Boston Common years ago (not that great of a show), but didn't know it was a park until later on.
I came here a few times during my trip to relax and nap in the sun and people and dog watch. You certainly get all kinds of people here -- college students, professionals having their lunch, tourists (like me), homeless, families, and the occasional activist ranting how the world is going to end.
The park could be kept in better shape though. During my nap selection process, I saw patches of dirt within the lawn, but not muddy or anything. However, after awhile, I said screw it and just laid down. Public Garden is much prettier, but Boston Common is where all the action is at.

I like this park has a garage underneath, but it cost $11 for a day of parking. It is also easily accessible by the RED line at Park St station.
Good for picniking and enjoying the sun. Great for people watching and for children to play at the Tadpole Playground.
There are stalls selling lemonade and roasted nuts etc/. Nearby also have some restaurants.

This review is for the Boston Common. NOT the Boston Gardens in which some people don't understand the difference.
This place is colorful. Baseball field or two, tennis court, a couple of train station entrances, nice view of the court house, nice view of the homeless and panhandlers.
Everytime I come here I desire to see someone who resembles Tyrone Biggiums. Everytime, I leave disapointed. There are some nice people who come here and hang out but most of the wise locals will relax at the Gardens and not here. If you give any change out you are immediately swarmed. Imagine tossing a bag of crumbs out and having pidgeons and seagulls swarm you. That is what happens when you give any change to the panhandlers. Some of them here are professionals and you will see them work in groups around different sections of the city.
Want to help someone out asking for change? Offer to buy him a quick lunch nearby, don't give them money. That won't help them.
Tyrone Biggums: [hands full of money] Crack, here I come!
Festivities are held here, such as Walks, Fireworks, Ice Sculptures just to name a few. Baseball Field and Tennis Courts for locals. Ice Skating at the Frog Pond for some winter fun. Merry-Go-Round under the summer sun. Great lunch spot for gorgeous days.
Really, a mix bag of people that come here. I did notice a sign this time around - 11pm closing. Not a bad idea cuz it does get creepy here late at night.
What a beautiful place to check out. Whether you are just visiting or a boston native, this is a must visit. There is so much to do from, sports, a quite stroll, water park for the kiddos, or laid back swan tour ride. I prefer the river walk in San Antonio, but the swans do add a certain cuteness. Get your provisions ready and have a picnic. The wife and I got a table cover and flipped it upside down to prevent and moisture on our seat. Fresh baked french bread accompanied with various, cheeses, fish, meats and spreads for our sunny day. The ducks, doves, sparrows, pigeons, squirrles are relentless, so unless you like uninvited, don't feed the animals. They will hover over your entire afternoon/brunch. Be weary of the law, but no Sunday afternoon would be complete without a bottle of bubbly or wine/martini. Try other activities, like: badminton, volleyball, baseball, tennis, football, frisbee... If you are in need of more quiet time, bring a book, take a nap, snap some pics, or enjoy the company of a friendly conversation or warm embrace of a loved one. parking might be a bit pricey, 10+, so good luck finding a meter on the street.
So my true take on this wanna be central park is that its a mess. This place could be so much nicer if the city took the time to know what people wanted and why they use this park. The only nice part is the public gardens and even they are lacking. The ponds, fountains and fields are a disaster and dirty. There is trash all over the place and you cant sit down on the grass without fear of dog crap or geese crap. This place used to be a little nicer but has gone way down hill. It is surrounded by some of the nicest neighborhoods, only to look like a second rate city park. Fix it up Mennino seeing you are sucking our tax dollars as it is.

the common has never sat right with me ever since I have moved up here. Just something about it is blah. Maybe it is the homeless people that sing to you about crack during your hour of 'peace' away from the office. Maybe?
I feel that the common could be so nice if the the city spend a little bit of time and money on it, atleast the area from Park street to Bolyson. That is one of the busiest areas during the day and night and it always is the messiest. Yes, people = mess but with that many people going through or by (a la duck boat) then shouldn't it be cleaned!
I loved this park. It's never crazy crowded, even with all of the tourists, and there's always a spot you can lie down and relax at. The swan boats on the lake were cool, and the willows gave the whole park a stunning effect. Very tame English garden look to it.
Boston Common is a must stop for and tourist. I usually walk across the Common on my way to the Public Garden. the common has alot more room to play sports and whatnot than the Garden. Here you will find vendors selling Boston trinkets and whatnot. There are some very nice spots to relax under tress on a nice summer afternoon. Ahh...good times.

Remember that horrible show "Boston Common"? Neither do I and this place could join the ranks. I was here in winter so I admit I will need to experience in the summer.
Maybe I'm comparing it to Central Park, maybe everything to do wasn't there that day. I enjoyed the old buildings around it. I enjoyed all the coffeeshops and the sweatshirt guy, but i was expecting more. Not many people to watch, really not much to do.
I did walk around for a bit to see the sites, maybe I wanted something to grab me. Nothing did. Again, I came from Central Park the previous day, so maybe I need to do solo.
The colors of summer make me love you. The history off to the side and unknown history to most makes me come back and visit. I enjoy the commons, with the different events and singers throughout. i enjoy the rantings of people, the college students drinking, or the screaming child with the angery mother. To me it's a typical park that just a nice place to sit on a sunny day, grab a hot dog and enjoy. The only thing that could make it better would be better kept lawn so when I sit, I don't stand up with dirt all over due to my forgetfulness of a blanket.
I CHASED A SQUIRREL
to the tune of "I Kissed a Girl" by Katy Perry
It was never the rodent i planned
Not my intention
I got so brave, camera in hand
lost my discretion
It's not what, I'm used to
Just want to chase you on
I'm curious, for you
caught my attention...
I chased a squirrel and I liked it
in the wind his mangy tail flicked
I chased a squirrel just to try it
I hope my best friend don't mind it
it felt so wrong
it felt so right
don't mean i caught him, right?
I chased a squirrel and I liked it
i liked it...

when i was in boston, i've been around and through here during both day and night.
its an urban park. thus its definitely not the cleanest. a lot of homeless people make this place their home. plenty of shady characters loitering around
the frog pond is located here too. But when the rink isnt open, there isnt much people around to people watch
its too exposed to the winter wind. when the wind is on its top game, it whips you right in the face. its brutal.
its in a good location where your just surrounded by buildings so its a nice place to jog and get away from the urban sprawl

It's a great public park, but not the best there is. It's on the small side for city parks I've been too, but it's well kept with many things to do. You can:
Play in the fountain, nap, run, play frisbee, picnic, play with puppies, take a boat ride, smooch with your significant other, etc. There isn't a lot to do, but it's a nice way to spend a couple hours in a relaxing day.
There are lots of hobos, and I dislike that it feels more like a front yard in the middle of the city. I much prefer Golden Gate Park, where the tall trees completely seclude it from everything around so you forget you're in the middle of a major metropolitan area for a while.
Also, don't go after dark. Had to walk through there in the evening with a group of people one time. It's pretty sketchy at night.

I was trying to walk back from the ICA to my hotel near MGH. I became completely turned around and ended up at Boston Common. It was an overcast Saturday afternoon and for a few blocks I just tried to (unsuccessfully) loosen the leaves that were stuck to the bottom of my boots. Stopping for a moment, I noticed a group of people playing some kind of game. At first I assumed it was flag football or soccer, but the enthusiastic cheers caught my attention. What did I see?
It was a freaking QUIDDITCH Match.
I stayed for a few minutes watching and then the Snitch ran by me. Hehe. That in and of itself gives Boston Common four stars.
(Video of the match I saw here: http://www.youtube.com...)
When I'm feeling down and listless, I think back to a pleasant memory...
I spent my first day in Boston hiking around the city, from Back Bay Fens up to the North End and through all the nooks and alleys of downtown. Bogged by the relentlessly muggy heat, I took a break and crashed on the cool grass in Boston Common. And as I lay there, I could more readily take in the sound of the people passing, the girl singing at the end of the road with her guitar, and the laughter of children playing in the pool on the other side of the hill. I fell asleep, and felt more connected to the earth than ever. And I couldn't believe I was actually there, filled with this strange tingling sensation in the depths of my core. I knew I had made it, and nothing could ever make me leave...
...except maybe the ants in my pants.

This is one of the best parks I have ever been to. Immaculately kept park. Nice haven in the city with plenty of them. The Swan boats are not here. Nor is the pond. That's at Public Garden. Enjoy this common ground for what it is. Beautiful!
This is what a park should be like. Trees, grass, baseball fields, statues, fountains, brick walkways, all of the basics and more. A lot of fun events happen here as well. It's also in the middle of everything. It's within close walking distance of Downtown Crossing where a lot of nice businesses are, and within reasonable walking distance of the Pru and Newbury street if you don't mind taking a bit of a longer yet scenic and pleasant stroll. There's also lots of historical stuff nearby like a cemetery where some Revolutionary War guys are buried and some old libraries and churches where this or that important document was signed and/or is stored and where this or that important meeting happened. There's also the statehouse nearby if you're interested in politics and such. You also have the Frog Pond for skating in the wintertime, which I've never done (I'd fall and split my head open, probably), but lots of people I know have.
Lots of people have pointed out that it IS NOT THE SAME as the Public Gardens, which is true, but they're very close to eachother and should be experienced together during the spring, summer, or autumn.
All and all, a nice place to relax and be in nature a bit without having to leave the comforts of urban living behind at all. It's easy to get to, and around, and it's all pretty and nice just to soak in. As some have mentioned, there're quite a few homeless people around, which can be a bit of a drag, but if you live in a city you should be used to that anyway. If you're a tourist from out in the country somewhere and have never seen a homeless person before, keep this in mind: They don't bite. Either give them a little change or food and move on, or ignore them. They're not going to hurt you. The worst they'll do is call you greedy or something, but I'm sure you'll get over it.
The common is nice to walk through, not as nice as the garden but this is more of a recreational park where you sit ont he grass and play sports.
I also spotted mel gibson here the other day filming a movie, then I saw the food table and was more excited.
to the east is downtown xing/ park st area. to the west I believe is charles st, to the south is boylston st/emerson and to the north is beacon hill.
I like to walk through here on my way home from work, its relaxing and not usually too packed. Oh this is where a lot of the homeless live, so watch where you step!
I love it here.
3rd stop of my birthday fun was here. Where a friend and I sat and had some dessert and enjoyed the weather.
You can sit in the sun, in the shade or walk around. I've even had some great picnics here and once a month we have our Dachshund meetup.

I have never see the Common in the summer, but after the last major snow storm we had, the Bolyston side of the Common was pretty nice. No bums, squirrels, knife-fights, were to be seen. Just sweet Asian families and their babes.
I enjoyed a forbidden Char Sui Bao and people watched in this park, before going across the street to see Sweeney Todd.
I can see how it could be seen as sketch, however. The last time I went to a movie at Loews, we got out late, and my friend wanted to look at the lights in the park. We only walked to the gazebo, but I was ready to make a bolt for the station. Otherwise, during the day it was peaceful. In fact, my current photo was taken while eating said Char Sui Bao and sitting in the Common!

Poor Boston Common--your really quite nice and practical, but it must be hard having your prettier, younger sister (the Public Garden) sat right next to you all the time, showing you up. Hey, you've got a great personality! You're really good with kids with that whole frog pond and baseball diamond thing going on. You've got so many cool politicians and musicians stopping by your gazebo all the time. You're so welcoming with that tourist information center and your wide expanses that are good for both hoards of local workers having their lunch or big events like Shakespeare on the Park, fireworks on New Year's Eve, and gay pride parades. The Public Garden may be near the T, but you're actually a T stop *and* you've got the cheapest parking lot downtown underneath! Sure, the Public Garden is *really pretty* and easy to spend a day with, but she's not as gregarious and open minded as you. You even let the homeless camp out in you at night! You're the best! Honest!
Unfortunately the park is less interesting in the winter, although if the ice rink is open, you can watch that for a while. Play this fun game--watch the various couples skating together and try to identify at what stage of the relationship they are. You will see the whole gamut--exasperation, chivalry, tomfoolery, boredom, ebullience, shyness, terror, joy. When I spy a cute young twosome who are obviously on date #2 or 3, and the girl has a face full of smiles at all times, and the guy is being gallant and humorous and snapping photographs of them, I know that he is going to get some action later that night, and it makes me so happy.

Sure, as a city park it is fairly straightforward and unspectacular. But the Common has more… Read more »
The squirrels here might be more friendly than most Boston locals. One got so close when I was sitting on the grass working, I could have taken a photo of it with iSight.
Just a tip, I usually hang out towards the Boylston or Charles side as the vagrants dominate near the Park Street T and I'm not always amused by nonsensical babble but I always know where to go to deposit some change and empty bottles.
On warm days, I'm thankful for this park, however sparse the grass and barren the trees may be. There are always empty benches and a patch of green. And so many great rallies and festivals have taken place here. Need I recount the story of Hemp Fest during college where I smoked so much for hours on end that when I stood up my vision went from white, purple and yellow, to black and white, finally to totally black and I fell over? Oh the memories!

The Boston Common! It's the dirty place with no buildings on it, sortof in the middle. If you were wondering. With the old Asian people doing some kind of tai chi in the mornings, and hippies in arrhythmic drum circles in the afternoon. It gets four stars instead of five because have you ever tried to eat a sandwich there? The pigeons would like some of your sandwich. No, really, they want some right now. Oh, you're not feeling generous today? That's okay; the pigeons are just as happy eating your foot. How's that feel? Hurts, doesn't it? Maybe you're starting to reconsider your attitude toward sandwich-sharing. Yeah, they thought so.
Here are some things you can enjoy on the Boston Common:
- The playground has this sensor plate - it's not always on, just when it's hot out - that you can step on, and a geyser squirts up a few feet away. Since there's no earthly purpose for this other than to ambush little children and make them cry, this gets two thumbs up from me.
- There's a big concrete puddle right in the middle full of pee. They call it the duck pond, but there are no ducks in it. Just pee. I dare you to go in it. Ha, I knew you wouldn't. Wuss.
- Mike the homeless guy who hangs out near Park Street is really cool. He's my favorite homeless guy in Boston. He's the shrimpy Black guy with a beard and a puffy green jacket. You can hang out and chat with him for a couple of minutes, and tomorrow he'll remember you and call you Uncle, which is a weird thing to call a dude twenty years younger than him but whatever. If you're going to Dunkin Donuts, he takes a little cream and a whole lot of sugar in his coffee.
- There are swan boats, which are just like normal boats except they got wooden swans on 'em. I don't know why that's supposed to be cool; I have met swans, and they're assholes. Filthy, ill-tempered brutes that run at you with their wings out making this horrible Skeksi noise. If there's a hell, it's full of swans. And hippies with drums.
Final tally: Making kids cry, +5; hippies, -2; pigeons, -6; not having buildings, +10; Pee puddle, -2; Mike the homeless guy, +5; Swans, -4. That makes four, or something like it. Not too shabby.

What's with all the junkies, crackheads, drunks and freaks? This is the best public park in America but what the fuck? The BPD can take a day off from chasing the murderers in D-town and get the scumbags out of the park. I remember the good old days when they could throw them in the paddy wagon and dump them in Cambridge.
Damn the Constitution! Junkies are taking over the area . Someone should pass out Valium then they could sleep and stop bothering all us people who know how to do drugs in moderation. Seriously meet me there and whoever spots the most wins. It's like a George A. Romero movie.

I. Am. The. Squirrel. Whisperer.
Seriously. I have this brown bag and they think it's a giant nut so they follow me around. Well, can you blame them? They're stupid! They can't even find their own nuts in the ground. Of course they would think a bag from Burlington Coat Factory (more than just great coats) is the alpha and the omega of all nuts. Although I once believed they were all in SAG. They were just way too sassy to not have contracts. Not to mention the pigeons. They must be in Actors Equity. That one fat king pigeon with one leg? He's very Marlon Brando. No? You're right.. I think he was in SAG....
I digress. Boston Common.. you were my campus while I was in college. The athletic kids would play soccer or kickball on your fields.. the artsy kids would do spontaneous theater on your walkways or hang out when there was Shakespeare on the Common.. the stoners/hippies would hang out on top of that random hill in the middle and play their guitars.. the clique girls would have picnics and bake themselves on the patch near Charles Street.. and the dork charity organizers like me would go on walks around you to raise money (Light the Night).
And oh God are you pretty when the trees have flower blooms/cherry blossoms. I got nothing but love for you baby. Lemme know who's bothering you.. I'll go ninja on their tuckuses..
PS - Thanks for the fun times at the Frog Pond/ice skating.

Things I've done on Boston Common:
* Enjoy the fresh air and people watching
* Show up to join a random pillow fighting mob
* Stroll with visiting family/friends many times
* Frolic with my kids around Frog Pond
* Start & end a Freedom Trail walk
* Discuss the current state of our country as compares to the state 225 years ago with a guy dressed as a patriot
* Bought a "Boston" sweatshirt with a shivering historian visiting from Hiroshima
Absolutely one of the better open spaces in a large urban area I've been to.

Having spent three days in conference mode, I was eager to let loose, kick back, and explore Boston on my own. My travels took me immediately through the downtown area and I ambled through Boston Common, which looked even greener in my eyes in light fo the crisp, cold early December air. It reminded me a lot of Russell Square in London, and seemed even more indicative of the fact that Southern California was just simply not built on the same lines.
I found myself darting through the Common multiple times on those two days to myself, when I was heading to check out the Park Street Church or the graves at Granary, or when I was trudging back, exhausted but overjoyed, to my hotel.
I had to laugh to myself as I passed the ice rink in the commons, as I watched Bostonians, surrounded by history, slide across teh frozen surface to the jarring sounds of Culture Club's "Church of the Poison Mind." How odd.
On my last hour to myself in Boston before I had to pack to leave, I put my headphones in, clicked my iPod onto shuffle, and walked around the beautiful green spaces, occasionally glancing up at statuary and history all around me.
Like magic, my iPod shuffled on over to Regina Spektor's song, "Us," a haunting piano melody about love and its immortality, and I couldnt' resist humming along as she sang and I looked up at the stone and metal faces surrounding me:
"They made a statue of us
And it put it on a mountain top
Now tourists come and stare at us
Blow bubbles with their gum
Take photographs for fun, for fun
They made a statue of us
They made a statue of us
The tourists come and stare at us
The sculptor's mama sends regards
They made a statue of us
They made a statue of us
Our noses have begun to rust
We're living in a den of thieves
Rummaging for answers in the pages
Were living in a den of thieves"
Then, forgetting what a huge nerd I looked like, I raised my hands wide and just ran through the common on a bright Sunday morning to the Regina Spektor piano, and reflected on the amazing conference and awesome visit Boston had been for me. With tears formign on the corners of my eyes I smiled and walked home, the last strains of the song dying as I left the wide green space and its stony sentries for another day.

One of my favorite scenes since moving to Boston: a gay pride march, a group of Christian proselytizers, and the tour guides dressed up in historical garb, all accidentally converging on the same spot at once...
Seriously though, the common is great--when i used to teach night school I'd sit and review my lessons just as the sun was going down--being out on the common helped me relax and breathe out the anxieties of my day job before heading off to "expand and enlighten the minds" of my students.
Also a great place for taking walks--Rob and I have gotten lost wandering around in the common a few times--I love it--a great accidental "date."

Love it love it love it
there are many reasons to love this patch of land
Here are just a few.
1)History: There is so much history in the common, one only needs to turn around and look. the St Gaudens tribute to the Mass 54th, the state house, even the Park street station itself is historically significant.
2) The Frog Pond: Always fun, and i had a really great date there once.
3)The Playground: My 8 year old Liam, love this playground. It's big, fun, and safe.
4)Shakspeare on the common: Probably one of the best things Boston has to offer in the summer. If you have not gone yet, please check it out.

I have a tendency to block out things I don't want to see. So all the junkies, crackheads, and drunks at Boston Common were invisible to me.
All I remember is the well manicured lawns, the beautiful flowerbeds, the lake with swan boats and ducks, lots of trees with generous shade from the hot sun, and happy families sitting on blankets having a picnic. Oh yea, and the cute bronze duckling statues from 'Make Way for Ducklings.'
In the winter, I remember twinkling lights everywhere, lovers walking arm and arm, and happy skaters ice skating at Frog Pond.
A lovely park in an interesting city.
