I have been going to this gym now for 8 months after reading its great reviews.  I came here for a great in your face workout and that is exactly what I got.  This is a no frills, no excuses, no nonsense gym.  The kind of place that serious people who are serious about getting in shape come to.
The less than 5 star reviews here are ridiculous. The gym smells bad? No AC? Come on, if you wanted a fancy, pampered workout go somewhere else where you won't sweat. Real fitness creates real results and this is the place for it. You want a place with AC and smells great, go to a boutique.  You want a real workout come here. Nothing less than a 5 star workout at Boston Boxing and Fitness

I bought a bloomspot  coupon for this place along with 3 others. It was for 5 sessions and we only ended up using 4 of them.

So to describe this place -- it's a GYM, more like a guy gym. The equipment is a bit old and seemed a bit outdated. But they work. There are quite a few women boxers there, beginners to professional, which is nice.

It was awkward the very first time, getting used to working out. The workout was really good. They really make you work the hour and half you're there. Everything from cadio to strength-building. You're sweating within 10 minutes and you won't stop until you're done.

The staff are friendly and stern. They really push you to do more and at the same time, watch out for you in case you're about to faint like i did... lol.

I would give this place a 4 star if it doesn't smell so much in there, especially when there is so much sweat going around. Mind you, every time you're done using the staff you spray and wipe the stuff down but it still reeks of BO.

I attended the Women's Only Boxing class yesterday and had my ass handed to me...over and over and over. Jump ropes, kettle bells, weight circuit, ring-side push ups and mountain climbers...by the time I actually put on gloves and got into the ring, I was bright red and huffing and puffing like a 400 lb asthmatic. My punches could have been blocked by a kitten.

Today, I'm sitting on my couch...crying at the mere thought of having to move or God forbid, use the bathroom (I don't have the strength to stand back up...don't judge!)

I will be back - because it was the best $15 I've spent in a long time. It's a real workout - using your own body and bringing you to the edge of your limits!

Want to know the secret to rock hard flat abs? I now know, thanks to John (very nice instructor) You? Well, you are going to have to get your ass to this joint and take a class. If you are nice, he'll tell you  at the end.

I have to agree with Jessika on all counts.  I got a bit lost making my way on foot which is quite sad seeing as though the properties I work with were within a mile radius. Leave it to ME to still get lost. While the area isn't bad at all, it just is a little sketchy due to some peeps.  I still was nervous getting lost in the back streets. It is among many Redemption Center and old warehouses and buildings off Cambridge Street in Allston. I did get lost (thank to map quest) but still managed to make it. Hell, I was out of breath just trying to find my way there .  I am glad I didn't turn around and go home as I planned.

So I take it the signs of a good workout is if you can't get out of bed-not because I am tired, but I literally can't move. As I am walking around it is getting better, but the workout was intense and lasted 1 1/2 hours.

I knew my ass was in trouble when we started to jump rope and I only made it every four jumps and tripped over my rope. 10 minutes of that and I was feelin a fool. What happened to my kick ass moves in the school yard?
Next, we were split into two groups and we did lunges, push ups, squats, things with a ball I am sure have a name but I have no clue, .....got in the ring and learned technique..than we partnered up and put on some gloves and hit up the bags. I kinda felt like Rocky.....kinda.

After that we had what seemed like an endless ab workout.  After John telling us that while we did sets of 20, they are really supposed to go up to 100 or something like that, I felt silly.  Wha?

Some points to note, like Jessika said, it is in one big open area...so there are other people able to view you workout. I think some people were standing and watching for amusement, but I was in a such a daze it didn't bother me.  Not the newest and greatest equipment, but that doesn't matter. They utilize every inch of the space and every single thing in there to get you into shape.  From chairs, to ropes, to the ring.  They get 'er done. Oh...the owner, Ed, was super nice. Though he was militant when we worked out with him while   doing the boot camp style portion, he ended up being a sweetheart and actually gave us a great price on the class. I think he really cares-even when we were  working with another instructor he was keeping an eye and cheering for us...ah er, yellin at us to "Move it!"...in a good way.

Not only was I impressed with other Yelper's skills and endurance, but it was more fun being in a group. I guess, when you have people go drill sergeant on your ass, it just feels good knowing you are not alone.

Thanks Chere for organizing an awesome class! The first of many more to get my butt into shape woot! Can't wait for next week - if I can move by than.

    Great ass-kicking workout: CHECK plus
SUPER sore the next day: definite check
Good coaching and group chemistry: CHECK (makes you work harder)

    Going back again?  DEFINITELY

    A few things to note:
    1) Get there early for parking.  It is a bit of a dodgy area, so don't leave anything in your car.

    2) Bring your own gloves.

    3) Know that you will get a great workout, but that you a welcome to do what you can.  There are all different levels, and you are encouraged to work hard but do your own thing.

    4) Don't expect to be knocked out in the ring.  Not that kind of workout.  But don't expect this to be kickboxing.  Not even close.

    5) Bring hand sanitizer.  This place is not Healthworks - let's be honest.

Seriously, why would you ever waste money on a personal trainer when, for just $15 you get an hour and a half of absolute ass whopping??

It's the next day after my first class at Boston Boxing and I can't walk. I don't remember being this sore. Ever!

It was an hour and a half of jumping jacks, ab work outs, weight training, and periodic moments of "I don't see you doing push ups new girl!"

Sore sore sore. I can't wait for a time when I can walk out of the house. Seriously. I can't get down stairs. I think I need to work out before taking another class!

You want to work out?  You got it!

DISCLAIMER:  If you're looking for a sexy, chromed-out, look-at-me, chi chi spot, then I highly suggest you look elsewhere.  Anyone else...step right up!

DISCLAIMER 2:  I moved out of town before they relocated to their new location, so I cannot speak to the new digs.

If you're looking to see what all the fuss is about with boxing and mixed martial arts workouts and aren't afraid to sweat through your socks, then I highly recommend Boston Boxing and Fitness!    Since walking through the door, Ed, John, Kenny and their complement of trainers were nothing but encouraging, supportive and instructional.   They understand not everyone is vying for Gold Gloves or going pro, but just want a good workout and learn a few things about the sweet science.

The Rugg Road facility can best be described as a true blue "Gym".  No frills, no thrills and the focus of the place is to work.   The classic rock/metal soundtrack is a reminder that pilates and spin classes should be sought elsewhere.   It's a mixture of high schoolers, college students, Olympic hopefuls and averages Joes trying to get into shape.

I never walked in there feeling self-conscious that I wasn't a prize fighter or couldn't do the work.   The entire staff is supportive of whatever it is you want or can do and are always around to lend a hand or join you in some of your workout.  Ed the owner will help fashion a workout for you that speaks to your current conditioning and shakes it up to keep the workout fresh.   He's always moving around the gym, simultaneously offering advice, suggesting new exercises and busting chops.

The services offered vary from general cardio & boxing workouts, conditioning/strength/agility classes and boxing techniques on the heavy bag, mitts and double end bag.  For those looking to take it up a notch there is team training and sparring.

Rates are discounted, based on the length of membership and Ed's always sending emails out, offering attractive packaging for renewals.  If you've got a health insurance credit from your provider,  an annual membership ends up costing something like 30 bucks a month!

I'm giving BB&F 4 out of 5 stars solely on the hours.  Because most of the crew works other jobs or volunteer time, they keep after work hours and only Saturdays, for weekend times.   If they can staff up and meet daytime needs and Sundays, they are 5 stars easy.

Yay, for boxing!  This was the best workout I have ever had!

We had 10 minutes of jump rope, which I remember being MUCH easier when I was 7, and then a number of conditioning exercises with medicine balls and weights.

The trainers were hardcore, and they pushed us until we dropped.  John is especially great, so seek him out if you go there to train.  Big guy, can't miss him!

After the conditioning (and the part where I swear I was about to die) we got to actually practice some stances and a little boxing.  It was amazing fun and I can't wait to go back there again!

Yeah, the place was more of a no-nonsense club, but that is what I was expecting.  I wasn't looking for Healthworks, because then I would have  felt self-conscious.

    Five stars --- fo' sho!

I got my ass kicked.....and I LIKED it!

Ok so this place is not the prettiest, but honestly, I wasn't expecting it to be like that.  The "locker" room is probably the size of my hallway and there are tiny tiny lockers, next time I'll have to remember to bring a lock lol.

The people there are pretty hard core.  I saw some people that were in amazing shape, and I really really really want to be one of those people.  The people that work there are SUPER nice, and some of them are pretty easy to look at too..hehe.  They were very drill sergeant like but at least they had a sense of humor about it.

Seriously though, I have NEVER had a better work out.  I mean, the first 10 minutes are jump roping.  They give you a TOTAL body workout  and you can see that the more experience you are, you still getyour ass kicked with what they throw at you.

Major major extra points for knocking off an additional $2.00 off the already reduced price we got.  Ed and John are the BOMB! We were all incredibly impressed and incredibly sore, but it's so worth it.  John mentioned that he came here 2 times a week and lost 110lbs!! If I had extra money, I would sooooooooo join this place in a heartbeat.  The place looks intimidating, but the people are so nice, funny and AMAZING.  Just proof that looks can be deceiving. Just one other thing, a couple of the others were saying that it's sketchy, but I basically walk here all the time, and it's no big deal.  You just gotta STAY ALERT!

After missing one Yelp Workout Club session after another because of my work schedule, I was really excited to be able to get back into the swing of it, and the Boston Boxing class was just the reintroduction I needed.

As boxing gyms go, this place is remarkably clean, from the bathroom to the tiny changing rooms and the water bubbler.   It doesn't really smell of the man sweat the way you might expect.  As I woman, I felt perfectly comfortable there even though there were plenty of guys around; it wasn't some crazy testosterone-charged joint you might be afraid to go to if you have lady lumps.  (If you're the least bit concerned, there are women-only classes!)

The class itself is an ass-kicker in the best way possible.  The workout is effective yet simple: jump rope, stretch, upper body work with medicine balls/kettle bells/hand weights, plyometrics, bag/ball work, and abs.  Rests are built into the workout, and you are constantly reminded to pace yourself, breath, and drink water.  I'm sore today, but it's a good, *earned* pain, and I'm still mobile enough to do housework and get around.

Many thanks to John for a great class, and to Chere for setting it up!  I'm hoping the boxing class is added to the regular Yelp Workout Club rotation, and I might try to hit some of the classes on my own.

Before the workout: "Oh yeah! I'm gonna kick some butt!"

First half hour: "Oh man.. I'm sweating like a madman."

Second half hour: "Oh yeah! Hurts so goooooood.."

Last half hour: "Oh man.. can't throw punch.. boxing bag hitting me back.."

After the workout: "Hurts so..." and collapse.

It's the day after I tried out my first Women's Boxing Class and man, oh, man and am I SORE. Dear God, my body is STILL wiped out. An hour and half of weights and jumping rope and beating up a punching bag while dripping in sweat? Sounds like I met my goal: a damn good workout. It hurts... but it hurts oh so gooooooood.

Also, they're moving at the end of August to a better facility. I will definitely be following. I want to prove to Ken (one of the awesome trainers that was really patient with my newbie butt) that I'm not that much of a weakling. Gotta work on those pushups..

I have only been here once... and I'll tell you why.

    Ouuuuuuuuuuuuuch.

This isn't a fancy place, by any means. Sure its a lil stinky, but I came here to get down and dirty! A lil Million Dollar Bay-bay action! I went the womens class, but be warned, it doesn't mean there aren't dudes around. Its a small place.

Classes are a lil on the pricey side, $15 for walk in, and cheaper if you get a classes card. The guy, John? Mike? Tony? Something like that, very handsome, very motivating. I think the other coach was Randy. I felt like I was in boot camp, but in a GREAT way. They push you with smiles, show you the right way to do the circuits.

Now, the reason why I haven't gone back? The class is about an hour and 45 minutes... i only made it 45 minutes and i had to leave. This is NOT a class for people looking for a good work out. This is for people looking for push themselves beyond their normal work out routines You need to already be working out 3 days a week on your OWN before you give this a go. This is NOT for out of shape people!! I will go back once I have established a good stamina and strength. I was sore immediately and for 4 days. NO joke. I couldn't as much as pick up my pen at work the next few days, or even walk without a limp...point taken!

You may also want to buy your own gloves, they're pretty cheap at city sports. Unless you dont mind using smelly sweaty boy gloves! Yuck!

It hurt in the beginning. The good kind of hurt...guess this makes me a masochist. After searching high and low for a women's boxing class I came across Boston Boxing on Yelp. I had my first class yesterday...and yes...it was good. I'll be back for that hurtin'.

At one point I would have traded off an ass whooping from my mother if I knew I was going to have that killer ab workout at the end...and my mother is that no-nonsense talk you to death in Spanish than beat you silly mother (you get the drift)...I had to lay down in the ring while four other people sparred and hold my legs up, put em down, do crunches...I did so much shiz I found my inner six pack deep beneath...

The facilities are fine...nothing luxurious but who the hell wants to box in a luxurious environment?! It exactly what a Boxing gym should look like..half bad/half good. There lots of women in the class at all levels (I wasn't the only one dying)...The trainers push you and push you...its tough love...but they're great. Ed and the other short guy were great...real tough looking beefcake NICE guys...lol.

Are you looking for a killer workout that will kick your ass?

Are you looking to burn fat and tone up quickly?

Did you ever have some interest in boxing and wanted to train?

If you answered yes to any of these questions than Boston Boxing and Fitness is a place to add to your workout rotation.  Please read on (or at least go to the bottom and leave me some luv! JK :)  )

We found this place back in February when The Yelp Workout Club was conceived.  The owner Eddie is so sarcastically loveable you can't help but feel like siblings the minute you meet him.  What I love about this place is it's no bullshit.  Nothing special on the inside, but the price is reasonable and you get a wicked workout.

All kinds of training programs are offered here.  Most people that come here are seriously looking to train and prepare for a fight.  With the expertise training of both Eddie and John dudes and chicks go there 3-5 times a week to prep for a boxing match.  But in addition to the training for boxers, they also offer a ladies (or in our case) a Yelpers class which is incredible.  It starts with 3 rounds of jump rope warm up, then stretching, then strength exercises, followed by pylometric circuits.  No.....the workout isn't done yet.  As a matter of fact, at this point you have been already working out for about an hour.  Next we donned on the famously stinky boxing gloves and did drills, followed by a mimmum of 200 stomach exercises.  Apparently the hard core trainees will do up to 800 in a work out.  Holy crap.  Altough this was 2 hours, the trainer John kept us motivated while we barely kept of asses from hitting te floor.  Just kidding it wasn't that bad.

What's even better than anything is the workout cost all of $10.  You can barely get 2 gallons of gas for that.  On top of that Eddie and John have grown to appreciate the Yelp squad and welcome us with open arms...er well more like with clever wit.  So if you are looking for a good workout, but can't fit in with one of the schedules ones, drop Eddie an email (check the website  - http://www.bostonboxin...) and he will no doubt work something out with you for a private session.

My boxing club just moved to rugg road (boston boxing), they offer women's classes which honestly offer the best workout I have had.  I used to teach spinning and the women's classes kick your ass in a good way.  You don't box other women though, but train and learn the techniques in a ring and do other exercises (plyometrics, drills, etc).  I love it!

Location is a little hard to find.  The building is tucked behind/between two buildings; so keep a lookout for it.

Great class; I went to the 'all women class' on Saturday.
I thought that I was in pretty good shape before this class.  My 4x-a-week running session didn't help me much.  You mostly rely on upper body strength for the majority of the class, but don't let this discourage you from trying this place out.  I'm really happy that I did because the class really pushed me to test my abilities.

The two guys, Charlie and John?, were extremely nice.  I'm definitely going back after I build up more strength.

Oh, and if you have boxing gloves, bring them.  If you don't have boxing gloves, they have latex gloves for you to slip on before putting on the boxing gloves.  I would also suggest that you bring hand-wraps too, if you have them.  It'll help with the boxing.
