On a rainy day in Maine, you can shop or eat. Since everyone and their mother seemed to be eating, there wasn't a spot to have breakfast (unless you waited an hour and a half) anywhere.
So it may look like your grandmother's house, but it serves a piping hot and QUICK (unlike every other establishment I frequented this weekend) breakfast. AND it was delish-iouso.
Breakfast burrito is where its at. Four ate (two drinking bloodies) for 41 bucks. I know bfast is cheap, but thats fantastic with a few drinks. WOuld I go here for a night out, no probably not, but solid food with solid service is fine by me to make my grumbling tummy happy. Right on Rt. 1, no parking issues ain't bad either... -

(3.50 stars) Two things will remain lodged in my mind regarding our stop at Bos'n's Landing. We were returning from a vacation in Maine. Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont had become fairly regular vacation destinations, in various combinations. This trip didn't see us traveling through very many of the little US 1 villages, and we missed the dockside lobster experiences of past vacations. As the car sped toward Freeport, we saw a cove and a restaurant on the cove. We pulled into a large gravel driveway still traveling at almost 50 mph, parked, and walked into an old home/inn sort of building. Looking for that genuine Maine coast experience, we opted for seating on the outdoor veranda, setting the stage for memory #2. The cove was beautiful at sunset, and the view toward the Atlantic was the type of thing that New England wall calendars are made of. We weren't alone, and apparently, weren't the hungriest beings on that veranda. From the time we sat down, the mosquitoes were everywhere, but the view was too breathtaking to retreat to the indoor dining room. We ate, and in turn, were eaten. The mosquitoes got the cheaper meal, but we got the better. Each of us selected various seafood platters built around steamed lobster; fisherman's platters, "lazy man's" platters of shelled lobster, fried crustacean mixes. Memory #1 was undeniably the lobster, extremely fresh, very sweet and succulent and cooked to perfection. There was still several hours of driving before we were back in New Jersey, and each of us scratched without complaint. Dinner at Bos'n's Landing was that good.

Recently, when cleaning my house, I found an old postcard that was a remnant from a previous vacation. A few years ago, we met friends in Toronto and we all drove to Maine to meet up with another friend who had just moved to York. Of course, my first time in Maine and what do I seek? LOBSTER ROLLS!!! because everyone I know tells me to "eat a lobster roll for them" like that is some new culinary "bon voyage".....or it's just the fatties' way of saying "wish they were there"....
So onto a neighborhood joint like Bos'n's Landing, which looked like it could be a rocking place on Friday pay-days. Big ol' gravel parking lot that could hold a few dozen Ford F250's. I do not even know how to pronounce this name with all the apostrophes''''''.
This was like the Maine version of Sizzler's....instead of steak specials, they had lobster specials. The decor was pretty tacky, dark wood and red vinyl with burnished gold streaks. I expected to see Maine mafia thugs in the corner booth (wait, is that George Bush?). There was a bar "hostess" with a platinum teased 'do (really!) who took orders for alcohol; the wench-y waitresses could not take or deliver drinks (maybe they were underage? or the bar hostess did not want to share tips).
Of course I ordered the "LOBSTER ROLL".....it was mayonaisse laden lobster salad stuff on a soft-ish white roll..... apparently this is what a lobster roll is all about. I was not impressed. I should have ordered a regular lobster....the neighboring table had these big monster crustaceans that spilled over the platters...wow! Meanwhile, my friend was rhapsodizing about his LOBSTER ROLL, sucking mayo juice from each little piggy finger. Oh, did I mention the crying and fighting siblings (my other friend's three kids) that accompanied our meal? I think that this was probably the most influencing memory of my meal at Bos'n's Landing......
Oh, the second star for this review is in honor of our young wench-y waitress. She was very very sweet and calmed down the screaming horrid little girl-spawn and kept the water glasses full. (I'm glad my friend lives 3000 miles away) -

I don't know what kind of expectations folks have for a place like this, but dangitall if this wasn't EXACTLY what I was expecting--in fact, I dare say, way, way better. This isn't the first time I've found myself accidentally crossing that green bridge into Maine, and since I now know that this place exists, it won't be the last.
It all started so innocently: my friend and I were on our way to the beach.
"Manchester-by-the-sea!" we cried, heading northbound, "and more specifically, exit 16 off 95, as per the online directions, ho!"
Well, it turns out that 95 and 128 split somewhere beyond my limited Boston grasp. Since we started at exit 32 and only went higher, and spent what seemed like an excessively long time speeding along 95 within the Massachusetts border, we hit New Hampshire, as you can imagine, expelling a sigh of relief.
"Well," we reasoned, "the numbers are bound to start over now, right? Come on, 16!"
Our relief lasted for, approximately, 30 seconds, as suddenly New Hampshire spat us out into that fateful green bridge welcoming us to Maine. We looked at each other. Change of plans! We'd go to Maine instead!
And what Maine experience, planned or not, is complete without lobster? I admit my lobster diet has been a little lean for the past number of years, being both poor and cheap and living in Boston, lobster mark-up capital of the world. So imagine my surprise when our waitress--who, by the by, was one of the nicest, friendliest, most comfortable waitresses I've ever had--informs me that I could have a 1.25 lb. lobster DINNER for $16.95.
"Get right out of town!" I exclaimed.
"Hon," she replied, "welcome to Maine!"
Okay, so the roll was Wonderbread, the salad was of the iceberg/Italian dressing variety, and all the condiments were out of single-serving plastic... The lobster was fantastic, friend's fish and chips were chock full of flaky haddock and nicely seasoned fries, and the entire atmosphere was just so homey and kitschy in a warmly authentic way, AND I paid $20 for a dinner that would have cost $45 at Legal Seafood. Eff that, Legal! Between this restaurant and the Kittery Outlets, I hope I accidentally find myself in Maine forever. -

This place definitely did not live up to my expectations. To start, the service was very no-frills. No "thank you", no smiling. They seat you, they take your order and they leave without warning and minimal conversation to the point of being rude.
The prices were tremendous. To give an example I got the Seafood platter with shrimp, haddock, clams, scallops and fries. This cost $20. Right down the street I have gotten the same platter at the Weathervane seafood restaurant, got nearly twice as much food compared to Bos'n's Landing and paid $5 less.
I guess you're paying for the atmosphere, which consists of wooden lobsters, ship wheels and flies. Lots of flies all over your table. No less than three flies were on my table, plate or me at any given time during my visit.
Just go to The Weathervane down the street. -
