Wow... the reviews of Bo's seem to be all over the place. Literally from  "best ever" to "worst ever" and everything in-between.

Well, i'm here to set the record straight... kind of.

I live within a 5 minute walking distance of this joint and have eaten everything on the menu there countless times. I can honestly say that EVERYONE is right: There have been times when i'm thinking, "wow, this is the best piece of meat I have ever put in my mouth"... and there have also been times, albeit rarely,  when I simply could not eat the food.

I'm not too sure what's up with this place. When they're on, they are fucking ON. (80% of the time.) When they're not, they're absolutely not. (20% of the time.) I have NEVER been to such a hit or miss restaurant in my life.

That said, I still go, usually for take out, hoping that they're "on" that night. I really love to support my local businesses, and besides, I feel the strange need to help Bo make the payments on his sick 745i.

Speaking of Bo, he's awesome. He's there at the crack of dawn cleaning up outside and working in the little garden out front all the time. I love seeing him (and his massive gray beard) in the morning - that always puts a smile on my face. It's obvious that he takes pride in the place and he obviously works hard at it.

I also love hearing the live music - from my front porch... it makes me hungry, that's for sure.

So, my advice... You shouldn't base your opinion on this place with just one visit. I'm telling you, if you had a bad experience before, give them another chance or 2. You're bound to get them on an "on" night and you'll finally understand why your East Bay friends have been raving about this place for so long.

Just cross your fingers.

Best little restaurant EVER!!

As a family owned business during a recession, I think they are doing a marvelous job at keeping up their service especially during these tough economic times - the food is always delish, and you can count on one of the owners to be there!  They also have changed their hours to be open all day, and not close between 2-5pm!

I have tasted a lot of BBQ, and I would pay premium prices to come to Bo's - a family owned establishment who serves locally grown produce, and organic meat that is TASTY - what else could you possible ask for!?

10 stars - if that even existed on Yelp!

Best BBQ in the area! All organic and all good! I'm a big fan of brisket and I've never had a bad batch. A must go place.

Food - 5
All their pork products are moist, juicy, tender, and flavorful.  The bone on the ribs can be pulled out easily and there's a nice smoke ring and flavor. If you never had organic meat, the flavors are just night and day.

Ambience - 5
Its a quaint setting with a huge fridge stocked with soft drinks, beer, and vino.  There's a cool old school sofa in the back and great place to go on a nice beautiful day and sit on the patio.

Came here with fam. one day and thought I was somewhere in a country ranch? Noob. But I had a rib plate combo and it was good but somehow in my inner-concious not enough magic was sparked by my taste buds to rate this 5 stars. It's close to 4. Sweet mashed potatoes are yummy and they got a good selection of root beer.

I recently returned to Bo's and was very disappointed.   It was a Friday night, the place was packed and the employees were drowning.  The ribs were short, I had 4 ribs in my box.  the brisket was soggy and they only gave me 1 side.  What happened to the sweet potato?

We have tried Bo's twice, both times for takeout, and sadly we thought it was some of the worst BBQ we have ever had.  I had brisket both times and my husband had the ribs.  We thought the sauce was so-so and the meat was dry and flavorless; it certainly did not taste as though it had beeen cooked on a smoker at all.  Buh-bye.

Lafayette (California) BBQ?

Isn't that an oxymoron?

You don't normally associate the upscale, mostly privileged, toney suburb of Lafayette, which is perhaps 99% white, with Barbecue of any kind. But that didn't stop Bo.

Actually, Bo's Barbecue had a difficult time getting established here over 10 years ago. The lily white residents didn't want a black man's BBQ restaurant smack dab in the middle of Lafayette. It might attract too many of "those people" coming through the Caldecott tunnel from Oakland. NIMBY was at work. (Not In My BackYard).

But it finally got established, and now it is quite popular. And what's not to like?

It is a decent size, with clean stainless steel family style tables inside, with ceiling fans, hanging plants, and black and white photos all over the walls of Blues and Jazz legends. There is even a family friendly leather sectional couch in the back. Outside there is a large patio, of at least 10 tables, with gas warmers for the cool evenings.

Most everything on the menu is $14.95 We ordered the short ribs. They give you a number and then shortly bring out your meals to your table. The short ribs were a large set of ribs, about 8 ribs, nicely charred and flavored. There is a scoop of potato salad, a nice green/red leaf on-the-plate salad, a quarter baguette of french bread, and a small cup of sweet BBQ Sauce. There's a lot of meat on them bones, too, as I couldn't finish and got a doggy bag.

To add to the backyard BBQ feel, there was a live blues band, the Frank Samuels Blues band to be exact. This was a quartet of old pros, with drums, base, piano and guitar, capable of playing a host of classics, with two of them singers. They play here on Saturdays.

You have to come here early, as they do not make an infinite amount of BBQ, so they can and do run out.

We had a finger lickin' good time, and when we licked those fingers clean, we could snap to the beat of the Blues as the setting sun poured golden light into this wonderful suburban oxymoron.

Agreed with Tim B below.  I also live in Lafayette and frequent this place.  From my experiences, when you come here you're going to get one of the following:  1) Amazing meat, possibly groovy live music, expensive drinks, or 2)  Expensive beef jerky, live music, expensive drinks.

The main difference between the GOOD days and the BAD days seems to be the moisture content of the meat.  On the good days the meat is moist, often falls apart if you harass it with a fork.  On the BAD days its just like beef jerky, and you end up with a plate full of it, which you paid a boat load for.  The one really bad time we had was when the girlfriend received one of the brisket jerky plates.  I felt so sorry for her...

So assuming you hit them on a good day, its well worth it.  But I'd hate to drive from out of town and show up on Jerky Night.

It gets a 3 for inconsistency, as previous yelpers described. It's odd: some nights the ribs are incredible; others, they're dry and untouchable.

Someone else may be able to confirm or deny, but my thinking is that Bo sold the place (the wait staff changed quite a bit) and has consulting/cooking agreement for a period of time (these usually are a year or two). This might be the reason for the inconsistency...

This place is WAY over rated. Everything literally reeks of liquid smoke. The food I've eatened there has been uniformly over cooked. Clearly what they serve is prepared on advance and held to be served. I get the sense that sometimes that holding period is a day or more.

Last Friday we ate at Bo's in Lafayette. It's a nice-looking place with stainless steel (?) tabletops. They had plenty of tables outside.

When you walk in you almost immediately hit a line (if it's not out the door). From that I gather it's a popular place. The line moved a bit slow though. They didn't have a kids menu, so I ordered a lunch-sized plate for my son and I ordered the 3-way combo to split with my daughter as it was supposed to feed two people. It comes with sides for two. The only sodas available are in a can ($2) or bottle ($3). Beers are also in a bottle (didn't look for cans). Fortunately I had my ATM card on me, because that's they only thing they accept besides cash. No credit cards. They deliver the food to your table.

We sat inside to listen to the blues band that was playing. It was very loud, I couldn't hear a word of what the waitress was trying to tell me when she brought out the food. At least the band was good.

Sides came out pretty quick. Not much write home about. I had a few bites of the salad (which had too much vinaigrette), but didn't touch the rest.

When the dinners came out shortly thereafter it was obvious I ordered way too much. The amount of meat on the 3-way dinner plate was enough to feed my family of four and still have leftovers! You get a selection of brisket, links, and ribs. The latter two didn't do much for me, but the brisket tasted excellent. The lunch-sized plate was closer to a "normal" serving size. Needless to say, we had plenty of leftovers, which we had to pack in a sheet of aluminum foil and a paper bag to take home.

If I make it back to Bo's we'll definitely order only one or two dinners to split and some extra sides. I don't think I'll be making a special trip though.

We heard a lot of good comments about this place so we gave it a try today.

This place is good but I wouldn't put it on my top 10 list for many reasons. Here are the reasons why:

1. There is no air conditioning inside, and outside, there are a ton of bees, wasps, and flies. My 4 year old daughter cried because several wasps landed on her plate of ribs- so we moved inside.

2. The drink selection is pretty minimal, and is pretty expensive since there are no fountain drinks. Minimum cost is $3 just for a soda.

3. The pork ribs here are huge- larger than any place I have ever been to. Usually places just give you the babyback- this place gives you the whole side. The downside? You get a lot of fat and cartilage pieces in your ribs when you eat which wouldn't happen if you just got babyback.

4. Normally we order a rack of babybacks, they don't have just babyback, so you have to order a full slab- this is pretty pricey at $26.95 per slab.

5. You have no choices for sides- it is always corn, salad, a piece of bread, and mashed potatoes with pickles.

6. The BBQ sauce is okay- nothing great. They don't give you very much either and they charge you for extra.

7. The service isn't very good. You order at the counter, sit down with a number, and someone brings it over. There was however a wonderful Asian woman server who kept checking in with us, and treated us very well, and that was the only reason we didn't just pack our food to go and eat at home.

8. They had a blues band playing when we were there. The band was talented but the sound was too loud. My husband couldn't hear me say anything.

9. Normally I like my ribs to have some seasoning on them- like a dry rub. The ribs here don't have much flavor in terms of that.

10. Some of the ribs were overcooked and hard to eat.   It's also cash or debit card only.

So overall, good but not great. I like Backforty Texas BBQ much better.

I had heard such good things about this place and was very disappointed. It seemed understaffed because it was hard for someone to just bring us water. We ordered the combo platter of meat to share (ribs, sausage and brisket)- 2 out of the 3 meats on our plate were lukewarm at best. I don't know about you, but I like my meat hot. At that point I would have settled for someone to microwave it back up for me- it was that bad. The brisket had a good flavor, but I just couldn't get over the fact that it was so cold. :(

Pardon me if my review mimics a Clint Eastwood spaghetti western, apropos.

The Good:
One of the best bbq briskets I have ever had, and, make no mistake on my credentials, I know my bbq brisket.  Moist, tender, big smoke ring - it has it all.  Good salad accompaniment, fresh, good vine grate.  The ribs are fall off the bone (the way a slow-cook, smoked piece of meat should be).  Acme bread=yums.  Good beer selection.

The Bad:
Service is very hit or miss.  Register folks sometimes seem like they just got back from a funeral home.  The music inside is sometimes too loud. Doesn't take phone orders.

The Ugly:
This is some friggin expensive bbq.  It takes a long time to make a good smoked bbq, I know, I can smell Bo making it everyday at 8:00a.m. on my way to work.  Still, the prices are the "east bay tax" - the market will bear it, so why not charge it?

Four stars for great brisket and great ribs.  Everything else, meh, maybe 2.5 stars.  Not the only reason, but, the cost of the meals here got me to buy an electric smoker.  Now MY brisket and ribs are the best I have ever had, bar none.  Bo is a cool dude, at lunch or when it is quiet in the shop, he'll chat ya up.

Put that in your oven and smoke it.

When you eat at Bo's, you feel like you've been transported to the Deep South rather than eating in the heart of Lafayette, CA. There's a blues band rocking away in the corner, a laid back feel-good vibe, and people of all ages and ethnicities. It's an awesome place to just sit back with friends and enjoy some good, down home barbecue.
I had the pork rib dinner here and I loved it. There was plenty of meat on the ribs and I liked that they served the sauce on the side so you can decide the amount of sauce you want on your ribs. I was a big fan of the tangy sweetness of the sauce and dipped everything on my plate in it, including the sides!
Only downside is that the music is a bit loud inside, so it's difficult to chat with your dining companions. But I hardly think that matters because you'll be too preoccupied with gnawing away at your meat to talk!

First of all, lemme tell you the bad stuff:
1) they close at random times... sometimes 8, sometimes 9... i dont get it
2) loud LOUD LOUD music on the inside.... super loud. You cant hear a thing. Can't even talk to your friends
3) cash only... sometimes...   other times they take ATM cards... then on some days they will accept credit cards if it's over $18 and under $30... WHAT?!?!!?
4) if you sit outside bc of #2, be wary of some very vicious yellowjackets that love to eat your bbq
5) They run out of food. Sometimes you get the side dishes you are supposed to get ( see below ), other times you get screwed.

Ok, now for the good part:
If you like BBQ beef brisket, there is simply NONE BETTER than this place. Yes, ive been to Armadillo Willys, Emil Villas, Hickry Pit, etc.... but nothing compares...

The bbq beef brisket isn't too salty or too dry and flakey. Big chunky flavorful pieces of meat with delicious sweet tasting bbq sauce. Now, it's all in the sauce... I like sweet, many of you may not, but it love it.

Next: great salad ( mixed greens with some sort of balsamic vinaigrette  ), the best ever Acme bread, amazing one of a kind potato salad ( and I don't even like eating potato salad!), and corn on the cob.  All for (if you get the "lunch" portion) $9 or so.

More like a 3.5.

Ribs were smoked real well, I don't think I have had ribs smoked this well in a while, there has been better rubs and better sauces at other places but the ribs here have these best "fundamentals" (I guess that's the right term) of a barbecue smoked rib in a long time.

However, the rest of the stuff wasn't really much to rave about.  The sauce tastes weird; there's a tangyness I just can't place but I don't like it.  It's not tangyness that seems appropriate for barbecue sauce.  It's more like the normal tangyness in sweet and sour sauce.  Weirdness aside, the sauce does complement the meat.  But the brisket was dry and a bit bland (just tasted like barely smoked beef).  Likewise the potato salad just didn't taste right as well.  Nothing was bad, but nothing besides the ribs were really good either.

The mixed green salad had a nice vinaigrette, but who goes to a barbecue place for a mixed green salad?

I don't know why this place is on the Chronicle 100.  So many other barbecue places out there in the Bay Area.

I thought the brisket here was very good although a little dry -- I probably just didn't get the freshest batch. The ribs were decent enough and they have a great selection of Belgian beers. Specifically, I had the Bieken which is a blonde ale brewed with honey and is a great compliment to a BBQ dinner.

I do take issue with a couple things about this place. First, the BBQ was not very fresh and the brisket was dry. The sides were pretty unappetizing. The sauce was a joke. I got the "extra hot" sauce and I could barely taste any spiciness. Bo's definitely has potential but it's too flawed for me to recommend.

I like to pretend I'm a rich lafayetten and eat at bo's.  its pretty good barbeque, the meat falls right off the bones, the salad is pretty good and the bread is yummy.  they also have good drinks there.  i used to always get the coke in a bottle, but all i saw was cans of coke last time I was there.

I also love when there is live  music while i'm eating.

If you have never had authentic, traditional BBQ, you'll probably like this place.  The food is fine, but it's not Southern BBQ at all.  No smothering of tasty sauce, no smoky flavor, no wheat bread and even the sides are like some kind of imitation of traditional Southern cooking.

I went here with two friends based on a recommendation and when we got our food, all three of us were really disappointed.  It's not that it was bad or inedible, but it just was not at all what we had been looking forward to.  My foodie friend just kept shaking his head at his plate and saying, "no, no, no."

It reminds me of what you would get if you ordered a plate of BBQ chicken or ribs from any nice neighborhood restaurant - not objectionable but lacking in all those deep smoky flavors and delicious sides that come with real BBQ.

If you're in the East Bay and looking for some real BBQ, hit up Everett and Jones in Berkeley.

I don't normally give unhappy reviews, but my most recent experience here was pretty unfortunate.

I was there to get takeout because I'd had a long day and didn't want to sit with the large crowd.  It took 35 minutes for the food to come, and I got home only to find that:

1. not all the sides were in the bag.  They didn't give me salad or sweet potato.  I called to ask what had happened out of curiosity, and they gave me a dry answer of "we don't include the salad in to-go orders unless you ask and I guess they forgot to give you the sweet potato."  Were they serious?!  I didn't pay $40.00 for two dinners to not have half of what they promise!!

2. the meat was extremely fatty.  If they claim to have the best BBQ in the East Bay, they forgot to include some of that amazing meat in my to-go boxes.

Went here for lunch today. I think the prices were not out of line for a BBQ joint. Five of us ate for $70, with one glass of $8.75 wine. The beer and wine prices did seem pretty high, but the items looked really good.

The ribs were great. The chicken was very dry. So dry, in fact, that I think they probably screwed up today cooking it. The potato salad was not so bad, and sweet pickle potato salad is pretty standard. The meals came with green salad (good), a chunk of baguette and half a steamed yam. The bbq sauce was just okay--not spicy at all.

Not taking credit cards is a big minus. I had to stop at the ATM on the way. They do take debit cards, though.

All in all, I don't think I'll be back--there's better Q closer to home, though it would be fun to sit on the big deck here and drink Belgian ale.

Bo knows, Bo know's his Q.

Now my review is for the most and only important feature of a Barbecue (referred to as "Q" from this point forward). The damn Q. Nothing else matters, nothing else is important. And don't forget that. I already took off a star for the sides.

This Q is flavorful and succulent without completely falling off the bone. They dry rub, smoke and the slather on the sauce and smoke a little longer. You don't just get flavor on the top. You get flavor to savor, all the way to the bone. And you have to nibble just a bit, you know work it. But you aren't fighting it, and that boys and girls is the difference between Q and great Q.

Now remember, this is Texas style Q, so don't have expectations of a Memphis Q or a Carolina style with the vinegar sauce, or Alabama white sauce or even Saint Lunatic style (go Nellie, you are fine).

Now a word to the wise, this place is absolutely packed silly on the weekends and at night. So if you want to sit down and savor, come early. And it ain't cheap, but you get what you pay for. You want all you can eat for $11, take your happy self to Applebee's for all you can eat riblits. This ain't fast food Q, this ain't cheap Q, this is the good stuff.

Now if you eat like a bird, (not an ostrich), then you'll be comfortable sharing a plate and getting extra sides (which are just mediocre). Personally, I have a hard and fast rule about my Q, I don't share. So take a step back before I stab you.....

The BBQ here is pretty good. They smoke it right. Ribs and brisket are always moist. If you're in the area and in the mood for BBQ, this is definitely one of the better places in the Bay.

OK, I know Bo's may not be the cat's meow for everybody, but it is for me.  I've eaten lots of BBQ, but nowhere comes close to the quality of Bo's.

I have been frequenting Bo's since just after it opened - 8 years?

The beef brisket is killer - super moist, tender with a great oakey flavor.

Free, liive music at Bo's is a big bonus and the outdoor seating area (especially when warmer) is decadent.

Bo himself is a great guy - although he isn't around as much anymore.

There is an incredible selection of chilled beer (oh yeah!) and many wines by the glass/bottle.

The selection of sides (none), throws some people off.  You get a yam, organic frisee salad, potato salad and a slice of ACME bread.

All beef/pork is from Niman Ranch - brisket, pork/beef ribs and links.

Chicken is out of this world and is free range from Fulton Farms.

Too sum it up, this ain't no chain BBQ - limited selection, high quality food, very nice setting and friendly staff add up to my kind of BBQ experience

I'm so glad I found this place! It is as close to the best barbeque to home cooked as I can get! All the meats are yum! The ribs are very moist and so are the briskets. I'm not crazy about chicken but it was actually good. Not great but good. Get there before 8:30pm on a Thursday because it seems there are more people there when there's free jazz live band.  They tend to run out of things by then.
If there are seats, grab it & get someone else to go get the orders. It's free seating.
You line up at the register & place your order then you get a number. They will bring it to you. Have your order ready though, if you went there for the first time, you'll hear a sigh of discontent from the local regulars. It's a rich nieghborhood so you get a few snooties in the line.
What an awesome selection of beer & wine! I can't believe I paid $10 for one beer though. I had to try it. Mmmm, Belgian beer.

Delicious, high-quality, very "gourmet" feeling all around. You can get a lot of "date night" bang for your buck, too---when they have live music (it's great), you and your sweetie can bob your head to the beat, while wolfing down your delicious meal.

An admirable selection of beers, ales, wines, & even sodas!

And a random note: Bo himself is friendly and a bit of a flirt, I think. I once saw him up the street at Noah's Bagels, we passed each other and he made sure to say, "hellloooo there!" hahah

At its best, Bo's BBQ is the best in the Bay Area hands down.  I've been coming here for a good 6+ years, before they expanded to their current size.  They have improved the consistency of the ribs but some of the other stuff is still hit or miss.

Pros:

Ribs: their long-end ribs are consistently the absolute BEST thing on the menu and has been (for me at least) very consistently drop off the bone tender.  I usually go with the ribs dinner

Brisket: When the brisket is good, it kicks the ribs' ass.  But you're really playing Russian roulette when you order the brisket because 5 out of 10 times it's going to be really dry and pretty disgusting, but 2 out of those 10 times you will have some REALLY kick-ass brisket that makes your mouth water

Sauce: This is a personal preference, but I love their sauce.  You can always ask for extra sauce at no charge if you'd like.  Bo used to charge $1.50 extra for this, but I think that has changed.

Chicken: This is also quite good, very flavorful and not dry at all.  Give it a try after you try out the ribs.

Sides: I like the yam and potato salad.  The spring mix is nice too.

Cons:

Price of the Beers: I mean seriously, the beer is WAY overpriced.  I'm willing to pay a bit extra for some alcohol, but we're approaching SF club prices for some of the alcohol being served.  Bo's admittedly has one of the best beer selection (esp. if you're into Belgians), but it's pricey.

Brisket:  It's so inconsistent that I no longer order it.

Music: This is not a knock on the musicians that play there, but dude, I'd prefer it if there was no music there.  It gets WAY too loud on the nights when there are bands playing and you end up screaming in each others' ears when trying to have a conversation.

Bottom Line:  This place is the bomb for BBQ, get the ribs (long-end to be safe because it tends to be fatter/juicier and has less of a chance of being overly dry), and give the brisket a try after you try out the ribs.  Oh yeah, also try to get there before 7pm because they do run out of stuff (esp. on the weekends) and it gets SUPER crowded.

Good eats, good music, can be busy. The sauce on the BBQ chicken is just scrumptious and the yams on the side are perfect. The salad and anything else is fresh and yummy. I like sitting on the deck watching the booming metropolis of Lafayette scoot by.

By the way, where is Bo?I like that guy!

I know a lot of people who rave about this place and I am not quite sure why.
I have been here a few times now and have never left happy.  The food is really exspensive and the meat always seems to be dry and in one case the briskit was completely burnt all the way through. They did give me a whole new order but I had to wait 15 min for it.
It is always really busy here and you have to wait exteremly long for your food. I am also not a big fan of the cafatera seating but I understadn they are trying to fit in as many people as possible.
The do have live Jaz music playing most the time but for how small the place is it is really just too loud to have inside. I had a hard time talking to the person next to me do to the crowd and then the exteremly loud music.
The people who work here are friendly and they do have a pretty good beer selection but for the wait the price and the quality of the meat I would not recommend this place to a friend.

First of all, this place has two things that I think very highly of - BBQ and beer.

I've been here three times but I haven't been very impressed with their food.  The sausage and BBQ sauce are tasty.  I'm not a big fan of the sides.  The potato salad is more like potatoe puree and is way too sweet for me.

They do have an excellent beer selection, especially Belgian beers.

It's expensive and you usually have to wait a really long time to place and get your order.  I don't mind waiting a long time on food that I'm really excited about but they don't excite me.

great bbq. would receive more stars but they do not serve cornbread... no cornbread at a bbq spot?!? add cornbread and slather on way more bbq sauce and it would be booomin!

p.s. we reached for two beers and the server said they were $10 each.. so be careful!

I had the unfortunate experience of being made to go here because everyone else at my sales meeting wanted to go here.

When I got there everyone was screaming about how this place has been rated number one by Zagats and that after eating here I wouldn't have to eat dinner that night. Um maybe I want to eat dinner?

The first thing I noticed was the expensive menu. Really expensive. Also I want to know what I'm ordering. What was written on the board behind the cashier wasn't very descriptive. Someone else told me what to order. I didn't think the food was so amazing that I should just jump for joy and forget any other meat I have ever eaten. It was actually like the story of the Emperors New Clothes. I think my fellow colleagues were duped into thinking this place was so wonderful.

I did notice they had a very good selection of beers. If I was able to have a lovely adult beverage while there may be I would have reviewed a little differently. Unfortunately, I was technically working so I could not indulge in my favorite addiction.

The music was nice. There was not live music but they were like playing the sound track to Pulp Fiction. That made it little better.

May be Im not a big barbecue fan.  I wasnt impressed.

We've really been looking forward to eating here -we've heard a lot of good things.  The ambiance was really nice I must say.  Outdoor patio, nice jazz band playing live, and their beer selection is pretty extensive.  I just wasn't that blown away by the food.  Maybe I'm biased- my dad is a big BBQ'er.  I thought it was a little pricey as well.  Really nice staff!
