This store will bleed your wallet dry. I saw its ad for snorkel gear rental at $1.50/day in a tourist magazine--this is for the outdated stuff (1950s panoramic mask, anyone?). Once you're lured in the store, the salespeople try to up sell the modern stuff that you can get at Walmart or rent here for five times the price. No, thank you!

Check out Brennecke's Beach Center instead.

Boss Frog's advertises that for $1.50 per day it will provide a "top quality panoramic mask" in a snorkeling package if you bring in their advertisement.

However, when I arrived at the Kapa'a Boss Frog's location with the ad in hand, I was told the $1.50 price actually applied to the snorkel package with the lowest quality mask of the three types of mask Boss Frog's rents, and that this mask was the oldest technology of the three.  I didn't need to be told the technology was old; it was quite obvious from a cursory glance.

I actually laughed out loud when I saw the mask, because if you're old enough to remember the TV show "Sea Hunt" that aired from 1958 to 1961, it's the type of mask Lloyd Bridges wore in the show-- a glass oval with black rubber.  I haven't seen a mask like this in decades, and didn't realize they were even still made.  It certainly wasn't a mask I would consider renting for a meaningful snorkeling experience.

I was told I would have to pay $5.00 per day to rent the package with the next higher quality mask, and $8.00 per day to rent the package with the highest quality mask.  Rather than the advertised price of $1.50 per day for a "top quality panoramic mask," therefore, I would have actually had to pay $8.00 per day for the store's top quality mask.

This from a company whose advertisement screams from the top of the page: "Boss Frog's snorkel alert: Don't be eaten alive!.. by high prices!"

Don't be eaten alive by this bait and switch-- go somewhere else.  I had a great experience with Seasport Divers down the street, where the man at the desk was honest, knowledgeable, cheerful, helpful, and very obviously genuinely concerned with making sure I had a good time snorkeling.... which I did.

We had a great experience with Boss Frog's when we rented our snorkel equipment and beach chairs.  Like some of the other reviewers, we were originally thinking about going to Snorkel Bob's but saw an ad for Boss Frog's and decided to try them instead.

I don't agree with one of the other reviewers about the "bait and switch".  A bait and switch is if a business advertises a product for a really low price, and then when you get there, they tell you that it's unavailable hoping that you'll buy up to a more expensive product.  It's true that the Boss Frog's ad says you can rent a complete snorkel package (snorkel, fins, bag, defogger) for $1.50/day.  Once you get there, you're told that the $1.50 gets you the most basic snorkel equipment.  They advise you to buy up to the better snorkel package, but you do still have the option of purchasing the basic package, if you want.  So I want to emphasize that you do have a choice.

We went for the $8/day "best" package for 2 days, which we thought was reasonable for each 24 hour period.

We found the equipment to be clean and functioning properly.  I forgot to take the vial of defogger the first day, and when I stopped by to pick another one up the next day, no questions were asked and I was given one right away.

Overall, a great experience with no complaints whatsoever.

We had originally wanted to get our snorkel equipment at Snorkel Bob's but accidentally wandered into Boss Frog's for some reason (it was early). I had wanted to go to Snorkel Bob's because of the Snorkel Bob Foundation, which is so great because they help protect coral reefs and marine life!

Anyway, the women working were super helpful and convinced us to rent the most expensive snorkel equipment which was AWESOME stuff and allowed us to have a great experience snorkeling on Kaua'i without getting much water in our nose, eyes, and mouth!

The woman helping us suggested we get an underwater camera for around $55 for a week and I was a little hesitant at first. We had brought our own digital camera and didn't foresee taking pictures underwater. BUT we ended up getting it and were SO glad we did! It was easy to use and such an awesome camera (so much better than ours). You are limited to a certain amount of pictures but you better believe that we took advantage of the 880 pictures you can take!

All in all, we had a great experience with Boss Frog's! They were very helpful and guided us to the right equipment.

I still think next time we're in Kaua'i we'll try out Snorkel Bob's, again, because of the foundation (we like that our some of our money will go towards something good) but Boss Frog's was still good and I recommend them.

We have always rented our snorkel equipment when we travel to the islands. We rented our equipment from Jordan down at the Boss Frog's near Poi'pu Beach but returned everything at the Boss Frog's in Kappa since this was closer to where we were staying. This was a big perk from us as we wanted to enjoy our time in Kauai and not spending our time running from location to  location.

From start to finish we had a great experience. When renting all of our equipment is was very quick and great customer service. We also decided to rent an underwater camera which included video. We rented everything for 24 hours but we never felt rushed to get everything back. I never felt pressured to rent anything specific and felt the pricing was a great deal.

When we returned all of our stuff the next day in Kapaa, there CD burner was down. They were very apologjetic and promised to get me the CD's the next day. They also offered to mail them to me if there was any issue but there wasn't. We had everything for about 30 hours verses the 24 hours and we were charged.

When we return to the islands we will be renting our snorkel gear again from Boss Frog's.

Most of the employees here are VERY helpful. One was kinda off. She was kinda stoney lol. But other than that I was pretty happy with the service. Just wish they had smaller beach cruises for the more petite crowd!!

I agree with the other Yelpers.  In terms of equipment and customer service, Snorkel Bob's is far superior.

    Will not be back

First of all, the ad is a lie! They claim to rent quality snorkel gear for $1.50 a week but that's just to get you in the door. The only ones they rent for $1.50 old diver masks that only fit men, not women or children.
Second the SERVICE at this LOCATION was COMPLETELY AWFUL!!!
Standby for the disgruntled employees that work there. LAZY, UNHAPPY, SARCASTIC, AND DOWNRIGHT RUDE! My husband, myself and mother in-law went in on three separate occasions, to rent, and return etc., and they were treated very poorly each time by 3 different employees. One older guy yelled at my husband for asking where he'd like him to put the snorkel gear, He said, " I DON"T NEED THAT STUFF THERE!!" He didn't bother to get his butt up from the back corner he was in,  and told my husband where to go put snorkel gear and bag and sort stuff, never coming out. (there was no other customers in the store at the time) I can go on about the old cranky  blond woman and the other older gentlemen, but it takes too much room!
We suggest if you must go to Boss's the one in Poipu was much better as far as customer service.

Price was ok, equipment was good but not better than other places for same price. To give you an idea, I stayed at the Marriott Waiohai and the snorkel stuff was the same price right on the beach.

Probably a 4 1/2 rounded up.  A half star taken away because the ad isn't exactly bait & switch, but the cheap snorkel equipment is panned as garbage once you go in the store (and it is garbage unless you walk out of a 1950's time machine directly into the store).  We upgraded to much better gear, at a much higher cost.  A little expensive, but it was very good stuff.  Also, the staff had really good and specific recommendations for where the best (and least crowded) places were to snorkel.  After going, they obviously had been to these places and experienced these things- because the info they gave us was right on the money.
Where they were really helpful was in booking a Na Pali boat tour.  They had good information about boat companies, and were able to book my wife and I a 2 for 1 deal.  It saved us tons of money, and it was a great boat tour as well.  Again, they knew what they were talking about.  Cheap postcards as well, our kids appreciated that.  Rock on, Boss Frog's!

So you see an ad in the local tour guides promoting a $9 weekly rental for snorkel gear. You think "great!". You go in and find out it's essentially a bait-and-switch. The $9 gets you what the store clerk calls "Jacques Cousteau" gear, calling it the worst they have. To get decent stuff it's $20 for the week. Which isn't a bad price. It's just a deceptive way to get you there. Add to that when you return it the clerk that day seems to care less that you're there, preferring instead to talk to the other folks in the store about how she married her scuba instructor.

Went here with a buddy. Compared to the service at Snorkel Bob's, this place blows. The lazy guy at the counter directed me to pick out my own gear from the pile of flippers. Neither did he provide any advice about where to go. I'd expect a litte more customer service than that. Skip this place and go to Bob's.

Okay we got suckered into a timeshare presentation so we can get 2 tours with a promo 2 for 1. And it did work though. However twice Boss Frog's forgot to give us our voucher. So when we got to one of the tours we picked, they had to make some phone calls to verify that we did pay Boss Frog's. Also, we almost missed our boat tour because Boss Frog's forgot to fax my name over, so my name wasn't even on the list. Even though she took my credit card info.Again, they had to call them :( It was a hassle and embarassing because I felt like I was holding up the line...even worse, the tour itself!

I was in Kauai early March, 2011.  I have previously booked great cruise pkgs from Boss Frogs in Maui, so I thought I would check out the same chain in Kauai.  Boss Frogg was right outside of the hotel we were staying.  The store manager, Janet, is super helpful and friendly.  She patiently listened to our requirements, then matched up with a perfect cruise to the Na Pali coast.  She also arranged the rental of an underwater camera which took some amazing snorkeling pirctures and videos.
