Seattle, WA
I decided to visit Borracchini's Bakery after hearing about Solidarity Seattle's attempt to put them out of business. I'm sure SS never anticipated this outcome, but I'm now one of the horde of new customers who are going to be regulars because we saw just how cool they are!
I was astonished to see the vast selection of both sweet and savory baked goods in the display cases. I bought some cookies and a traditional Italian treat (forget the name), and they were quite fine.
It is a bit of a misnomer to call this place a 'bakery'. Yes, they sell a fantastic variety of baked goods, but they also have a market full of Italian groceries and cooking ingredients that rivals DeLaurenti's in the Pike Place Market, so next time you are planning to have an Italian dinner party, you can go here for real 'one stop shopping' for those hard-to-find ingredients.
The also have a deli that offers a delightful selection of artisan cold cuts and salads, as well as sandwiches, 'to-go' lasagna, and even chicken pot pies (I had one; they're great! Note to the folks at Eat Local: get down here and take a lesson in how a chicken pot pie is SUPPOSED to be made!). The have a few tables so you can enjoy a quick bite on premises as well, and sell ice cream and espresso drinks.
Service is quite good too. The staff is quick, efficient and pleasant. Given how busy they were on a Wednesday midmorning, they work their butts off, too!
Borracchini's Bakery is a Seattle institution, a throwback to the days when the Rainier Valley was known as 'Garlic Gulch', or Seattle's Little Italy. They're just down the street from another longtime Seattle Italian business, Oberto's.
Anyway, thank you Seattle Solidarity for bringing this place to my attention. This may not have been the outcome you sought, giving BB so much free exposure, but what the heck; I'll definitely be back!!! -

With all the hype lately surrounding Borracchini's, I decided to stop back in. I have been a customer in the past and their cakes are very good, so I figured we would give some of their cookies a try.
While the products they carry are good and their selection is extensive, their customer service was very disappointing. The woman who rang me out was rude and unfriendly, to the point that even my 10 year old made mention of her attitude upon leaving. That tells you something. I will not be returning. -

I have been coming to this bakery since I was 5 years old! My grandmother started the tradition of bringing my mother when she was small to come to this bakery to watch cakes being made! She passed on the tradition to me, and I to hope to pass this tradition down as well. Borracchini's has been part of my family for as long as I can remember.
So you can imagine my OUTRAGE/DISGUST when I heard about the turmoil going on cause by Gladys, or "trash" as I call her. What a horrible human being to start something like this. Last Saturday me and my husband jumped in our car and rushed down to support Remo and his wonderful bakery & family. We walked in and bought TONS of yummy baked goods! (Remo's donuts are crack)!!! We decided to watch "the show" of stupid supporters of Seattle Solidarity and got some great laughs! At 1:15pm the police escorted the group off the grounds and as they were leaving all of us supporters sang a chorus of "Na Na Na Na, Na Na Na Na Na, hey hey hey, GOOD BYE, as we waived!!!! It was awesome! A few chanted back at us "We'll be back", to which we all replied, "SO WILL WE" And we will........
Remo Borracchini is part of our family, and we stand by our family!!!! He was 100% correct in doing what he did, and I would have done the exact same thing. Borracchini's isn't' going anywhere, so protesters, you might as well give up! -

We decided to get a cake here for our baby's 1st birthday party. My wife ordered the cake 3 days ahead with decorating requests. The morning of the party we were scheduled to pick it up at 1030. At 945 my wife called to confirm it would be ready. She was told "if it's supposed to be ready at 1030 it will be ready at 1030." I show at 1015 and quickly realize they haven't even started decorating it. Waited 45 minutes to get a cake that wasn't decorated as specified. The guy at the counter said "yeah, sometimes we get busy."
End result: delicious cake and great b-day party. But I will never order a cake from these folks again. Everything in their bakery/deli/freezer cases looked delicious but with all the choices in Seattle (we live near bakery nouveau) I don't see much point in supporting a business with such crummy customer relations. -

Holy Fabulosity, Batman!
I must give thanks to the embarrassingly ungrateful ex-worker, Gladys (for shame!), who brought down the "wrath" (tee hee) of Seattle Solidarity. Otherwise, Borracchini's Bakery would never have made it onto my radar.
We first started hearing of the issue on the local news stations on Thursday. Hearing of a disgruntled ex-employee carrying a grudge and an unfounded sense of entitlement spurred us into action. Most curious, we grabbed a friend and headed down to check out Borracchini's ourselves.
Because of the local news hubbub, of course the lot was packed when we arrived. We waited for some nice folks to vacate a street space behind the bakery and we headed in. Imagine my wonder when I realized that this spot is not only a bakery but a full deli and grocery haven for one-of-a-kind Italian food items! About five steps in, I realized I'd need a basket because there was just too much good stuff that I needed to take home with me. There were samples aplenty, and the white cake with chocolate whipped cream frosting sample that I tried was divine. And when I hit the frozen case, well, you could have knocked me over with a cannoli...they stocked Spumoni!!! Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy. My friend, taking pity on me in my drooling state, purchased one for me. For this, I am eternally in his debt. Spumoni, woo hoo! Divine.
Perusing the rest of the place, we ended up with several goodies that made it into dinner tonight (pecan-crusted salmon with potato gnocchi in a lemon-chive cream sauce) and will also make it into dinner tomorrow (chicken with bucatini in a gorgonzola cream sauce). And did I mention the Spumoni??? Also came across a couple of fun cooking items, like the purple barley and the Meyer lemon syrup (the syrup is going into a drink concoction involving, among other things, marshmallow vodka). And the olive choices, wow. I guess I just need to come back often.
We paid for our items and practically skipped back to the car. Once we were headed home, we did a mental calculation and realized that with about 900 folks stopping by Borracchini's yesterday, at an average of a $10 purchase per person the bakery is doing quite well with all this "negative" publicity. Later this evening, the news mentioned that 1500 folks had been to visit the bakery today.
Employees throughout the store seemed to genuinely enjoy what they do and were smiling and helpful. Remo and company, keep up the phenomenal work and we'll see you in the next hundred years because you are not allowed to go anywhere! -

I have been 22 year enthusiast of the cakes made and to this day will swear that they are the best tasting cakes ever but their lack of Customer Service has now made it where I will not return anymore.
REMO, If you read this, It is not just about selling a great product, it is about those who reflect your business and make a business marketable and profitable. As a long time customer it saddens me to see just how this once friendly bakery has turned into the company who thinks customer satisfaction is a thing of the past. -

We went back today especially to show our support for this bakery because of the problems they were having due to a disgruntled ex-employee.
Apparently, this past week, Borracchini's Bakery was being bullied (my term) by a fired ex-employee who got an organization to send lots of people to the store in an attempt to extort a different settlement / money and attempt to shut them down by making it impossible for them to conduct business. I don't know all the facts of the case, just what I've read in online news reports, but I do know that I take great exception to bullying tactics that seemed to have been used by this ex-employee and this organization. Good job, Dorie Monson and others for uncovering the facts and keeping us current.
The bakery seemed to be having a good day and going into a good evening. We saw some TV reporter setup and hoped we weren't on TV. ;)
The workers there were very pleasant and we enjoyed our visit. As always, they were polite, courteous and delighted to help out. Very professional but nicely personable. If this ex-employee didn't live up to their expectations, perhaps she should consider that MAYBE just MAYBE she has something valuable to learn about customer-facing behavior. If you have a problem with your company, handle it when it happens, not AFTER you end up getting fired for being rude to customers.
This is a truly awesome bakery - they have excellent products and an excellent staff that we've enjoyed interacting with every single time we've been there.
We ended up enjoying many of their samples freely displayed. Delicious! Cookies, cakes, panettone. etc. were available as samples. This is typical for them - every time we've gone in, there are so many samples available to try and boy do we try them. You can taste the "real" ingredients and old-time recipes.
We'd already eaten elsewhere and picked up some bakery goods to take home. Too bad they were out of brownies and old-fashioned donuts. Sold out at 6pm. :) But oh my goodness, their macaroons are delightful and available! If you love macaroons, these are simply the best! Omigosh!
We love their baked goods, and deli. Every time we go back, they go up a notch in our assessment. We had mentioned their sparse eat-in area and downgraded them before. But we usually pop in and take-out and I'd rather have more space devoted to their bakery, so they've been rising in our assessment every since our 1st visit. 4.5 - 4.6 - 4.7 - 4.8 - 4.9 - 5. 0 stars!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Catered my Wedding In March this Year, great cake, excellent price. Got meat and cheese platters too. I didn't get a chance to eat much, but heard it was just fine!
Delivered in Monroe, this turned out to be doable but at first, someone in the store told my Fiance and her mom that it was not in range! The only only reason I'm giving 4/5 is because the it took me calling in a second time to find the right manager to give me the delivery quote for Monroe.
Hurray! Oh yeah, we also bought coffee and pasta sauce on a separate occasion, both very tasty. -

There is a lot of talk on here about how great Borracchini's cakes are, and how disgusting it is for an ex-employee to allege that she was treated unfairly while working there. Exactly why this place being in business since the 1920's is a good excuse for poor working conditions and sub-par sanitation standards is beyond me and frankly, I am very disappointed in this bakery.
I live in the neighborhood and stopped to see what all the ruckus was about a few weeks ago, and the reason why the police "escorted" some of the protesters off of the premises was because a grown man assaulted a young woman with no provocation- the man was a Borracchini's supporter and the woman was engaged in a peaceful demonstration. Whether that man felt that she was right or wrong, I could not believe that people like cake so much that they would try to hurt another human being. That's when I became disappointed in my community- what a fine example of people caring more about preserving norms (even bad ones) than the well-being of other humans.
My family has been getting cakes from Borracchini's for my whole life (and well before that; my 70-year-old grandmother used to love them!). After visiting http://nobreaksnocakes..., where other ex-employees and a former manager corroborate the woman's story and Solidarity Seattle further explains the reasoning behind their actions, none of my family will ever be returning to Borracchini's. We can get physically and morally cleaner pastries at other local family-owned businesses. Check out what their former manager has to say about rats and cakes being decorated after being dropped on the floor. Yuck! -

I moved to Mt. Baker/Judkins area about a year ago and just discovered this place after a coworker told me they had the "best cakes in town". Cakes aren't my favorite desserts so I've only tried their (giant) samples. They are certainly better than Safeway and affordable. The sample cookies I tried had that delectable balance of crunchy on the outside, almost gooey on the inside.
I got the stuffed cabbage and the eggplant parmesan to bring home for dinner. I didn't realize that they weren't fully cooked (which makes sense) so I tried the very chewy eggplant before realizing that I needed to put it in the oven first. Once I did that the food was great.
They have a fair amount of friendly staff ready to help. I'm looking forward to frequenting this place more in the future (it helps that they are only 3 blocks from my house). I can't wait to try the cannoli, which looks amazing and the most authentic I've seen in Seattle as well as their gelato and italian sodas. So glad to have discovered this place. -

Don't believe the recent negative reviews. They are political due to a labor dispute with a disgruntled employee. Trust ME, who has been going there for 40 years to say that it is a great bakery! My family has been going there since 1940 when they moved here from Minneapolis. We've had countless wedding cakes and birthday cakes from them over the years and every single one has been perfection!

I've been partaking of products made at Borracchini's Bakery since the mid 1960's and I keep coming back for more. Every big event, including my daughter's wedding, involved a cake or other heavenly treats from Borracchini's.
I've read the recent reviews about this place. Most are very positive. A couple of the reviewers complained about the frosting being "too sugary" (from someone who is part of a group of felons trying to extort money from the bakery) or tasting like "plastic".
I submit to you that those two reviewers where actually thinking about a QFC or Albertson's or some other big store cake with all that gritty sugar from a can because anyone can tell you that Borracchini's Bakery has a velvety smooth, creamy frosting that leaves nothing but good tastes in your mouth and the desire to have more!
I cannot get enough of their cakes! At times, I will stop in and buy a single slice of cake (sshhh! Don't tell my family!) because I just have to have a piece but don't have an occasion to need an entire cake.
My experience, and those of other people, will not be the same as your experience for no one can truly describe heaven to someone who has never tasted the next best thing.
Please try Borracchini's Bakery for yourself (I recommend their cake, pasta & sauces, and ice creams).
I have never had a problem with staff or service. It is a delicious bakery with a lot of loyal customers.
If you happen to be there on a busy day, please be patient. You are not the only person who needs a fix of deliciousness! -

Having family errands in Seattle I decided to stop off at this historic bakery to show support. I arrived at 6pm and the bakery was packed. I purchased a half-dozen cupcakes, dozen sugar cookies and some prosciutto. The cupcakes and cookies were outstanding, including the frosting on the cupcakes. The prosciutto hasn't been tried yet but sure it is up the high levels that this bakery prides itself. I will definitely return to this friendly and tasty bakery.

I dont care for cakes but they do fairly well for me to enjoy them! It doesn't matter who I get cakes from, the frosting comes off.. But the cake is good alone. Its very moist, lightly sweeten and perfect amount of filling.
I also sometimes buy a dozen of donuts at the early bird price and I think its a deal! 12 for 5 something. They are always pleasant, always have my cake ready for pick up early in the morning. I believe their pricing of cake is reasonable. Options are definitely there. Mmm yum
Did I mention they open EARLY in the morning so I can make my morning trips before my 7am shift? I really appreciate that because sometimes you want a light cake and not get it at a place like qfc. -

Anytime I need a sheet cake or anything from a bakery, usually for work parties, Borrachhini's is the ONLY place I go to. Service is great and always on time and I couldn't be happier with the cake!!!!
I know they currently are dealing with a disgruntled ex-employee (who I've dealt with before and always thought she was rude and acted like you were bothering her) attacking them online via the Seattle Solidarity Network and a result of this disgusting use of social media, I will always ensure that any job I'm working at orders from this establishment! THEY ARE GREAT!!!! -

BEST place ever for CHEAP, GREAT quality food. Aah, so darn good. I always come here for birthday cakes, or if I want a sweet fix. Seriously.
Yesterday, I bought a 1 layer raspberry cake and it was freaking $5. I could feed like 8 people or more w/ this cake!!! I love it.
I have never had a bad cake from this place. They sometimes offer samples of their breads or cakes so you can try. Which I love because I want to try things before I buy it.
They have FRESH delicious food in the back deli, ranging from soups, italian food, sandwiches, and then there's donuts, cookies, baked goods & cakes! Mmmm.
Their italian sodas are cheap too and very delicious! :)
I have been going here for YEARS! So close to my house, and seriously the bomb!!! :) -

I've been a patron of Borracchini's Bakery for years, and I can't rave enough about this place! I've never left disappointed with any choice, whether it's from the bakery or their deli (which is also awesome!). This is a classic bakery, producing cakes, cookies and other goodies (like fresh cannolis, yum!) and their products are far superior to what you'll pick up in standards bakeries at Safeway, Albertson's and other grocery stores. And beyond the goods, the people are wonderful - Remo is sweet and helpful, and his staff follow his lead. This is the kind of place I go out of my way for (sometimes to my waistline's detriment).

I think their cakes are pretty good, but what I have really enjoyed over the years are the rest of the baked goods. I find the cheese rolls to be awesome, even a few days after purchase, I microwave them for 12 seconds a roll & they are great. As ever, the dinner rolls are big & fluffy, just waiting for a bit of butter, or maybe as a post meal sandwhich? (Yum!) The Easter cookies this year were really good too. My nieces & nephew all enjoyed the mini egg cakes we got for them (egg shaped cake with a dark chocolate coating). The garlic chips (garlic crostini), well, lets just say I don't have to worry about how long they will last after the box has been opened. The wife has enjoyed the doughnuts & cinnamon rolls too.
As to the recent controversy, I have known different members of the Borracchini business over the past three decades, none of whom have complained about the workplace or management
How many bussinesses can boast nearly 90 years in business under the same family & where you just might be greeted with a hearty hello & handshake by the boss?
I say shame on Seasol for not bothering to get the story from both sides before they picketed. Someone needs to ask "Gladys" how many free baked goods she took home over the years (with permission of course). -

I have been eating the cakes from Borrachini's Bakery for as long as I can remember. My family's special occasions always included a signature sheet cake. My brother really enjoys the rum filling, while I prefer the rasberry.
Recently, I've taken some time to explore the whole bakery and found many of the other items to be great. They've got prepared meals like cabbage rolls, pizza boats and a variety of other take and bake meals.
But, I get drawn back to the baked goods section, loading up on great and original Christmas cookies, turnovers, bread sticks and many other great snacks.
It's kind of a dangerous place to visit at the end of the day, you can easily convince yourself to buy a dozen doughnuts for $2.99, as they're liquidating the day's bounty to make room for tomorow.
The services is great, you never have to wait for more than a few minutes before someone is helping you gather up your order or check you out. -

I was introduced to Borracchini's Bakery by my sister. We've had cakes from Borracchini's for various family events and other bakery treats, deli and grocery items for no reason other than the food it top notch. My only disappointment is that I did not know about Borracchini's when I lived in Seattle. It is always on the list of places I like to visit when I get to Seattle.

I'm not a huge fan of any cakes other than the ones that come from a Chinese bakery because it's usually too sweet for me, but this place makes it oh-so-yummy! It's not too sweet and the cake is moist.
They also have a large selection of cupcakes, cookies, pastries and breads. My current favorite is the lace cookies. OMG. To die for!!! Everything is cheap, too!
Did I mention the freshly made pasta salad in their deli? SO GOOD! I *forget* to bring lunch sometimes just so I can come here. You can also buy their sandwiches and ask them to put it in the panini grill for you. It's great with the soups they have, too. They have a different selection each day, but I think my favorite is the minestrone.
Love this place! Def check it out if you're in the area...if not, come anyway. It's worth it! -

If you need a sheet cake, donuts or pastries for a party this is your place. These folks have survived in the Rainier Valley for a reason. They CAN bake. Maybe not the super fanciest, super lightest or most adventurous, but this IS the go to place when you need an very good box of pastries. I think their donuts are WAY above average.
How many sheet cakes have I had from there? I've lost count.
The also a reasonable selection of Italian foods for your own cooking adventures. -

A great place that's more than just a bakery! They have excellent Mediterranean cuisine such as pasta salads and just about any and every type of pasta sauce you can think of!
The food that we've gotten (which has ranged from baked goods to the aforementioned pasta salads) has been savory and authentic (i.e. not "Americanized" with too much grease/oil).
Finally, if you're a fan of Italian Sodas (and even if you're not) I highly recommend you try one here, they are delicious! -

We love, love, love Borracchini's Bakery! My family has been a customer for 25 years and counting. All of our special occasion cakes come from here and I'm so proud to be able to carry on that tradition with my kids.
They did a wonderful job on my son's 'Finding Nemo' cake for his first birthday, and our wedding cake was stylish and tasty! My mom, the affectionately nicknamed "food snob", even had two pieces! She won't eat cake from anywhere else because their frosting is the best.
For Christmas, we purchased goodies from their bakery case, and filled gift baskets with meats, cheeses, ravioli and sauces. We received so many compliments, so I pass them on to you Mr. and Mrs. B! Their meatball sandwiches are yummy, too. My son's eyes are the size of saucers when he sees the variety of cookies and donuts in the bakery case. One of the kind ladies behind the counter gave him a free sampling, too! I love this place and hope to see them around for many, many years to come! -

My boyfriend and I have been going here for about 5 months for almost every weekend. Every weekend I've gone in, I've had nothing but great service and smiles. They have great prices and the service can not be matched.

30 years ago, I went to this place for my wedding cake. It was recommended to us. Its a small, old family owned, neighborhood place. Been there for forever. (1922) It was the best cake I ever had. We were so happy with it. Looks and taste. Well we moved north and had a family and just didnt get to that part of Seattle much. But maybe 10 years ago, we went there again. It was the same! Still as wonderful as always. I was talking to a friend about good cakes and frosting a few weeks ago. And she tells me about this place in Seattle.....It was Borracchinis! So yesterday, we took a drive and went there. Bought cakes, pies, cookies, croissants and bread. Oh and marinara sauce. Same friendly people. Same fantastic food! I recommended Borracchinis to a girl who works at Starbucks and is getting married soon. She went there, loved it, and they are doing their wedding cake! I heard about some employee picketing a few weeks ago, but I have to say this place is still awesome. You can't be in business tat long and not be awesome. Go there. You will love it. I'm not kidding!

I've been here many many times over the years. I even had my wedding cake done by them 7 years ago. Maybe the cake has changed since then but it was great when I ordered it and 1/2 the price as other bakeries I looked at. The only issue is that the messed the color of the piping up. I had a small meltdown as most brides do at some point, but it all worked out just fine.
My most recent trip was today and a little earlier in the morning. I stopped in and got some doughnuts and cookies. The cookies have been great so far and are not the typical kinds you would expect. They are pretty crispy but to me, that's just fine. I have eaten one of the doughnuts and I am less than impressed with it. It had a very odd after taste. I am not sure what that is about.
All in all, I would go back. Everything else I have had has been great. -

I would like to amend my earlier review and say that the management at Borracchini's has offered an apology for the mistake with the gender cake. I knew there was a good reason I picked this bakery and they have done everything they can to fix the error. I really appreciate the manager personally taking the time to talk to me about what happened. They do put their customers first and want everyone to be happy. I will patronize this bakery in the future.

Never been inside the facility but have ordered cakes delivered for office parties.
Everyone is very nice, the orders were always accurate and mostly on time. However I just can't stand the taste. The cakes are so boring, Safeway quality easily. The filings are usually pretty good, but the frosting is disgusting. It tastes like plastic to me and they use way too much of it. -

My family has been shopping at Borracchini's for years. I love when I come in on Friday mornings with my son - and they already know my order - "one challah, not sliced." They have wonderful baked goods, fun new treats they keep coming up with (oh my goodness the peanut butter/ chocolate croissants are excellent), and great frozen pastas, raviolis, etc. The staff are friendly and the owners do a great job supporting the community. I love supporting this locally owned business.
