This was my first time buying a home in San Francisco. I am a native to the area but had no idea how complex the law was with respect to purchasing a tenant occupied unit. While several prospective buyers passed on the property because it was tenant occupied, I took a chance and enlisted the services of Daniel Bornstein to assist me.
He patiently walked me through every step of the OMI process and also suggested a different avenue which, inevitably resulted in a favorable outcome. He is a veteran who knows SF real estate law cold.
Daniel is responsive, extremely knowledgeable and results oriented. In addition, he very transparent in terms of fees. To anyone out there considering a real estate transaction with complexities, you will be in no better hands than with Daniel Bornstein. -

In my case, he also escalated a situation that could have been resolved amicably. He is quite aggressive and even belligerent. If this is not the kind of representation you want, then stay away.

He get's the job done!
Face the facts: You live in a city that clearly favors renters - Rent Board regulation is just plain ridiculous. SF has made things that should be simple and straightforward, extremely difficult and costly, often times at the expense of the landlord.
With the amount of craziness that is involved in Rent Board regulation you NEED someone that understands the code, and can get the job done. (Trust me, we had tried to get things done on our own, and it backfired in our face.)
You need someone confident, and sure of himself. Daniel Bornstein is that guy. He's no nonsense, and blunt. But that's what you need when dealing with regulation filled with fluff and gray area. He's not there to talk to you for hours, and charge you for it. He's just there to get the job done. Don't waste his time, cause he' won't waste yours. -

I'm a new homeowner who worked with Daniel Bornstein on an OMI eviction. Trust me, this is one of the least fun processes in the world, and trying to do this fairly and honestly while abiding by the SF Rent Board Ordinance is incredibly tough. I knew I couldn't handle this on my own.
Daniel Bornstein helped me draft and deliver the appropriate documents to my tenant, and everything worked out with zero complications. He's incredibly knowledgeable of the San Francisco property laws. As a landlord who is just trying to be honest in a town that favors renters, I found him to be a fantastic advocate. Lawyers are pricey in general, but Daniel's services were worth it, and his costs were reasonable. Don't be put off if he sounds terse - he's really just trying to help keep conversations concise to speed things up.
If you're a landlord and need a lawyer, I would make a trip to Daniel Bornstein's offices, stat. -

Daniel did a great job for me in evicting a troublesome tenant. He talked me out of my natural passivity and lead me through a procees that he handeld extremely efficiently and cost-effectively. He was aggressive but wise enough to not blow up the process with unneccessary ego and confrontation.
He provided sage advice and is a great resource. -

I work as a professional property owner operator and have found that Daniel Bornstein is one of the few lawyers who will actually call me back and spent a few minutes with me without charging me for every phone call and every question. He truly cares about helping people and is extremely knowledgeable about Oakland rent control. I would highly recommend using him for any tenant issues as he fair and fast.

I have been using Bornstein & Bornstein for over 7 years now, and am always overly satisfied with how good of a job they do! Owning and managing property in San Francisco can be a very 'interesting' experience, with all of the situations, laws, ordinances, special codes etc...it is hard to stay up to date with everything and Daniel does a great job of not only handling the situation but educating on why!
I continue to work with Daniel and his office because of there excellent service and no-nonsense attitude of being able to get things done quickly and efficiently. -

My wife and I first engaged Daniel Bornstein when we were property owners and needed advice on tenant law here in San Francisco. Daniel and his colleagues were professional, thorough and creative in helping us to navigate the current code and reach an amicable resolution with our tenants. Our outcome would not have been nearly as positive or forthcoming without Daniel's help.
Recently, we found ourselves on the other side of the owner-tenant divide. This time, Daniel again provided informative, experience and nuanced council that has helped us address our current issues and reach an amicable and positive solution.
We cannot recommend more strongly Bornstein and Bornstein. Daniel and his colleagues are not only capable and experienced attorneys, they also know the law. Importantly, they also most likely know the attorney that you'll be facing, as well as the Judge that may hear your case. I have retained Daniel Bornstein four times over the past 3 years to represent a building I manage. Though each case was unique, one being a commercial eviction, the other three various types of residential cases, the outcome was the same in each: a judgment in my favor. The real estate laws in this city are byzantine and stacked heavily against landlords; Daniel always explains all the potential outcomes (which I've learned are numerous and often counter-intuitive) and helps me reach the best possible one as quickly as possible. He has extensive knowledge of San Francisco tenant law, and explains all the angles to you concisely and responsively by email and phone. In front of opposing counsel, he is direct and to the point--an assertive but pragmatic negotiator who will ensure you get the best judgment possible. As far as I'm concerned, there's no better hedge against bad tenants than Daniel Bornstein.
